  1. I saw a video on YouTube about external recording ProRes on the X-T3. The external recording source files showed even more of the temporal filtering issues, here's a download-link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sb0MH4soxt-Kqtf0jiYXc4dN0u5U-iFD/view?usp=sharing The GH5 (after firmware 2.0 and lots of complaints) and the A7sII don't suffer from these issues. The GH5(s) only has to deal with oversharpening still. The Z cam E2 will offer a switch to disable temporal noise reduction soon. Fuji and Sony on the other hand don't bother fixing these problems. I honestly don't understand why many cameras show the exact same artifacts my old Grundig CRT TV showed in the late 90s... ?

  2. I used the EOS R for 4 days and loved everything about it except no 4k FF. I think I might have bought it if that feature existed on this camera. Here’s a couple of stills i shot w/ it.

    universal baseplate?

This isn't really my area, but if you want a flat bar that has multiple points with 1/4-20 screws then search in bay for "flash bracket" and look for these things.. They come in various sizes and the cheap ones are aluminium but I've also got a larger one that is steel, so sturdy enough. Not sure if they're useful, but just in case you weren't aware of them Nice setup! There is a certain satisfaction in building something highly functional that is also simple and light-weight. Maybe I should start a "Rig porn" thread!!

  7. We talk about earning money making films, but there isn't a thread for it, so I thought I'd start one. Contribute anything you think is useful! Levi Allen just posted his year-in-review video and it's got a bunch of useful content that might be valuable to people. For those of you who don't know Levi, he runs a one-person production company and runs a 100k follower YT channel (that's taken 8 years to grow) that he hasn't monetised. He talks a lot in this video about building his business and some strategies he's implementing, how to balance passion projects with client work, and reflecting on his journey so far. It's good content for anyone just starting their own production company or looking to do that. There's an index available so you can skip around easily, but he's a great communicator so it's a good listen. One of the things I thought was interesting was that he hasn't bought new filming equipment in the last year (although he did spend over $10K on new editing gear!).

  8. This has been a long reported issue with Fuji cameras. At higher ISO's the skin gets waxy and there is a loss of detail. I noticed this heavily on my Fuji XT2, at 1600 iso there was some nasty waxy skin thing going on. Is the problem still relevant on the XT3 shooting F-log? Shot with -4 NR and -4 sharpening (all the way down). Flog H265 24p 4k with the eterna LUT applied. Here is a google drive link for the original file(transcoded to prores 422). https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uy3u_9oZuiNUozLEVB2PTFHlWlKwXMQr?usp=sharing (file name "NR Test XT3") Thoughts?

    Tripod with bowl

I like to do lock off shots mostly. Pans and tilts maybe 10% of the time. What do pans and tilts really show you that you can't say with a well composed shot and/or edited montage, honestly? When shooting with a tripod I enjoy framing, hitting the red button, and taking my hands away from the camera. If anyone else uses this style too, consider Manf. sticks with a "leveling center" included. From there, you can get whatever head you prefer. I got cheap 701 HDV's, which are very gnarly for moves, but they're small and work well enough for me. This sort of set up gives you the option of quick bowl-type-leveling and compact breakdown. It's a "video" tripod that'll rise to 6' that disassembles and breaks down into enough compactness that I've been able to do carry-on with ALL my gear. It's not the most smooth video shooting system --which you COULD easily purchase elsewhere, but the functionality and break-down for excursions are more important to me. I've traveled to over 50 countries with equipment and this is what I ultimately settled on, and was, more or less, content with. (It doesn't have enough mass for stable long lens shots during windy days) If you want to avoid sending gear through checked baggage, it's a solution. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/272854-REG/Manfrotto_555B_555B_Leveling_Center_Column.html/?ap=y&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7OaQ2qKg4AIViMVkCh026QRzEAQYAyABEgIQmfD_BwE&lsft=BI%3A514&smp=Y

  14. Yeah Panasonic's GH line is still one of the most interesting things around in terms of video. We have a bunch of full frame cameras that are a bunch of different flavors of the same thing. I doubt the new Sony will be that different either.

  15. The way you look at it everything is perfect in Canon-land, the way it is, and the way Canon admitted 2 days ago, is far different than reality. Sports photography belongs to Canonikon for the next half a dozen years, certainly, all the rest has changed. In wedding photography, a few years ago it was 95% Canonikon, now Sony has eaten a good chunk of that, and I even know a few people shooting Fuji, something unheard for even 2 years ago. If you go from 95-98% share to something like 65-68% on just a few years, then there is trouble in paradise. Fashion, the same, and the mILC have a bigger share there, for sure. Sony didn't just take some share, it almost has a monopoly with their FS5 and FS7 series. When I have knowledge of at least 30 TV shows in my market, and just 1 is Canon (C300mkII) and I even know a few (I worked in 2) using GH5 cameras, then that is not just "took some share", that is even worst than pro photography that changes happen slowly, this is a disaster, and on a market with huge profit margin. I am not trying to convince you about anything. I have 4 NX cameras, and my favorite tool of all time, besides NX, is the C100mkII, but I can not close my eyes to the writing in the wall. It is just there, with hugh neon lights.

  16. Riiiight, because your comment doesn't come off at all like Sony fanboyism. You might have had a case if you were using an A9 series (rest aren't even weather sealed). But the A6300... better than Canon.. for sports really? Cmon. The joke of the LCD rear display with less than 1M px (not even half of EOS R's resolution) requires that monitor on top. Lack of ergonomics means you need that side handle. That camera has worst RS than EOS R (more than double in FHD), overheats after like 15mn, AF nowhere near DPAF, no touchscreen, no IBIS/IS, weak battery life etc.. Yeah what a pro solution over Canon that camera is ? Better not rain during the game.. meanwhile Super Bowl last year: RIP CANON ?

  17. Fanboyish statement sounds like its from Canon's marketing department. But hmmm what job? I shoot sports (video) from the sidelines at all levels of play Youth, Varsity HS, Club/NCAA, and professional lacrosse. Nearly every camera body they make would be total joke for what I do.. Edit: After watching the Northup video, I agree the EOS R is great "Family/vacation" camera ?

  18. No they Use to do a thing or two right. That is the problem. The 5D mk III was the last FF camera they made that was a real effort. Class leading on the video side. They have lost most of the Pro C market now. They are just sliding down into the shitter as far as I am concerned. They have went from the best you can do mindset, to lets just push the shit out the door mindset. To me they are not the leader of anything anymore. Even the L lenses are mostly crap for the video side. EF-S lenses work better overall. They have become a 1990's company.

  19. As good as the image is on the EOS R, I just don't see how it's a practical camera with that big crop and slow readout, unless you're on a planned shoot where you purposely take the required lenses. I won't take this product line seriously until they remove the crop and also improve the battery life.

  21. If Andrew is right Canon Needs to go out of business. Why the hell did they even bring the EOS-R out? Boy they sure are a goofball company as of late. The whole board of directors must all be 90 years old or better. If you have bought a Canon 6D mk II or an EOS-R you have just been screwed if true.

  22. A reference for anyone looking. C100 MKII 4K upscale filmed at 60fps exported to 24fps in davinchi resolve. EOS Standard Profile. I was quite surprised at how good the footage turned out. Very action cinematic to me. It looks even better when in slowmo.

  25. Thanks for the test. Seems like underexposing helps preserving detail (less compression) but temporal filtering causes some strange "static" noise, fine and flickering pixels (instead of actual detail) and smear when subject or camera is moving slowly - the same happens on the GH4 above ISO 2000 and A73 above ISO 1600 - but both show even more ghosting. Both the X-T3 and Z Cam E2 (which is way worse though) show this issue at every ISO. Still the X-T3 looks like a better cam in low light than the A73 does which is a complete mess in higher ISO due to strong temporal filtering. But honestly, looks way better than the other footage another person on YouTube shot and uploaded (both internally and externally in ProRes) using sharpening and noise reduction at 0 and interframe nr turned on. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sb0MH4soxt-Kqtf0jiYXc4dN0u5U-iFD/view?usp=sharing Overall, I would actually use this camera up to ISO3200 (when slightly underexposed and NR/Sharpening at -4 and interframe NR off). Wondering how HLG looks in different exposures. Expecting more detail even

  26. It's a pity they don't allow more flexibility. I'd suggest that they just include a menu called Don't Go In Here that allows the user to turn everything on and off etc, but there are people that just can't keep their hands to themselves. My dad used to work for a large company managing all the PCs and there was a staff member who would call the Helpdesk about every week or so with some strange problem. At first they tried fixing it but couldn't work out what had happened so they erased it completely and reinstalled everything. Some other problem a week later, same answer. A third problem and they noticed the pattern and replaced his whole computer, another problem a week later. Dad got involved and did some digging on his machine and worked out he spent about an hour a day screwing with random settings in the registry, which is a database deep inside Windows that has probably millions of variables that control all sorts of strange things. The point is that he was changing things that weren't labelled, there was no mention of on the internet, or anything. They tried everything, talking to him about it, his manager got involved, it went for months and they couldn't work out how to stop it happening. It got worse and was taking up hours of IT time every week, he was going around the company badmouthing IT and causing big problems. In the end they had to change the IT policies for the whole business to enable them to lock him out of the program and not be able to screw with things anymore. There were a few other people who worked there that needed that access and they ended up having to change a bunch of things to allow them to continue to do their jobs. He obviously had some kind of mental issue that meant he couldn't stop doing it, and couldn't accept that he was causing his own problems. Imagine if you're Canon or Fuji or Nikon and you give the entire world access to settings where people like this will screw with all of them and then when they don't like how things have turned out will go online and post criticisms relentlessly forever. You might be thinking "it's only sharpening or NR" but think about how much photographers or YouTubers talk about cameras being "sharp" or about ISO performance. It's unfortunate, but I think the only reason that some manufacturers can put real settings on everything is that either that these people can't afford these cameras, or when these people play with them the image will still look good, or that when they screw with things and they look bad and complain the other users are educated enough that either they can see it's user-error or no-one else cares about it.

  27. That's what I actually meant (4k 60p internally - 10bit 4.2.2), thanks for clarifying it for others.

  28. The lenses are so expensive on the Panasonic. Internal 4k 60p or 4k 60p in general is a great feature though. Panasonic will also offer a 12 bit external solution, (unknown if its RAW or not yet) so it could be on par with Nikon in that regard. Having the ability to shoot 10 bit internal is very attractive for me. If I purchased it I'd likely skip the lenses and just adapt manual ones.
    1 point
  29. True, though I am seeing skin detail on my HD screen after zooming in 300% so I imagine it would be more detailed on a 4k screen not less. Maybe its also more jarring if you have raw footage to compare it to. Guess I need to invest in a 4k monitor one of these days. I'll link a google drive test.

  33. How long have you shot with? How many seconds...? LOL Haven't you found a sweet follow focus solution to replace the need of continuous AF? 34. I'd imagine so. There's a thing in the fashion industry (and others too I'd imagine) where to get a job you need to work as an unpaid intern for long periods of time. The fact that you have to work long hours and these offices are in the middle of big and expensive cities means that you can't work a second job to pay rent, so these opportunities are basically only available to people with money. Considering that to make money in film you must do a lot of work up-front as well as make contacts and build your network, if you didn't have pressure to put food on the table it would really make a large difference. Not as much as working in downtown NY 15 hours a day, but some at least.

  35. By the by, one of the obvious observations in photography - is that the many of the most famous photographers in history came from 'independently wealthy' families - meaning they never really needed to work for a living... Off hand, I am thinking of Ansel Adams, Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, Sebastiao Salgardo, Richard Avedon but there are many more. It isnt really surprising I guess because it is far easier to create a body of interesting work if you have no pressure to earn your daily bread and butter through weddings, school pics and other commercial photography. I wonder if the same rule applies in film...

  36. There's some confusion online around HLG and conversions. HLG is actually a delivery format, so if you shoot in HLG and are going to display it as HLG, you just hook it up to a HLG monitor and grade the way you want, no LUTs required HLG isn't the technical term - it's more of a non-specific marketing term, and there's conflicting information online about whether HLG is Rec.2020 or Rec.2100, but if you're looking for conversion LUTs then those are what to look for I did some experiments with my GH5 and I don't believe that HLG on the GH5 is either Rec.2020 or Rec.2100, but in the end I concluded that it's close enough to Rec.2100 that I don't care about the slight differences It's complicated stuff. I tell people that using Resolve is like flying the space shuttle, and to extend that analogy, navigating different colour spaces and gammas is like knowing how to be a pilot. To get to where you want to go you must know how and where to fly and know what controls to adjust to do so. Resolve, HLG capable cameras, and HLG capable TVs are all cheap now and available to the general public, but it's like making the space shuttle cheap and available, being able to afford it doesn't mean you will know how to fly it

This is sort of like me saying I have the winning Lotto numbers, but I will tell you them after the game is over. Shit or get off the pot like my Grandfather used to say. Enough of the silly shit.

  38. Who gives a damn about canon here? The R was just a bad joke, this RiP will be a reheated 6DII with late 2000 sensor tech. It just becomes entertaining at this point to see how they continue screw up. But why would they change? They propose outdated products at premium price and they fly of the shelves. They make good margins and sales with minimal efforts so there is no reasons to stop. Good for them.

  39. I am not really too sure all these company's are holding back. I think there is a physical limitation heat wise on these Hybrid bodies, and 4K 60p 10bit or better just isn't going to happen unless it is in a Cine type body with a heat sink from hell, or a fan, or both. I think all these manufacturers have known about the 30 minute limit coming off in the EU. They can't put out cameras that only go 12 minutes or whatever without taking a Lot of Heat, pun intended. They are just going to have to face the music and say small bodies just are not going to be able to meet the future needs for video. The PK4 and the Z Cam E2 have proved it really can't be done in a goofy A6000 body size.

  40. Practical...? It’s the most practical camera I have owned. Weighs nothing... High res sensor... flippy screen... uses SD cards... Sets up in a breeze. Turn it on and it does it’s thing all day long. No worries at all. As for rolling shutter... unless you constantly shoot with wip pans it’s a non issue. Here is an example of something I frequently use the EOS R for... it sits on my motion controller, acting as the B-cam to my C200. You’ll notice in the image that while we own the follow-focus, we never bother to use manual lenses; preferring to instead use the focus module to control the zoom ring... which works amazingly. We can only afford to do this as the AF on the EOS R is rock solid. So much so, that it makes zero sense to use the focus module to control focus. I call that immensely practical. For reference, there is not another camera outside of the Canon family that we would feel comfortable enough to use in this manner.

  41. Panasonic is definitely handicapping these cameras, likely to protect their higher end stuff(??) or maybe the M43 market. Still its full frame 4k 10 bit 422. No one else is offering that. The cropped 4k 60p is a bummer but its still less of a crop than the XT3 and you'll still be getting the amazing high ISO performance. The 12 bit out is pretty cool too, (might be RAW?) Full Vlog might also mean this camera could have some pretty impressive dynamic range. The limitations and high price definitely make me hesitant though. Last year was pretty crazy in terms of camera releases. I have a feeling things might slow down this year. Still waiting on Sony to play their card.

  42. To add to what @Michi just wrote... after spending some years reading this site, I think the most logical approach for many forum users here is to go and buy a cinema camera and use the right tool for the job.

  43. The Canon 6D Mark II caps out at 1080p / 60 on video. *Surely* Canon wouldn't release an enthusiast camera in 2019 that only recorded 1080p...would they? Although, Canon recently released the M50 and it only does 4K @ 23.97, has terrible rolling shutter, a big crop, and AF doesn't work very well in 4K... I have a bunch of Canon glass and would love for them to introduce a good camera for video. With their recent track record, I can't say that I am optimistic We already have the A7III, Z6, S1, and the others above the EOS R & RP in price and the Sony A6400 / 6500, & Fuji below them in price. It might make sense for Canon to introduce the R & RP cameras, with those features, at those prices in isolation, but there is some pretty stiff competition out there...

  44. No doubt if you are in the Canon system it pays to stay there. And who doesn't like Canon CS. But man there comes a point of how many times can you get screwed and still like it. That is the point. There apparently is Never going to be an end to it. Jesus.
    1 point
  45. I hate to say it but the image quality looks pretty good. Too bad they dropped the ball on AF etc... There’s no reason Panasonic could not have made this camera killer. At any rate, the competition is certainly hotting up!

  46. So Canon is taking the specs of the what most would agree was the weakest camera introduced last year for video and make it even weaker. I argue they should have just lowered the EOS-R to this price and called it a day.

  47. It almost looks like Panasonic is ensuring that once the GH6 is released, professional videographers will finally be able to figure out the advantages of the M43 system over FF.
