  4. I talked today with the official reseller. Most pre-orders will be serviced until the end of April, and after that they will have a normal flow of cameras. They told me that if I pre order today, they estimate I will have the camera before June. I think I will do it.

It provides 7.4v and 12v outputs. With a fully charged pattern NP 970 7800 mAh battery using the 7.4v output I am getting 1hr 35mins of continuous 4k Prores recording to the external SSD.

So on my quest for the best manual 50mm lens, I just bought an FD 50mm 1.2 L lens, for a great price, that I plan on having converted to EF. Everything I’ve read about the lens has been stellar. Are there any owners of the lens that can confirm, or deny it?

  11. I played a bit with my Insta this past long weekend and it was great fun. Everyone loved it and were truly impressed, a lot more than my Mavic 2 Pro or the huge bag of 4 mirrorless and 5 lenses! I downloaded some GoPro VR plug ins from Kolor Pano website for Adobe Premiere and made the whole editing process a breeze. Maybe the Pocket 4K is the last traditional camera I am buying. Imagine in 2022 a 360 8K camera with m43 dual pixel sensors.. I am truly and genuinely impressed by Insta. You shot something on the beach, and while having a coctail or beer, you export your 360 video or edit a "normal" version.

  12. I loved my time with the Micro. Being an FCPX user, it was great having those ProRes files to directly import into FC. Unfortunately, I was an early adopter so there weren’t many options for rigging and being a run and gun, hobbyist filmmaker... it just wasn’t practical. Now there are way more options, I even noticed that Fotga recently released a cheap, little 5” monitor that has LUT support and the ability to power the camera... it takes Sony NP batteries. So needless to say, if I come across a Micro for the right price, I’ll surely buy another. Heck, even the Micro Studio 4K now exports a Raw signal through its SDI and could be a great little camera to pair with an external recorder.

  14. My friend will be getting 2 R’s after he tried one for a wedding shoot to go with c200, I guess that make more sense than the a6500 he got as bcam atm. Yeah the Canon 35mm IS with 0.5 macro is the best everyday lens anyone has come up with so far! That macro is really useful for slice of life stuff, the closest thing would be Batis 40 f2 cf or Tamron 35 1.8 VC but their magnification is around 0.3x and batis is like 3x the price.

  16. Yes, according to him the original was capable to record raw and convert to prores and they said that if a camera company wanted they could even give it raw with firmware (I guess this is what ended up being the Z6 raw). No idea. The patent for the EF mount expired "coincidently" around the same time as the BMCC was announced. So maybe we could count backwards to when it was first released and then take it from there as some sort of reference The tweet was from Canon USA Pro and it contained a poll that basically said, "What do you want to learn about at NAB, Raw lite in the C200 or EOS-R Raw Recording?"

  17. I think its great for making little 30 second pieces from using the re-frame function in the app. To be able to make something interesting with multiple angles from basically just being stood there holding it makes it a great holiday/event camera as far as I'm concerned.

  18. Agreed... for some purposes. But if the intention is to view on a phone or iPad type device in a casual and fun environment then, yes, the quality is absolutely there. I had mine on the snow earlier this year - initially I thought it was dreadful and was going to bin it. But my wife thought it was fabulous and watched the fun rather than the banding, dubious stitching (at times) and any number of other limitations (features?). The ability to let your audience reframe is astounding and produces a genuine immersive experience. I think it’s used by Sky Brown (who must be the coolest person in the world) in her BBC sport video.

  19. You might get lucky finding an Olympus E-M10 III or Panasonic G85 secondhand for near ish to your budget? Otherwise go for the older Olympus E-M10 II which can be found even cheaper. I remember filming with my a5100 years ago and it would overheat after every take! So very frustrating

    ARRI ALEXA Mini LF

From my perspective it has got a slightly somewhat smarter body design for audio, at least compared to the original Alexa Mini which was pretty awful. The timecode connector is in a more sensible location, and it has gained an internal scratch mic (wish it had four track recording, like say the FS7 has, then you could have both internal scratch mics plus an external audio source being recorded all at once). Plus the audio input is no longer in the awkward spot at the front, but why oh why did they have to change the Lemo connector to a completely different type??? (previous it was 5 pin Lemo line level only, now it is a 6 pin Lemo connector for audio. Oh well, I guess that is yet more audio cables I must buy) No. https://www.facebook.com/DavidCMPeterson/photos/a.277946442237979/2435658336466768/

  22. How about an RX10? Great 1080p. Mic input. Headphone output. Constant 2.8 aperture. Built in ND filter. You may be able to find the Mark II for under $500 if you look hard enough and that will give you 4K and good 1080 up to 120p.

  26. Ok, firstly, thanks all to everyone who has chipped in. I guess I should have clarified something about this. My wife does travel a lot for business and in the past she used a Sony a5100 with the 16-50 kit lens Instead of her cell phone). I think the MAIN reason that she used the a5100 instead of the S7 she owns was... she believes that she needs a "real" camera to achieve her artistic vision. Seriously: I try to show her videos on youtube of cinematic footage taken with a smartphone and she ain't having it. Now, if you know me well (and, thank your lucky stars that you DON'T know me well), you would know that I HATE spending money on things that I don't need / won't get used. So believe me that I have Anti-GAS; I mean, I have been asking people about an upgrade from my a6500 on this forum for two years now, and I STILL use my a6500 and haven't replaced it with anything. No a7 III, no Z6, no X-T3, no GH5, no EOS R / RP. So, anyway, I would just have her use the a5100 (since it is just lying here collecting dust, and since she used it a lot for photos in the past), but for video those things overheat in the mild San Francisco weather in about 12 minutes. I am sure they wouldn't last half that in Morocco. Now, I could get her an a6000 as @Kisaha suggested, but I am pretty sure she will appreciate the flip out screen and the IBIS a lot more than the aps-c sensor of the a6000. I think a mic input would be pretty important, too. a600 doesn't have one, but it could work with a proprietary Sony mic that uses the hotshoe to transmit the audio from the mic to the camera.

  29. i dont think you have made a bad buy its looks like you haven't bought a complete lens. As it looks to me like your missing the another lens that would screw into the back of the ultrastrar and then mount to the projector. As i understand it the rear lens is not required for shooting anamorphic video on an a7. I think the normal procedure is to buy a lens clamp that fits the back of your ultrastar and then mount that to your taking lens or whichever lens you have on the front of your camera. you should probably start with a lens around 85mm in focal length as that shouldn't vignette. not sure what the crop factor is on an a7 so can experiment to see how wide you can go before it vignettes. Good luck. if you still get stuck post another message

Its pretty much obligatory as trying to zoom with it and support it at the same time is a bit of a chore balance wise. Not to mention the danger of nipped skin. I'll try it with my GX80 tomorrow and let you know how the IBIS thing goes as it will be a 70-700mm lens on that!

I keep my GH5 + lenses in a drawer and it's pretty tightly packed in there, and I keep pulling out the 135mm or 200mm, using them, then wondering why they won't fit back in the drawer. Then I have that "ah ha" moment where I set them back to infinity focus and put them back, then I have that "oh dear" moment when I realise I do that every time and still don't remember.. ???

It travels compact but expands rapidly! Its f3.5-5.6 so it benefits from being on a speedbooster but its perfectly serviceable without. No IS but I wouldn't be shooting handheld with it anyway. After a bit of haggling I got it for £350 if I remember rightly.

  34. Non-techie types do like using their phones, but "there is no zoom" is also something non-techie types who have a bit of interest in photography understand and care about. Don't confuse people not knowing about cameras or tech with people not knowing about what makes a good image or what they like. We are drowning in photos and video and therefore live in the most visually literate time in all of human history. When in doubt, go for usability and durability, then just tell them to shoot everything and not worry about the camera.

  36. how a camera you use professionaly isn't adequate for holiday photos and videos?! Do not waste any more money. The a6000 is good if they want 1080p (and they should) and the other if they shoot 4K. Use the PZ or the 18-105. They certainly are small cameras - which is good for travel, and they will shoot short videos, do not see overheating being an issue for not critical work. As you put it, these cameras do not even worth 450$! And they probably do not. The a6300 is 670€ new here.

  37. For all of the specs that you are after @Mark Romero 2 at that price point, its difficult to look beyond the FZ1000. If you can up the budget and hunt around for a deal then a used FZ2000/2500 might be a good route because of the internal ND. If you don't mind losing the mic input then Panasonic do compact form factor versions of their 1" cameras (TS100/TZ100) which might be more appropriate for travel (the FZ hybrids are pretty bulky) that also have the touch screen option. They can also be persuaded to shoot in Cinelike D if you know the right people The Olympus is a good option if you can budget for the lens but again you will lose the mic input. An alternative to the Olympus if you were OK with going with an interchangeable lens system would be a used G80/85 that you could get for just above the budget and would get the mic input, IBIS and also an articulating screen which might be important if your son wants to do vlogging/selfie stuff. A completely left field suggestion would be the Insta360 OneX as it really is a great travel video camera option in my opinion if, as has been suggested, the bulk the stills shooting will end up being done with a cellphone. With a bit of shopping around you get one of those and a used Panasonic LX100 which would be a great combo if more serious shooting is also required.

Always good to snag a bargain! I've never actually owned an FD mount lens though I do own an adapter that I'd bought in advance when I was supposed to be buying one but the deal fell through . Was it by chance a 135mm version that I was supposed to be buying ?

@BTM_Pix yeah I thought the same thing and asked him over in the Magic Lantern forum. In the US, there’s a company called Simmod that offers a full Cine mod for FD Lenses using Ed Mika adapters so if all looks okay with the lens, I’ll send it their way. I may have to charge up the batteries on my EOS-M to test out the lens... maybe I’ll give the new experimental EOS-M build a test while I’m at it. Btw even with the cost of the mod, I’ll be cheaper than what most versions of the lens sell for on eBay... by a good bit actually.

  41. You probably won't have to convince her... don't be surprised if they come back with mostly S7 pics & vids regardless of what camera you send. Might consider spending the $ to upgrade the phone vs. getting a camera.

  42. The three flavors of Reid's Z-log has decidedly more dynamic range than Nikon's internal flat profile...a lot more. And they're easy to grade, with lovely LUTS. When you can't shoot N-Log and need the dynamic range I think this is the way to go. I really love the Z6--fun to shoot with great stabilization, lovely image, kick-butt dynamic range.

  43. Internal ND's are a must. Would be nice if they threw in an SD card slot as well for lower bitrate recording. The awesome thing about this camera is the recording options. RAW as well as H264 and H265, and Prores(I assume they will put in Prores as well?) 4k 120fps would have been a really smart move even if it means making the camera larger.

  44. I find it kinda weird, that no amount of lenses, chips, processing and firmware make phone videos look less.. like phone videos. I mean that Parker's video is beautifully shot with some gorgeous landscapes but it still looks like a phone video. I don't even know why.. maybe it's the oversharpening but I feel like there's more to it.

  45. I have no idea which brand has the worst, but I've seen fanboys for every brand/camera. Honestly, it doesn't matter who's worse because being a fanboy is insanely dumb no matter how you slice it. I'll use whatever I can afford and whatever makes my life easier. I love / hate stuff about pretty much every camera I've owned and used. They are all tools. Some do certain things better/worse than other things. Most of the issues stem from people projecting their own needs and/or preferences onto everyone else. There was a big thread on DVXUSER about GAS, and it went off track into smaller cameras vs larger ones. I (and another in the thread) prefer smaller cameras for run and gun. Others thought we were crazy. No one's wrong, it's just a preference. It's human nature on display, I suppose.

Yep, the last image is because it is not showing in the scan which means that the camera still thinks its connected. Exiting the app through the Close Application in the top right menu ensures that the connection is terminated correctly. There is a v1.11 update that I'll put up tomorrow to filter out non-Blackmagic devices during the scan which helps A) if you are in a very congested public place and B) if your phone scans very slowly as it appears to be the case from looking at some reports of that particular one. I am off to a place that satisfies criteria A this afternoon to test it and it will automatically update your app when its published tomorrow.

  49. I totally agree with what Paul said, keep in mind that's a full frame 6k camera sub 20 000 $ ready To shoot. Only Sony venice and red monstro vv offer that if I'm correct and at a way higher price tag... Like really higher ! I looooove it really. It's so tiny and powerfull, just crazy. Regular ssd's are, usable, low light capable, various mounts with eND, nice color science, and tons of things that are incredible for this size and price. I made a long review with table of contents for french speaking people here :
