I found this video online as I was researching Samyang/Rokinon lenses. According to the description, it was shot on an FS7 and the Samyang 24mm 1.5 cinema lens. So obviously this look or quality isn’t all about the lens but I think it’s pretty obvious that the 24mm holds its own.

  3. I watched that video and he has some valid concerns and solid praising. Having said that, he is both right and wrong. He's correct in that to get the very best out of this camera, you need to utilize an external monitor to unleash the 10-bit 422 Apple ProRes. Then again, he's a cinematographer and for that line of work, he NEEDS that 10-bit 422 color space for proper color grading. However, he's also wrong, as for the average user, vlogger, or youtube content creator; an 8-bit standard color profile straight out of body image is MORE than enough. Especially for those who need to crank out videos fast. Odds are, if one is a serious hybrid shooter, you likely already own an external monitor. If for nothing else, my eyes strain looking at the back panel LCD. Using a 5" or larger monitor makes it easier on the eyes and allows for MORE video tools; better focus peaking, better zebras, better waveforms, and offers scopes, 1:1 and 2:1 zooming tools (while recording), offer multiple aspect ratio framing, viewing MULTIPLE audio channels simultaneously, and allows you to add external audio and ultimately bypass the camera's preamps (which often can be far less than clean.)

  4. I did! I would like them to add white balance and focal length info if possible. On this clip WB was set to auto but if it is set to Kelvin it shows just "K" and not the actual value. I sent them a request.

I'm not sure I'm going to get that used Samyang 135mm tomorrow after all. After discovering two, admittedly pretty old, 135mm lenses that I forgot that I had in an old camera bag I realise that I may have a slight addiction problem with 135mm lenses. So much so that I am going to have to do a World Cup playoff tournament next week to eliminate at least half of them before I can bring another one home !

  6. @xzobinx I am sure that you know this already but, the 12V port on the camera is designed to take 12V-20V. The battery outputs 8.4V-6V. I am surprised that the camera even turns on with only 8V plugged into the 12V port. I suggest that you get a 12V output battery sled like this one: https://amzn.to/2Fp0I4u I have 3 and they work fine for me. I also use dtap straight from a v-mount battery to the 12V port and it works great. The camera lasts basically all day with one big v-mount battery. If you run a cord straight from the battery, I recommend that you use a dummy battery. The camera is designed to use lower voltages from the battery port. If you use a dummy battery, you will also lose the ability to hot swap your battery during a long shoot. I have 15-20 of those batteries and they work great. I have had only had one of them die over the past 2 or three years of regular use. I have the batteries numbered, but I don't keep track of when I buy them, so I have no idea how long the batteries lasted before dying. IIRC, I think that Tom Antos mentioned killing some of his monitors that provide power to the camera because of the heavy power draw from the BMPCC4K, so I would hesitate trying to draw power from the monitor. Unfortunately, I can't recommend a store that will ship those to Australia.

  7. I'd definitely hold on to my MFT glass and cameras if the GH6 had 10 - 12 bit internal recording (BM Raw or ProRes Raw), 120fps in 4K, and internal NDs (the last one being the most important). As well as the IBIS of the GH5 and the low light capabilities of the GH5s. Throw on the 10-25mm f1.7 and I could use that camera for almost everything. Some f0.95 autofocus primes would also be great.

  8. Sounds uncannily familiar. Did it rain a lot there too ? I love Escape Room places. Played one in Madrid recently that was based on a Cold War scenario having to find evidence in a spy's flat (with perfect period decor) of a plot to launch a first strike that culminated in having to enter a code into a Commodore PET to send the abort codes to the missiles. I killed us all, sadly.

  9. I've been trying to find people to partner with to make films for a long time... You CAN do it alone.. and I made 6 films that way, hoping it would help me meet people to work with. It did not. It is a little bit of a dead end to make films alone forever. There are mediums where you can actually work alone - novels, comic books, and animation are all on par with film, or better in some ways. Film requires the most resources. Novels are the hardest to find an audience for. I might only be a cartoonist now, and not a filmmaker. Cartooning takes the most practice and time (sort of). And still no audience, but I can finally make my stuff. I do think there's an issue right now where people are not trying to partner with amateurs. A director who might go somewhere and an actor who might go somewhere, if they can communicate, should spend all their time together. But the amount of time both are just saying "no" back and forth is crazy. This is part of the reason that the "don't work for free" trend bugs the shit out of me. Mildly successful filmmakers are all just super popular - they have a little posse who worship them, they can raise stupid amounts on kickstarter, and they don't let anyone else in. So, I hope this was helpful and tragic.

Incredible videos. Now, who needs a better tool when you can make such 'things' with a 4+ years old camera? I'd rather like to learn how to grade like this then to get a gh6 for free.

Might sound like a Samyang fanboy but its worth bearing in mind that its MY far more expensive lenses its making me a look a bit silly with by more than competing with them in these tests The 24mm was up against a bona fide ten times the price cinema prime lens in that last test and it wasn't exactly getting humiliated wide open. Cinema lenses are great for continuity of performance across a set etc but for the rest of us the cost of those diminishing optical returns even on ONE lens are way better invested in other areas in my view.

  14. 10% crop makes it 1.1 crop I believe. Pretty much a non issue IMHO. I'd still probably go with the S1 at least for professional work. $700 more is worth it to get internal 4k 60p and 10 bit recording. If you have Nikon glass its still kind of a no brainer though.

Only issue with that is production quality can eliminate a lot of issues you might have with a lens. You also don't know the aperture, as most lens perform pretty nicely stopped down.

    A7siii autofocus

When the A6400 was released and first AF videos showed its performance, I said it was definitely equal or better than DPAF. Some people here laughed. This direct comparison might make them think a little more. A7S3 will match or beat the A6400 for sure as there is no way on earth the future Flagship performs less than the old entry level. The latest Canon bodies are crap, and Sony is really trying to work on their issues/critics at each body release (V3 of A7 line saw massive body improvements, battery life and so on). On top they exceed competition in performance even where they were behind like AF.

  18. Oh yes, this is the kind of detail that excites me Keep them coming. Too bad I can't scroll that still image ? I've chosen not to deal with hue shifts in my own conversions, but in your situation where one camera has way more DR than the other, it seems like something that can't be ignored.
    1 point
  19. EC was made by filming a large number of color samples with both cameras, and then extracting coordinate data from those samples and supplying that data to a my own c++ program. As channel clipping occurs, the program attempts to straighten hue lines to follow that of the higher DR camera. There is a point at which those hue lines merge during clipping, such that clipped red is identical to yellow, for example. When these regions are detected, they are reduced to near grayscale data:

  22. If it is an RR80 then this is a compatible one with a less prominent shell (which I'm presuming are for for the resistors) and a coiled cable which you should be able to cable tie up if you want it shorter. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cable-Met-K-Compatible-with-the-Remote-Release-Fujifilm-RR-80/352279060053?hash=item520577de55:g:peIAAOSwD~FbwLjF If you want to make it permanently shorter then just cut and splice after the housing like this

  23. It isn't just about 10-bit 4:2:2, you need an external recorder to get any kind of log period with the Z's. As he points out with no internal rec709 or specific gamma profiles it's not really possible to paint in camera either. The other caveats he brings up are also quite jarring.. no metering for video?! aliasing/moire in N-log. Crop when shooting 10-bit..etc

  27. There were a few memory card posts, including by me, around page 360 in this thread. Mine were at DCI4k/30, ProRes 422, though. I found a couple of posts on the BM forum here: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=87098&p=488690&hilit=SanDisk+Extreme+Pro#p488957 They said they were only to get the card to work at 12:1 & Q5 raw for 4k/60p. That card is only a V30 card, so it isn't too surprising to me that it can't record at the higher data rates required for the higher quality raw formats. Just FYI, I use the T5 and it records all formats on my cameras. There were also some really cheap CFAST cards mentioned a few days back on this thread that should work.

  29. Then you could use any of a million other monitor onlys, not necessarily a recorder. Plus heaps of mirrorless shoots only use the basic built in monitoring tools. So is not a deal breaker for the Z6 vs much of the competition (although yes, of course the likes of the GH5/GH5S is far ahead of the competition)

  30. And if you completed Myst you have my absolute and total respect... Some of the “escape room” type games are similar in that they invent impossibly difficult mechanical puzzles whilst retaining that feeling of playing in reality. I suppose Zach achieved this in his short - the impossible talking sock but grounded in a real world scenario.

  31. Congrats! I think cartoons and animation are a very interesting media because they're the only visual forms where creating a world that works very differently to ours isn't harder than just having something realistic. With film it used to be impossible but now with VFX so accessible building a convincing alternate world has gone from being impossible to impossibly expensive! It's interesting to see the differences between the worlds that exist in japanese anime with the worlds that Hollywood creates with VFX. In a sense these mediums allow unrestricted creativity and Hollywoods creations are reflective of their very recent ability to start thinking in these terms, whereas the worlds created in anime are obviously the product of a much more mature environment where highly creative thinkers have been bouncing off each-other creatively for a long time. I played computer games and the game Myst was a fascinating game because it took place in a world that really did not function the same way that ours did, and it was really evident when playing the game that you couldn't really predict what effects doing something would have.

  36. Reframe your question: "How can I learn to become a director?" Sometimes it's awesome to learn from other folk. Finding people who may be able to mentor and guide you in the right direction. These folk have been more than amazing at encouraging you to practice your work, but you made so many excuses. You made one video and then dropped out of the face of the earth. You gotta practice, practice, practice, put yourself out there, and leave your ego at the door.

I wouldn't apologise.. more info is sometimes useful, and in a world dominated by people that can't even be bothered to include all the letters in each word, someone that speaks in sequences of sentences should be applauded rather than criticised. If it's too long for anyone, they don't have to read it

  46. Perhaps not a full stop, maybe a half or 2/3 of it in my testing of BRAW in the last couple of days. And to add, it seems to me that people who criticise BRAW - in the sense whether it is RAW or raw etc. - among other things forget that BRAW is also meant to be (post)processed in the DaVinci Resolve at the first place, where this new codec - which would evolve in time to come - shows as a very robust for grading. For me, it is gradable as much as cDNG, not to mention that it is more efficient for memory cards and computers. So far I wouldn't complain, and it is still posible to roll back to the 6.1 version with cDNG, if anyone needs so.

You don’t need a set or actors or a planned story - it’s all happening out there. Be a director and tell us your story about your town. You decide how to edit and cut - fast paced or slow. Day or night? Handheld or tripod? Get music from Eric’s site soundimage.org. Improvise. Create. Direct. Think of this not as some stupid suggestion on an Internet forum (which it obviously is) but as a commission - your first - so try to show off your talent.
