Seriously this is great for them. I love Puerto Rico, a beautiful underrated island. Unlike many Caribbean places, the island is quite big with a lot of diversity. Not much tourism beyond San Juan and a few stupid places. You can totally find beautiful pristine beaches with 3 people standing there. There are jungle, coast, mountain, lakes, surf spots, rivers, etc. The food is delicious and the criminality is not bad for the region. As a US territory, it has the best of both world: the relative good infrastructure and service of a developed country (highway, stores, emergency services) and the exoticism of a tropical island. No need to deal with customs, immigration and shipping tax. The island is very well connected by airlines with plenty of cheap flights that deserved many cities in the east coast (Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, NYC, etc.). Hell, I would go there to if could. They got plenty of tax incentive for their business and they probably got this mansion on the beach for the price of a 2 bedrooms in a major US city. I did this short video showing the island lat time I visited, super cool place3 points

Aren't you waiting for the Panasonic S1?
IronFilm and one other reacted to Dimitris Stasinos for a topic
It seems the Pana has adopted Sony's pattern in their mirrorless names. We have a plain S1 and S1R so maybe a model named S1S will follow later this year just as G5S came after GH5. I haven't seen a single rumour about this yet but it's very logical and possible to happen. Maybe they are waiting for A7 SIII to come out and then fight back. Given the fact that the pricing is on par with Sony, making them serious investments, i wouldn't buy any of these two at the moment (maybe a second GH5 would be a better purchase). Also, the pricing of the 3 new lenses is not competitive at all. These are normal prices for full frame lens but quite expensive for Lumix users that will make the jump into the new system. The new 50mm lens is seriously overpriced. I am curious though to see the build quality, hoping that it will be a step up from Pana's MFT line with their lame plastics.2 points -
Compared to the Sennheiser UHF stuff the Sarmonics are way cheaper but its more or less the same against this Sennheiser 2.4gHz system is what I was referring to. The XSW-D ENG kit has the lav and transmitter, the XLR transmitter and one receiver. Adding an additional receiver brings the whole kit up to around £400 which is the same amount to have the equivalent twin channel Saramonic UHF setup. I think for an awful lot of people with only a £400 budget for a new wireless setup for a DSLR etc this Sennheiser 2.4gHz system is going to be by far the better choice. I've got a Saramonic system and, yeah, well...its OK but I w ul t w n o r ly on t fo pa d w rk Apologies for the dropouts there2 points

I hope so, though I can see them just thinking full frame and 4k 60p with external 10 bit is good enough. Considering no other camera has those specs. Who knows though. If it has internal 10bit 422, that might mean the price of the GH5 and GH5S will drop, which would be good since I am considering buying one again. Here's hoping to that ?2 points -

Because of the SL connection, there are used lenses out there you can buy right now that will work with it but you'd have to be quite keen to buy them Thats actually one of the cheaper prices I've yet seen for that particular lens to be honest so maybe this launch is already having an effect ! Again because of the SL connection, smart adapters do exist to buy today from Novoflex who produce adapters with AF from EF and Nikon to the L mount which are about £350-400. The Nikon one has a major caveat though in that it will only work with the newer lenses with electronic diaphragm control. This is an area where you would hope that Sigma will be able to step in with an L version of their MC11 adapter for EF at least which should be considerably cheaper. I doubt they will be doing anyone that favour for a while though as they'd sooner you buy their new lenses for it ! For everything manual, the M mount adapter obviously gives you the ability to put Leica M lenses on it (not just the expensive stuff but cheap fast full frame Voigtlanders and 7Artisans) but also acts as a gateway mount to put pretty much all other lens types on via adapters. The L mount was obviously very niche up until now as it was a Leica only thing but I expect to see a lot more of the cheaper convertor manufacturers bringing out direct mount conversions so that you don't have to stack adapters like M>EF>R to get Leica R lenses on it etc1 point -

RE: comparison test... IMO this test should be performed outdoors where the BMPCC shines. Also, the test should include IR Cut filtration... with and without. I have noticed what appears to be IR contamination in P4K footage and others online have thought so too, but the believers adamantly fight against its existence. I’m very curious to know if I ever get my hands on one, if I’ll need an IR Cut Filter. Another question with the P4K compared to the OG is that the P4K does not handle highlights as well... so a test shot showing highlight rolloff would be excellent.1 point

I am a hobbyist enjoying the GH5 and have many lens options already secured, anamorphic as well. I think this kit will last me for a long time, I would have to see a huge revolutionary development for me to think seriously about upgrading. Also, the cost of the higher pixel model is currently prohibitive to me.1 point

I haven’t been this excited about a camera launch in a long time. I’ve been hoping for a full frame camera with GH5 specs for awhile. Hoping the XLR adapter is compatible and maybe has a surprise or two like internal NDs... I’m a bit worried now that maybe their “Without Compromise” is really for photos and they may only offer 10-bit via HDMI. though the EVA-1 update gives me hope that this will have 10-bit H265 internal. Perhaps raw out in the future like the Nikon.1 point -

Yup, and the "merging" of them means keeping the name of one line up (probably X-T) and dropping the other (probably X-H, which has only ever had one). Yup, I think Fuji is being smart in not attacking the giants head on with FF, but instead attacking from below (APS-C) and from above (MF). That would split up their line up too much into too many more types.1 point

Nice video! It is very clean as @User says, but that's a style unto itself, so why not I especially liked the night time lapses and the drone shot following the bird, very nicely done! Just because you live in three places doesn't mean you can't go on holiday! I think with things like airbnb it's probably easier to rent rather than buy and have all the ownership hassles. Of course, you can only live with what you can carry around, so no having heavy possessions like a large monitor, decent studio monitors for editing, a solid coffee machine, etc. These things are affordable and you could buy duplicate setups for each place, but if you didn't own them then carting them around would be a hassle, especially if you need to fly to get between your residences. Wherever I go I like to have a quick look at real estate prices and look for the lowest price of anything available. I understand that you can't just say a house a quarter the size should cost a quarter because it costs more to build a bathroom than a bedroom, plus there's an overhead for it being useful (as a place to live) but you really should be able to buy a tiny studio apartment for $50k in most major cities. That doesn't get you around the foreign ownership laws, but I'd have a few here in Australia and spend time between them when I could. It would also sort out lots of problems with housing affordability and some of the social problems surrounding it. I've followed the Tiny House movement for some years now and that's quite a promising thing. Not necessarily because a caravan built like a wooden garden shed is the answer, but because they're pushing the perceptions of why we need to have large houses. In the US, and lots of countries I believe, there are minimum sizes for building houses and I heard they were introduced during an economic slump as a way to ensure the building industry had more to do. It will be great to see those standards relaxed, even if other more relevant ones are to take their place, as it opens up a lot of possibilities.1 point

Come to Greece gia na ti vris ("come to Greece to feel cozy about it", or something among these lines. It was a line from a cheesy 80s movie here!) With 300-400.000AUS$ you can probably buy a family house, an olive grove, and some other Mediterranean trees, being equally close to a mountain or the see, while beeing a few hours away from a major city, and less, from a major archaeological site. Also, you probably get a passport with it! Greece needs the smallest imvestment in land to get a EU passport, that is one of the reasons a lot of Chinese businessmen buy houses here. That, and the hundrends of habitable islands. Land is not very cheap, like some 3rd rate country, but you are living into EU, on a "western" influenced country, that almost all speak English, adequate infrastructure, and relatively, a very low crime rate (it used to be no crime at all a few decades ago, we literally were sleeping with doors and windows open, during the summer, until recently).1 point -
@webrunner5 @thebrothersthre3 @Emanuel I agree that we should be able to degrade the P4K footage to look like the older cameras. Things like bit-depth, resolution, or noise can't be improved, but given a sufficiently high-quality source I think that the 'look' should be able to be replicated. If anyone owns the P4K and other relevant "classic" cameras and is willing to shoot a short clip of the same scene (with both cameras right next to each other and recording at the same time) then I'll give it a red-hot go to "fix" the P4K footage and share the settings of how I got there.1 point

I don't think this is how it works. Yes, they can probably spread, but I get the impression that viewing infected lenses as contagious and the rest of the world as sterile is missing the point. All the articles (including that one from Zeiss) say that fungus is everywhere, in the air. Ask yourself how the spores got to where they are in these lenses - between two glass elements with only a tiny gap between them. I'm pretty sure that fungus spores can't move, so this is where the spore landed. This is a fun article: https://www.uni-mainz.de/presse/13180_ENG_HTML.php So, either you never take your camera out of the box (actually, they don't box them in a clean room - too late!) or you just store things so that they don't grow. I'm kind of tempted to use the other ingredients as they have them in the grocery store, and whatever I post here will be useful to more people when I work out the concentrations etc. It would be nice for this thread to be the one I was looking for, instead of the blind-leading-the-blind threads or only-half-the-information-required tutorials.1 point

Canon predicting a 50% decline in sales units in the next 2 years
webrunner5 reacted to Robert Collins for a topic
Canon has maintained their market share of ILC near 50% for the last few years which is pretty remarkable considering their sensor tech is well behind. I think though, that this market share in units has been achieved by dominating the entry level cameras with eos-m and the Rebels. Seems to me they have ceded much of the FF high end to Sony (coming from a low base) and APSC high end to Fuji. Just got back fron a trip to Ethiopia with 11 Thais - just 2 x Canon (5D) and both of them had Sonys, 4-5 Sonys, 3-4 Nikon, 2 Fujis, 1 Leica, 1 Hasselblad. The problem for Canon at the lower end is that it is these cameras that are most vulnerable to erosion from Smartphones. The fact that they see a declining market also implies little investment. And as the world becomes mirrorless, I think Canon's market share is certain to decline.1 point -

I was there for the first time in December, family in tow. It was a great trip, just the right amount of difference as you say, high-tech toilets included! I've read and heard so much about Japan that I felt like we didn't scratch the surface much. We stayed in an airbnb away from the tourist areas and caught trains everywhere, but I think we just didn't get off the beaten path as much as I would have liked. I would have liked to go to some of the more local food places, ramen especially, but the kids are picky and getting four adjacent seats in those tiny places where it's just the chef and the vending machine outside seemed pretty unlikely. We were only there for a few days, so if there was a bit more time I might have ventured out by myself and blundered through a some local experiences. I've put it on my (very short) list of countries to re-visit. Most countries get put a long way down the list when you have a choice of being somewhere you've been before or visiting somewhere new, but Japan is an exception for me. The other is Hong Kong, which I really liked - stress free with plentiful English speakers, but busy and interesting with lots of foreign things to look at and experience. It's gradually getting absorbed into China, so the homogenisation of globalisation will be slightly counteracted as it becomes more Chinese again. I used to pride myself on not watching TV, but I think I have to shift my perspective on watching YT to it being the same as TV. That will be a bit of a shock internally when I do! You're right about where you live being less important than how you live. Wherever we live, if tourists visited they'd be fascinated and taking photos of all sorts of interesting things that we drive past while thinking about going on holiday to wherever they live. My list of places I think I would like to live in part-time is Australia (base of operations and family), Hong Kong, and somewhere in Europe. The wife is pretty fond of Italy, but we recently spent a month there and the people weren't as friendly as she was anticipating. I've got friends who live in Spain and they say it's nicer than Italy and a lot cheaper too, but they'd have to convince the wife, and the heart wants what it wants and all that1 point -

Honestly, this whole statement seems odd to me. Why would they invest so much R&D into the RF line only to stop producing cameras? I think what you are seeing is the beginning of their camera line consolidation that has been rumored for awhile now. They will not continue with so many lower end consumer models while still investing and producing the mid tier and pro models. Personally, I think the RF Mount was a dumb move and they should have stuck with EF. They could have introduced some great primes and internal mechanisms that would have benefitted all of their current lenses. As is, these new filter adapters (which are really cool) only benefit the EF Mount or lenses adapted to EF... so their main camera mount cannot benefit from it... it makes no sense.1 point -

Thanks everyone. The YouTube footage doesn't look very good to me, and that's too big a rig to carry around and looks hard to balance. I think I'll stick with handheld for shooting inserts and stuff. That might be the best option for me. I'm not sure how good the autofocus is, but if it were more affordable and the autofocus were any good that would be pretty amazing. Yeah, agreed. For this project I'll just stick to handheld, and I agree the above rig is too unwieldy to be practical, but I don't think a Ronin- M (which seems to stabilize better) is quite portable enough.1 point -

I am on the verge of getting a p4k but to really shot it stable you need to rig it up. With z6 the only rigging to be done is add the ninja Ibis should do the rest. For me it seems still the smallest package. hybrid, continues af, Ibis, raw, in a10x15x15cm package, jfc. Specs wise it is mind blowing. Reality not so much, yet. Motion would be great, maybe a base that leans the camera left, then upright and right, then upright and back left again... It would move vertically a bit, but they don't need to be kept level, so that might work. Probably your bigger issue would be keeping it from moving if it was on a long pole. You'd also want to keep it away from objects in the foreground too, as they would show off any camera movement there was, unless everything was moving of course. In terms of the edges, they used to not be that great but they're pretty darn good now. Have a look at this to get an idea of it. There are a few times you notice the edges, but it's basically seamless. You don't want to crop in that much TBH, because it has to fit the entire 360degree image into the 4K / 8K / 11K resolution, and also into the bitrate. An 18mm lens on FF has a horizontal angle of 90 degrees, so a quarter of the width and something like a quarter the height depending on aspect ratios. This would mean that your frame has only 6% of the bitrate of the full capture. That's why they're only currently usable for really wide shots, and even then the compression is still really obvious, even when put through YT compression. If you were concerned about the edges of the lenses then you could just turn it around so that one side of the camera is lined up with the main shot you want, so the stitching and pixelation etc is towards the edges of the frame. Obviously if you're carrying it around freehand then you'll end up using the bits on the edges of the lenses, but if you just plant it for a static shot then it wouldn't be too hard to pay attention to which way it was facing.1 point
