JVC GYLS300 In 2019

Can't believe you've missed the subliminal advertising a few of us routinely do for it in a lot threads Headlines are Super35 sensor MFT Mount Built in ND 4K 4K60p to external recorder Twin card slots XLR on removeable handle so can be compact Variable Scale Mapping which lets you use any lens coverage type (Super 16,MFT,APS-C) and it automatically scales it to full screen. Prime Zoom function (operated from the rocker switch) which lets you zoom with a prime lens as though it was a zoom. Live internet streaming. Remote control with live view from a web browser so can be used from any phone, tablet or computer without an app. Hardware switches for white balance memories etc. Long battery life. Abysmal, truly horrible, atrocious EVF Decent run through here : https://youtu.be/IEhW4lQdFps4 points -
I was contracted to do a small Look Book for a popular “Influencer” son’s YouTube channel. It was filmed with a JVC-GYLS300 and a 7 Artisans 25mm lens. It was very difficult pulling focus with this rambunctious child moving about lol, but I got some decent shots.3 points

Hey Panasonic: Super 35 + M43 mount = winner
Mako Sports and 2 others reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Have you used or looked into the JVC LS300? I'm actually surprised you never reviewed it, as it is a mighty camera for its price. The form factor, internal NDs, SDI out, professional XLR inputs, VSM (a feature I figured you'd love with all the vintage lens benefits), prime zoom, the zoom rocker, the streaming capabilities, and the like make such a wonderful package. And the combination of Super 35 and M43 mounts really worked out nicely together! Whether it's JVC or Panasonic, I'd love, love, love another camera in the spirit (and price!) of the LS300!3 points -

Just got a Nikon 85mm 1.8 pre ai I am really impressed. This may be my favorite lens I've ever used next to the Minolta 35mm 1.8. Contrast and sharpness wide open is remarkable. I think it also just renders images nicely, can't put my finger on it. from the XT3 eterna jpegs, also used a lens turbo focal reducer3 points -

The LS300 is such a wonderful camera. I truly hope that JVC releases a successor, or that Panasonic takes the formula themselves if JVC doesn't. The VSM feature alone makes this camera absolutely incredible. Are there any other cameras that have it? I can't think of any off the top of my head. My biggest complaint, outside of build quality (which I understand, it's how they made it so affordable), is the low light and the auto focus. The auto focus isn't a deal breaker because I mostly use manual lenses with my LS300 but the low light isn't really much better than the M43 censors that are out. I was expecting better low light from a Super 35 sensor.3 points -
Yes I’m super aware that the Gyls300 has broadcast ready codecs, but the distribution network I’m using for the project I’m working on, requires certain requisites. The similarities of these cameras are of course the form factor, built in ND’s, manual buttons for camera settings, ease of use, very usable mic pre’s, image quality, crappy monitor lol and good battery life! The differences are the codecs, lens mounts, VSM only on the Gyls300 and the type of storage for internal 4k DCI. For the Panasonic you need a very fast SD card to gain that option. The MFT offers full coverage of the super 35 sensor and is the perfect mount to attach almost any type of lenses! If need be, you can also easily attach a microscope to it! Then use the VSM feature to adjust the image to prevent vignetting!3 points

Thanks! I really thought I was not going to capture any decent footage. The young man was just too fast. Lol. Considering that I also fly a Panasonic Eva1 and a few other cameras, I just always seem to grab the Gyls300! I enjoy using it because it’s simple to use. Some of the things that make me grab it before the others is the battery life and the codec, which allows me to use humble SD cards. These cards don’t have to be the fastest, yet I’m allowed to shoot DCI 4k! I also enjoy the VSM (variable scan mapping) feature, which essentially turns my primes into zooms, with no loss of quality. One of the features that I never worried about , but is now a de facto necessity for whatever camera I ever consider getting and that is the built in ND filter! For this shoot I opted to film in HD 60p instead of the internal slow mo, to limit the crop and the loss of a stop. As I mentioned earlier I also own various cameras and the only reason I bought the Panasonic Eva1 is because it reminds me of the JVC, but with a more robust codec, which I intend to utilize only because the medium for which I’m releasing the project on requires it. If not for that fact, I would be using the Gyls300 all day! Thanks again!3 points -

I struggled for ages with criteria that sound like they might be similar to yours. In the end it came down to the Sony A7III, which has good AF and fast but expensive FF lenses, or the GH5 and 10-bit files with the reliability, lack of overheating issues etc, and pro features it offers but limited AF. I ended up deciding that going to manual focus worked for me and my style of film-making, and because the IBIS is so great you can adapt old lenses and still get great hand-held footage, so I now have the GH5 and a cheap ebay vintage lens collection that is so large that I hide it from my wife.3 points -
The default setting for MFT lenses is 85% of the sensor so it zooms in by 15% to match the coverage. However, you can override that because with a number of lenses you can actually get to 95-97% so your FOV with a wide angle lens is actually a bit wider than it would be on an MFT camera. The flip side is that you could also set it to say 75% if you have an MFT lens that has less than stellar performance at the edges.2 points

Outside from the 10bit output (which doesn't really make sense to buy a GH4 for in 2019, as once you add in the cost of an external recorder, you could have just purchased a GH5 instead), the 96fps slow motion (but at a big hit to image quality! I know some GH4 owners never went over 60fps because of this, which is the same the G85 can do), and being able to use the YAGH accessory (ugh! Which nobody liked), what specific advanced features/benefits does the GH4 have over the G85? Panasonics are fine. It is Sony you have to watch out for! (even their third generation full frame cameras still will overheat!! I've experienced this myself on set)2 points

The GH5 is a great option. Using tap to focus works really well unless you're in terrible conditions. The auto focus performance really depends on which settings you use. I find it quite usable in one area and pinpoint AF. Also coming from the GH3 you'll have the focus assist features with the GH5 that make manual focus very easy. You can rent one for fairly cheap these days, maybe try it out? You might be surprised!2 points -

I've had my finger hovering over the buy button so many times with a FS700 over the last 18 months or so. Although, now that I'm buying a Cedar DNS2 next week, I'll be broke for a long time after thus no more big purchases for a while. Hopefully! I'll give it a 50/50 chance as to if a Samurai V happens or if an AtomX SDI module happens. I'm hoping for a Samurai V, so we can use the Timecode AtomX module with it. Would fix up the biggest thing I don't like about the FS700, the lack of timecode input1 point -
Yes, it acts as an APS-C camera would so you get full coverage with an APS-C lens and a crop of a full frame one but obviously you can also use a Speedbooster on the full frame lens to get a lot of that crop back as well as an increase in speed. One aspect that seldom gets mentioned is that if you want you can actually use an APS-C lens on a Speedbooster to make it faster and then use the VSM to crop back into it to counteract the vignetting. So, for example, I have a Tamron 16-300mm all purpose travel zoom that is a bit slow at f3.5-f5.6 but on a Speedbooster it becomes a far healthier f2.8-f4 and I set the VSM to 85% to take out the vignetting. Ditto for the Sigma ART 18-35mm f1.8 it becomes f1.2 and the VSM at 85% maintains its field of view as though it were on an APS-C camera. With a little extra reach as well of course courtesy of the additional zoom function.1 point

We had exhaustively discussed this before the GH5 and EVA releases. It is an amazing idea that unfortunately Panasonic didn't exercise. The LS300 sold a lot more than people think. It is not in the forums or the front pages of e-magazines, but I have seen a lot in the wild and the pro AV shop that sell them here have told me that it is the best selling camera of the last few years after the FS5. I know a lot of people that match one with the GH cameras (for a more dependable video design and features) and is a very common sight in weddings and live events coverage. It is start getting old (low light performance is kind of week), but a mkII could be the sweet spot for the under 5000$€£ segment.1 point

I understand. I think the colors out of the GH5 have improved greatly since the GH3. That was one of the major things we saw first with the GH4 and later with the GH5, where it got even better, and GH5s which is the best color I've seen out of these Panasonic cameras. I usually do little, if any, tweaking with the footage I get unless I'm going for a specific look or absolutely need to. Even though it's a 2 year old camera it's not completely fair to hold that against it. It still does stuff that other cameras don't, and there's still no camera in its price range that matches all of its features. The Panasonic GH5 was so ahead that it took 2 years for everyone else to catch up, and even so they haven't completely. Plus they're still releasing firmware updates to improve performance1 point -

You can record 10 bit 422 out on the XT30, so it has future upgrade potential. Log doesn't grade as well in 8 bit. Fuji log isn't too bad though better then 8 bit sony S-log or Panasonic 8 bit V-log. However you also can record in Eterna, which isn't log but has pretty high dynamic range. Getting a cheap speedbooster plus some cheap vintage lenses gives you some pretty cool results on the Fuji too. The GH5 with vlog and HLG definitely has a different flavor, the lessened crop and IBIS make it a really unique camera. I do agree the tech is getting older. I wish the GH5S had IBIS, it really would be hard to beat.1 point -

Whats your budget including lenses? I'd still say the Z6 is the best option out there all around. Keep in mind longer lenses like he 45-175 on M43 are like 90-350. On full frame you don't get that long range. So M43 has that benefit. Lenses are also smaller. Imagine the size of a 90-350 on full frame. Consider that as well. Do you mind hauling around a bigger system for doc work? The GH5 is hard to beat for run and gun, great IBIS and great lens options. Not great in low light, though with fast lenses it can be. The 25mm .95 is a great option, though for wider stuff you have to pay a lot.1 point -
Wow. In a sense, that's it; an 'external Olpf'. Now, to simply get it mounted on the sensor..1 point

Yes, that was the point I was making about the zoom rocker switch. You can assign the focus control to it so that you don't have to touch the lens. Yes, it has focus assist. The user manual is here for your reference http://pro.jvc.com/pro/attributes/4k/manual/GY-LS300EN.pdf1 point

Not internal but can power lens IS. Autofocus is always a difficult question to answer for any camera as it is dependent upon a lot of factors, not least the lens itself. Its fair to say that the LS300 doesn't have anywhere near the AF options that other cameras have but, again, it comes down to how good is good enough for what you want to use it for and I don't think anyone else could answer that other than yourself. Suffice to say though, that "fantastic AF" is not the first thing that springs to mind when I think about the LS300. One thing it does have in its favour is that you can map the focus controller to the zoom rockers which makes it very smooth to pull focus manually with AF lenses. This video shows it doing AF with a lens with IS.1 point

I can confirm that turning OLED Color on/off creates a visible difference when shooting a colorchecker. Attached a photo of each. Looks like a bit higher saturation overall, but it is also not linearly increased for each color. Rather, blues seem to be a bit higher in saturation with OLED color on, and the magenta trace seems to pull true to magenta, while the magenta trace pulls slightly to the blue side of magenta with OLED color off. Also, my wallpaper, which I consider to be in the white family but containing some color looks much more yellow/warmer with OLED color on. However, the white squares on the color checker are almost identical between on and off, so white balance isn't really affected directly. oled off.bmp oled on.bmp1 point
