  1. Yeah I follow 4 people, some with kids that RV and 3 people that are on sailboats, and one on a power boat. I help support all of them through Patreon. They all have jobs they do through the internet. Most of them work for the same company they used to work for. So a person can live on the road as they say for at least several years. I doubt forever kind of thing you could. I am lucky I get social security and 2 pensions. Not rich, but make enough to be pretty free and independent. But if I want to buy a somewhat high dollar item I pretty much have to sell something else I bought to do it. No 2 toys at a time thing. I didn't ever do what I really wanted as I worked in my younger years. I kind of always wanted to have a completely different kind of job every year. I get bored pretty easy. And I also like to always be learning something I never knew before. But when you are married and have children those sort of dreams don't also make any real sense. So you do what you are required to supply, a steady income for your family. Welcome to normal life. But I will be 72 in a little over a month and I know my time is coming to an end, at least to be doing any sort of moving, RVing, walking, hiking on and on, or hell maybe even living to see another year. Never know. I have been rode hard and put up wet as they say. ? No I am not moving to Puerto Rico either LoL. But it does sound a lot more doable than I would have guessed. I sort of envy the Fstopper folks. Doing something they like in a whole new surrounding, meeting apparently some really interesting, successful, friendly people to learn a few new tricks. Whats not to like. Change can be good. It can recharge your batteries. Make it worth looking forward to getting up in the morning. That is something that is very desirable for sure in a happy life, and damn hard to maintain.

  2. Well the update came sooner than I thought. v01.04.00.20 1. Added pro setting when using Osmo Pocket without DJI Mimo. 2. Added option to switch between AFC and AFS when using Osmo Pocket without DJI Mimo. 3. Added Cine-Like color mode to video mode. 4. Fixed issue: after powering off, the gimbal attitude of some devices was in an abnormal position to fit into the cover. 5. Optimized face detection. 6. Reduced focus pulsing in some situations, such as when shooting the sky or at night. 7. Increased autofocus speed when moving Osmo Pocket quickly.

I just spent the past hour looking at this guy’s work... wow. From the comments section of his videos, it seems he mostly directs now but if you go back through his work, he has about a half dozen videos he shot. It seems he started with the 7D and then eventually moved onto the GH4. To keep it lens related, he usually shot with one lens... the Sigma 30mm 1.4. No fancy grading techniques either... just sliders and color wheels. I think I have way too many lenses and am overthinking filmmaking way too much.... Of course, I wish I realized this last night before I ordered that lens...

  4. As someone who has family and spends a lot of down time in one of the most popular areas on the coast of the south of France it kind of amuses me to hear that, as people who live down there all year are always complaining about it and dreaming about going to exotic places (well for them) like Brazil, Hawaii or Australia etc.. Basically, my answer to this thread is the grass is always greener on the other side. That doesn't mean you shouldn't chase that dream (especially if you are feeling miserable where you are) but it can sometimes be more a fantasy or an illusion. I know for many visual creatives & electronic musicians here in the EU, Berlin has long been considered the mecca. I've got quite a few friends that moved there and now are back home (including our own Andrew Reid i believe). Now working/living in several places that's definitely an entertaining idea which I'm considering myself mid-term. Kind of hard to pull off though.

    Fujifilm X-T30?

I think they'll keep the X-Pro line as they are pretty much in a field of one with that type of camera and have such an established and enthusiastic user base for it that they can rely on to buy the next one in the cycle. Even for new users they'll see the X-Pro as a gateway drug to the rangefinder version of the GFX so I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least an X-Pro3. I think the XT and XH line will definitely have to come together sooner rather than later purely because of the fact that cameras like the Z6 are offering the best of both of them (and more) in full frame. I don't think they necessarily have to go full frame (Fuji are definitely positioning themselves that medium format is the better step up) but they do need to have the same features at a price that reflects the perception of full frame always being 'better'. The X-H2 will have to have the video spec of the X-T3 with IBIS for about £1500 to make any sense as a differentiator to the X-T3 (£1300) and as a better value against the Z6 (£2000). After that, I think they should merge them for the X-T4 and if they want to make something video centric then they should go the whole hog and do it in a cinema camera/camcorder form factor.

  6. I think film is a lot like audio, where everything in the signal path just makes things worse, and the high quality stuff still makes things worse, but only by a little bit. I think all the nice lenses must be at least 16-bit ???

  7. Not to Puerto Rico! I'm playing a long game to disconnect where I live from how I make my money, so having a more international lifestyle, kind of like the Digital Nomad dream. I remember when I was young and you'd see the snooty rich people saying "we spend our summers in the south of France" in their snooty accents while looking down their noses at everyone else who can't afford to do that. Later on in life the thought crossed my mind that if you can work remotely (or work online, etc) then you can do that "summers in the south of France" kind of lifestyle too. Instead of buying an average house (the median house price here in Australia is something like AU$800k!) you can live really simply and can buy two or three small apartments in small out-of-the-way towns in various places around the world, and just travel between them. That was about 15 years ago, and now we have airbnb, housesitting, and other sharing platforms, and this means you don't have to own anything really. As soon as you look at real-estate more than a 3-hour drive from any capital cities CBD then prices drop significantly, and so the rent-for-a-few-months price goes down below the cost of renting a not-great place in the suburbs. If you're interested in building capital with property ownership then buying multiples at $100k a pop is still an option, assuming you can navigate the foreign ownership laws of whatever country you're looking at. Possibly the biggest challenge is that you move away from your friends, family, kids, etc. It's a big deal for people who retire to somewhere warmer that they leave behind their social and support networks. My long game is to live between the same few locations and build up networks in each of them. Of course, I have to work out how to pay for everything first Good thread.

  10. No lens will look as good as with MLRaw . My Canon FDs look good on GH5, but they look amazing with MLRaw. Maybe these older lenses just look nicer when you have a fuller colour spectrum, having 8-bit you loose a lot of that at which point you probably only focus on their short comings as vintage lenses (or at least rank them more in the sharpness/distortion category).

  12. This is such a defeatist approach. Instead of looking at the market with a passive attitude and maintain profitability by recycling old tech as much as possible, they could create new trends. There is a huge market ready to be tapped for Vloggers and instagramers. These guys just need something practical and easy to use, that connects to their smartphones without roaming through menus for 10 minutes. Yes Canon is behind in some areas most people don't need 16 stops of DR and 8k. Imagine a Canon Osmo with Canon colors and DPAF. Or some type of M50 with decent battery, 4k, and full smartphone App implementation to pair it with Instagram... No, Canon just extrapolates CIPA figures to forecast the number of 5Dmk4/T7i variants they can sell in this market... So yeah, it's not going to be pretty.

  15. Really interesting Long video, about Fstoppers moving to an Island. I get itchy feet often, moving myself 1,000 miles away from where I live now or more. Not that drastic of a move but.. Anyone else had the desire to just sort of pick up and go somewhere Really different? Not just because of something bad happening where you are located, but just to get a new shot of energy from a new community, a lift in spirits,. A new look at even the same profession, or maybe a chance to change completely. I really never gave Puerto Rico much of a thought. But it does sound interesting, and less of a challenge than I would have guessed. This video might help someone who thought about moving there. It answers a lot of questions about it.

  17. YouTube and Facebook are in much deeper trouble because they've anointed themselves the position of deciding if your video content is fit for their platform. Anything they don't like, they reserve the right to take it down without a meaningful appeal process. That's not a platform, that's a curator. And as a curator, they become responsible for the content on their platform. Much worse situation than Vimeo (and Vimeo lost!). If anyone bothers to sue YouTube over this, it's the end of YouTube. Possibly Facebook too.

@heart0less yeah you have to scroll down a ways to see the stuff he shot. Most of his work is done with crews that he directs but he has about a half dozen videos in there that are great. And I could not agree more about Kendy Ty. At least once a year I watch his stuff and get inspired. I consider selling off almost every lens I own... I gotta keep a couple... and just shooting with a medium wide handheld and only worrying about the story and the composition. And yes... his a6300 work looks great but it’s amazing how quickly it changed. If I was him, I’d buy a 5D4... or M50... or whatever and get back to his basics. Don’t get me wrong, his newer stuff is better than anything I’ve ever done.

Do you remember Kendy? https://vimeo.com/kendyty I still admire his old work and it was done using only T2i and Sigma 30/1.4 Truth be told, since he got himself Sony a6300, I noticed that the newer videos started to lack something organic, something gripping. 24. Raw is all the rage... and it can save the day sometimes. But the truth is if you can avoid the need to shoot in raw you will make your post production much easier. I never shoot raw under controlled conditions. I try to setup my shots so post work involves only minor changes at best. Storage of all that raw data can become a headache quickly. And even though storage can be had pretty cheaply... $3k or so for a raid... physical space for all the hardware starts to become a problem. If Panasonic includes the mythical organic sensor... I believe raw becomes irrelevant for 99% of the user base. But honestly, I see little chance of this sensor making its way into a GH camera any time soon. However, we might see it slow up in a Fuji camera. They partnered with Panasonic to craft the technology. Fixed TC will not happen... they could have fixed it on the GH5/s but chose not to. The 4k slow-mo is nothing I care about. Truthfully, I think I might have used slow-mo once. I don't shoot music videos and when filming my family... well they move at real time speed. I would wager slow-mo is more of a nice to have, but not important to most people here just like it is on smartphones. It's the sort of thing that gets used once and then quickly forgotten about.

  25. I'm intrigued by this because anything involving Berlusconi and the Italian courts is usually, erm, "interesting" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trials_and_allegations_involving_Silvio_Berlusconi I'm particularly surprised by how quickly the Vimeo case got ruled upon considering how many legal cases involving him in the Italian courts have unusually lengthy durations, in many cases long enough for the statute of limitations to run out or for the law to be changed by a government that he was leading at the time. When Mediaset (the parent company) sued YouTube for very similar violations to Vimeo in 2008, it took seven years to be resolved. https://tbivision.com/2015/10/22/mediaset-google-resolve-youtube-row/ That resolution included Mediaset having official content on YouTube so that might also inform what is going on in terms of going after Vimeo. Looking at who, apart from Berlusconi, owns Mediaset, 30% of it is owned by Vivendi who also happen to own 90% of DailyMotion. So both YouTube and DailyMotion by virtue of their relationships with two key owners of Mediaset would certainly benefit from a competitive streaming platform like Vimeo (and by extension Livestream who it now owns) having their wings clipped like this. Having said that, I'm not sure it is anything as united and cohesive as that as, of course, Silvio being Silvio, he is currently trying to to sue the balls of Vivendi as well !

    Fujifilm X-T30?

I guess they take the same approach with the X-T30 as they did with the X-T20. No weather sealing, no battery grip option, just one card slot and not the best viewfinder they have. In video, instead of reading out 5K and downsampling it, they did a 4K pixelbinning but had full sensor width. I expect something similar with the X-T30. Probably not all bitrates are going to come either. I could see the X-T30 be limited to Long GOP and 100Mbps instead of the optional All-Intra and 400 Mbps of the T3. But we will know soon IBIS? 0% chance. That one I know ?

  27. Research a lot about that, since I lived in somewhat humid cities. Best solution is active dry cabinets (Ruggard and Benro have some models in USA, but probably just Chinese models rebranded like everyone else), which have Peltier based electric dehumidifiers. Tried to seal a cabinet and put a like this one (https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Breeze-Electric-Dehumidifier-Portable/dp/B01DC5PPWM/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1548855820&sr=1-5&keywords=dehumidifier - but my unit was from another brand), which is Peltier based too, but the results were not good, and the power supply burned twice. My current solution, that works very well: - Cheap higrometers for monitoring, like: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-Digital-LCD-Indoor-Temperature-Humidity-Meter-Thermometer-Hygrometer-WOUS/182188821858?hash=item2a6b4ccd62:g:zzMAAOSwm6VbrsqX:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true - Clear plastic rubber-sealed food storage containers - I'm using Daiso ones; - Orange tinted silica desiccant (looks like the blue tintwd ones contains cobalt, which could be dangerous for the health when heated to dry the desiccant again). Put the silica inside little netted bags, and put them inside the container with the equipment. The humidity will drop good and fast (sometimes even going to around 10% humidity), then you take the silica out (it could be reused, just dry it in an oven) and close the container again. Humidity raise very slowly afterwards - but the ideal range is around 40%, very low humidity could dry the grease in older lenses). Never had a single lens damaged by fungus. And important - never store a lens with fungus in the same container of the clean one, they can spread.

    Cleaning vintage lenses

Hey Kye, I took apart some old Nikkors and found this dude to be very straight forward. https://richardhaw.com/ For my nikkors it was quite helpfull to have the propper Japanease screwdrivers to not strip anything. Watchout for the coil?!? threading you really have to mark that stuff other wise all is lost, you will loose infinity or close focus afaik. you can always find it again but re and disasamling the Lens more then 20 times and testing for infitiy will drive you nuts, my brother in law did it, I got the lens still laying around here, perfekt for macro stuff but, hmmmm. Keep infected glass away from the others!!! From my point of view, it is the labour intensity that makes it only viable for better ish lenses. I cleaned a Nikkor 50 1.2 from a little fungus and it is great. Screw the coating it is all about character and bang for the buck. Happy fiddling.

  29. I think the Wiral LITE wire rig is something that is bringing interesting possibilities to a consumer level. It is particularly well suited to having something like an Osmo attached to it so you can articulate the camera remotely while it is running and also offers another dimension to 360 cameras. With an Osmo Pocket you have a fully remote controlled articulated 4K stabilised wire cam for €600. A lot of the videos of it (like that one) focus on sports usage of it but there are a number of other examples that show its possibilities outside of that context.

  31. Yeah, I've moved house a lot, and in some ways I feel like if I had just had a single house growing up and one or two as an adult I'd have had more time and energy to invest in other things. Moving house is kind of a major project that you wouldn't want to do more than once a year. I'd be a lot of major projects ahead of where I am now, that's for sure. Then again, if you just stop watching TV and do projects instead you can accomplish quite a lot over time. I read a book about being an expat and it was interesting. One of the things that it mentioned was that every place you go is an opportunity for you to see how other people live and to potentially adopt a few of their habits into your life. Unfortunately as you get older you fit into any single culture less and less, and when you come 'home' you find that you no longer fit in there either. There's definitely challenges that go along with the glossy postcard moments! Actually, we're not so different in terms of size: https://www.commsec.com.au/content/dam/EN/ResearchNews/2018Reports/November/ECO_Insights_191118_CommSec-Home-Size.pdf Average size of new homes in US 202.0sqm and Australia 186.3sqm. Existing houses would be interesting to see the stats on, but I think that the US has more extremes. Yes, there are huge McMansions that Australia doesn't have that many of (we do have some) but we also have far less apartments than the US. It's easy to get caught up in the "everything in the US is bigger" hype (those Texans sure talk a big game) but we're getting closer in car sizes too. The most common cars here are large family vehicles, which are a lot more popular here than smaller cars like Corollas or whatever. The US is still beating us though, but only because they're desperately trying to overcompensate for something... https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/australia-taking-on-american-love-of-big-cars-38036 Besides, Texas is pretty small actually.. it's not even the largest state in the US

  35. Yeah nikkors are not bad, but when compared with Zeiss lens, something inside tells you that the Zeiss has something special. Even when I apply LUTs, it's like the Zeiss increases the Bit Depth lol and allows every color in the footage to be touched. Anyway, I used to use an EIKI 16F 2X adapter for a long time which was decent enough, but in the sample footage I used with the Takumar the Proskar Ishico 2X Anamorphic Adapter. I used to have one of these a while back but the focusing was so stiff. So this new one was in a good nick. Also, no dioptor used. I think I could get as close as 2 and a half feet with a sharp image. As for flaring, I haven't tested that yet as the taking lens is Super-Multi-Coated.

  43. tbf the only people that think the EOS R wasn't a flop is Canon shooters. Being number 2 makes sense as Canon has the largest pool of owners. The reason its number one in Japan is because of the brand name. Canon is the ONLY brand that could release the EOS R and still have it sell moderately well, imagine if the S1, A7III, or Z6 had the exact same specs as the EOS R. Its the same scenario when talking about Leica or Apple.. @ me when Canon Mirrorless is Number 1 in a large market like North America or the EU.

  44. I just finished my first shoot where I used the z6 for all the video shooting. Was a bit painful to shoot (z6+14-24f2.8+ronin-s), but a total joy to grade. The house was pretty easy to shoot though, nowhere near the dynamic range of some properties I shoot, it'll be interesting to see how it fares with them. The ronin-s is miles better than the crane 2 for me. virtually no jitter even with the humongous cam and lens combo. Good job too because the rolling shutter makes warp stabiliser a bit hit and miss. I know some people have complained about the slomo, but I think its better than the gh5's. I spent the first few weeks telling my partner I was going to sell it, but just like the d5500, I'm loving the image. Foibles: flicker from lights. I assume this is to do with the slow readout too. Never had this issue with GH5. Its fine if I leave the shutter on 1/100 or 1/50th, but problematic if I want to use an auto mode. I noticed some flicker on manual with auto iso. Have no idea why that should happen. I know people dont post there own work a lot on here, I think more people should.

  47. There has been some management change if I am not mistaken. It is true that they have sometimes added some functionality but never at this level. One reason could also be that other manufacturer have come with 10 bit video just after them and just like that they where just in the pack, with Pana and Fuji with 4k 60p. As a Nikon user, every time Nikon came out with some new video tech, but just at the same time someone came and just took the limelight out of them. Even if I know how good the Nikon video image is for quite some time, most people consider them as not good or only photographic centric company. This time would have played the same way, the Z6 would have been only for Nikon connoisseur. The rest would have still been Sony, Canon, Pana or even fuji video users. When you think the A73 was considered game changing like only 9 month ago and the z6 more or less beats it in every way, this tells you how low Nikon is in the video community. While now, with this RAW upgrade, they clearly make a Canon 5D move in 2008. All the others, except Fuji are scratching their heads. This would kill a lot of sales for Canon, Sony and Pana if they put RAW in their 2000-3000 mirrorless camera in their video camera line.

  48. Most fun to shoot with? I've owned everyone of these cameras on the list except the BMPC. By far the most fun is the X-H1, followed by the Nikon Z6. When I go out to shoot I pick up the X-H1, with a camera bag with Rokinon EF mount lenses, and three EF to F mount adapters: standard adapter, adapter with a throttle variable ND filter, and an adapter with speed booster---and get ready to have a great time shooting. The last thing Sony needs is to go punk. Sony needs to go Mozart, or Brahms--or even Wagner. Anything is better than their devotion to the Zombie apocalypse look.
