I think the Good Book was misquoted and it should have read... “Jesus died for your lens.” And not for your sins.

A bit of a crisis here. So I thought that my addiction/collection was six so I'd figured out a way to have a tournament where they were seeded so that the Nikkor, the Leica and the Contax Zeiss would be automatically in the semi-finals and the fourth one to join them would be the winner of a preliminary round. I have just got them all out to line them up to give them a bit of a clean before doing it tomorrow and can you spot the flaw in that plan ? It strikes me that with having seven then the only fair way to do this would be to have an eighth one to make it four seeds and four non-seeded lenses so there would be four quarter finals and then the semi-finals and the final. This is clearly the Lord's way of telling me to buy that Samyang isn't it?

  8. Hello EOSHD, Thank you for your commitment to this platform and site. I am looking forward to new content every day and your one of the best resources available online. I totally understand that "real life" happens and you need to address your immediate needs prior to this, so no worries on delayed content from me. I would love to see you on YouTube also to provide visual demonstrations of the cameras, lenses, and results of your findings when you can. You can certainly embed them here for traffic. I would love to see your thoughts and insight for the following: Nikon Z6 Fujifilm X-T3 Fujifilm X-H1 Canon EOS R Sony A73 Thanks! Dave

  9. Here is a scan of the user guide. Page 74 onwards details the operation of the light meter. http://www.cameramanuals.org/leica_pdf/leica_m6_ttl.pdf With regard to exposure control in general, depending on the conditions you are shooting in, you may find the 1/1000th shutter speed to be a limitation if you are using ISO800 film and shooting at f2 as you are describing. In that case you would have to either carry some ND filters with you to keep the correct exposure within those fixed parameters or pull (overexpose) by setting the ISO lower on the camera for the metering and then have the overexposure corrected during development. For the opposite problem where you do not have enough light you would push (underexpose) by setting the ISO higher on the camera for the metering and then have the underexposure corrected during development. A guide to pushing and pulling is here https://thedarkroom.com/pushing-and-pulling-film/

  10. Great news. Looking forward to seeing how you get along with the Kipon Medium Format Speedbooster on the Nikon. I use it at least once for every shoot with my EOS-R, both at home and at work. With a 150mm its a joy for stills.

  11. X-t2 and XT-3 are virtually the same unless you are pixel peeping. The A7III is much cleaner than the XT3. 3200 on the XT3 looks like 12,800 on the A7III. That said the difference is the A73 has ghosting issues and more noticeable noise reduction. Thats not something you can fix in post. I say the Black magic Pocket 4k is one of the best low light performers as it gives you an unprocessed image. You can always process and image more in editing but you can unprocess already baked in NR.

  12. Glad to hear you're back! Hope NAB brings a lot of inspiration, for now the camera market is kind of booring IMO. On a side note, I hope "real"/"big" medium format comes soon with video, 645 sensor size is somewhat of a APS-C version of medium format, eh? Give us 0,65x crop xD

  17. Really interesting stuff. First time I've heard of Duclos, Celere, CML or most of the rest that was written. Surely the easiest way to prove Celere and Samyang lenses are different would be to post the lens diagrams?

  18. I played around a bit more and noticed that in a particular view of the resolutions it said something at the bottom about using left / right on the directional pad to fine tune the adjustments. I'm not near it at the moment so don't recall the wording or which screen it was on (it wasn't all of them that allowed resolution adjustments, just one I think). The directional buttons allow you to cycle through the "in between" resolutions.

  19. They both have nice color, but would be a pain for sure. Definitely possible as both have very nice codecs. XT3 is better. Though the P4K is really good as well. Probably the two best low light performers outside of the A7S2. The GH5S is nice but retains less detail and the A73 has weird ghosting issues and there is no way to turn of its noise reduction. I don't know enough about the Nikon Z6 to say. It could be a real winner recording externally(not really sure how good the internal recordings are). I know they are very clean but I am not sure how good or bad the NR is.

  20. 100% certain; I would call it the #1 camera. Expect something soon; that said, can you live without IBIS? I think I will keep both Stunning! Wouldn't have thought a G9 would look so good, like no G9 I've seen

  21. @Kisaha another consideration are the Zeiss Classics... they used the same glass in the ZF and ZE versions as they do in the CP.2. With a Cine mod from Duclos or Simmod, you’ll have perfectly usable cinema lenses with that Zeiss look. You can easily get a couple primes, in your favorite focal lengths for around the same money as the Samyangs. Another option, which may make the most sense, since you’re going with the Olympus 12-100, is to go with native Olympus primes. The 17mm 1.8 is a glorious little lens and that manual focus clutch is like using a proper focus ring. Now if you’re looking at the Samyang lenses because of their Cine Lens characteristics... declicked aperture and lens gears... then why not buy the 85mm used and see how you get along with it and then build a set of individual primes as you need them. I think the problem with the Samyang lenses is quality control... so if you buy the kit and the 24mm is wonky, do you have to return the whole kit? As far as IQ goes, I found this video from the Samyang 24mm shot on an FS7. I think it’s a beautiful image. I already posted it in the lens section, so sorry for the repost if you’ve already seen it. So basically, I think you have lots of options and I think that these lenses are as relevant as any lens. I mean, a lot of DPs are using Nikkor lenses from the 60s, so if a 50 year old lens can still be relevant, I cannot believe that a 7 year old lens wouldn’t be. @AlexTrinder96 nice work... which Xeens did you use and how do you like them? Also what camera were those shot with?

  22. These a few frame grabs from a short I did last year... used a set of Xeens and Samyangs, they matched very well - only a slight difference in warmth between the two sets.

    Interesting stuff to watch...

We don't have a thread for stuff we're watching, and I was going to say that I'm currently watching Homecoming on Amazon and it's very interesting. The series deals with two different time periods as well as 'altered states' and it uses quite a range of cinematic techniques, as well as just being really well shot with interesting angles. Things that might be interesting: One of the time periods has a very distinct colour grade (normal) but also appears to be square or slightly-vertical crop (a first for me) - very cool Some shots are with 'clean' lenses, others with blurry edges for a slight tunnel-vision effect, and the occasional shot is full-on Helios territory with strange bokeh Really nice story, cinematography and editing etc. Recommended!

  25. Even though the Takumar has fungus, I still think it’s the winner. The Minoltas look good too but the Tak and Pentax just has a little more... oomph. Maybe it’s just me, but you really do adjust fairly quickly to the different focus directions. But, I believe I shot with a lot of Nikkors and Pentax/Tak Lenses when I first started, so in some ways that direction feels more natural. Sorry to say, even with the cheap price, the Petri is the big loser here. Cool test. Thanks.

  26. Telephotos.... All lenses wide open: All lenses at f8: The 150mm S-M-C Takumar has fungus in it (I couldn't open it to clean it!) so some of the haze will be to do with that. The Petri is the obvious winner here when you take into account the price - $4 on ebay. Beyond that, the Pentax lenses are all in wonderful condition, and the Minoltas are seriously worn, the 135mm especially, but still deliver a lovely image. I can't over-state how nice the Pentax lenses are to use, the dials are smoother than silk, and the build quality and feel are spectacular. They are on a par with my Voigtlander 17.5mm 0.95 which cost almost 50 times as much. I'm keeping the Minoltas and the Petri because they have the focus the correct direction for my muscle memory, but otherwise the Pentax lenses would be just great.

  28. Oh I agree 8K frame grabs will become the norm down the road for Photography. I doubt there will even Be a Photo mode in cameras years from now. Just 8K bust mode or better.
