  1. Nice piece. Oh and the cheque is in the post for this plug Mind you, I hope the notes he was taking were along the lines of "lets track this maverick down and license it" rather than "lets track this cheeky bastard down and sue him" !

  2. For long-time GH1 to GH5 shooters like myself, loyal from the beginning, at a time everyone else was shooting Canon, the S1 is a milestone. I have a bit of an emotional attachment to it already, being the first Panasonic full frame camera. It is not my first L-mount camera though. I’ve been shooting with the Leica SL for a few years now and it is still the most clean, ergonomic, minimalist full frame mirrorless body. It cannot, however, match the sheer size of the feature-set on the £2000 Panasonic S1. Read the full article

  3. i did move! ive spent most of my life living in southern california, san diego and LA, surrounded by tons of people, traffic, all that. lived in NYC too. i moved to the mountains to a small town of less than 3000 people, and i LOVE it. so good for my mental health! ive done my time in the cities! so happy to be gone, the view out my window is WAY better

  4. Seems there are probably enough of us on here with the same idea who live in enough different countries to form our own internal AirBnB to pull it off with. If we all agreed to a minimum standard of tripod and lights etc being left in each of our houses then we would all be able to travel light as well !

  5. Our weather is crappy through until about Wednesday so I'll start doing some outdoor shots first since they are the easiest. I'll shoot each in succession and pay attention to shooting things that don't have a ton of change from minute to minute. All on 24-70, and closely match focal length. I'll match the f stops and shoot all with and without IR Cut.

  6. "It is not that fucking tinkerer that forced us to release Cinelike-D for the GX9?" About DFD: hope that Panasonic this time includes non-Panasonic lenses. If they don't support DFD for the Sigma lenses (looks like they will convert all their E-mount lenses for L-ḿount too), the system will be in serious trouble.

  7. @Andrew Reid Hey Andrew, great interview. I really like the introduction. Awesome that you had a such an open talk and constructive time with the Lumix S1 team and its leading gentleman. The current codec choices are Lumix G7 territory, which would not make me consider to buy this camera. I hope for GH5 codec choices, ALL Intra included and full VLOG. Then this would be my first full frame video/cinema camera. All full frame GH5 with full VLOG and without artificial sharpening and good battery life- here is my money! For now these codecs area available, which give Lumix G7 and GX85 quality.

  9. It is 72 in HEVC so more like 140Mbps in H.264.

  11. I think it is a bit more complicated than this. I get the concept that if you are a 'video only' shooter then the GH5 (or its successor) makes more sense than FF. But FF for stills trumps M43 for stills any day of the week. So a 'video/stills' shooter will probably prefer an S1 over a GH5 for the improved stills capability even if the video doesnt quite match the capabilities of the GH5.

  12. Not that I know of. Really hope to see a fix to color science 4 soon (BMD UMP and Pocket 4K). Would recommend not to shoot any ProRes footage at the moment as the issues are baked into the footage then. Using raw it's not a big deal.

  14. Wow you put your GH5 to good use! That is great. And not a lot of Slo Mo LoL. Glad it worked out. Boy too many people there for my liking. Not a fan of big cities, but a great place to shoot though. I really like what Ming Thein can do photo wise in big cities. He has the eye for it.

  15. The fine gentlemen over at Cinema5D are reporting that 4K60p can only be captured externally. Is this true? Andrew can you confirm? I understand the APS-C crop, but can you record 4k60p internally on the S1?

  16. This is too low. The un-hacked NX500 shoots that, and that is a 4 years old tiny camera that cost 750€ kit when new. This is too low for a 2019 un-released yet, camera. Also, the NX500 can shoot double, or more, than that, and 2.5K also, with the hack. 72 H265 is a lot better than a similar number in H264, but certainly no 144Mbps. No way. Panasonic said it, this is a photo camera first, that can do alright video too. They didn't lie! I believe the power of the consortium are the total lenses that 3 big companies can offer on a short period of time, but this is still to be seen. Do not see myself as an early adaptor in any of those! P4K or Z for me.

  17. Until half your shots are out of focus. I think Panasonic dropped the ball on these cameras. Great AF has to be part of the equation for any new camera... for both stills and video.

  18. It's comparable to 150Mbps in H.264 Nothing to write home about, but at least they offer HEVC. Overall it doesn't look like the camera is aimed at the video market, as it's seems aimed mainly at professional photographers

  19. Colors look very pleasing at first sight. The only thing I was truly hoping for was a 4:3 video mode so I can adapt my 2x anamorphic setups in s35 crop mode. According to brand ambassador Jacob James there's no 4:3 with the current FW. If they will implement a 4:3 mode with supported IBIS like in the gh5 I might be aboard. If it can do 4/6k in photomode at 30fps 4:3 I don't see why anamorphic wouldn't be possible with a FW update.

  20. Ask them for internal LUT support please. ( I think you already did but not sure they understood) For both video and stills So when I want have a nice look I dont need to go in post processing on an external device. Especially important to show a good looking jpg direct out of the camera to a cleint on set

  21. No worries. Let's hope his translator translated the plug. You never know how much gets through The colour science should be interesting on this one especially when it gets the 10bit update. Immediately apparent it beats Sony!

  22. The S1R is very, very similar to the Leica SL in dimensions and weight (**cough** what a shocker **cough**) so people can do a fairly accurate comparison already on camerasize.com Here it is against the GH5.... It is a lot heavier of course but some heft, as you say, is no bad thing when it comes to balance especially as this being a full frame camera it will invariably be having more substantial lens lumps put on it. I think one of the factors regarding the weight that is less of an influencing issue for people than it was a couple of years ago is that gimbals can take much bigger payloads now.

  25. Full video specs being out, this camera is a disappointment: - massively heavy - 5y old AF for video - overpriced - poor codecs show (and this has been confirmed by rumors) that a proper video body will come later (like the A7S line) - poor lens choice I am waiting for the S1H and A7SIII

Yeah that whole rig is overkill for the average person. A C100 mk II and a Canon 100-400mm and a 1.4 extender would get the job done. I can't see a DSLR or a Mirrorless using gloves working as well as a Cine camera with all the buttons they have. But I guess a Smartphone could work LoL. Have to get a little closer to a Polar Bear than I would like but..

Agree. They said that it takes two people to set it up but then a single person can operate it, which seems ideal. If you were any good as a wildlife photographer then I'm sure you could put that to good use. Anyone who is travelling the world may very well be going with another person anyway, so that's not as big a deal as it sounds. It's also not as much of an investment as it sounds considering that the image quality is very high and the costs of travelling to the exotic locations, getting guides, etc would be considerable, especially over a multiple year timeframe. I've been contemplating a trip to Antarctica as part of my bucket list and considering the costs involved I'd definitely be taking some serious camera equipment, especially renting some serious glass. Not suggesting that I'd rent that one (!) but those long lenses really are the tool for the job. Personally though, I'd make sure I took multiple camera bodies as a backup, and having two bodies means that you can always have a short lens on one and a longer one on the other, like the pro event stills shooters do. With my GH5 I can also take advantage of the crop factor to turn more reasonable lenses into hugely long telephoto lenses too, saving considerable weight as well!

  30. I think Blackmagic ought to at Least get off their ass and tell the truth up front right now what the hell is going on, and when they REALLY expect deliveries to All countries. I realize they are a small company, but you are allowed, no matter the size, to let people into what is happening. This shit does effect peoples lives, and livelihoods. Jesus.

  34. True. I'm not sure why you're pointing that out, but ok 70m2 is tiny! I lived in an 80m2 two bedroom (it was built as a granny-flat by a friends parents to retire in, but they moved out because it was too small). It was a little larger than it absolutely had to be, with a small office and an ensuite in addition to the bathroom / laundry, but it was smaller than the two-bedroom unit I used to live in. I can't imagine that there are enough 1 or 2 bedroom places under that size to offset the staggering number of 3 or 4 bedroom houses that fill the suburban areas of every city and town here in Australia. It would be interesting to see some stats on existing dwellings but I can't imagine the average is that small. That sounds like a pretty nice rotation! I'm guessing that you have ties to Poland? it's not normally on many people's 'must-see places" lists

    ANAMORPHIC PHOTOGRAPHY

Go to image size, set mode to percent and set the width to 133%, leaving height at 100% if you want to maximize image size. you can also leave the width at 100% and set the height to 75%.

  40. Seriously this is great for them. I love Puerto Rico, a beautiful underrated island. Unlike many Caribbean places, the island is quite big with a lot of diversity. Not much tourism beyond San Juan and a few stupid places. You can totally find beautiful pristine beaches with 3 people standing there. There are jungle, coast, mountain, lakes, surf spots, rivers, etc. The food is delicious and the criminality is not bad for the region. As a US territory, it has the best of both world: the relative good infrastructure and service of a developed country (highway, stores, emergency services) and the exoticism of a tropical island. No need to deal with customs, immigration and shipping tax. The island is very well connected by airlines with plenty of cheap flights that deserved many cities in the east coast (Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, NYC, etc.). Hell, I would go there to if could. They got plenty of tax incentive for their business and they probably got this mansion on the beach for the price of a 2 bedrooms in a major US city. I did this short video showing the island lat time I visited, super cool place

Correction... it seems he IS shooting 1080p on the a6300 and still with only one lens. He shot this with the Sony 20mm in 1080p sLog2... it’s pretty detailed, I thought the 1080p on the a6300/a6500 was supposed to suck? This one I quite liked as well. I assume he used the same lens... I still prefer his T2i work but I must say... the guy is talented.

  42. Me and my better half have been living the dream as it were of working in one country while living in a different one (UK and Spain) for a few years. In her case, its quite static (UK from Spain) but with me, depending on what it is I'm up to, I will do jobs in both countries and also other EU countries as well. It works really well and completely seamlessly (with VOIP, calls are transferred from her colleague as though she was in another room rather than another country) and the lifestyle difference is fantastic, particularly for her as her commute to work lasts about 15 seconds each way rather than 45 minutes each way. I would definitely recommend it if you have the sort of job (or can even create or learn the sort of job) that can be done remotely or is an easily re-locatable skill. What I would caution though is that if you are doing it as a mixed nationality couple then you somehow safeguard against the possibility of one of your countries conjuring up an omnishambles that completely torpedoes all that as ours will be in 58 days, 7 hours, 53 minutes and 27 seconds from now At which point, I'll be a non-EU citizen trying to live and work in an EU country and she will be an EU citizen living in an EU country working for a non-EU country. Currently browsing short term rentals in Tokyo....

  43. Yeah I follow 4 people, some with kids that RV and 3 people that are on sailboats, and one on a power boat. I help support all of them through Patreon. They all have jobs they do through the internet. Most of them work for the same company they used to work for. So a person can live on the road as they say for at least several years. I doubt forever kind of thing you could. I am lucky I get social security and 2 pensions. Not rich, but make enough to be pretty free and independent. But if I want to buy a somewhat high dollar item I pretty much have to sell something else I bought to do it. No 2 toys at a time thing. I didn't ever do what I really wanted as I worked in my younger years. I kind of always wanted to have a completely different kind of job every year. I get bored pretty easy. And I also like to always be learning something I never knew before. But when you are married and have children those sort of dreams don't also make any real sense. So you do what you are required to supply, a steady income for your family. Welcome to normal life. But I will be 72 in a little over a month and I know my time is coming to an end, at least to be doing any sort of moving, RVing, walking, hiking on and on, or hell maybe even living to see another year. Never know. I have been rode hard and put up wet as they say. ? No I am not moving to Puerto Rico either LoL. But it does sound a lot more doable than I would have guessed. I sort of envy the Fstopper folks. Doing something they like in a whole new surrounding, meeting apparently some really interesting, successful, friendly people to learn a few new tricks. Whats not to like. Change can be good. It can recharge your batteries. Make it worth looking forward to getting up in the morning. That is something that is very desirable for sure in a happy life, and damn hard to maintain.
