5K RAW 24p video for $150 - Magic Lantern making great strides on Canon EOS M

If you enjoyed my Super 16mm c-mount adventure on the new EOS M50, you might want to take a look at the latest Magic Lantern endeavours on the original EOS M. Pictured above is mine with the Kern-Switar 26mm F1.1. Read the article2 points -
There is some interesting bits of information contained within the (lengthy) share offer prospectus for Atomos from a few months ago. Aside from them licensing an SoC to JVC for upcoming video cameras (which may mean hello LS300 MKii ?), four new products for 2019 described as 'next generation' and some interesting data about how big the market is for external recorders, which is bigger than I thought. One other thing, though, which crops up several times throughout the prospectus as a risk factor is a dispute with RED. Elsewhere in the document it states that RED are in the same dispute with another party and, whilst it might not necessarily mean its to do with ProRes RAW and REDCODE it does seem a coincidence that the date of the dispute coincides with the announcement from NAB. Hopefully it will get resolved and if it is about ProRes RAW that it won't put the brakes on the development of it and expanding it to other camera brands and models. Perfect lighting kit in a backpack. Aputure Amaran AL-F7.
buggz reacted to amsh89es335 for a topic
I put together a Interview Lighting kit that fits all into a backpack including 3 light stands, batteries, chargers and umbrellas. Got to test it out Saturday night and its perfect for interviews when traveling and I believe everything should be safe to carry on a plane. The new Aputure Amaran AL-F7 on camera LED light' have a very good energy efficiency when set at 55k color temperature and along with the GH5S and A7S Mk ii low light capabilities got me thinking about making a very useful scaled down lighting kit for travel. I am using 4x Aputure Amaran AL-F7 LEDs with batteries. Each NP970 battery is getting little over 2.5hrs on a full charge. I have 10 in the kit giving me at least 5hrs of battery life plus 2 extra when running all 4 lights at 100%. In the images below I have some screen grabs from the interview I did last Saturday. I got with my GH5S with the Metabones Speed Booster F2 at ISO 400 with V-Log. The close up shot was with the A7S MK II at ISO 2000 with F2.8 while being 1 stop over exposed for SLog. I did a lot of looking around and for diffusing the key and fill and the best thing for being fast and compact enough to fit with in the backpack were Westcott Collapsible umbrella. So even though I own a lot of lighting and grip gear I can find myself using this very often. Air Travel would be a big one. Cramped spaces like offices or small living rooms for interviews. But also when I do documentaries sometimes the subject being interviewed can be intimated by lots of lighting and grip gear. This would give me the freedom to make the subject feel comfortable. The kit with everything in the list below was $1050. Let me know what you think, if you have any questions or suggestions for improvements. Here is the list of everything in the kit: 4X Aputure Amaran AL-F7 On-Camera Variable Color LED Light (3200 to 9500K) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1400467-REG/aputure_amaran_al_f7_on_camera_led.html?sts=pi Lowepro S&F Transport Duffle Backpack (only backpack under 100 that fit the length of the light stands.) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/736044-REG/Lowepro_LP36261_PAM_S_F_Transport_Duffle_Backpack.html 3x Kupo Handy Stand (7.4') https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/840712-REG/Kupo_KS041011_Steel_Baby_Boom.html?sts=pi 2x Westcott Optical White Satin Diffusion Umbrella collapsible (43") https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/63314-REG/Westcott_2001_Collapsible_Umbrella_Optical.html Westcott 43" White Umbrella, Collapsible https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/501164-REG/Westcott_2011_43_White_Umbrella_Collapsible.html BUBM Electronic Organizer Travel Gear Bag(3pcs/Set/L,M,S), Cord Organizer(Black) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075Q58KCT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 5x Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) and Charger NP-F970 (10 all together) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPZY0BK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 3x NP-F970 USB Dual Digital Battery Charger https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GPEREXU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ChromLives Dual Flash Bracket Hot Shoe Speedlight Stand Umbrella Holder (Used this to double the LED panels as the key light) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FYF8GXV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ChromLives Flash Bracket Hot Shoe Speedlight Stand Umbrella Holder 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07317T52Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 3-Pack 3-Outlet Grounded Power Cube Wall Tap https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LY5WZVT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03__o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 AmazonBasics 6-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TP1C51M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=11 point -
Interesting, Young was in Black Magic as well, while they took most of the Canopus employees! The agreement with JVC ends June 2019. LS300 was a very promising and groundbraking machine, if they can match the AtomIC1 SoC with a dual ISO variable sensor, then they have a winner in their hands. Imagine a P4K with an APS-C sensor and native m43 mount with inbuild ND (yes, this is still the Holy Grail) and all the rest.1 point

Not bad really. Use the program in that post (MLVapp) or MLVFS if you don't want to transcode (you still need to transcode with an EOSm though because of the focus pixels I think). Honestly I still transcode everything with a GH5 anyway, so I don't see much difference. I like MLraw image better than anything I've used, but all these high res modes lack proper monitoring solutions (also they are all cinema ratios already pretty much which isn't ideal for me shooting anamorphic lenses). I'm really excited to see what they can do with the EOSR, 5Dmk4 and the EOSm50. I still have a few EOSm1s around (was also my first MLRaw camera), I might have a poke around and check these developments.1 point

5K RAW 24p video for $150 - Magic Lantern making great strides on Canon EOS M

The EOS-M is the camera that just keeps on giving. It was my first foray into ML Raw and I failed miserably with it. Soon after I tried my hand with the 50D and thought hmm. With the 5D3, I am a full convert and won’t even think of buying another camera until I see what happens with the 5D4 developments. However, somewhere in the back of my closet, I still have my EOS-M, a few batteries and a slew of SD cards just waiting to be used. This could be a fun way to cure some Mid-Winter Blues. I look forward to your update, Andrew. On another note, I almost bought your 5D Mark III 3.5K Raw guide a couple of hours ago, but I don’t know if I can go without a clean LiveView. Has there been any updates on that front?1 point -

Lenses
webrunner5 reacted to noone for a topic
Dissolving bearings is not fun but it is also not that common either. I am just saying it DOES happen. Even with it, the FD 85 1.2 L is one of my favourite legacy lenses (along with the other FD L lenses I have had). Much better than the regular lenses from all system I have had generally. There really is something for having those aspherical elements in early primes and most others didn't (Nikon did in the Noct and look at the cult following and cult prices they go for). Canon had a couple of L zooms with aspherical elements too that are supposedly good as well As for a cheap 40mm lens that works great on M43, don't overlook the Canon EF 40 2.8 STM used on a non focal reducer AF adapter. I used it on a GX7 with Kipon adapter and the AF (for AFS anyway) was virtually native.1 point -
I hadn't but I've just watched it on YouTube They used to scare the shit out of me as a kid. My Dad preyed on this to keep me from playing in the electricity sub station (it was the 70s, we had a different benchmark for danger back then) by saying the loud buzzing noise coming out of it was from the daleks that lived in there.1 point

Now there's a terrifying combination of words I've never heard before!! In other news, I just managed to score a good deal on a Lomo T-43 40mm f4 lens. At ~$5 including shipping you really can't complain that it doesn't have focus controls or even a mount that you can buy adapters for, so you have to make your own. On my GH5 it'll be 80mm equivalent, and will be competing with my much more expensive 55mm 1.8 Super Takumar and 0.7x focal reducer combination, but in a sense this might be more fun. My plan is to do some free-lens tests and then if it's worth investing in I'll adapt it with the ~$25 for the helicoid adapter, mount adapter, and glue that you need It might be useful to have such a small lens for 80mm - in situations where you want to keep the setup light-weight or compact.1 point

Sharp's new 8K M43 camera
webrunner5 reacted to etudiant for a topic
This is a Foxconn initiative. It has a Canon sized $30B company behind it. Apparently Foxconn is trying to step out of its roots as a contract manufacturer and to achieve end product producer status. High definition video offers them an unusual opportunity to do just that. They are familiar with the technologies involved, but have no existing franchise to nurture. Hence they have the opportunity to disrupt a complacent sector and to develop a new line of business independent of their existing base. Canon's frantic '8K is in our road map' comment suggests they recognize the challenge.1 point -

guns don't kill people, farmers with pretty daughters kill people with guns ? guns are designed for one thing only to kill other things either close up or far away pros : they fast acting... unless badly targeted cons : can be noisy i have guns however i own a farm and they do get used for dispatching sick animals and feral animal control. the vast amount of people in this world do not need guns. if you need a gun for protection then there is something fundamentally wrong with your society. more guns wont fix that all you'll get is more mourning on both sides of a bad equation. with the internet . unfortunately there is no sorting hat that can segregate dumb-asses into a separate kindergarten level like internet. that would be like heaven but more tech inclined and less harps ? so when visiting an online forum one should wear protection. actually protection should be mandatory especially for brief interludes with the opposite gender that would prevent even more dumb-asses from being created. heck lets just legislate to breed, you need a permit and pass a test .... a marriage license just doesn't cut it anymore ?1 point -

Actually, that is base task for compositor's seat in studio, being it with Nuke or Fusion - extracting and playing with plans, paralax projections and z-plates in 3D space But, of course, filming and moving on fresh air, dancing with camera instead of sitting in twilight-zone of vfx room, is much better and natural solution!1 point

Pro Moviemaker magazine
GreekBeast reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
I picked a copy of this magazine up at the airport when I was back on the Island this week, primarily because it featured an interesting piece with Jihua Zheng, the co-owner of Kinefinity. As a gentleman of a certain age (and increasingly uncertain age due to my expiring memory) I have to say its very reassuring to pick up an actual paper publication to read equipment reviews and editorial content. Its also reassuring after all the "are they or aren't they being paid for this?" doubts about YouTube reviews in particular to see real unambiguous adverts on a page so you know exactly where the money is coming from. Ditto that what little advertorial content there is in it being clearly labelled across the page as being so. Also, because it isn't created on the hoof on the back of press junkets or off re-cycled press releases it has a bit more diverse content too rather than just feeding the hype of whatever is the flavour of the month. Or flavour of the second in a lot of cases. For me at least, it provides if not a complete alternative then certainly an interesting addition to the deluge of online stuff. And its a far easier medium to consume when you are on a plane and don't have wifi as well Hopefully it will get the support it needs to grow further https://www.promoviemaker.net/index.php/current-issues1 point -
Yes. It will be published on the 27th. Of this month. And this year I'll put a bit of an update here later in the week with a couple of pictures and a final run list of its functionality.1 point

Sharp's new 8K M43 camera
mirekti reacted to Video Hummus for a topic
I'd take better quality 4K, i.e better dynamic range, 10bit, HDR, compressed RAW codec over 8K any day. 5 years from now I'll take 8K standard. I think people are under estimating the burden of handling 8K video. With media costs where they are at today, 8K is just stupid in a consumer camera. There are a lot of factors that make a particular scene in a video compelling. Resolution is at the bottom. Yes, I'm aware a 480p video is worst than a 1080p, but there is the law of diminishing returns. From most important to least. 1. Audio 1.5 Composition ? 2. Lighting 3. Dynamic Range 4. Bit rate 5. Bit depth 6. Resolution (1080p and up)1 point -

Black Pro-Mist Filter 1/4 to unsharp nx1 footage
iam_andy reacted to HockeyFan12 for a topic
It depends on the camera and camera settings (and what look you like) but imo diffusion filters are a key missing ingredient toward a more "organic" look, if that's what you're after. They add an extra layer beyond even using vintage lenses, and imo it's worth combining the two if you want a "cinematic" look rather than a technical one. I think @Zach Goodwin2 proselytized extensively about them, and while I think he was using stronger grades perhaps than I settled on (don't really remember), I agree they have great value. That said, most on this forum seem inclined toward sharpening video and generally going for a sharper image than I prefer personally. So it is a matter of taste. I like the Alexa, which is quite soft, and I really like the look of 16mm and late-90s films shot by Richardson and Kaminski, which make heavy use of promist, classic soft, and nets. I think JFK is a beautiful movie. (And the Alexa is a weird camera. I'm convinced it has an optical diffusion filter in front of the OLPF similar to Tiffen digital diffusion but that the pipeline also applies a slight wide-radius unsharp mask. Which isn't crazy. Film's modulation transfer function curve can exceed 100% mtf and then it drops off to extinction more slowly than digital; so this approach could emulate that. And give the "3d" look people talk about while still making skin smooth. But this is conjecture.) The issue with black promist (also with classic softs and Hollywood black magic) is that you can see "speckles" in the bokeh, which may or may not be desirable, and at very deep stops sometimes the black dots that mitigate the promist's natural halation come into focus. (Also you need a matte box if you want to use a 4x4 filter, so screw on filters might make more sense depending on if you want to keep your rig small... but 1/4 BPM has a good look. Surprisingly strong, though.) I find these tests interesting: Particularly the latter. It's amazing how close the C300 with 1/4 to 1/2 digital diffusion looks to the Alexa. Imo it's a big improvement, however subtle.1 point -

Don is one of my/our good fellows here. Just stubborn like hell : D He never shot with one or he would arrive to the same conclusion as I've arrived. Today as for instance. I brought with me literally inside my pocket my GX80 for a family's celebration in a restaurant. Great monochrome output BTW. When arrived to home for the second part, I immediately changed for my fav cam ever: the new P4K. I completely missed how ease is to set up and shoot. A pleasure to be with. The more I shoot the more I regret to not have it a few years earlier. It is a perfect device to me and definitely to everyone who starts shooting with one. @webrunner5 dare yourself to buy one mate and you'll never desire to replace it. Mark my words : -) 4592 x 2584 JPEG shot on GX80 1920 x 1080 grab from ProRes PXY shot on P4K 25fps aka 25p Both straight out of the camera with zero grading. Still room for any doubts? When you come from an intuitive menu like the P4K is to a much complicated BORING menu of these small digital devices you promise to yourself to never underestimate these Aussie goodfellas...
