The older I get the more I realise that people are mostly fuelled by their irrational insecurities and emotional baggage. I've also realised that people make most of the decisions in their lives (especially major ones) with almost no knowledge whatsoever. Think about buying a house for example - it's the largest investment that most people will ever make, but look at how many people got it so wrong in the US. Same goes with investing in the stock market - I'm not aware of even one economist that predicted the GFC correctly and that's what they do for a living. People are completely rubbish at picking a life partner, look at divorce rates, and those are the ones that aren't still stuck in awful situations by religion, cultural pressures, or economic factors. The general populace are so miserable overall with their life choices that a huge percentage are on some kind of anti-depressant medication. I could go on.... So, if people live their lives with judgement so impaired that they get major investment decisions wrong, choose the wrong partners, can't create happiness in their lives, and then don't even decide to get therapy but opt for medication instead, why would you expect that they will be able to somehow transcend all that and become informed, rational, and articulate people when it comes to cameras? The other factor in this whole thing is that the photography industry is undergoing massive change. Most people don't adapt well to change, and those that are resisting are competing with everyone else for the traditional type of work that they're used to doing which there is less and less of. I think this is the main reason that many photographers are bitter and angry all the time. If you hang out in communities related to industries that are expanding, or where the typical person is new to the field and not clinging to the past then the overall attitude of people is likely to be very different.3 points

Yeah I'm gonna chalk this up as some serious rose-tinted glasses towards those old BMD:s. I'm not saying they're bad but I know I won't touch one with a ten foot pole today - and I used a BMCC almost exclusively for two years. Anything BMCC did the new BMD:s can do - and a lot more. In fact the original color science on the BMCC was kind of a pain in the ass in hindsight. Also consider the fact that you're comparing a camera that's been out for what, five years, with thousands of hours of footage available online, to a brand-new one people are slowly adopting and coming to terms with. Anyways, I'm having fun with my P4K and have already used it on ten or so commercial shoots. On gimbal, as a B-cam for stealing quick shots, and even as a broadcast cam on a christmas cooking show live stream - was able to match it perfectly to the URSA with my own custom LUT and it ran flawlessly through the show.3 points

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Vintage Jimothy and 2 others reacted to Jim Giberti for a topic
Regarding the person who produced the video about returning his P4K in favor of his Micro - from a straight shooting experience, he needs to have his head examined We've got a lot of cameras, mostly BM, and a couple of Micros, whose images I love. In fact I wrote at one tome that if BM would take the Micro cinema sensor and put into a real camera body I would buy them for three times their cost. The Micro is the most disfunctional camera you can shoot. A simple menu change takes forever in any environment. Tiny unrecognizable buttons on tiny stripped down senor box - but what a sensor and color science. And it's that way by design. It's supposed to be a drone or special use crash cam for TV/cinema production - not an actual shooters cam. The P4K is the exact reverse of that - perhaps the easiest small camera to use on set or in the field - a brilliant camera as far as shooting goes. And the idea that upressing the Micro footage in Resolve is better than shooting 4K/UHD on the P4K is a real head scratcher. Just spend some time learning how to optimize the image at aquisition and then how to work with the amazingly maleable image to get the look you want. It took very little time shooting and working in post to get the image to look like the original Pocket or Micro etc. You can't make any of the previous BM cameras (except the UMP) look like the P4K but you can easily do the reverse if you want to learn how.3 points -
Levi Allen, who is freelance filmmaker and a solo adventure documentary maker, has made a bunch of high quality films and made a great BTS video talking about production and equipment and various other things. This series is about people walking slack-lines (the alternative to tight-ropes!) and there's some pretty crazy content. Here are the first five episodes, which IMHO are just spectacular: and here is the BTS where he talks about the equipment he used (watch the above before the BTS because it's got heaps of spoilers) Highlights include: Almost everything shot with the Panasonic G7 in Cine-D He got the Sony A6300 for slow-motion and he thought the AF would mean he could ask others for help as second shooters, but the screen was so rubbish in daylight and it kept overheating that it wasn't much use He shot 4K because he wanted to sell it for more A few shots (mainly the time lapses?) were shot on the A7S but because it wasn't 4K it didn't get used much Drone was Phantom 3 Pro in the Natural profile Rode Video Mic Pro for run-n-gun Rode NTG-3 for interviews Kessler crane motorised slider He used MF primes, mainly the Rokinon 35mm MF He used shots from his iPhone because they were needed for the story Other interesting thoughts: He now owns a GH5 and shoots everything in 60p now so he has flexibility to slow things down in post He worked out the profiles to use in his cameras by doing a bunch of camera tests and looking at the output and choosing the settings He hates PP "Premier Pro is garbage" and edits in FCPX, and "if I was working on just films I would probably be editing in Resolve, but because of my internet workflow and things like that I've been editing exclusively in Final Cut and it's made my doc work amazing" He also then gives a commentary of Episode 4 talking about storytelling and creative aspects, production challenges and being a solo shooter and BTS, as well as equipment. There's a ton of great info in there so I'd encourage you to watch the full BTS for more.2 points

I’ve been posting my work in the “share your footage” thread. You can find some in there and for a fact you did comment on my photography with the Pocket when I posted a website for my work a couple of months ago. Anyway, I’m not talking about A look, as in ONE look. The beauty of higher bitrate, better codec/raw camera is that you can get unlimited looks. I assure you 99% of the “OG” look you’re talking about is hiding beneath multiple layers of color grading, added noise and compression. Just for fun, I’m going to shoot with both my OG and P4K this weekend and then match the footage and post it here to see if you can tell what’s what. Sounds good?2 points -

Yeah, the number of gun related deaths in the UK and the US per 100K of population does have the same rough correlation to the number of guns per 100 people in each country so its not actually disproportionate. It makes a big difference to the overall figures despite that correlation though when in the UK we have 4900% more people than guns and the US where there are roughly 18% more guns than people. I completely respect your right to follow your own country's laws by the way, particularly in the context of protecting you and yours in the face of that level of heat that everyone else is packing I'd be responsible for most of them on an average walk down the high street, thats what scares the shit out of me about them ! If guns were legal here though, all of the murders would be very British and done in a passive aggressive way with a silencer at long range so as not to make a fuss.2 points

I think two of the biggest challenges that we face in photography, and which starts fights, are: People make different kinds of films. I just started another thread with a great BTS from an adventure film-maker who shoots everything 60p so he has flexibility in post with which things he can use for slow-motion. This makes sense for adventure film-making, but would be stupid in narrative work where slow-motion plays very little part. If I had a zillion dollars then the best camera for narrative work might be an Alexa, but if I'm going to jump out of a plane it sure wouldn't be (extreme example) but also if you're running a studio for a game-show then the Alexa is probably also not the best choice. People see differently and have different tastes. Lots of the talk about colour science is about taste, but some people can't see colour that well and don't care. Some people are much more sensitive to motion and care about the 180 degree shutter, whereas others are sticklers for blowing highlights and chase high DR cameras with low noise and >8-bit outputs to ensure that the foreground looks good and the highlights aren't clipped. Most of the "this camera/lens/mic/preamp/tripod/etc is better" arguments are really people judging equipment according to their individual sensory perceptions, their workflow priorities, and their shooting situations and then thinking other people are stupid because other people have different perceptions / workflows / and shooting situations and evaluate differently. I think the solution is for people to be more curious. If someone says something you disagree with, instead of disagreeing with them, try asking them why they disagree, or how they came to that conclusion. This is how to cool a situation and learn something as well.2 points

Don, I have used the camera strictly for personal usage so far with a simple manual lens coupled to it. Reliable focus assist reminds me I will never want to shoot in a smaller monitoring (non-)capability size. And zero need for a rig, actually. On the contrary. Take a look on my work you can follow from my signature. The projects I participate either as producer or/and shooter take a few years before to see the light. Trust my input though: This is the best camera ever designed and manufactured. I deal with these devices for thirty years today. It is not only the IQ, the way the light is handled by sensor, codecs from ProRes to RAW in-camera more than mere range of specs as single promises to sell straight out the paper, also the color science, the ease of use as much as any photo camera for decades, form factor and ergonomics then, so everything. I am completely sold. You should know how skeptical I was on their business policies before. E : -)2 points

I have the Lowepeo Flipside Trek 450 AW and I absolutely love it, far better than the overhyped Peak Design bags. Mine has been to 40+ countries, on countless planes, trains, busses, tuk-tuk’s and so on. It’s survived Africa, Patagonia, hikes up 10k foot volcanoes, treks through Indian cities and it still looks like new. It’s comfortable to wear all day in 100f+ heat, does a great job in heavy downpours and protects your gear well. I use it everyday and if lost I’m buying another immediately. If the differences comparing SLog 2 to ProRes Raw are minor, I have to imagine even less difference when comparing 10 bit NLog to 10 bit ProRes Raw. I’ll need to see footage before I’m convinced. Imo, they should have focused more on fixing requested bugs and adding requested features. Now if this was 14 bit raw video things would be different. But as things stand... Idk. You will not see more dynamic range. That will still be set to whatever it is limited to. They need to put out some footage.1 point -

Yeah, this looks impressive... until you realize he was not actually recovering lost information from an overexposed shot, but rather just undoing the processing that FCPX did to the footage when he imported it. Let me ask you this... if you shot stills in raw @14bit, and they were that overexposed... do you believe you would be able to recover that much detail? Of course not. This video is a excellent example of a YouTuber misleading by not fully understanding color space and the processing that it being applied.1 point -

For Rectilux I’ve used basic white Lithium grease that can be found almost anywhere. A good quality synthetic grease like that is sold in cycle shops or DIY stores. You can buy it in small tubes and the grease itself has a similar consistency as hand cream. In my experience, more specific greases that have thicker viscosity and higher drag values are often harder to thin to get to a desirable friction. There are quite a few synthetic grease brands out there that can work equally well, the trick is (especially with Rectilux) is to coat a very small and even amount throughout the helicoid, then work the action until is becomes smooth. It is always best to ad a tiny amount at first, and then build up the amount of you want more resistance.1 point

I think there's too many people concerned with defending themselves against the people with big problems and not enough concern for actually fixing those problems in the first place. Then again I live in a country so full of socialist communist lefty hippies that the conservative government used a massacre as an excuse to take away all our guns, and now as a forty-something I live in complete repression with only the fact that neither I, nor anyone else I know well, has been directly impacted by gun violence. Naturally, I'd rather be packing serious heat and going to funerals like all the free countries out there. But maybe that's just me?1 point

Ouch.. sorry to hear about your friend. They used to say that the only things you can count on are death and taxes, but they've added another one now - change. We certainly do live in the times of Adapt or Perish. I have a CS background but have generalised as my career progressed, and I now work across the whole organisation, which means primarily working with people. Human behaviour and organisational behaviour do change, but it's pretty slow, and I do get a kick out of it once in a while, so I'm probably better off than the majority of people, even though most of it is pounding my forehead against granite. CS/IS is a difficult area to be in because if you're technical you're having to learn new tech constantly. In comparison to non-technical careers it's like jogging to stand still, running to progress, and sprinting to have a good career. My dad was the head engineer of desktop computers in a large educational institution (10,000+ students, 6+ campuses) and when he retired one of the things that he said to me was "I don't think I have another operating system in me". He went through all the major OS's from CPM to DOS to Windows 7 in his career and that constant burn was one of the reasons that made me move away from the technical side of things. I tell the people that I mentor that if they want to get a pay rise they either have to go up, out, or deep. "Up" is getting promoted through the ranks, which means that you stop doing whatever it was you were good at and change careers into management, which is a completely separate skillset, and which is why most managers are incompetent. "Out" is starting your own business and either consulting or doing some kind of contract work, which means you get paid more than before for the same work, but you've taken on all the risk of not having any work and earning nothing. "Deep" is becoming very knowledgable about a very specific thing, you will get paid a lot because your knowledge is rare, but you have to keep up-to-date and if you happened to be the worlds most knowledgable person about fax machines or steam engines or whatever then bad luck because you bet your whole career on the wrong tech.1 point

You know, the rest of the world seeing Anglo-Saxonic influenced countries as exactly the opposite, as making too many stupid things on a very short time and act as nothing really matters in this life, or the next, while that can be insulting for different cultures and peoples. I am also in the same boat. Looking at something more on the adventure side for the mountains. So far every camera bag from a photography company just sucks imho. Was looking at the trekker the other day and it took me 10 seconds to put it back on the shelf. Why cant they figure out a decent harness system? So far I have narrowed my choice down companies that specialize in the outdoors. Since they know that the harness and frame are the most important aspects for a decent backpack. All day comfort, back can breath, weight evenly distributed. Burton (zoom, Fstop) and EVOC (35L) are on my shortlist. Burton looks like better value, but I have an EVOC MTB backpack that has seen 5 years of total abuse in every weather and if I clean the grit off it looks like new and may last 10 more years. But the price aint easy. Last option is just a decent hiking bag (good harness, frame) with a camera bag inside. But that wont be easy to pull out your gear. I am going to have to be REALLY nice to the wife to get the EVOC. But I believe in buying quality as you only have to buy it once. But the price aint easy. https://freehubmag.com/articles/evoc-cp-35l-camera-pack-review1 point

There are a lot of variables in what you are looking for but here is a rough guide to storage size per min for common formats. There are a number of calculator apps available for Android and iOS that will give you an exact result for more cameras and codecs but the chart above should be enough to get you in the ballpark but the biggest variable though - and one which no calculator will get you anywhere near a solution for - is the shooting ratio. If you were doing a 10 minute UHD film shot in RAW on the BMPC 4K then it would need 123.6GB of storage (12.36 x 10) but that is if you did it in one take of course. The shooting ratio will vary wildly and make the total storage requirement many times that amount but only you will know what that ratio will be depending on the type of film it is and how you will be shooting it and numerous other different unique factors. Just as an FYI, here are the shooting ratios for some feature films. Aim for Primer but budget closer to Hateful Eight !1 point
