  1. Well, here we are then. The 3C app is now officially available from the Play store for Android devices. 3C enables you to remotely control and monitor the primary functions of your Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K from an Android device using Bluetooth LE. Using 3C, you have access to the following camera functionality. Aperture ISO Shutter Angle White Balance Record Focus & Zoom (with compatible lenses) With 3C you can also store your own custom setting sets for exposure, focus and zoom parameters for later recall as well as automate transitions between stored focus points*. For ease of use, 3C uses a single screen touch interface to control all of this functionality and avoid the need for you to have to activate any sub-menus to change settings. 3C has a scalable user interface to enable you to remove focus and zoom controls from the screen should you not require them and wish to run the app on a small screen Android device. In addition, 3C can also be used as an interface hub to enable control of the camera from compatible Bluetooth gamepads. You can purchase 3C from the Play store here http://tinyurl.com/y5eyujeu You can read the PDF user guide here User Guide For 3C v1.1 by CDA-TEK Ltd .pdf You can use gamepads from iPega and 8Bitdo that support keyboard mode and examples of these are https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KA6OR7Q (iPega) and https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B017PAX036 (8Bitdo). 3C will also support wireless live viewing from the camera in a future update with additional hardware.

Used the Nikon 50mm 1.8 pancake version. This is the non E version multi coated. I am really happy with it, quite sharp wide open. Also used the Tokina 17mm 3.4, which I also really love. Its super wide but doesn't look funky at least not to me. The one I got ended up being in really good shape(super surprised). I also dropped the 50mm down a wooden staircase right after I unwrapped it from the package lol. Seems to be fine though. The seller said it had fungus on the rear element, tho I can't see any signs of it. On another note I've never shot with Fuji monochrome, its really beautiful.

  9. There are Blackmagic facebook groups too, not sure if you've posted there yet, and of course BMCuser. Lots of places across the interweb to spread the message. Gotta get that blogger review hype like Sony with an Iceland junket, or maybe just get a bunch of them drunk. DPR seems to like Kickstarters that marry digital/analog tech, perhaps to can fuze a control tablet into an old tube amp. Good luck!. Chris

  14. Zach, it’s Sunday, almost Monday, are you writing something? If you saw my art practice, ANYONE who sees it, would agree, love it or hate it, that it required a TON of work on my part. Clearly decades of development. Sitting on your ass playing video games or whatever the fuck does not make you an artist... no exceptions!!! Sorry not sorry!!!

  15. Great response everyone, interesting to see what people do with the same clip @KnightsFan @heart0less the setup for a colour grading suite is very particular, from memory: Colour calibrated display (of course!) No daylight - completely artificial lighting Neutral coloured walls Nothing bright behind the operator (so no reflections in monitor) nothing next to the monitor - you have to be able to see the walls around the monitor A light behind the monitor creating a kind of halo around the monitor Wait for the lights to stabilise before grading The light behind the monitor combined with the neutral coloured wall gives you a constant grey reference when grading so your eyes don't adjust to your grade. You spend thousands on this setup, then hours and hours grading properly, then the client goes and looks at the result on their grandmothers 15 year old TV and goes ballistic on the phone to you that you've screwed up the grade and you have to educate them that every display is different and there's nothing you can do about it, but somehow it was still worth the money to grade it professionally anyway. I just compared Resolve to the exported JPG in Preview (Mac) to Safari to Chrome and Resolve had darker black levels, Preview and Safari matched, and Chrome had the lightest blacks, so was furthest from Resolve. Of course, all of this is system, monitor and colour profile dependent. Basically, it's a nightmare, and welcome to the world of colour grading. Your computer should be smart enough to have separate colour profiles for each monitor, so I'm not sure your logic is correct? Regardless, I get the impression that basically the pros calibrate their reference monitor and then just expect that everything else will look different and just deal with it. Interesting side-note - Resolve is designed to work with the BM output devices and they include their own colour management and calibration functionality for that setup. One of the reasons they don't have the best UI for grading on your system monitor is that they say you can't properly guarantee you can calibrate it because the OS gets in the way etc, and they have absolute control over their devices in a way that they don't have over the system monitor. There may be a bit of "buy more of our products" but it's an interesting thing.

  16. Fair enough. Just as an FYI though, the powerbanks are just varying amounts of cells so you would have to really try hard to come to any harm if you followed the same simple insulation practice that the manufacturer uses to the actual metal outer case itself. I modded one like that for my nephew to use with his A6500 and he seems to be doing OK with it.

  19. Unfortunately the camera doesn't support that but if they change it in the firmware then I'd be happy to include it. Any form of still capture would be useful as far as I'm concerned because I don't know about anyone else but I find the shutter release for the stills grab to be recessed way too far to use effectively without inducing movement.

Maybe it is "old" (from last year...) but it has HDMI 2.0, DCI P3 and even HDR 10 if you need it. I Don't know any Samsung PC monitor that is aimed at pro video editing.

  21. It started off as a project because BM didn't do an Android one themselves but I think it has probably expanded a lot in terms of functionality over the official (free) one to be of use to iOS users as well so its a possibility. My feeling as well really was that because it doesn't need anything particularly powerful to run it on then buying something like this £40 phone would be a better route anyway than 'wasting' an expensive iOS device running it https://www.amazon.co.uk/SIM-Free-Unlocked-Smartphones-,MTK6580-ShaQx/dp/B07KT9KM8Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1551731135

  22. I would definitely get this if I had Android, any chance you're planning on porting it for us fruit users? Also, I assumed my camera had a busted Bluetooth chip as I could never get it to connect to my phone or iPad. Turns out, it doesn't show up in the settings and you need an app to connect through. Figured I'd post it here so others in the same position can get their connections connecting.

  23. Topic update: I've received Anamorphot 40 compact today. Really love the construction and short normal-near focusing ring. Works great with my Sony 28-70 kit lens as follows: in super35 mode full coverage over whole zoom range, so let's say 42 to 105 mm (ff equivalent). In full-frame mode without vignetting same lens works in the range starting from approx. 38mm to 70mm. Therefore it becomes clear that 40mm pancakes (Pentax, Canon) are the best and widest adapting lenses for that combo. Flares are blue but pretty decent and not so 'screaming' of anamorphic all over screen. SLR's Rangefinder for example has very blue flares. With my kit 28-70 lens I have AF-C and image stabilization (lens costs 150 USD) and really don't need to get expensive Sony/Zeiss FE 55 1.8 right now as in any case I would have to stop it down to same values as shooting wide open with kit lens. I'm also happy as I can spend that money for the gimbal Also with that 28-70 kit lens with maximum zoom at 70mm in Super35 mode I get roughly 105mm ff equivalent and with NEAR position on Anamorphot 40 minimal focus distance is a bit less than 40mm (~1.5"). So I don't really need a close-up diopters (although I already ordered a set of non-achromatic ones, single lens). So far, that's the most compact anamorphic setup I've ever dreamed of and I'm happy with it.

The 3200 model does not support DCI P3 which is a shame for this price and the HDMI is only 1.4 verson = 30Hz. This one is nice: https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-32UD99-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor

  26. I've got the BenQ PV270. It's great for a home color grading setup. Something to note, Blackmagic products (I have the Decklink Mini Monitor 4K) see that it isn't a 4K monitor and reduce resolution to HD, regardless of your settings.

  29. I have one the XF100-400mm from my (mis)adventure in using the X-T2 for work. I can only comment for using it for stills and I didn't have any complaints about its sharpness or its AF tracking (the Ronaldo goal is part of a 10 shot burst where it nailed all of them) or the OIS but for my use case the slow aperture was a bit of a killer, especially at the long end and especially on a crop sensor camera. Not just low light performance (though that was a problem for floodlit games even in a Category 4 stadium like the Bernabeu here) but the subject separation just isn't there. The TC works well enough optically on it but, again, making an already slow lens slower was a problem for what I was using it for.

  31. Yeah, that lens is bananas in good light for $100 or so. Also just got the toy-like 15-45mm which is amazing at 15mm and will hold me off buying the 16-55mm for a good while. May not need it at all if my 50mm Super Takumar and 55mm Minolta Rokkor are sharp enough on this sensor. Got the 23mm f2 for WR and 7artisans 35mm f1.2 for lowlight. The latter flares badly but the 23 has CA open.

  34. I've been using the A9 + MC11 + Canon 600mm II f/4 lens for birding. Great combo. Video isn't too bad on the A9 considering they don't give you SLOG and 60p 4k. I would never consider the EOS R for anything sports or wildlife. Canon is about two years behind Sony.

  35. That is true, but I would have to actually make a calibration profile for the TV. I started to do so last week, but after DisplayCAL took 5 hours to analyze the TV, I found I'd made a mistake, and I haven't had a need for accurate color that was worth 5 more hours. The real problem with color calibration on consumer devices is that for whatever reason, there is no consistent way to calibrate the entire computer display without an expensive LUT box. Graphics cards should just have a LUT box built into them, instead of the mish-mash of ICM profiles, VCGTs, and application-specific LUTs that we currently have. It's a ridiculous headache even with color managed software, let alone browsers.

  38. I think it is a very good lens (Fujinon XF10-24 mm F4 R OIS) on my XT-3 and especially for my purposes. Very sharp images, and it works great with video. I will post some footage and stills with it when I can. For doing my lectures for my online courses in my recording studio, it is a better focal length than the 18 - 55 mm kit lens, and for outdoor photography and video work, especially landscapes, it is great. And for other situations where you would need that range. It was a great move to get this lens. It has some weight to it, but that's not a problem. I also really like the Fujinon XF55-200 mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS lens. I will be trying it out for wildlife photography and video. I hope that I can get close enough with the telephoto lens. Will see. May have to get the longer telephoto at some point. Fujinon XF100-400 mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR, Black. Any thoughts about using a teleconverter, pro and con? Also, I really like to do macro photography and video, so I am probably going to have to get the FUJIFILM XF 80 mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens. I am also saving up for these two lenses. Fujinon MKX18-55 mm T2.9 Lens and Fujinon MKX50-135 mm T2.9 Lens.

  39. Sort of... but in my case it's mainly a mis-calibrated monitor. I'm using a fairly nice 4k TV as my monitor at the moment, whereas usually I use a nice (but very old) monitor, which is what my computer is calibrated for. So I'm 100% sure the colors on this TV aren't accurate, and I've got a calibrated LUT for previewing in Resolve so really it's anyone's guess what I'm seeing at this point.

  40. It's the Canon lenses keeping the cameras afloat, that's for sure. Looking at the Panasonic S1, the lens situation is a mess. No AF-C on the Sigma adapter for Canon. No phase-detect AF on the sensor. No affordable primes from Panasonic at launch and the 50mm F1.4 is far too large. Looking at the Canon EOS RP, very small and affordable 35mm F1.8 with IS and macro ability. EF adapter that works properly. Cutting edge expensive stuff like the 50 1.2 and 28-70 2.0 for the pros. There's no question the S1 is a better camera for video though, as long as you don't mind waiting for Sigma's L mount lenses or using manual focus. Then again you'll be using MF in 4K on the RP any way!

  41. Do you guys can see the same colors after uploading to this page? I had to bump up the saturation almost +50% to get the same results after uploading the graded image here. So it's completly oversaturated in resolve, and looks ok here right now:

We'll see.. I made myself a promise that after migrating to M4/3 from Sony's FF, I won't let gear obsess my mind any more and I'll try to keep things simple. 3 / 4 lenses, one cheap speedbooster and that's it, nothing more. Overall, it's just a hobby. So far, I didn't break the promise, so, please, don't tempt me! ? It is! IBIS works wonders. Using 4:3 4K Photo Mode to record anamorphic video is great. It has its limitations (only 30fps, no way to change it to 24, so I just slow it down in post; no CineD; and no HDMI output), but it doesn't bother me that much. And it cost me 1/3 of what GH5 would.

  45. This is intriguing. I've never worked with GH5 footage so this was pretty interesting to try out. Somewhat challenging compared to BM footage. Anyway, here's my take: Not a fancy grade/process, I wanted to see what it looked like if I'd just put it through the usual routine I use on my corporate/commercial work. Most work was on balancing the noise/NR on various tones.

Wow, I'd love that. Though, I'm afraid I'll have to stick to ~55 / 58 mm, because most likely a speedboosted 50 mm will vignette when coupled with an anamorphic adapter in front. Great minds think alike. ? Who knows, maybe my copy wasn't that good? Not being able to focus it past 1 m was the crucial factor in letting it go. I will! My best bet right now is getting a Minolta MD 58/1.4 MC II and adapting it to EF, as @mercer suggested. I have a quite inventive engineer friend with a 3D printer, so it won't prove to be a big problem, I think. Thanks, everyone!

  47. I think what he’s saying is that you can answer your own question by going out and making films. And if you’re desperate enough to make them, you could always set your camera on a tripod and film yourself as an actor. I’m sure your local church or library has some kind of bulletin board where you can post a casting notice. Build your films around what you have... for instance... don’t write an urban film if you live in a rural community. Make One Minute films that you can put up on Instagram. To sound a little cliche... if there’s a will, there’s a way. However, it’s up to you and nobody on this site can help you build people skills. But if you are unabashedly yourself, then what more do you need? Zach, I know how much you want to make films. I remember you posting similar threads 4 or 5 years ago. And I know about priorities in life. And I know making films is insanely difficult. But ask yourself... what can you do this week or today with a half hour of time that will prepare you to make that movie during your spring break? I’m glad to hear you’re still using your t2i and FD lenses. I ended up buying a modified FD 50mm 1.4 that I adore on my 5D3. So with that being said, go back and look at what Kendy Ty did with his t2i and a single lens and a single character.

  48. Hey Ian, I think you have inspired me for my next documentary. I will try to recreate paintings of places in real life using anamorphic. What I am especially interested in is the grading. I can imagine there are some important workflow steps for you, if you graded in davinci resolve. I really love the look and some tips to get to this "painting like" look would be greatly appreciated. This will also be my first project in Davinci, so I think I will try to get everything as good as I can in camera, exposure and white balance, so that I can edit without any grading in adobe and then grade the finally used, picture locked clips. I will try to use the Color management tools and tutorials in davinci as well. I also will try to use HLG combined with Cinelike D. And am going to use kowa for b&h with minolta lenses. 28mm, 50mm, 135mm, 70-210 mm. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Great movies. The same thing with the spots actually happened to me in india. Luckily I was doing hyperlapses so I could easily correct the spots in lightroom. Lesson learned, I always have the blower and a cloth with me now. Cheers, Julius

  49. I totally agree - just make stuff. I am only aware of two ways to really succeed. Get absolutely great at it or get to know a bunch of people and be great to work with. Considering you're not physically around other people the second one is more challenging, but can still be done (youtibers collab all the time without meeting each other). In terms of the first one, getting great, you have to find your inner voice. The shortcut to doing this is to make lots and lots and lots of films. I know that's not a shortcut (ha ha) but the real shortcut is that they don't have to be long, they only have to be long enough. The person who makes a one minute film every week will learn truck-loads more than the person that makes a 52 minute film each year. I'm assuming you're young (because of college and no car) so assuming that's the case you'll also still be trying to figure out who you are. I'm over 40 and I figured out who I thought I was, but am now trying to get rid of some of those ideas, so I'm still at it. Finding yourself and your voice just takes work, but the upside is that it only takes work. If you make 100 short films then it's almost impossible not to learn a lot about yourself. Another shortcut is to try things that make you uncomfortable and you've never tried. Film yourself, make a musical, make a historical reenactment, make a documentary, make a mockumentary, make a fake news report, make a stop-go animation, make a film with planning and no editing, make a film with no planning and only editing, make a silent film, make a film with no music, make a film with only music, make a B&W film, make a film in hyper colour, make a film about a colour, make a film about someone you know, make a film about someone you don't know, make a film about you trying to make a film and failing, make a film about you making a film and succeeding, make a tutorial, make an abstract film about a lost sock, make a film about what it's like to be you, make a film about who you would have been if you had been someone else, make films for other people, make a film that you will never show to anyone else and have a premier with only you and then delete it afterwards, make a film for money, make a film about the people you care about and give it to them as a gift........... Learning is accidentally doing things that are great often enough to work out how to do them on purpose.
