  1. I'm excited to share my new travel film I shot over 4 days in Yellowstone in August. This was my first video on GH5. I learned allot on this shoot. I hope you sit back and watch on a decent screen with some good sound and enjoy some CinemaScope nature bliss. Cheers. Filmed on the Panasonic GH5. Filmed in HLG and Cine D profiles. Colored with Film Convert. Anamorphic lens used were the Baby Hypergonar 1.75x, Bolex 8/19 1.5x and 16/32 1.5x Anamorphot. The Rectilux 3FF-s variable diopter and closeup lens. Taking lens used Pentax 300mm DA f4, MeVis 35mm f1.6, Carl Zeiss 100mm f2.8 and Pen F 38mm f1.8 with wide angle attachment in front.

  3. Quite a prescient topic as I have just picked up one of these Skyzone TX5D transmitters. It has an HDMI input and then converts it to analog transmission on 5.8GHz. Your options to view it are then an integrated FPV monitor (or goggles if you are that way inclined) or via a receiver that connects to an android phone. Transmitter is less than £50, a monitor can be had for under £100 or the android adapter is about £30. You also need to budget another £20 for a lipo battery to run it on. The benefit of doing it this way aside from the cost is that it is really low latency. As this stuff literally only turned up a couple of days ago, I haven't had a chance to put it together but I'll post something up here in a few days about it.

Thanks, it's so nice to hear voice of modesty, out of endless verbal judging what is future or what is dead. Actually, it seems that inner peace and modesty are the most important talents to make a gems such these - with NX1. (And it is great to see that Black Pencil still use NX1... last post is just one month old one).

  5. Canon is the only major camera manufacturer that still develops its own sensors in-house. Just about every other camera brand goes to Sony, who have cutting-edge sensor technology. So yes, Canon are behind in sensor tech which explains the recycling of old sensors in their current mirrorless cameras. They have acknowledged the 4K crop limitation and are said to be actively working on it. We’re all hoping the new sensors will appear on the upcoming pro model later this year (1DX2 already being the Canon camera with the least crop & RS in 4K).

  6. I dont know if anyone would seriously hate the eos r if it didnt crop. You get trolls and such in any case, but most people would forgive slightly lower frame rates and bit rates in exchange for reliability and great color, as they have been for years with canon. But the crop is an actual dealbreaker for a lot of people, and moreover it is just so silly. Its not like having poor autofocus, which is still evolving and pushing forward with competing technologies and software. Its a simple concept of having 60% of the sensor taking up dead space when shooting 4k. It would be like if blackmagic put that 5in screen on their camera, but only the middle 3in worked while shooting. Is canon somehow the only major camera manufacturer who has not discovered the technology to make full frame 4k? Its hard to imagine, but the equally perplexing alternative is they slapped thousands of people in the face by witholding it.

I think it's time for a GH6 rumours thread. There were a flurry of rumours in early 2015, including talk of 8K video and people were anticipating potential release dates. The New Camera made this handy-dandy diagram: They also made a couple of predictions about a couple of different possibilities on how it might happen: There's also lots more stuff in there too - http://thenewcamera.com/tag/panasonic-gh6/ We know that The GH5 got 5K video in a firmware update in late 2017, and with all the talk about 8K for the 2020 Olympics, the GH6 might be 8K. The GH5 5K mode also got H265 encoding, which due to its increased efficiency, is probably a requirement for decent 8K video. In May 2018 Personal View leaked this: https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19798/panasonic-gh6-first-rumors Then during the S1 announcements, a Panasonic rep made comments that indicated that video would continue to be lead by their GH line of cameras (I can't find the link) which helped to firm up the idea of a GH6 rather than abandoning MFT for FF, yet at least. What do you predict? What do you want? Do you care?

Wanted to share more GX85 Cine-D samples. It's fun to carry around with the 14-42mm pancake for impromptu video when I'm not using it for photos. Additional coloring was done on top of GHa.

  10. Hey Tito! Thanks This project was the most challenging and a tuff one to estimate. 2 factors that causes it to take so long was for the first time ever I had an SD card fail. I lost my entire first day of footage. I spent the next three months having data recovery attempt to get it back with no luck. The other factor was most of my long shots had dust and specs because it was super run and gun and I was car camping. I looked like Rambo. Soooo I had to buy and learn Mocha Pro to remove spots from footage. Another month gone. My workflow is bananas also. I keep each shot in its native resolution. This is a mix of 8k, 6k and 5k because I was switching between 1.5x and 1.75x 4:3 and 16:9. I finished on a 5k timeline but I can always go back to each clip which is 30 secs or lonnger. There is around 180 shots in this and another 175 shots I did not use or process. Some are reframed and some are completely different shots that I did not use. I learned many valuable lessons on this shot. Make sure you always have a back lens cap on and use an air bower would have saved me over a month of my time

  12. GH5 or S is better for 1.8 crop, significantly better internal codec IMHO and cheaper. Better color science and auto focus from Canon of course.

  13. What is Panasonic holding back from the S1? It's the first FF camera to shoot 10 bit internal and the first to do 4k60. The S1R even does the latter without any crop. Like the GH5 there's a paid upgrade, this time to full VLog instead of VLog-L. I guess this was my question from earlier in the thread. What does RF bring that EF didn't?

On the subject of Sandisk 95mb/s, BMD have this to say: Please note that we have discovered an issue with the newer revision of the Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDXC 95 MB/s cards that begin with the product prefix SDSDXXG. These cards do not work with the following products: 1. Pocket Cinema Camera 2. Micro Cinema Camera 3. Video Assist 4. Video Assist 4K We believe that these new cards have the V30 rating on them. Currently, only Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDXC 95 MB/s cards that begin with the product prefix SDSDXP are compatible. https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=83050

I'd like Panasonic to bring the swagger back for 2019!! Imagine what a G90 might be like? Would be finally getting 10bit internal in a low end camera? I'm inclined to think "yes", seeing as the likes of cheap ish cameras such as the Fuji X-T3 and BMPCC4K have it. So perhaps the G90 will have 4K 30fps internal (or at least external!), plus FHD 120fps 8bit (seeing as slow motion is also becoming very commonplace as well), and finally maybe just one more random video feature as a treat for us (v-log? waveforms? timecode?). If you could buy a space rocket or a fire truck for the same price as a Canon M50 then I bet their sales would go through the roof.

Both those seem to have a bit of a 3d thing going to me which is down to the subject having DOF covering the toy and the background being empty for quite a distance behind. There are other issues that make me not like either of those lenses wide open (from that anyway). Stopped down and they are both ok (and both fast enough and long enough to easily separate the subject from the background). I have had many lenses from 50 to 58 and they all had their for and against and all could make "3D" type images easily but most were not great wide open. The four best I had were/are the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 (ended my desire for any other normal lens really), Canon FD 50 1.2 L (loved that lens and regret selling it) Both those use aspheric elements- then the Pentax 50 1.2 (I used it so much for so many years it literally fell to bits even though it was a solidly made lens) and the Nikon 50 1.8 AF non D made in Japan (the best cheapie). The worst but one of the most interesting was an ancient Zeiss Jenna Biotar 58 f2 that had 18 blades and was sharp but very low contrast. Other people would have preferred the old Biotar to the others I think- IE it is all subjective. I had an old 55 Tak and didn't think it was all that good (I threw it away from memory when it got stuck on some bellows).

  26. I'm just intentional dreamer (I have yet to find better way to oppose to so often nightmarish surrounding) Not strange at all, my problem with gimbals and glidecams is bulkiness, although there are the must for some narrow usage. I firmly believe that most important and successful element (and advantage ) for indie artistic direction is possibility to more completely melt into scene and vision, to forget technical burden and calculation. With high budget we can achieve everything but at the massive budget expense and expense of endless negotiation. That's, I think, a question of specific balance between spontaneity and preparing. Of course, it's not everyone cup of tea - I'm just trying to provide and reinforce what I feel as my inner preference (or "quality"): as mush as possible fluid stream of unrestricted imagination, letting to it to find best forms of its adaptation. (And there's a secondary gain: stronger and refreshing feeling of existence of some other center of gravity-being than boring reason in myself... but of course, it is some kind of mystical philosophy :)

  27. Thats what I thought, but I saw someone on the Kinefinity forum who used the speed booster with a mamiya 645 lens. This is cool, as I know many canon lenses cover far more than the 35mm standard sensor. I have been testing the fuji gfx and almost all my lenses cover that sensor.

  28. I agree completely. IBIS is something that people who don't need it don't understand the value in. That's like everything in a sense, we don't appreciate what we don't use or don't need. For me, IBIS provides a nice level of camera movement. If you hand-hold a camera it's ok for action scenes, but too jerky for anything else and just screams "8mm home video". Something like a shoulder rig gives a nice level of motion, the extra size eliminates the hand-shake but keeps the human movement, especially when paired with IS in a lens. More stable than that are the glide cams which are very smooth, but @KnightsFan is right in saying they're still intuitive and can still have that human movement. Gimbals are very difficult to control to let that human movement through, but I think part of the difficulty with them is that they let basically no changes to where the camera is pointing but still let through all of the changes in where the camera is positioned, and the combination looks odd. You're absolutely right that it allows something new. We used to have glide cams or shoulder-rigs to give that level of movement, we also used to have rigs that were very fast to setup and use which allowed spontaneity and life to blossom in front of the camera easily, and we also used to have small setups that you could take into places that don't allow professional filming. IBIS brings these three together in a way that we never had before, and for me that's what creates new creative possibilities. You can use the size and speed to allow filming in situations where there wouldn't have been time, or to allow more movement that would have been very difficult before. Shooting calligraphy is a beautiful way of saying it, another might be to have a dance between the subject and the camera. I am attempting to make videos of my family (who don't re-do things and I'm not going to ask them to) in places where there is no professional shooting allowed and I'm carrying around the camera all day, and I want the end results to be as beautiful as I can make them, which hand-shake completely destroys IMHO. IBIS is what allows me to shoot in places and not get told off or asked to leave. I suspect they will get better, and may incorporate additional features that make this easier in the future. For example, if there was a little camera looking at you scanning your face and you could steer the direction of the camera by angling your head, like those separate controllers do when you tilt or rotate them now. This would be very intuitive because I know that when I'm watching something and I want the camera to look somewhere else at something off-screen I move my head by instinct as if trying to get the camera to move.

Screw what is over-used or under-used or what the cool kids are wearing, if it fits the story then use it It's like that saying about continuity "if someone notices continuity issues, then your film is crap". Shoot the whole film in slow-motion in golden hour and into the sun with flares all over the place and it will be fine as long as all that stuff fits the story. It's when it doesn't fit that people start complaining. I used to think that the 3D thing was just a DOF thing, but I'm beginning to understand. Last night I did a bunch of reading and found this comparison: https://www.thephotoforum.com/threads/warning-lrg-lens-shootout-contax-zeiss-planar-50mm-f-1-4-t-vs-pentax-smc-takumar-55mm-f-1-8.394768/ Tell me that the 5mm difference in focal length (and therefore aperture) is responsible for the differences in those shots. I suspect it's the contrast, which likely comes from the coatings. I would have expected the Takumar to be sharper than the CZ, but not so. Maybe I just let my mind wander with Takumar sounding like Tak, as in "tack sharp"

  31. I do think that alone is a major reason many are hating on it. I am too poor these days to afford anything but if I wanted a 4k camera, what Canon camera currently could I use this lens on to shoot 4k at 17mm FF angle of view? I can use other brands FF or even use sub FF cameras with focal reducers from lots of makers but from Canon? It will be some time before Canon has a full complement of RF lenses and even then many EF mount lenses will work just fine with adapters.
    1 point
  32. i completely agree. i thought that was what was taking so long – getting these new bodies to work natively with ef lenses ~as well as~ their new fancy ones to be fair, im a huge critic of design i own an Apple Pencil™ which needs a 1" white plastic adapter in order to be able to charge, an adapter which you store nowhere. likewise with the cap that you have to take off to do so, you lose that too
    1 point
  33. That's the funny thing. EF lenses were universal, so even if Canon didn't make great bodies, people still bought EF lenses. In the past 4 years, the vast majority of lenses that I've used--mine, friends', borrowed--have been EF. I've used them on Samsung, Blackmagic, Fuji, Panasonic, Sony, and even on a handful of Canon bodies. Despite never owning a Canon camera, I saw the EF format as a good investment. RF won't have that status. How many people think that RF is superior, compared to a mirrorless EF camera with that vari-ND adapter built in? They could have updated the lens communication protocol to allow for that extra ring on the lens, while maintaining EF compatibility.

  34. Here's what we use in ours and how, so it's all I can attest to but I can attest that they work perfectly. Everything we produce is for TV or web. We shoot everything in UHD and edit and output in 1080P for distribution. When the first camera arrived we stuck this SanDisk card in that we had several of from our old Pockets - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1282965-REG/sandisk_sdsdxxg_064g_gn4in_extremepro_sdhc_64gb.html?sts=pi We've shot with them exclusively for a few months - terrabytes worth of footage - without issue. You'll get 11 minutes of ProRes HQ UHD 24P per card for about $20 each. Now go and have fun

  35. I was trying to defend you on the emoji thing man. I think the S1 may offer better IBIS but that is yet to be seen. You are right on adapters as the S1 mount is new right now. The Nikon is a heck of a deal at under $2000. For whatever reason the 8 bit codec seems to be pretty strong. I was tempted to buy one myself though I decided against it. If you combine it with an Atomos getting that prores RAW you have a really interesting tool.

  36. That's true you can be much more in tune with your camera when using IBIS. I love your knowledge of film history though most of it goes right over my head ?

  38. I'm fully aware of this. I just used this comparison to point out that in my experience 5D2, even though it's FF, performs worse than APS-C camera that can be bought for almost half the Canon's price.

  39. Nice work. Ahhh...the down vote you gave my reply to you last week regarding where to get L mount adapters for your lenses makes sense now. I was beginning to think it was because I'd only found them for you but not actually bought you them as well

  40. My sentiments, exactly. I was surprised at how well it took some pretty extensive grading---pretty robust, and not even a hint of banding. And I got it now, the down arrow is not saying you are making an additional comment "below"--it's a disapproval. That's just freaking confusing. I've never seen that before. How about "thumb's up" or "thumbs down?" or just a choice of emojis?? "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

Probably I'm wrong, but every rumor about higher capable camera actually affects me in a strange way - to ask myself: am I really overgrew my existing tool regarding opportunities to use it, or am I even made usage of its values to full potential, for private creativeness or for real business/competitive market? Sadly, I must admit that at the moment it seems that answer is - no. (If just somewhere exists rumors about more opportunities for me to escape in camera shooting realm...)

  42. I went down a several-hundred-dollar dead end before switching to Rode. I'm sure there are alternatives that are better, but considering the Rode VMP range has been battle-tested by the vloggers the world over, and the VMP+ update basically addressed every issue that vloggers had, Rode seems like the safe choice. Plus with 19 hour battery life, if you can charge it daily then you can turn it on when you wake up and still have it available all day without having to carry extra batteries. It even turns on and off automatically, so apart from charging it I basically don't even think about it. I couldn't have bought any other mic and had that certainty.

I think Panasonic would sell even better with a phase detect system, but Sony would also sell better with more flip screen cameras. The lack of attention paid to vloggers is odd to me. Apparently 1 in every 4 kids wants to be a youtuber now. Seems like a big market. I guess Canon pays attention to that market. Hopefully AI will go places fast. That way Canon can no longer lead the AF market with their exclusive auto focus system. Z cam is doing interesting things with AI as well.

  44. I picked up 5D Mark II last week. Great ergonomics. That's the only thing I truly liked, haha. I became so accustomed to electronic viewfinder that I can't stand OVF anymore. It makes precise manual focusing almost impossible. Took some photos, recorded some 12 bit raw video (thanks, Magic Lantern!). If you're on base ISO (200), then everything is quite all right and there is some latitude to play with in post. However, after ISO 1600 things start to fall apart pretty easily. I wouldn't mind grain, but.. A lot of colorful sensor noise and banding. Dynamic range isn't the best, either. It just feels like a 10-years old tech, unfortunately. I got much, much better results with a6000 which costs around 250-300$ used. So, yeah, I wouldn't honestly recommend it.
    1 point
  45. Another thing to consider is that filters apply the effect to the actual light entering the lens. Post effects are added to the heavily compressed data you end up with in your edit codec. Even the most efficient codecs are massively compressed when you also consider chroma subsampling, debayer, etc. The physical filters have a considerably greater amount of 'data' to manipulate.
