Hole (First short, B&W, 8 min)
heart0less and 2 others reacted to Ingerson for a topic
Well, it’s been 8 months since I completed this and almost a year since I promised @mercer to post it once completed I don’t really know what to say about this, it’s my first short and I wanted to try this medium after trying music, photography, drawing/painting and all sorts of writing in order to figure out myself and my depression. It took me months to complete due to my mental state and lack of energy and I intended to post this sooner, but life can be a little too much sometimes. Or very often in my case. Even though it was the hardest creative thing I’ve done in my life, (despite having a background or experience in most of the separate artforms that make up a film) I was really lost in the entire process and I developed love/hate relationship to it. I wanted to quit all the time when I wrote it, when prepping, when shooting and during the long, motivational drainage that is editing. But I guess that’s also where the love was born. No matter all the mistakes I made, I could somehow save it and make a decent first short thanks to the editing by re-arranging the pieces I had. Throw away most of it, stretching what was left of it, slowing or speeding up some of it, playing some of it in reverse. Dubbing in new sound (needed, cause most of it was unusable. Note to self: Don’t forget sound! I’ve tried to make another short since, but haven’t completed the shoot. I don’t know if I’ll finish that one, it’s just a silly comedy I made with my then girlfriend, now fiancée on my phone (This one was shot on the DVX200 before anyone asks, cameras are important on this forum apperantly, hehe) because she wanted me to make something less depressing, but I guess I’m just a gloomy guy, all my new ideas are based on my different malfunctions. Hopefully I’ll work up enough energy to make another, I really want to. Anyway, enough talking. I hope you’ll give this a go and give me some pointers, but go easy on me, okay? Now, pick you poison: https://vimeo.com/272702923 https://youtu.be/rsXdjH4I5YA3 points -
@Anaconda_ I prefer the bigger bodies, but not when they offer less recording options for a lot more money. You can build up a smaller camera, but you can not shrink a big one! What P4K, EZ and the hybrids brought to the table this last year, is truly exrraordinary. FS, C and the such cameras they have to up their game for the amount of money they ask for! For the business I do (I am mostly a sound man in the industry), I considered a 5000€ budget for my new camera. I am in the market for one since 2018. What are my options? Should I go to 7 and 8 and 9.000, or just go under that? The logical thing to do is go under and spend the rest of the money on more lenses!3 points

When Will Camera Companies Make HDR Video Like This?

Whys that? ("Meteor man", "blade" were also black superheroes...) Best film should not have anything to do by the margin of profits. Black panther was barely watchable, if you think black panther is one of the best 5 films of 2018, you either only have watched 5 movies or you have quostionable film taste.3 points

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
thebrothersthre3 and one other reacted to Anaconda_ for a topic
It's all so dependant on your individual needs though. If I I'm handholding all day and had these choices: or I would 100% go for the bigger bodies. The servo zoom alone on the FSx can really be great in a doc style shoot, and I find putting the actual camera on my shoulder is always going to be steadier than using a rails shoulder system. Then there's the ergonomics of the bigger cameras when they're on your shoulder. A proper grip with exposure controls etc. which the smallers just don't have, so either the actual camera is a way off your shoulder, or you arm is in a very uncomfortable position. Either opens up the possibilty for less stable operation, since the pivot is on your shoulder. With that said, I do have daily access to an UM4.6k and FS5, yet 98% of the time go with my P4k. My day to day shoot is set up on a tripod, so size is almost irrelevant. The main difference here is I can fit more lenses in the bag, to have more choices on location. Anyway, the point is, you can't rule out certain body styles for the whole industry because your needs don't require such a big body.2 points -
the Viltrox EF-M1 is one such thing. it's a smart adapter without the focal reducer. As per your solution, I tried to remove the focal reducer optic from my Viltrox EF-M2 once and I could not focus my 18-35 at all. The minimum focus distance seems to be pushed to really far away. I have not figured out the reason why.2 points

I just don't understand what people expect anymore. The size and weight of a z6 and a Ninja 5 is smaller that using one of those entry level dslr and a small flash. That is less than the average Japanase/chinese tourist with his small Nikon/canon camera walking around taking photos in some random tourist location. The C200 is much bigger and not full frame, to have a full frame video camera with 10 bit just 5 month ago was the Canon C300 a much bigger shoulder only camera and now you have to add a codex recorder to put RAW. The fact is that your type of (small, unassuming, versatile, total lightweight package, easy to mount on gimbal, etc) does not need more than 8 bit shooting, 10 bit and even prores is an overkill to shoot those low level production. Just six month ago, absolutely no one was expecting any manufacturer (I even include the likes of blackmagic)was going to release a full frame camera with RAW. In fact everyone was begging for 10 bit for at least the last 2-5 years. Just for a measure, this is the Nikon d3200, the smallest Nikon dslr compared to the z6-z7. In pure volume the Z6 is smaller (much thinner) and I advise anyone to look at the Nikon D3000 series camera in a showroom or people using it. This thing is tiny to the point of being uncomfortable if you have average man hand.2 points

Giving the BMPCC4K the same look as the BMPCC and BMMCC
graphicnatured and one other reacted to kye for a topic
In my searches for vintage lenses to make my GH5 more organic looking I came upon the Contax Zeiss lenses, and then yesterday I found this video... It's basically the dream team of organic classic aesthetic - Contax Zeiss primes, BMPCC, Metabones SB, Tiffen Variable ND. Personally I think one of the lenses is a bit soft for my tastes, but overall it isn't bad. [Edit: actually I think the softness is a combination of missing focus and stopping down too much, so not the lenses]. I've seen better BMPCC videos (lots of talented people used that camera) but overall it should be positively dripping with the look we're chasing. Thoughts?2 points -
My understanding is that most log profiles end up effectively underexposing the sensor to give more dynamic range to the highlights, hence why the AF isn't as good when shooting in Log on the Z6. Saying that Nikon are working on improving the AF so we may see some improvements here, and that flat profile is also pretty nice for most situations. As far as filmic image, motion cadence and all round I really want an Alexa in a tiny hybrid body that costs $2000 mojo, I think it comes down to how much processing the image receives in camera. IMO the most beautiful image in terms both colour and motion cadence in an indie camera comes from the digital bolex. There is no fancy downscaling, no inter frame compression, and zero noise reduction or sharpening done in camera, just a pure image processing pipeline (and the global shutter helps). So hopefully the raw output on the Z6 will have minimal processing/sharpening etc and if so should be very very nice. I'm looking forward to the 1080p raw output just as much as the 4K.2 points

I too am impressed with the Z6. Ticks off a lot of boxes in a very small and light form factor. I'm a former Canon, Sony and Panasonic user. I also have an XT3 which I love and recently got the Z6. The Z6 is blowing me away across the board. Really, the only thing it's lacking is 4k60p and a robust native lens lineup (for now). The IBIS is better than I expected, 120fps is excellent, weather sealed, awesome low light capability, touch interface, good battery life and eye-AF and ProRes Raw on the way! Very happy so far.2 points

OK, a bit quick and dirty but here we are. Slightly complicated by the only non-reducing EF>MFT adapter that I have on hand being a Fotodiox Lens Throttle which always has a certain amount of ND even when set to clear which, coupled with the light advantages of the focal reducers, means a bit of an exposure modification for that one. No big deal really as its only there for reference anyway. I shot this so view that you would have plenty of white wall and with focus set on the wine bottles so you also get some detail into the edge of the frame with white surrounding it and some potentially glowable stuff on the fridge. Obviously the Metabones 0.71x reduction to 0.75x of the Aputure gives a wider FOV but its also got a very slight sharpness edge. The RAW dng files are here for you https://mega.nz/#!x35lUQYI!P8oS55N-z2xvfjzesoSEEsjcIPIt4e-lKGYpUdVO7jsBM4K Focal Reducers.zip2 points

Although this year we have a fellow Greek in the Oscars, for me they are dead since the LALA land disaster. If you witnessed this mega cringe where they had the whole cast on stage thinking they had won and then they took them all down...i dont want to watch the oscars again. The second problem is the PO overdrive, where they put films like "WE WUZ KANGS" aka Black panther contesting for best pictures, and all the PO bs where people get nominated because "me too" or because they are minority.2 points

IMO because it is above understandable for mortal, uninitiated mind. Obviously you have yet to learn most profound true - cinematic image is just that coming from Canon, and although it may have some subsidiary following attributes as "fat" or "natural", all of that is actually misguiding attempt to express something inexpressible that belongs only to especially gifted perception. Personally, after struggling to understand and carefully reading perpetual states - in almost every thread - frome most passionate gurus of that question, I have found logical peace in such formulation: where the specs stops begin cinematic image, exclusive companion of uber-specs Canon.1 point

Nikon Z6 menu setting
tomsemiterrific reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Its more a case of "Same as it ever was" rather than it being a specific omission on the Z cameras as its exactly the same in my other Nikon cameras like the D500 etc. so I'm guessing they don't get enough push back on it from users to have changed it. Whether that changes with Z cameras being a lot more video centric is open to debate I suppose.1 point -
I'm on a diet so I'm not stockpiling anything at the moment ! The current situation is that with 41 days left we absolutely still don't know what is going to happen so we can't decide on anything. All we know for certain is that the cliff edge is there in 41 days time and the UK will be careering over it but all that remains to be seen is how hard we hit the ground. The worst case scenario is the 'no deal' where we leave without any form of continuity or transition arrangement with the EU and even the best case scenario of where we do have some form of deal will be infinitely worse than the current deal that we have with them. Because the Prime Minister can't get her deal through, due in part to it being pretty poor but also in part because of the lunatics in her own party who want to capitalise on the chaos of just crashing out, then the default position in law is no deal. Its really hard to express just how bad that it is. But when your own government is issuing statements that they are stockpiling body bags and other essential medicines and can't rule out deaths and having to instigate martial law when you ARE NOT IN AN ACTUAL FUCKING WAR then you know its not exactly what people voted for. Although, bizarrely, under some mass delusion there are many, many people claiming that no deal is what they actually voted for. Whatever happens, things just will never be the same again and the fact is that we have sleep walked into this because for 20+ years our national newspapers have been conditioning people to be anti EU by splashing front page headlines of bare faced lies about EU laws. Here is a list of them https://tompride.wordpress.com/2017/12/05/see-20-years-of-fake-news-about-eu-by-uk-press-vote-for-your-favourite-here/ When you just pick a few out at random such as "Church bells silenced by fear of EU law", "EU forcing cows to wear nappies", "EU to ban zipper trousers" or "English Channel to be renamed Anglo French Pond" you'd be forgiven for thinking it was some kind of satire or published by conspiracy theory obsessed fringe publications. But they're real. All of them. And all from our national newspapers. Because no one actually got a grip of them and said "now come on lads, this is absolute shite and well you know it" it just carried on and carried on and when it goes unchallenged it must be true, right ? Which then brings us on to the anti-immigration agenda they were able to keep promoting. That is just ONE national tabloid. But if you think they were acting in isolation, you'd be mistaken because they were all at it, with varying degrees of success in trying to mask the inherent racism in the message. The official Leave campaign thought nothing of pushing an anti-immigration message based around a single country. You can fill in the blanks yourself about why they chose that particular country. The official Leave campaign has been fined by the Electoral Commission for illegal spending and reported to the Police for criminal charges which you would imagine would've been enough for the result of the referendum to be declared void yet for some unknown reason the Police have had the file for several months and not pursued it. Weird, eh? I just can't see how, as a country, you can come back from this sort of insidious shit and the divisions its created for many, many years. Currently, I can't foresee a reason for me to stick around on the Island to wait for that to happen.1 point

Anything cheaper than the FS5 for 4k120 RAW?
Mako Sports reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
Yes the FS700 is the cheapest. There is a used one on eBay right now for $1200. You have to add in the cost of an external recorder with both cameras, the odyssey 7Q does 4k RAW I believe.1 point -
Exactly, I just did nearly two week non stop shoot around my tropical island for a reportage on a Victoria Secret model coffee book shoot. That shoot was intense in very harsh tropical summer climate with a lot of rainfall, heat and humidity (shooting a lot around the water). At first I was a bit embarrassed to shoot on such a small camera and rigged it a little, after not even half day, I was shooting mostly hand held and with my 7 inch Ninja. This shoot was going fast and I did not want to interfere at all as most of the team was coming from US and with the weather had a very tight schedule. After watching the fotage at night I slowly moved to only the internal shooting and was really impresed by the internal 120 fps 1080p footage. Where I en-counted problem with the footage was banding in the blue sky, I watched some tutorial and got some great result with qualifier and ofx debanding in Davinci resolve. Perhaps for a Nikon shooter this is extraordinary and would have been normal for other MILC shooters. But for me it was extraordinary, I got some amazing tracking and slowmo handheld footage (I was starting to have to restrict myself with the slowmo because it was so gorgeous), that Nikon quality with all the features of the Z6 video capabilities like Ibis, auto focus, handling ergonomic, build quality is mind boggling in such a small package. Now if I was first camera and I had a more compact Ninja V than my 7 inch one. I would have perhaps done more 10 bit shooting and use an external recorder. But even then, with mostly the 4k and 120 fps codec bitrate, I am stunned by the quality. The last thing I don't understand is the supposed non cinematic image of the camera. I guess some people might understand that its not shooting in crappy light that will make their camera look cinematic or not, perhaps they should look at the meaning of the word. Because for me, my images are coming out great. There is not one people from the US team (photographer working for vogue etc) thought the image were crap.1 point

Yes, it is its own little wireless drive so you can be reading from it while the camera writes to it. When you use the app, it copies the files to the iphone/ipad so you should only need one device as you will be likely editing one file as the next one comes in. If you use LumaFusiom to edit with on the iphone it should also be able to take care of directly transferring the files to cut out a step of using the Toshiba app.1 point

I think its fractionally sharper but nothing to write home about. The only problem with dumb adapters with EF lenses is that they are a bit too dumb in the sense you can't control the aperture or power the IS. I'm not sure if there actually is any smart adapters from EF to MFT that aren't also focal reducers? The solution would be to buy the very cheapest smart focal reducer one and take the glass out of it.1 point

Well I live partially in Germany and partially in Switzerland and electronics are quite a bit cheaper in the latter (in contrast to literally everything else you could buy). Stores I have personally good experiences with in Germany but which aren’t necessarily the cheapest are the following. Canon EOS RP and Fuji X-T30 announced - a Grand Canyon sized gap in 4K technology

Reading through this, I am just amazed of how many unbelievable excuses people make to justify Canon limitations. Things that are an industry standard for years are thrown out of the window, and people still trying to reason through this. My 4 year APS-C mirrorless have no crop whatsoever, with 73min continues video recording and no overheating, and when the tiny NX500 was out in 2015, the special press and forums "destroyed" the camera because of its 4K crop..now abysmsl crop is some kind of feature...1 point

At the risk of sounding like a shill for Toshiba again, the simple solution for this (and many other things!) is to use one of their FlashAir SD cards in the camera. Their app then runs on an internet connected smart phone or tablet and allows you to browse and copy the images/video off the card and share them straight onto your social media accounts. Crucially, as it operates independently of the camera, this can be done in the background without effecting the operation of it. So you can carry on shooting whilst someone else is operating the app to view, select and copy from the SD card. With the files then on the smartphone/tablet they can of course then be edited if required before transmission to social media. If you setup a public social media account(s) for the event then guests can simply link or copy the posts to their own account. Alternatively, the card can also be setup to ftp directly to a cloud account where guests can access the videos or locally to a wirelessly accessible hard drive.1 point

You might not need it, someone else might not need it right now, but it is handy to have it there, the full range of options: 8bit, 10bit, raw! Plus it is Nikon, it is always going to be more than just the spec sheet1 point

Worst airport security I've been through with camera equipment was recent trip to India when we flew domestic internally. The Indian culture has a lot of the average person basically doing whatever the hell they like, pushing and shoving, trying to skip the lines or walk around like no-one else exists, and the authority figures having to constantly bark commands at people to pay attention and behave, so the officials are used to ordering people around without really applying judgement or listening to anyone, and you have to be quite assertive in general. Airports are a hotbed of this kind of thing. I lined up, did the normal thing of taking out my laptop but leaving camera gear in the bag, and lined up. I was then informed that I was in the line for the women to be scanned (metal detectors) and I had to go all-the-way-over-there to the mens line. I left my bag on the conveyor as it had already been put into several trays, I'd already become separated from it, and the rest of my group were women and were in the line next to the baggage scanner. When I went through the mens line and came back it looked like my bag had exploded. My wife was there guarding my gear, but they'd made my wife take the camera bag insert out of my backpack, and every item out of the insert. So there piled up in the collection area surrounded by a crowd of other travellers was my GH5, three lenses, Rode VMP, USB charger, cables, spare batteries, phone, wallet, keys, and sunglasses. Some items were on the actual counter, not in a tray or anything. The lenses looked like they'd been rolling around. I was furious but held it in because an airport is the last place you want to make a scene about anything these days. I've never been to another airport where I've ever had to even take the camera bag insert out of my backpack. Had I been travelling alone who knows what would have walked off by itself. Not sure what I should have done differently TBH.1 point

The weak link definitely seems to be how to get things from the camera to the internet. It's stunning that camera makers haven't made any real attempts to fix this issue, especially considering that the fixed-slow-prime/awful-low-light/low-DR/low-MP camera on the iPhone has become the most popular camera on the planet because of convenience and constant connection to the internet, and that it overtook the DSLR despite Apple starting off as a dinky computer company at the time that the big photography companies were already ruling the world in photography.1 point

Interesting. So we've essentially got two sensor technologies here. The Panasonic / Fujifilm one here that has an organic layer that acts as an ND, enables global shutter, and can make the well-capacity of each pixel far larger which will increase DR. This sensor still has a sequential readout like traditional sensors. Panasonic has been able to build one, and says that 8K60 is possible. Then there's the Sony one which has one ADC per pixel, enabling different ISO per pixel to increase DR, and providing a global shutter as the ADC is done in parallel. This doesn't have a built-in ND capability so in very bright situations an ND would still be required. This design adds lots of complexity and Sony has only managed to build a very low resolution one so far. Is that right? I wonder what the DR of the Panasonic one would be. They claim a light-well capacity of 10X previous designs, so keeping the same overall noise levels equal that should mean an additional ~3 stops of DR. That method seems to be the better one, at least in the short-term as the extra DR of the Sony isn't worth the lack of ND, plus the fact that the Sony sensor still isn't 1080p yet ???1 point

Setup for Slow motion booth (Editing + Sharing to Social Media)?
lissa reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
The video from Matthew Staffords wedding looks like it was shot on a Red. I was at an event where they did this with an iPhone taking with a simple setup of a small fluorescent key/fill/hair light. They shot stills, boomerangs and recorded goofy slow mo stuff, sending it to an iPad through an app (don't know what the app was called, but guests were able to email the video to themselves), and broadcast with an Apple tv mirroring the iPad. In good light the iPhone 120fps looks good, and its fine for social. If you didn't have the app, someone could just shoot the video on a phone and airdrop it to an iPad or MacBook for a quick edit, and then it can be emailed or airdropped to other iPhones. I've attached a shot of the iPad that was used for review and emailing images/videos. Wish I could help with specifics, but a combo of iphone/ipad would be my solution. A ILC presents a lot of headaches in terms of file transfer, file size, edit/render speed and so on. I have the iPhone XS and XS Max (one is supplied by a company I work for, I'm not a two phone dink by choice) and the iPad Pro. I think it would be easy to pull off what you're looking for with my little setup with two people - a shooter and a editor to make quick clips and send them to guests. Five seconds of slow-mo video of someone dancing or throwing crap in the air could easily be edited in iMovie and emailed in less than a minute. Everything you need including lights and stands can probably be carried in one large bag/case. The days of the DSLR based photo booth are numbered, there's no reason to lug all that around for small instant prints or social when phones and a few lights will get you virtually identical quality. And you can probably charge a lot for the service. Hmmmm... Chris1 point -

Just about all you need is https://geizhals.eu/ and https://www.google.com/shopping?hl=DE . Here some more pointers: Some of my cameras (G80, GH5) were actually purchased through the UK (CVP/UKDigital; one lens through https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/progadgets-kcs ), because of the EUR/GBP and Panasonic UK promotions (with EEA eligibility) making it more attractive. But I have bought locally in Vienna, AT. E.g. a-s-elektro.at which were always ones to seemingly have Panasonics in stock earlier than others (LX100, GX80 from there). Or digitalstore.at which is a high-end store which sold me my original BMPCC when that one summer deal took us by surprise (475,- EUR if I recall correctly). And sobotka.at that sold me my DC-G9. Bought lenses at edigital.at and eglobalcentral.at . Really, in the end there's not really one particular go-to place. In this day and age I just go with the ones that have stuff 'in stock' the quickest, have some special deals going on or just come in at the lowest price by looking at what pops up when I search for products using the first two links found at the top of this comment. Indeed for audio Thomann.de , Bax-shop.nl and Muziker.at are pretty much up there. Nefal.tv is pretty legit regarding high-end video I suppose. A little over 2 years ago I hadn't even set foot on American soil, but I'm there quite frequently now, so I might pick up a few things locally when I'm there in the future. Of course, B&H and Adorama do ship internationally. They had the Lumix 25mm f/1.7 for sale once, going at $99. Even with import tax and all that it would've been a bargain, but I got lucky and it flew under the radar. Then there's shops from Asia that offer VAT free guarantee when shipping to certain countries (read the conditions). You'll always be able to get just about anything through Amazon, eBay and AliExpress too now these days.1 point
