  1. I think part of the price difference has to do with economies of scale. At the low end, it's mostly the housings that are different. The Xeens and CP2s I believe are optically identical (or very nearly optically identical) to still lenses that are about 1/4 the price. But the housings are huge and built for use with cinema equipment: big front diameter, big barrel for longer smooth focus throws. The glass is the same. Same deal with Canon's cinema primes and Sigma's, I think. At the very high end it's another story. Some incredible stuff there, even based on specs alone (24-290mm t2.8, lots of super fast wides). Those are HUGE in terms of glass and housing. Some of the character lenses are amazing in terms of look (Cooke S3s and anamorphics and super speeds in particular–weirdly the Cookes are tiny and old Zeiss lenses are pretty small, too). But if you're only after image quality, today's Sigma primes, for instance, hold up remarkably well against Master Primes or Angenieux zooms. The difference is there, but it's smaller than the difference between good and bad still lenses in my experience. I compared the 17-55mm Canon and the 15-40mm Angenieux and they could intercut okay, even if the Angenieux is better. But at the same stop, I'm not sure the Angenieux would be that much better than the 18-35mm Sigma. But the mechanics are very different... which the rehoused Sigmas try to address, but I'm not sure if they have cam focusing or not. Zooms have to be parfocal and lenses have to breathe less, too, so that's expensive to implement, sort of having the lens zoom a little as it focuses to counteract breathing, I guess. And, of course, it's rental gear vs consumer gear so just different markets. But I think the difference is more mechanics than optics. There have been a lot of rehoused still lenses (Nikon and Leica R largely) in use in cinema, even before the current ranges.

  2. The 4K full frame S1 is on my desk at EOSHD HQ and for the first time it's the final released camera that is shipping to stores, with firmware version 1.0. I couldn't offer any original files from my shoot in Barcelona as the firmware back then was version 0.7. So now's your chance, if you're wondering how good the initial 10bit codec is at just 72Mbit or how well it grades, to download my files and have a look for yourself... Read the full article

    Z CAM S35 camera

So there’s been an ongoing thread on Z Cam Facebook group related to their Fall to be released S35 camera. The company is really trying to get customers’ input regarding the features. There’s also a rumor it would be presented on NAB. 14+ usable DR, 6k 60 fps, probably EF and M43 mounts will be available. Anyone here excited about it?

  4. I find it kinda weird, that no amount of lenses, chips, processing and firmware make phone videos look less.. like phone videos. I mean that Parker's video is beautifully shot with some gorgeous landscapes but it still looks like a phone video. I don't even know why.. maybe it's the oversharpening but I feel like there's more to it.

I'll let you know whether I'm excited after they announce the price! But even if it is out of my budget, I hope they make an absolute killer camera. I like their approach to hardware and software design, and how well engaged they are with their community.

  7. I have been following you for years. I am glad to hear you have your fire back, Don't let the trolls get you down. We may not say it enough but I am sure thousands of people think you are amazing. I just noticed I have been a member since 2012 and remember talking to Andrew in a film forum in 2010 or so. He has always been innovative. Keep up the great work.

  9. I've just shot part one of this lens comparison which is the ~70-80mm equivalent lenses for MFT. https://app.sugarsync.com/iris/wf/D8480669_08693060_6019565 Notes: It's a mixture of cheap/expensive and vintage/modern lenses, and my goal was to see how these lenses compared aesthetically and to choose which to keep All shots were taken with my GH5 which has a 2x crop compared to FF, so your FOV may vary, and remember that the edges distort more than the centre part which is what we're looking at This isn't designed to tell you how good each lens is, but more how good they are compared to each other - google has many great examples from each of these lenses All shots taken in RAW and converted to JPG but with no other processing so this is almost SOOC I tried to match FOV for lenses with different focal lengths, but it's an imperfect test I started with each lens wide open and then stopped-down, some lenses have more photos because they have half-stop clicks, some have full-stops, some are click-less (in which case I did full-stops) but they're not exact so some exposure differences are in there, I also noticed that exposures were often off so I'm not confident that all the clicks were accurate on all the lenses (some are vintage after all) The electronic shutter only goes up to 1s exposures, so some of the lenses didn't get tested at their smallest apertures, but diffraction just kicks in so I don't feel like we're missing much Apart from adjusting aperture (and shutter speed to compensate) everything else was manual, ISO 100, and identical WB and lighting, so colour differences are the lenses I focused each lens on the marks on the little white card in the centre and normally stopped the lens down a stop or so to help with manual focus, I've heard some lenses change focus as you adjust the aperture but I didn't allow for that so the focus might shift a little perhaps Unless noted the lenses were used without a speed booster, and the SB I used with the two Helios lenses was a cheap Chinese one from ebay. I also shot the Helios lenses without a SB so you can compare and see if the SB is good or not. My next step is to test the 135-200mm lenses (270-400mm equivalents) which I can't test with the current setup because my room isn't long enough. I'll add these to this same thread when they're ready. After that I'll narrow the field down a bit and go shoot some real-world video to see how they go. Happy to hear impressions about what you see, what you like and what you don't.

I'm expecting the Sigma MC21 EF to L adapter to be released next month so I'll be doing more EF comparisons as I've got a hotchpotch of different ones that I'll now be able to use on my SL. The focus control being woken up for the Pocket4K with the new Metabones firmware is a bit of a game changer as well. Not so much the AF (though it is useful but only 1 shot) but being able to control focus remotely using the joystick/app combo is pretty good. I'm off to Japan in a few weeks and I'm looking at some interesting prices there for the Sigma ART 24-35mm f2. I will of course be checking in at the secondhand store run by the two somewhat, erm, "curt" older gentlemen to see if they have any FD stuff for cheap.

They are nice little lenses. Years ago I never had any luck with them but last year I bought a modified 50mm 1.4 and I was stunned by it. It matched my ef 28mm beautifully. But then stupidly I sold it. But then a couple of months ago I found another one that was modified and paid a stupidly cheap price for it. And this copy was better than my first. But last night I saw how cheap the 1.2L was and I couldn’t resist... so expect a bad and fast 50mm FD lens comparison in B&W in coming weeks. If it’s only moderately better than the 1.4, I’ll just sell the 1.2L for a nice little profit... but from what I have read, there is not a nicer manual 50mm lens than the FD 50mm 1.2 L. We shall see. Interstingly, the 135mm f/2 gets pretty good reviews as well...

Always good to snag a bargain! I've never actually owned an FD mount lens though I do own an adapter that I'd bought in advance when I was supposed to be buying one but the deal fell through . Was it by chance a 135mm version that I was supposed to be buying ?

@BTM_Pix yeah I thought the same thing and asked him over in the Magic Lantern forum. In the US, there’s a company called Simmod that offers a full Cine mod for FD Lenses using Ed Mika adapters so if all looks okay with the lens, I’ll send it their way. I may have to charge up the batteries on my EOS-M to test out the lens... maybe I’ll give the new experimental EOS-M build a test while I’m at it. Btw even with the cost of the mod, I’ll be cheaper than what most versions of the lens sell for on eBay... by a good bit actually.

Thank goodness the preamps are so bad on the Z6 that I have held off buying it. Plus I can't really think of a good B camera to the Z6 (besides another Z6).

says 12 bit and 14 bit RAW unfortunate Still in comparison with an EVA1 its $2500 cheaper and does internal RAW as well as maybe prores and at a higher resolution. The XT3 sensor is really nice if its the one being used. Wish it was $1000 cheaper but for what you get its really not a bad price.

  19. I have no idea which brand has the worst, but I've seen fanboys for every brand/camera. Honestly, it doesn't matter who's worse because being a fanboy is insanely dumb no matter how you slice it. I'll use whatever I can afford and whatever makes my life easier. I love / hate stuff about pretty much every camera I've owned and used. They are all tools. Some do certain things better/worse than other things. Most of the issues stem from people projecting their own needs and/or preferences onto everyone else. There was a big thread on DVXUSER about GAS, and it went off track into smaller cameras vs larger ones. I (and another in the thread) prefer smaller cameras for run and gun. Others thought we were crazy. No one's wrong, it's just a preference. It's human nature on display, I suppose.

Ouch! Double the Z Cam E2 price At this price point I'd probably instead just wait to get lucky with a secondhand Panasonic EVA1 or Sony FS7 My guess is the audio cable needed will be the same as for the Arri Alexa Mini And probably what is needed for TC is the same as just got announced for TC with the Z Cam E2

  22. Here are direct links to B&H listings (and one ebay) for adapters that you need. FD mount https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1455241-REG/kipon_fd_sl_adapter.html F mount (with Aperture control) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1455330-REG/kipon_nikon_g_sl_adapter.html EF Mount (I'm presuming EF mount for your Rokinon lenses?) As you don't need any electronic control of those lenses then this dumb adapter will be all you need. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-EOS-mount-EF-lens-to-Leica-T-L-T-adapter-LT-T-Type-701-Mirrorless-camera-/400895423962 If you DO need electronic control of EF lenses (including AF) then this is the CURRENTLY available option. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1265614-REG/novoflex_sl_eos_canon_ef_lens_to.html However, it is not particularly good so the best option is to wait for this Sigma one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1463159-REG/sigma_sigma_mc_21_mount_converter_lens.html If by chance you have PL mount versions of those cine lenses then here is the adapter https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1295947-REG/novoflex_let_pl_pl_mount_lens_adapter_to.html For M Mount you can get this which is Leica's own official one but cheaper 3rd party ones are available https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1046772-REG/leica_18771_m_adapter_t_for_leica_t.html Hope that helps.

  27. Either of these cameras will be a massive massive massive MASSIVE leap forward in stills capabilities over your D80! And of course even an old iPhone will be an improvement in video quality over your D80..... I think when making such a massive leap forward you should consider which is greater value for your money, which the X-T3 would be. And is a light year leap ahead of the Nikon D80 10 megapixel CCD sensor from 2006!

Delicious! what a word to use!! I think I will adopt that word as my goal for all images and colour grading The more we analyse those two images, the more confused I get about what is going on with that lens.. what other tests should I run to better understand what's going on?

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Nice, I recently shot a similar scene with a cheap Neewer LED (blue gelled) bounced off the ceiling and an LED stick inside the window. Face was just lit with the phone! Loving the GH5S, this was shot at 5000 ISO. Grading started with GHAlex and then a bunch of other adjustments as you can see. ?

  31. Interesting take on the E-M1X. I had forgot about the LiveND altogether but for stills I imagine it would be great... Having that real-time moving slow shutter shot to accurately shoot at slow shutter speeds handheld with the stabiliser is going to be unique and very creative indeed. I like the chunky chassis, original Four Thirds Olympus E-1 was a very comfortable DSLR! And don't forget Olympus OM-LOG and Cinema 4K! And I can confirm it works great I would love to upload more videos, unfortunately where I am living at the moment there's not much to shoot - a few sheep, a few hills and some drunk locals. I am in transition between the Berlin artist life with plenty to shoot and plenty of content, to seeking it all out from scratch in the UK again... Will take me a while to get back into my stride, but when I travel - say to Italy or Spain or back to Berlin I always bring 5 or 6 current exciting models with me and shoot there. I have a lot from my last trip to Berlin that I've not uploaded yet. I better get my arse in gear and get round to it.

  32. Not necessarily, as it's converted back to RGB data before it reaches the DNG file. I have the P20 Pro and that had a Quad Bayer sensor, with a-typical RAW sensor data, and my image processing app Polarr supported the DNGs straight off the bat. I expect similar this time. In DNG the images are incredibly natural with no Chinese processing whatsoever and dynamic range is exceptional. Has anyone had the chance to use multi-frame RAW on the Pixel 3 and seen the dynamic range advantages of that yet? Do you watch Z Reviews on YouTube? He's taught me a LOT about headphones. I saw his review of the Alara. I have too many existing cans now though, so I've peaked with my Z Review related purchases The favourites of that odyssey were: - Mr Speakers Aeon (Closed) - Hifiman Ananda and Sundara - Beyerdynamic T5p for portable use - Focal Elear (open, very good for the price) - ZMF Aeolus Also the old Denon D5000 and EMU Teac variants have a unique sound signature, very enjoyable. The Hifiman stuff is so good I am selling my Audeze LCD X and Sennheiser HD800S. Best thing is Hifiman aren't a rip off, either.

  33. Or shoot RAW DNG which doesn't have any sharpening whatsoever. I have upgraded with EE! Cost me £30 for the phone on a £53 per month tariff with 60GB of data. Not bad. Considerably cheaper than most of the high-end iPhone tariffs at £70-£90+!! It is shipping in about 7-10 days. At the moment I have an iPhone XS Max and very happy with it, but increasingly I've been splitting my handset use between iOS and Android devices. I have an LG V30 which I use for the quad-DAC headphone output as my DAP with a variety of headphones. I have my original P20 Pro when I want to shoot RAW and the iPhone camera doesn't cut it. Most of the time I use the iPhone XS Max as my main phone, and have been mightily impressed with the camera especially the new Portrait mode but the P30 Pro looks like it's in another league. Time of flight camera?!?! 40MP!? 50x zoom (5x of it optical!) Bring it on.

A bit of a crisis here. So I thought that my addiction/collection was six so I'd figured out a way to have a tournament where they were seeded so that the Nikkor, the Leica and the Contax Zeiss would be automatically in the semi-finals and the fourth one to join them would be the winner of a preliminary round. I have just got them all out to line them up to give them a bit of a clean before doing it tomorrow and can you spot the flaw in that plan ? It strikes me that with having seven then the only fair way to do this would be to have an eighth one to make it four seeds and four non-seeded lenses so there would be four quarter finals and then the semi-finals and the final. This is clearly the Lord's way of telling me to buy that Samyang isn't it?

  42. Telephotos.... All lenses wide open: All lenses at f8: The 150mm S-M-C Takumar has fungus in it (I couldn't open it to clean it!) so some of the haze will be to do with that. The Petri is the obvious winner here when you take into account the price - $4 on ebay. Beyond that, the Pentax lenses are all in wonderful condition, and the Minoltas are seriously worn, the 135mm especially, but still deliver a lovely image. I can't over-state how nice the Pentax lenses are to use, the dials are smoother than silk, and the build quality and feel are spectacular. They are on a par with my Voigtlander 17.5mm 0.95 which cost almost 50 times as much. I'm keeping the Minoltas and the Petri because they have the focus the correct direction for my muscle memory, but otherwise the Pentax lenses would be just great.

  43. You can also get X-H1 (with IBIS, but no 10-bit and 120p not so good) for 950 EUR in European grey market shops. X-H1 also has better ergonomics when shooting handheld. When rigged up, then does not matter. I've used Sony a7 cameras before and their user experience is just crap. The image is lifeless compared to Fuji. Mostly I shoot JPG with Fuji. You just dial in your settings and you are done.

  44. @KingsJoy Building on @webrunner5s sound comments, I would suggest that any of these cameras are an excellent choice and it's about getting the right camera for you and your particular priorities and shooting style and situations. Most of these cameras have weaknesses, some are quite significant weaknesses, and some of these have considerable strengths. I'm no expert, but: the GH5 has excellent IBIS, great image, is a solid workhorse, but the AF is a problem for some people in some situations the a7iii is great at low-light, but some don't like the image, and the menus are difficult many people think the XT3 has a better image than the GH5 etc.. I'd suggest you have a think about how you use the camera, what features are more important and which are less important, and then read the reviews of each and compare the pros and cons for you. For example, I shoot high speed run-n-gun hand-held and was looking at the A7iii and had ruled out the GH5 because I was looking for great AF, but I realised that MF and the aesthetic that comes with it is actually something I like, and the GH5 being a highly-cropped mirrorless made adapting lenses very easy, so I ended up with that. Your situation will be different. There are no bad cameras in your list.
