Finally 10-bit Video on a Smartphone?
webrunner5 and 2 others reacted to stephen for a topic
Cinema 4K is fully supported and working on Samsung Galaxy S10+. Camera 2 API checker application shows full support which was kind of a problem with previous Galaxies. High bit rate and flat profiles are available trough Cinema 4K and other applications. Quality of the video is quite good IMHO. Filmic Pro checker reports everything is supported even log profile, including 1080p@240FPS and Cinematographer Kit with 4K@30 FPS with log profile, the only exception being 4K@60p and maybe Log v2 profile which as far as I understand is only working on some iPhone models (Apple A12 CPU required). Keep in mind that in Europe Samsung Galaxy 10/10+ smartphones come with Exynos 9820 CPU, which according to Filmic Pro they can hack to support better their application. The version with Qualcomm CPU doesn't offer this support. At least that was the case with Galaxy S9. https://filmicpro.helpscoutdocs.com/article/41-samsung-s9-and-s9-filmic-pro-v6-compatibility-guide Optical stabilization is quite good. Basically this is the second best smartphone to buy for video after iPhone XS and XS Max.3 points -

Audio: voice over recording
IronFilm and one other reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
I often record dialog for video games and sometimes voiceovers for film projects. I have a corner of my room lined on a couple sides with thick, wool sleeping bags (really dense and heavy). I record with an AKG CK93 running into a Zoom F4 used as a USB audio interface, usually with Reaper as the software. I monitor with MDR-7506's. It sounds great. It's extremely budget-efficient as all of the components are things that I use on set. Well within 3 figures if you look for used equipment. - You could switch out the mic for a cheaper cardioid (or omni, if you have to), but stay away from shotguns indoors. - The Zoom F4 can be swapped for a cheaper H6. - You can use Audacity to record for free--though I highly recommend Reaper if you do any audio post work at all. It's phenomenal! - You may want a pop filter. I haven't gotten one yet. I would definitely get ambient sound to fill the silence if there is no other audio playing. You can just get ambient sound from the room where you are doing the VO. It will probably just be faint hiss, but will remove that "jarring" factor of silence. If you go with laboratory sounds, you could record them in stereo. That way the mono VO will stand out against the ambient sounds better.2 points -

I've been trying to find people to partner with to make films for a long time... You CAN do it alone.. and I made 6 films that way, hoping it would help me meet people to work with. It did not. It is a little bit of a dead end to make films alone forever. There are mediums where you can actually work alone - novels, comic books, and animation are all on par with film, or better in some ways. Film requires the most resources. Novels are the hardest to find an audience for. I might only be a cartoonist now, and not a filmmaker. Cartooning takes the most practice and time (sort of). And still no audience, but I can finally make my stuff. I do think there's an issue right now where people are not trying to partner with amateurs. A director who might go somewhere and an actor who might go somewhere, if they can communicate, should spend all their time together. But the amount of time both are just saying "no" back and forth is crazy. This is part of the reason that the "don't work for free" trend bugs the shit out of me. Mildly successful filmmakers are all just super popular - they have a little posse who worship them, they can raise stupid amounts on kickstarter, and they don't let anyone else in. So, I hope this was helpful and tragic.1 point

I find that using the pre and then working as if I had shot in V-log works very well when using HLG. I was somewhat forced into this workflow when I bought the Ninja V because of the whole video levels thingy making v-log impossible to use if you want a reliable preview on the monitor. I find HLG more or less as good anyway though, so doesn't really matter much to me. Some examples of using HLG with GhA:1 point

Managed to get a Rode AI-1 kit to play with. After reading the recommendations for a USB mic (which makes a lot of sense) I looked around and liked the look of it especially since I can use the mic with its XLR (plus adapter) on the P4k too if required. Might also get an XLR lav to use with the AI USB. Thanks for comments.1 point -
JVC GYLS300 In 2019
newfoundmass reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Those of you who follow me on Twitter (all one of you ) may have seen me referring to developing a controller for the LS300 and other JVC cameras. One thing that bugs me when recording externally with it it still having to use the fold out LCD display to see the current settings, which isn't ideally ergonomically but also its pretty difficult to see. So here in all its taped up glory is my first mini-product for the LS300 which is a small wireless status display which shows current settings and can be mounted on a tripod handle, a gimbal handle, a rig or on the monitor itself. And has a small switch in it tor remote start/stop recording.1 point -

Yes, of course you can use rcm. I was just following the previews posts and my point was about the correct way to apply the lut. You can use REC.2100 HLG as an input in rcm.1 point -
Selling FS5 to get a BMPCC4K?
webrunner5 reacted to jgharding for a topic
Yeah why not? The FS5 colour isn't up to much and I find the whole thing looks a bit sterile. You can stick the pocket 4K in a bag and go shooting wherever. Obviously that bag will also need forty-five batteries in it1 point -
i have very specific size requirements, which is why i was interested in these particular ones from england. and the fact they were 2nd hand which should have made for a good deal. God save the queen and all, but im thinking it will be awhile before i buy from england again.1 point

Thanks! Yeah, I'll have to remake it for screen grabs, but it's all in Premiere with Lumetri, just noodling sliders. I don't like overly stylised footage, just try to make it look a bit thicker than real life, if that makes sense? I don't know if it's good practice or not, but in the curves, I also like to cut off the highs and lows, but then adjust exactly where and how it cuts off depending on the clip. It does make the blacks more dark grey though, so be careful. (this is a really quick example, probably too extreme for actually using his curve)1 point

Pros who run recording studios experiment heavily with microphone placement in relation to the person's mouth and the sweet spot is normally to one side and with some vertical adjustment too, definitely not on-axis! They say that the different elements of the persons voice are projected differently and so by moving the mic around your finding the optimum blend of enhancing the pleasant tones and minimising the others. They say that it makes so much difference that if you don't do it then there's no point being picky about microphone choice either. And if you have the mic off-axis then you may not need a pop filter. I recorded the VO for my 3-hour short film challenge with the iPhone headset and no filter and it was fine. Also, the closer you get to the persons mouth the less the room ambience will be audible because you're lowering the gain to compensate.1 point

Yep, its down to what the OP wants to do with it and how often so I'm only throwing it up as the compromise as it seemed to me like the requirement was for an FS5 form factor and features with a more cinematic look (like we can ever define that on here ) and RAW hence the Odyssey. Which would be the Ursa Mini Pro but then, as you say, everything else gets bigger around it. The obvious answer is to buy both but I'm very liberal with other people's money.1 point

I second the USB condenser mic idea. I have used a Blue Yeti USB Microphone and it worked great as you could record in an office space with out much concern for how the room was treated. It would sound better in a treated room, but it was fine on a mic stand with front of the mic about 6"-8" away from the talent with the mic in cardioid pattern. The said I have need tried the Samson and it has more features so after watching the Sweetwater video it seems like an excellent choice as well.1 point

I recommend buying an old BMPCC for a few dollars and learn shooting and coloring. I've had GH5 for over two years, and I bought an old BMPCC and BMMCC six months ago and that was the best decision I ever made, color and DR is excellent ! it will do much more work but it's worth it.1 point

Here's a fun fact that connects Stranger On The Shore and lens tests... Gene Cernan included the Acker Bilk version of it on a cassette tape that he took to listen to on a work trip in 1969. When he went on a similar work trip three years later he left his camera at his destination when he returned home because he wanted to see what effect solar cosmic radiation would have on the lens but he expressed regrets about it later because in the end no co-workers ever went back to pick it up for him. Its a pity really as it was quite a decent lens, although I'm sure we could find a Samyang that would match its performance quite closely even without the radiation damage.1 point

If you get a zoom, you can also use it as a usb audio interface to recording into some software. For example, you could record straight into your video timeline, and remove any editing into the clips, just record where you want the VO to be. There are cheaper USB interfaces, but I use a Zoom H6, it comes in a nice package with 2 built in, but detachable mics that work well for voice over. Which keeps the price down. It give you quality recording in the field and back at base, while also not having to worry about cables etc. you also have 6 channels if you wanted to use it for say podcasts, or recording a band on location (which I do a lot) @IronFilm can probably also share some tips and suggestions.1 point

Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
Towd reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
Panasonic has a long reputation now of being a camera for video, since the GH2 days. Fuji kind of just jumped into the game with the XT3. It just doesn't have the following Canon, Sony and Panasonic have yet. You can't go wrong with either camera man. Pretty much the Panasonic will win in terms of having no record limit and IBIS. Fuji wins in terms of ISO performance, auto focus, color, resolution, and higher frame rates(better quality higher frame rates). It also comes down to if you have a preference towards M43 or APSC(maybe you have a lot of m43 lenses or simply like the versatility of them).1 point -

AMD Radeon VII or dual NVIDIA quatro P4000
Mark Romero 2 reacted to Deadcode for a topic
P4000 = GTX 1070 2x GTX 1070 = 1x Radeon VII It is cheaper to buy another nvidia card, the performance will be almost the same. But it's highly depends on card support, right now i dont think Radeon VII has full resolve support. Unfortunetaly neither of these options will give you 1080 24 fps rendering while using Temporal NR (Better) with 5 frames averaging. You will get around 20-22 fps1 point -
Totally agree, and to take this one step further, I've discovered that in life people tend to project an image of who they want to be rather than who they are. People who project confidence are typically very insecure, people who project wealth tend to be spending all their money on showing off and are broke, those who are showing off how happy they are (eg, instagram) are typically miserable. I saw a documentary on what life is like for most billionaires and it's pretty awful actually - they can't trust anyone because people are after their money, they have these huge houses but are constantly renovating them to try and one-up their other billionaire friends, and spend most of their time driving fancy cars and drinking expensive champagne wishing they had some real friends. So @kaylee, when you're looking at friends who are married and having kids and feeling that you're missing something, your friends are being torn apart by trying to have careers as well as families, pay their mortgages, not strangle their kids after the 4th sleepless night with the baby crying and the toddler drawing all over the good couch with their favourite lipstick that isn't made anymore, and wishing they could just live in a small town with their dog and get to have a bit of glitz and glam of the film world. I'm out here in the suburbs surrounded by lots of broken people who are now single parents because their relationships failed and when their kids phone gets hacked and their nudes are posted to other kids and they're getting bullied and coming home in tears and don't know WTF to do. Never compare your insides with someone elses outsides.1 point

Finally 10-bit Video on a Smartphone?

Nice! About Apple... They had 10 bit support in ios 11, I could transfer 10 bit h265 from a fuji xt3 with the apple sd card reader at usb 3 speeds to the ipad. And I could edit in lumafusion in ios 12 all we get is a red error x on top if the file and it won't transfer. And with no way to go back to ios 11, we are stuck at 8 bit files. I hope apple will allow this in a future ios update. And pressure from samsung for 10 bit will hopefull help that1 point
