  1. Canon cameras have a lot of things going for them in both the image and non-image departments - from things like colour science and DPAF, to reliability, and to ergonomics and lens selection. Sometimes the internet can overlook non-image considerations like reliability and ergonomics and be caught up in a frenzy of just wanting pure specs like stupidly high resolution, enormous bitrates, and radical over-sharpening. This forum tries not to get caught up in specs-only discussions (although we do sometimes), and we have a healthy respect for the softer cinema-like rendering of film, the lower resolutions from ARRI and pre-4K cinema cameras, but mostly we draw the line at the barely-720p fuzziness that Canon passes off as it's 1080p files. Partly it's because the image from Canon is so lacking in comparison to other offerings at similar price points (or even getting used equipment at half or a third their price points), and partly because through Magic Lantern we've seen what the hardware is capable of producing, and yet Canon continues to protect it's cinema line-up by not wringing the best out of its existing hardware architectures. A lot of people on here started shooting video on Canon DSLRs and have migrated through frustration to the other brands because the image quality just didn't meet minimum standards. In terms of being nice, you won't find people here being nice all the time... however you will find that most people here are forthright with their opinions but are mostly sincere and want to help. Welcome!

  2. A very interesting video about how to optimise exposure on the BMPCC4K from one of the best channels about filmmaking and cameras on YT (IMHO), hope you guys will find it useful! ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8hHFt3ChZ8

  3. Just saw this video and thought it would be useful for those with Dual ISO cameras like BMPCC4K, GH5S, etc.. Includes how Dual ISO works, impacts on DR, and how to expose - really great content from John Hess.

  4. I’m using the 7artisans 35 1.2 for Eos-m, super small setup and pretty awesome lens for the price. Though I think I’m going to get the Viltrox adaptor and Tamron 45mm for the stabilization. I can say that the rolling shutter is a lot better in the 3x3 mode... in 3x3 mode (1736x1158) the rs shows a percentage of 57% (however that translates), whereas 1x3 mode (1504x1920) shows 84%. It seems to get better the lower the resolution, which makes sense of course.

  5. A quick look at it in action from the final testing this week. This is it being used in the reduced interface mode (selectable on startup) which gives you the option to run without focus or zoom individually. The reduced mode is particularly useful for running on really small devices such as the Pixi 4 phone here whose reduced footprint makes them ideal for rail mounting for hands off side operation/monitoring of the camera settings.

  7. https://vimeo.com/312472183 Here is something I shot yesterday using the 1x3 mode, video comes out as 1500something by 1920 (4500something by 1920 after upscale). Tried my best to not move too much bc of the rolling shutter.

  8. I will record something tomorrow. But the preview is pixelated, you can't really focus with that. Before recording you can activate a better mode that lags a lot but gives a real quality preview, so if you are fine with focusing before the shot... Update: Ok, it was too good to be true, the 4K cropped mode 1:1 is 9fps ?

  9. Canon is now the highest seller in the mirrorless market and the DSLR market... I think they’ll be fine.

  10. Have the prices gone down on the ZCam E2?

  11. Yeah the 6D is probably about a stop better at high ISO's in regards to noise performance. Honestly though looking at stills I think if you used post NR, the XT3 would be just as good. Reason I say this is because its holding more detail at the same ISO's. That is more work though which is not ideal.

  16. Looks good, Brian. Really demanding shots in terms of lighting, but you did a great job. Is rolling shutter any better in 3x3 mode, guys?

  19. Good advice for anyone who uses middle grey as an exposure method but using middle grey as and exposure method may not be good advice.....

  20. Lol, I bought my camera a few days ago, I don't have any water damages... I went outside 1 time, so I don't think it's because of this XD

  21. Well yeah, but at least for me it means "Dont stick to the native iso's and try some stuff out if needed."
    1 point
  22. Captain hook from BM shared this on bmcuser. "Native" ISO is what we determine is the best compromise of noise and dynamic range distribution (over/under). It doesn't necessarily mean the most dynamic range, the most even distribution, or least noise. It's more our 'recommended starting point'.

  24. I just don't expect Sony has changed their dated LSI or heat sinks (especially not on a budget model).

  25. I've also tried 1:1 4032x2268 Crop mode which is basically m43 sensor area. With 10bit it's continous, with global draw on it will give a black and white preview for accurate framing while recording. Pretty impressive, I thought 2k was amazing back in the 50d times, but this... Andrew Reid would write: MAGIC LANTERN UNLOCKS POKET4K QUALITY RAW VIDEO IN A 50$ 5 years old canon body.

  26. Yes, but since your iris and shutter determine the look of your footage, by strictly using 400 and 3200, you're essentially locking your iris, shutter and ISOs, which will give you very little freedom in how to adjust your exposure - either NDs or lights. Then if you don't have a controlled environment, you're limited to NDs only. I much prefer to use the ISO to help me expose, rather then limit my shots more than they need to be.

  27. Steve Huff doesn't really like Anything unless it says Leica on it. And even Leica has had it's fair share of turds. Most negative guy on the web. I gave up watching him for over 3 minutes at a time. What ever he likes is the greatest thing ever made. What he doesn't like is total shit. Crazy person.

  28. I'd recommend the other videos from John on that same channel too. Thorough, well researched, clearly explained, and is one of the very few film-making channels that remembers that there were films before the year 2000.
