  1. I'm going to be back up to full throttle on EOSHD starting today. For those of you who are wondering where I've been and what I've been doing, here's a glance at what I've been working on... Read the full article

  3. The 4K full frame S1 is on my desk at EOSHD HQ and for the first time it's the final released camera that is shipping to stores, with firmware version 1.0. I couldn't offer any original files from my shoot in Barcelona as the firmware back then was version 0.7. So now's your chance, if you're wondering how good the initial 10bit codec is at just 72Mbit or how well it grades, to download my files and have a look for yourself... Read the full article

  4. @Andrew Reid, in FCPX go to the Inspector window, click "Settings" in the bottom left drop down menu and change colour space to Rec2020. Bingo! Did a very quick colour correction in FCPX to show it works... the top one.

  5. I am interested in it as a still only Canon shooter. This will accept EF lenses via MC-21 adapter. Sigma EF will have native support via FW update. For $200 more than EOS R, this offer dual card slot (XQD/CFE), newer sensor than 5D IV/EOSR with better ISO and hopefully DR, IBIS, better 4K, better EVF, better video options. While Canon lenses are very nice, I don't shoot 50 1.2 or care too much about their $3000 28-70 F2. ALL FF mirror-less lenses are expensive but I expect Sigma mirrorless lenses to be affordable.

  6. Guys, don't raise too much your expectations. The G85 was a GX85 in a "DSLR" body, better EVF, weather sealing, Dual IS 2, flip screen and mic input. The absence of the 6k Photo Mode, for me, tells that this camera is the same - a GX9 with the same improvements. Hence, the same 1,22x crop over the MFTs 2x crop, and the same video specs, same DFD AF. Price will probably US$ 899 - clashes with the XT-30, which is arguably a better video camera; probably Panasonic will bet that IBIS and weather sealing will be enough. Hope that I'm wrong, but after the LX200, I see Panasonic not spending a dime in reasearch for the new MFT cameras until the GH6.

  8. Hopefully some 120fps action, was a pity that the G85 capped out at 60fps no matter how low you set your resolution.

I think the Good Book was misquoted and it should have read... “Jesus died for your lens.” And not for your sins.

A bit of a crisis here. So I thought that my addiction/collection was six so I'd figured out a way to have a tournament where they were seeded so that the Nikkor, the Leica and the Contax Zeiss would be automatically in the semi-finals and the fourth one to join them would be the winner of a preliminary round. I have just got them all out to line them up to give them a bit of a clean before doing it tomorrow and can you spot the flaw in that plan ? It strikes me that with having seven then the only fair way to do this would be to have an eighth one to make it four seeds and four non-seeded lenses so there would be four quarter finals and then the semi-finals and the final. This is clearly the Lord's way of telling me to buy that Samyang isn't it?

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Nice, I recently shot a similar scene with a cheap Neewer LED (blue gelled) bounced off the ceiling and an LED stick inside the window. Face was just lit with the phone! Loving the GH5S, this was shot at 5000 ISO. Grading started with GHAlex and then a bunch of other adjustments as you can see. ?

  12. Well, the E1 is the best DSLR body ever designed. Still have mine. The one next is the SL and very shortly thereafter the EM1X. live ND is great but only makes sense at the highest setting. the handheld high resolution is great, scenery permitting. Definitely a great bonus, especially considering the improvement in ISO performance. You wouldn’t believe that’s from m4/3. video wise I like what I’ve seen. The 60fps is a bummer because for wildlife that would habe been great, e.g. slow down a starting eagle. As I wrote I will get one... only depends on what’s on the upcoming lens roadmap. 12-100 is awesome but F4... 12-40 is great but no is and I had one before I went Gh5 + 12-60 ... so I’m still looking. The long stuff is easy as I have the 300mm B

  13. I've had some rabbit holes, Stax L700... Meh.... Hifiman HE1000... I don't regret the H1000 but the cheaper Ananda is just as good, and Sundara unique in it's own way... A total steal at £300 when it was on sale last month at Amazon. HE1000 were closer to £3k when they came out!!! Then there's the DACs and amps.... One of the reasons I disappeared from EOSHD for long periods at a time was because of my audio obsession!! Check Zeos out here... He gets a bit too excited but he's almost always RIGHT.

  14. Interesting take on the E-M1X. I had forgot about the LiveND altogether but for stills I imagine it would be great... Having that real-time moving slow shutter shot to accurately shoot at slow shutter speeds handheld with the stabiliser is going to be unique and very creative indeed. I like the chunky chassis, original Four Thirds Olympus E-1 was a very comfortable DSLR! And don't forget Olympus OM-LOG and Cinema 4K! And I can confirm it works great I would love to upload more videos, unfortunately where I am living at the moment there's not much to shoot - a few sheep, a few hills and some drunk locals. I am in transition between the Berlin artist life with plenty to shoot and plenty of content, to seeking it all out from scratch in the UK again... Will take me a while to get back into my stride, but when I travel - say to Italy or Spain or back to Berlin I always bring 5 or 6 current exciting models with me and shoot there. I have a lot from my last trip to Berlin that I've not uploaded yet. I better get my arse in gear and get round to it.

  15. Not necessarily, as it's converted back to RGB data before it reaches the DNG file. I have the P20 Pro and that had a Quad Bayer sensor, with a-typical RAW sensor data, and my image processing app Polarr supported the DNGs straight off the bat. I expect similar this time. In DNG the images are incredibly natural with no Chinese processing whatsoever and dynamic range is exceptional. Has anyone had the chance to use multi-frame RAW on the Pixel 3 and seen the dynamic range advantages of that yet? Do you watch Z Reviews on YouTube? He's taught me a LOT about headphones. I saw his review of the Alara. I have too many existing cans now though, so I've peaked with my Z Review related purchases The favourites of that odyssey were: - Mr Speakers Aeon (Closed) - Hifiman Ananda and Sundara - Beyerdynamic T5p for portable use - Focal Elear (open, very good for the price) - ZMF Aeolus Also the old Denon D5000 and EMU Teac variants have a unique sound signature, very enjoyable. The Hifiman stuff is so good I am selling my Audeze LCD X and Sennheiser HD800S. Best thing is Hifiman aren't a rip off, either.

  20. all atomos recorders have latency from 50-200ms depending on what kind of function is enabled (LUT, wave, etc.) It is easy to measure, turn on the laptop screen stopwatch with miliseconds and HDMI output connect to the Ninja , and take photo your mobile phone both screens simultaneously. my old Ninja 2 has 180ms my blackmagic videoassist has no latency with LUT disable. (immeasurable) Video assist 5" with LUT enable has 60-70ms latency Notebook hdmi out has minimal latency (1-2ms) for gh5 it was no matter what I turned on, it was always 140-170ms! BMMCC has 80ms Sony Z150 - SDI out has 50ms using a higher frame rate (50p) is output latency mostly by half. (I use on live big screen show 50p only)

  22. I hope they charge $1200 and give us: 1. Unlimited recording time. 2. 10-bit 4-2-0 internal. 3. A few flavours of VLog and bitrate options. 4. 120fps. 5. Better autofocus in video. 6. A 20(/+) sensor with improved RAW. 7. EVF being slightly better. 8. Headphon jack. Though it's a hardware thing and if they haven't implemented it, it won't make it. The XT3 is like $1500 (probably $1399 and below at few places now), and is a monster for video and stills. Panasonic can only beat or equal that camera in video performance, at a slightly lower price point. They should try and make the most of it. I am bored with the 8-bit 4-2-0 regurgitated from every camera ever made.

  26. It would be interesting to see someone shoot a scene that includes a test chart, then apply NR in post to the XT3 and P4K until they match the level of detail and IQ from the A7III. If the A7III gives a certain resolution and noise level at some ISO but you can get the same noise level but with better resolution by applying NR in post to the other cameras then in the real-world they would beat the A7III. Far too many people are judging cameras like the entire post-production phase doesn't exist, when unfortunately half the image processing happens inside the camera these days.

    The big random lens shootout

No post-processing done. The only adjustment I made between any of the shots was aperture (of course) and SS for exposure. The scene had very strong light coming from left-of-frame from a ~3m full-height window with full Australian sun, so I suspect it's a difference in the flare, and at the time I thought it was due to the coating, but the fact it varies so much between the two apertures that doesn't seem to make sense. The other thing is that the exposures weren't all identical because the apertures didn't always line up to full-stops and I didn't have infinitely adjustable SS, so just matched the exposure to the nearest third-stop SS adjustment. Maybe that is playing a role too? I'm not really sure why people don't like the Petri. The other lenses make it look low contrast, but in reality the other lenses are also low-contrast in comparison to other lenses, but unfortunately I don't own any of them and couldn't include them in the test!

  30. Honestly so far I'm not sold on it. On paper it seems amazing and in lots of ways it is, but practically speaking for me it's not a game changer... yet. Being limited to odd crop sizes and limited frame rates (i.e. hard to get decent res at 60fps) is not great. Fully understand the hardware limitations all the ML contributors have to work with. The effort and ingenuity being put in to work around the limitations is amazing but I need more time with it to see if the downsides and extra workflow elements is worthwhile for me. So far it seems like if the scene is exposed properly there isn't a massive noticeable difference in the final footage with raw vs the default h.264. But again I need more time to fine tune the settings and figure out the best workflow.

  31. I agree with this. I'm very curious about the contrast difference between the f3.5 and f8 shots on the Petri @kye I'm presuming its a difference in a post correction rather than the lens causing it ?

  33. I shoot interviews with an EVA1 and a GH5s. Both are connected to a 15.6" 4k production monitor. Toggling between the two, the EVA1 signal is dead-on while the GH5s shows serious lag. It's ridiculous, really -- maybe 4 to 5 frames of delay. I don't have a Ninja V, but it would be interesting to see if it introduced lag when connected to the EVA1, which again, has nearly none when connected to any of my monitors or EVFs.

  34. Even though the Takumar has fungus, I still think it’s the winner. The Minoltas look good too but the Tak and Pentax just has a little more... oomph. Maybe it’s just me, but you really do adjust fairly quickly to the different focus directions. But, I believe I shot with a lot of Nikkors and Pentax/Tak Lenses when I first started, so in some ways that direction feels more natural. Sorry to say, even with the cheap price, the Petri is the big loser here. Cool test. Thanks.
