Sharp's new 8K M43 camera
tomsemiterrific and 2 others reacted to kye for a topic
I know.. think about how all the forums are full of angry people demanding 8K cameras! Once you understand that this progression is mainly driven by the tech companies constantly trying to find ways to make you keep buying things, then the rationale becomes clearer3 points -
The crux of it is that people were given an opportunity to give a simpllistic answer to a very complex question. Irrespective of the flat out lies, they were asked if they wanted to sit on a chair without being told it was an electric one. For such an enormous change to have been actioned, the threshold should have been set at a much higher level than 50.1% For anyone outside the UK, the impact of this vote might not seem as seismic as they are being portrayed but the underlying factors that caused it should scare the shit out of you. The targeting and manipulation of voters through social and traditional media sounds like something out of a conspiracy thriller but was frighteningly real and comparitively frighteningly cheap. Anyway, time for a break for me.2 points

Unfortunately, the detail involved means that we will be anything but fine. Frictionless trade and with mainland Europe isn't just a buzz phrase but a vital part of not just how much trade we do but how we are able to do that trade. Everything that has evolved over our almost half a century relationship with the EU from food and safety standards, to human rights, worker protection, research projects, funding of development of deprived areas and the two way benefits of freedom of movement will all end in a couple of months. My right to work, trade and latterly live in other European countries that I have enjoyed for the past 27 years will be over. My wife who is an EU national has also spent those same 27 years working in the UK, paying taxes and contributing to the economy will now have to pay a registration fee to stay in our own home. Her pensions and other assets are locked into a currency that has been devalued, her future status is no longer protected by EU agreements and living in a country that is becoming ever more flagrantly hostile to EU nationals. And all of this while we are still bound by the terms of membership so God knows how it will become when the gloves are off after we leave the EU. So we have had to make a decision to open an EU company in readiness and unless a miracle happens and Brexit is halted we will close our UK one because it will just present too many problems to trade with and within the EU from outside it. Without sounding too dramatic, due to the ideologies behind it and the impact it will have on my ability to maintain my career, Brexit has made me a political and economic refugee and I will be leaving the UK permanently. Even if everything is 'fine' in the UK after Brexit, it will never truly be 'fine' again due the fractures it has created and the light it has shone on some ugly truths. And yet we continue to sleep walk to the abyss because of some insane combination of an outdated notion of exceptionalism within the wider world and keeping a stiff upper lip. Summed up really by this from one of our better comedies that I'm sure you are both familiar with From the same programme, this also sums up where we are and what we need at this late hour instead of just blindly walking into no mans land. Unfortunately, all we've got is a government who have handed a £15m contract to bring in the emergency medical and food supplies we will need post Brexit to a ferry company that has no ferries. Not very cunning at all.2 points -

It does seem from an observer’s perspective that Nikon developed their Z-Line from the camera up and Canon developed their RF line from the lenses down. By the end of this year Canon will have a solid lens line up on the market for the R series of cameras and Nikon may still be building their core lenses. It makes sense that Nikon did it that way, they don’t have the capital that Canon has. As far as IQ... I think it’s a wash. You have a beefier codec with a thick image with the Canon but you have FF 4K with the Nikon. You have IBIS with the Nikon but you have better AF with the Canon. You also get the other goodies with the Canon... internal C-Log, focus guides, etc... in the end, I think the R series will be better than the Z series for video but right now I feel it’s neck and neck depending on which features matter most to you. Honestly, @DBounce if you decide to keep the Z6 over the EOS-R, then you may as well sell the C200 and the 1DX ii. The ProRes Raw development with Nikon will give you at least 80% of what you get from the C200 and soon enough Nikon will have a pro mirrorless or even a D850 may be more than enough for your photo endeavors. Not my money or anything so take this as you want, but right now you’re building a weird collection that doesn’t mesh well together.1 point

I've given some thought to the cine glass situation. It's perhaps less of a problem with these mirrorless bodies, as adapter are readily available for both R and Z mounts. They are both great cameras, but if you are in it for the longer haul I feel Nikon will be a better choice. I really do love how quick it is to setup and get a shot with the Canon. I think the Nikon is a steeper learning curve. If the Canon shot full frame it would be a real winner. The low-light AF on the Canon is the best I have ever used. It nails focus in near complete darkness. Which is a good thing, because given the 4k crop, F4 becomes like F7 on the 24-105mm, it's pretty extreme. Both amazing cameras at any rate.1 point

Meh. Segmenting a camera (by its specs/tech) into a range of products is neither surprising nor exclusive to Canon. Take Sony: FS5 can only do 10-bit FHD at 50mb max & 4K 8-bit 100mb max using XAVC-L. It can output 12-bit raw signal direct via SDI. FS7 can do 10-bit 4K60p intraframe at 600mb using XAVC-I. But to record Raw you'll need the $2000 XDCA extension unit. So you also have raw paradoxes there too (where an inferior product in the range can't do 4K 10-bit internally but can do easier/cheaper raw & slo-mo).1 point

Btw, the Tokina 17mm f/3.5 I am referring to is the RMC version, not the AT-X version. The AT-X version may be good as well but I’ve never used one, so I can’t say. Here’s a good write up of the RMC version and his site is a great resource for vintage lenses for video use in general. https://www.vintagelensesforvideo.com/tokina-rmc-17mm/ Also with the RMC Tokina lenses you have a couple extra choices in the wide range if you want to build a quasi set... the 24, 28 and 35mm f/2.8 are all decent lenses. I also briefly had an RMC Tokina 35mm f/2 that was amazing. Stupidly I sold it and haven’t found another one since. The 25-50mm zoom is pretty good. And they made a 24-40mm f/2.8 AT-X that I adore. And then there’s the 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 that is a cult classic and derived from the Angenieux design. Tokina lenses are a good foray into vintage lenses because they are available in so many adaptable mounts, the IQ is really good but with some character and are relatively inexpensive.1 point -

Pentacon lenses are decent but they have their quirks. The Soviets weren’t known for their quality control, so some of their lenses didn’t stand up to the test of time mostly in regards to the aperture. The Prakticar Mount is also a little more obscure so it may be more difficult finding adapters, but I’ve never owned a Prakticar lens, so I haven’t really searched for them. If interested in Pentacon lenses, I’d look for the M42 versions. The Mir 37mm is a classic lens, so if you can get it for the right price, you’d probably be happy with it. The Mir-24N which is ironically a 35mm lens, is supposed to be an excellent lens in the Nikon Mount as well. Zeiss Jena lenses, which aren’t “true” Zeiss lenses are fairly inexpensive with good optical quality... but with questionable build quality as well. But for the price of these lenses, you can easily find someone who can CLA them and make them better than new.1 point -
Yeah, this is honestly one of my problems with Micro 4/3... it’s neither here nor there if you need/want to use vintage or fast lenses. Sigma makes a 20mm 1.8 (the older one) that isn’t too expensive and that will get you around 30mm with the Fuji crop or the Micro 4/3 with speedbooster. If you look for the Nikon version you’ll also have an aperture ring. Tokina (also as Vivitar) made a 17mm f/3.5 that sells for between $100-$150. It is a great vintage lens with loads of character. That would get you the 24mm on the Fuji and around that speedboosted on Micro 4/3. Canon FD has a 17mm f/4 that is really good as well. Hope that helps @thephoenix1 point

I think it's getting more and more difficult these days to get clarity on what people deserve. You're right about the people that didn't vote, but for the people that did, the amount of misleading information around topics like this makes it pretty hard to understand what your choices really are, even if you actually care and put in time to understand the issues. The impact of the media constantly trying to trigger your emotions also doesn't help in keeping perspective.1 point

I had a look through a few of the categories on the Pentax vintage lens site (linked in a previous post) and also did a search on eBay and nothing looked suitable. Vintage lenses seem to be common in 28/35/40/50/80/135mm and everything else is rarer, especially at the wide end.1 point

I'm all in favour of retro fun; I even put a roll of Ilford FP4 through my Pentax Spotmatic recently. There seems to be a very strange understanding of military tactics and weaponry going on here. The scenario that some people seem to be suggesting is that this happens: the people learn that their government can't be trusted for some reason and decide to replace them using force they then stage some kind of guerrilla war against the government forces they win this war because they have a very large number of very low powered weapons If this scenario is really a battle for the entire country, and neither side would hold back. So it wouldn't matter how many AR-15s or even M60s you have, when the army deploys APCs, tanks, and armour-plated surface-to-surface missiles on the ground, deploys drones, helicopter gunships, and fighter planes with air-to-ground laser-guided missiles, and the navy parks a battleship in the middle of every major port city and aircraft carriers out to sea far enough to get clear airspace, the armed population will discover that even if they had 800 trillion zillion quadrillion guns that can't shoot through armour they still wouldn't be much help. Remember that when the entire population is behind a movement then it wins against the government without needing weapons. It's only when it's not a majority of the people that weapons might play a part in something. Therefore it would be more like: some people learn that their government can't be trusted for some reason and decide to replace them using force, and they then stage some kind of guerrilla war against the government forces government forces would fall back to secure facilities and would establish supply lines between facilities and intelligence services would be monitoring communications working out who the leaders were and how things are being organised, potentially shutting down key ISPs etc using superior armour, tactics, military intelligence, and weapons, the government would gradually re-take pockets of resistance The scenario being described isn't like two armies fighting, it's like a team of navy seals in full body-armour with night-vision attacking a tribe of jungle warriors armed with spears. Of course, if it was a large enough group then the government would realise that there's votes in it and so the political landscape would change radically. People don't like to see video of soldiers shooting at their own people, although the US has gotten pretty used to government forces using unnecessary force on its own citizens, the fact nothing has happened in response to that might be a clue about how power really works. So, it would change things significantly, but the fact that the people had guns doesn't tip the balance in any significant way.1 point

Because Andrew Reid and a few others made life here inhospitable for John Brawley unfortunately . Ohhh.... I forgot about Magento until just now! But Magento isn't really a fully fledged CMS in its own rights (or at least it wasn't back then), but rather it was something you used alongside some other CMS like for instance Drupal. How quickly would support for the government disappear once they start attacking their own local population in the USA? It is EXTREMELY difficult to hold land against a hostile armed local population. Having 100 million rifles stored in homes is the best possible defense mechanism a country could have. (both against hostile foreign governments, or your own government) You never know when you might be attacked. That is why it is a "surprise". But also you can own guns for hunting, or sport, self defense, or "just because". Civilian populations almost never ever privately own weapons to attack another country. This shouldn't be a concern whatsoever. Rather it is a very effect means of defense. Exactly my point. Let's compare "X amount per year" spent on local civilians buying arms vs the same amount spent per year maintaining a standing professional army: The first is a more effective defense mechanism. (and less effective at projecting aggressive power overseas! A win-win for global peace) The first is also cheaper on the state's finances. A win for the taxpayer too!1 point

how many space do you need for short/medium length/feature film?
thephoenix reacted to kye for a topic
I buy whatever is cheapest and just make sure it's fully backed up. Also, keep your backup drive disconnected from your computer in case you get one of those viruses that lock up your data. You should also keep your backup in a different location to keep it safe from fire or theft. In having said that though, what was cheapest tends to remain cheapest and so as I've needed more space I've bought similar drives in anticipation of creating a RAID at some point in the future.1 point -
Interesting video, not only for that section but also for more useful tips, like the creative team getting to know the style of the film through the DP shooting his own feet walking through a field, and using doubles for follow-shots, even before the main actors are on-set. I don't know those lenses, but I'd suggest searching YouTube and Vimeo for example video footage and reviews - there are many people who are buying vintage lenses these days so there's lots of information around. Also, google will turn up lots of good information, and remember that photographers often post images from these old lenses and so these photos give a way to see how sharp the resolution of the lens is (4K video is a series of highly highly compressed 8MP images, but 24MP high quality still images are common). I've recently found sites like https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/ very useful as they aggregate reviews, give ratings, and also give price history.1 point -
Yep. Honestly my Canons often over heat shooting in direct sun here in AUS on a hot day shooting stock firmware. When I shoot Raw they don't get noticeably any hotter than otherwise and if we are to believe the ML team; less processing with Raw should actually generate less heat. Canon don't include Raw because they don't want to and if we are to seriously believe they can't (and can't do it reliably) but a team of part time hackers can reverse engineer their whole system to do it... I don't know whether I should really support such ignorance. My 2cents.1 point

Nikon Z6 / Z7 to go RAW with Atomos Ninja V - could Panasonic be next?
Castorp reacted to BasiliskFilm for a topic
You can keep a model on the shelf longer if you keep improving it through its lifetime. Sony have been a bit cursed by releasing so many different models of camera, some with major, some with minor improvements, but with no upgrade path - beyond the fact you could keep you lenses and accessories. To some extent it makes sense to "build in" the cost of software upgrades, as later purchasers will get them included in the price of the camera. Like Apple now does with OSX and iOS updates. There is an argument that not many users use Log output, so perhaps only the few should pay, but there are quite a lot of folk who buy for the flagship features who never use them, so it is probably worth including all possible software improvements to boost sales. This is the same company who produced the retro Df, which deliberately removed video to keep all the photo purists happy! Nice to see they have moved on.1 point -

The G85 has a bit more competitive lifespan in it, but by PhotoKina time Sony will have another a5000- or a6000-series out or announced, and Canon will probably have a 90D. Panasonic will need a G85 replacement with the 20MP sensor, 4K60 8-bit, and still with IBIS of course, and still under a grand, preferably with a kit lens, to compete. The G9 can keep the crazy photo framerates to justify its price, and the GH5/GH5s can keep the 10-bit and high bitrates.1 point
