Sony's marketing focuses on Specs because that is where they are on top. I think this generates a very negative attitude toward other photographers as a byproduct. Other products are "inferior"4 points

Ursa Mini 4.6K dynamic range (Cinema 5D)
KnightsFan and 2 others reacted to HockeyFan12 for a topic
In my experience, Red is very generous with its ratings. The MX was rated very high, but I remember in practice it had about one stop less DR than the C300 (which is a more recent sensor design, so it makes sense) when I used it, which in turn had two to three stops less DR than the Alexa. Then the Dragon was noisier in the shadows than the MX but had more highlight detail, still trailing the Alexa by a lot. That was the original OLPF, I think they switched it up. For the time it was pretty good, but today's mirrorless cameras have more DR than the MX ever did. Dragon looks great exposed to the left, though. Good tonality. Recently, Red's gotten a lot better. My friends who've used the Gemini think it's just great. Super clean, good resolution, great DR, too. I've found CML does really good tests that correlate closely with real world use: https://cinematography.net/CineRant/2018/07/30/personal-comments-on-the-2018-cml-camera-evaluations/ They give the Gemini half a stop less than the Alexa–not bad. They also post Vimeo links, where you can see skin tones, etc. Venice looks awesome. Not sure about the Alexa and Amira being any different. Same sensor design and both to me seem leagues beyond anything else I've used. Not just best DR but best tonality and texture and color in the highlights. I remember that the original Alexa had worse performance than the Alexa Mini (pretty subtle, but it was there) and Arri confirmed that they did little tweaks that push the newer models to 15+ stops. But that should favor the Amira, if anything. In my experience the Amira is just as good as the Mini, though, 15+ stops. I think Cinema5D changed their testing methodology so their results are inconsistent, and they've always seemed pretty careless to me.3 points -
Premiere Pro - The Shittiest Software Going

Try exporting to xml and then importing to resolve, nothing to lose! I switched over recently and I haven't noticed the actual performance being better than premiere in terms of stutters during 4k playback but at least I don't get the glitch where I can't save and premiere hangs for 30mins with the file explorer dialogue is open... Obviously there's some bugs but I'm trying to escape the Adobe universe.2 points -
Olympus EM1-X Rumor
frontfocus and one other reacted to Video Hummus for a topic
I agree. M4/3 can't compete in the megapixel race but it is well positioned with its tiny sensor to move in this direction. A combination of IBIS and electronic stabilization with feedback from an accelerometer and gyro (like the gopro 7) and you could have gimbal levels of performance. I can't see M4/3 surviving in the high end market any other way. I'd love the GH6 to have a 20MP sensor, 4K120p, gimbal levels of stabilization, Fuji/Pany organic sensor with ISO performance as good or better than GH5s, and internal ND (via the organic sensor), and articulating screen. Slap on the new 10-25mm f1.7 and you have perhaps the perfect run and gun shooting, b-cam, street journalistic style video-adventure -camera ever? I would pay good money (3K+) for this as well. If Pany or Oly could make a M4/3 mirrorless camera that I could take out of my backpack and run around and take 4K 60/120p stabilized video without a gimbal that looks like it was shot on a gimbal, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.2 points -

I feel your pain. Between Premiere unstability and Flash vulnerabilities, I have a strong distrust of Adobe myself. I use Resolve for editing these days. My biggest project is ~5,000 files / 500 GB and Resolve is handling it just fine. Each of the files actually is imported both in full res and a proxy, so there's closer to 10,000 imported files. Not sure how that scales against your needs...2 points -

Why Is Sony Fanboyism So Bad?

Any Fanboyism in general is stupid. Not sure Sony fanboys are worse than Canon or Fuji one. They should just use their brain and pick the best tool for the job.1 point -
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Kisaha reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Go for it. That way you don't have to worry about what cage you have, or not having to use some really light lens. Other than well size and weight it is a no brainier I think for the money they cost now. Might as well have the best for really the same money or close to it than less featured products. And you can use it for a full sized DSLR if you want to, or even a C100 stripped down. None of them are stealth, or weigh next to nothing..1 point -
Variable ND filters for video?
thephoenix reacted to AlexTrinder96 for a topic
There's two separate nd filters btw. One is 1-7 stops, the other is 5-11! I have seen quite a few reviews (all positive) but the vast majority have obviously been sent for review.1 point -

THE VICTORY OF CONCRETE would be the correct English way. But I guess you are referring to the Buildings and Roads being constructed of concrete? Concrete also can refer to a rock solid idea or effort etc..1 point -
Are there ANY Sony sensors that Do Not Do ATLEAST 10-bit at full res??? The GH5 autofocus has improved substantially in video from how it was, when it was released. Though it's still nowhere near PDAF territory.1 point

GH5 - major lag via HDMI out to ext. recorders?
Martin Matěj reacted to mirekti for a topic
I am in a marked for SmallHD focus. Currently I use Atomos Ninja, but I really need something smaller. Also, I’ve read some posts about the issue with the delay which put me off, but now i am reassured it should be ok. One last thing that concerns me is that it doesn’t support 4k60p. Will I be able to record 4k60p internally and display it on SmallHD Focus at the same time or the HDMI out will be the same as what I record internally to the SD card, 4k60p, and I wouldn’t be able to monitor in such mode?1 point -
Why Is Sony Fanboyism So Bad?
TurboRat reacted to frontfocus for a topic
I don't really understand it either. It's probably a combination of many things. The way they market their products, concentrating on high profile bloggers and youtubers instead of "real" photographers. Their products are great and for a long time they were the only manufacturer offering small, full frame, mirrorless bodies. Not counting Leica. They concentrated on the big things like full frame and IBIS, ignoring little things like the viewfinder or weather sealing. I guess some users thought that this, combined with the very spec heavy marketing, somehow made their product and thus them, superior. There is probably also some fear. Fear, that Canon and Nikon enter "their" market and that they are no longer unique. As we all know that happened. And quite a few users, which still had their old lenses, did switch back. When I had my rendezvous with the A7IIII I joined some Sony groups on facebook. To be honest, I was quite shocked at what was said there. There wasn't much talk about pictures or even technical details helping you to get better pictures. It felt like 50% of all content was mocking Canon and Nikon. of course that's not all Sony shooters. Not all are on the internet, not all are hateful and not all are trolls. Some photographers I know use Sony and non of them is even close to what you find on the internet. So somehow the internet makes angry trolls out of Sony users ?1 point -
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Dan Wake reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Well for one thing the grade is pretty bad, and a ND filter is not suppose to change colors at all if it is worth a crap. All it is going to do is let you use a slower shutter speed, or for photo a different aperture for DoF. It should not really help or hurt the grade at all. Now cheap ones tend to shift colors and that is Not what you want. ND filters for video are so you can help keep your 180 degree shutter rule mostly1 point -
Olympus has nothing to lose and no cinema line to protect, and that is why it needs to seriously work on its video capabilities. Maybe it needs to collaborate with someone like Blackmagic, since they do compliment each other in many ways. Olympus had superb hardware (great lenses and OIS in lenses, IBIS in bodies, superb weather sealing, good photography capabilities etc); Blackmagic has superb colour for video and excellent video capabilities and codec (BRAW). They both also have the M43 as a common factor, so it should be beneficial for both, that they support each other. Also, unlike Panasonic, Olympus is not a competitor to Blackmagic and also doesn't have a cinema line that prevents it pushing the RAW capabilities down to lower priced cameras. Blackmagic could get a DSLR sized camera that can shoot RAW (and ProRes, in Multiple Flavours), is weather sealed with IBIS, and Olympus could get a DSLR sized camera that does RAW at a fraction of the cost of most players around, and has features as good as Full Frame Mirrorless cameras and better. They naturally compliment each other. Also the Panasonic and Leica collaboration has shown that even big players need to band together.1 point

Well, the Nikon D850 sensor is not "handicapped" compared to the A7R III. The banding problem in Z7 is caused by the fact That Nikon did not treat the PDAF pixels as it should be in the RAW files. Nothing related to Sony here.1 point

Just a tip : By default, the camera is set to shut down after a given delay (30s or 1min, can't remember), and goes into standby mode. I was surprised when everything went black in the middle of a long shoot ! The setting to change is in Custom Menu => C "Timers AE Lock" => C3 "Power off delay" => Standby timer. I set it to "No Limit". The Everedy day dad has pointed it out in its review, and someone gave him the tip.1 point

Variable ND filters for video?
thephoenix reacted to Martin Matěj for a topic
I have the simmod 82mm and didnt notice any color shift. the leather pouch is nice. The turning mechanism helps to position the filter so you have the small stick in the right spot and I guess it could be used to control the polarisation effect. give it a try but be carefull if you position the filter to max settings it shows x pattern while on position 10 it is fine - does anyone knows if slr magic I or II works the same way? thanks1 point -

Nice shots JG. I'm wondering about the smearing with other lenses. When I had the baby iscorama (focusing one) it really didn't like my KMZ helios 44-2 while I have a very good copy which is pretty sharp wide open with other anamorphic setups. For some reason the baby iscorama and helios just didn't match. I did much much better with the flektogon and a 1.8 zuiko. I sold it a year ago but I'm really interested if this zeiss is better wide open with a good taking lens, especially in the corners.1 point
