  1. I agree that it's not always helpful to get hung up on specs and that ease of use, reliability, feel, ergonomics are more important. Here's my opinion: the EOS R is a dog in this regard. It's not easy to use, it's not reliable and it's not got good ergonomics at all. The crop harms usability because all your videos end up looking different to stills, or you have to use a zoom to compensate for the different FOV, or step backwards yards and completely re-frame. So if you're doing a video/stills hybrid shoot, it's a poor choice. The rolling shutter is a problem for anything that isn't a static subject. Lack of effective 5 axis IBIS hurts it for hand-held video work and the digital version warps and crops even further, on top of more distortion from rolling shutter it is not very natural or organic. Reliability - that top LCD is a serious weak spot. Cracks very easily. The lenses have externally moving elements for focus on the most part - even the expensive 50mm F1.2L R. Dated and noisy, and weather sealing isn't up to professional standards. Switching quickly between video and stills mode is a fiddly chore and Dual Pixel AF is no longer the best especially with the 35mm F1.8 R and 50mm F1.2L R and their grinding moving front elements. Needs lenses with internal focus to work at its best and quietest, which it rarely does. Yes, the image in C-LOG is nice, colour science is good, as is white balance and the codec. Like you I prefer to have an image with no excess digital sharpening and don't mind soft, cinematic 4K that doesn't fatigue your eye when the picture moves. It doesn't lack for detail unless you're a pixel peeper using a chart and not watching the film or content. So the image isn't so much the problem - the rest is. But the E-M1X is a far superior hybrid camera.

    Anamorphic for iphone

I have the Moondog Labs 12.5mm Anamorphic adapter. Been awhile since I’ve shot with it. But here is a quick play I had with it on the iPhone X...

  3. Yeah nobody said video is easy. The big problem is it is Very hard to go out and be good at every aspect of video. My main beef is if the audio sucks in the first 20 seconds I am not watching another frame, good or bad. So what good is an Arri Alexa if you don't know shit about Microphones. I can live with goofy video longer than crappy audio.

  4. Not that the P4K looks bad, but these sharpening halos (easiliy visible in the thumbnail around the jacket even) make the P4K look way less organic than the original BMCC. Was shot in either ProRes or Braw. Cdng doesn't show any of these internal processing issues when sharpening in Resolve is set to 0. Still wondering why BMD joined Panasonic, Sony, Canon (since EOS R) etc...

  5. It might be a nice occasion to compare results of two generations of BM cameras from the same master's DP signature. For me, very hard to judge...

  6. I would have killed for that good of output at your age! 360p and Maybe 1.5MP was the norm, and that was Broadcast spec. Actually it was 360 interlaced to be honest. Progressive was just a dream back then. When I quit my ENG stint it was still 480 output. Most stations were Not going to spend all the money to go 720. Heh, who Needs SD. Nobody had a TV to even see it. I am not too sure they Ever made a Tube TV that was 720? First 720 I ever remember seeing was on like a $10,000.00 Plasma TV. You could fry an egg on the screen. First Plasma TV I ever owned was a 40" one that my wife pitched a bitch about because the electric bill jumped about 20% lol. They are great to own though in the winter. Thing weighed about 75 pounds it seems.

  7. Similar architecture to the Sony-Fuji 100MP medium format sensor? Personally I don't need 100MP stills but the technology is interesting as is all forward progress, it leads to an interesting future and is better than staying the same, otherwise we'd all be shooting 720p and 8MP stills

  8. Look for a R6 ... best of the R cameras ... or an older SL2 ... great viewfinder.

  9. Thanks, it seems to me worth noting - exceptional, yet simple formulation of one point of view valuable for rethinking (being it with or without foundation): unquestionable distinctiveness as quality. I also took a glance to see who is Marie Osmond :)

  11. Exposure is fairly easy with the M6 ... three LED indicators ... under arrow correct dot and over arrow. Even half lit to show close but slight under or over exposure. The meter itself tends to underexpose with wide angle lenses as the predominant area metered is the sky ... so the manual suggests tilting the camera towards the ground to meter then compose normally ... limiting the predominance of the sky's brightness. With practice you will find the sweet spot for most exposures unless a scene is predominantly white or black .... where you need to add a compensation factor. The meter will also be "fooled" by excessive backlight ... so step up to the subject to meter and then step back to compose and shoot. Another suggestion is that grass is a close approximation of middle grey ... just point at the grass to meter then accommodate for any offset light that may skew the exposure. Thorsten Overgaard ... has a decent writeup that may help with using a M camera ... Great camera ... difficulty for you is you can only focus by guess ... as the R adapter does not couple to the rangefinder. So F2 on a Summicron may give you a lot of unfocused shots. With a 24 or 21 at F 5.6 - F 8 you can zone focus and pretty much everything will be acceptable.

  12. After using the EOS R for three weeks straight on a shoot, I started to grow comfortable with it and ended up liking it (for the moist part). Granted, we shot in HD, so the crop wasn't an issue. Image definitely seems soft after shooting with the C200 and GH5 for a couple of years - but adding a bit of sharpening in post helps.. Also moving the focus point with the touchscreen sucks - I missed the joystick way more than I thought it would. The touch bar is terrible and I just ended up locking it. No stabilization was also a bummer as I had gotten used to the GH5 stabilization really helping in gimbal and handheld work. By FAR, the best part of the EOS R is the new variable ND adapter. That is a true game-changer. (Sigma needs to make a drop-in variable ND for L-Mount). Other than that, however, I'm excited for my Panasonic S1 to come in so I can pair it up with my GH5. That's a combo I'm excited about. Also I shoot 90% of my work in 4K, so I'm sure the EOS R would start to drive me crazy with its crop - thought I do own the three good APS-C lenses for EF mount for my C200 (18-35mm, 50-100mm, 17-55mm). -- Really looking forward to see what happens at NAB with the C200 and EOS R, but if things stay the same or just slight upgrades (like C200 gets 8-bit 422...), I may end my half-in, half-out middle ground of Canon & Panasonic and go full Panny. But if Nikon Z6 and Canon EOS R both get raw out, then Panasonic needs to update the S1 faster than July (for V-Log and 10-bit internal) and also get raw out as well.

  13. There are plenty of Leica's (mine included) that have inexpensive non-Leica lenses on them like Voigtlander and 7Artisans to be fair. I suspect there are plenty of us who won't baulk at the vulgarity of a Sigma ART lens given the opportunity.

  14. No one has said anything about that. I suggest you ignore this thread because it's not about criticism. It's about the over representation of Sony users threatening, attacking and bullying anyone who doesn't blindly apologize for Sony's shortcomings and hate all other brands. If you haven't experienced it, good for you. But many have and there is data supporting it. So we wish to discuss it

  17. I dont understand why Panasonic just didnt make a new mount diameter that was simply based on MFT data protocol. Panny could have made this new mount standard in one meeting. Essentially, a full frame ring with MFT data pins. I dont see how the Leica partnership help Lumix at all. What tech does Leica give to Panny? Their lenses are niche and very few people will ever buy them. Sigma?....now THEY are a fantastic partner and absolutely key to making these Panny camera sell. I think Panny only really needed Sigma and any profit sharing could have stayed between two companies instead of being split three ways.

  18. True but that goes for pretty much any camera. Most cameras are offering log now and people think that is the way to go.

  19. On one hand I can assume that a normal person would never buy any SL lens as soon as Sigma propose its optic in L-mount. I mean seriously, $5000 for cheap variable aperture zoom?! https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1192094-REG/leica_11176_vario_elmarit_sl_24_90_f_2_8_4_asph.html/pageID/accessory But then I remember we are talking about Leica and I don't see Leica fanboys buying "vulgar" Sigma lenses...

  21. hey i'm left handed, you make being left handed sound like an impediment you should definitely rush out and buy a bmp4k now, it will improve your dexterity !!. Besides that, there is plenty of great footage shot with other cameras and i reckon there will plenty more great footage shot on other cameras. i'm not trying to sell bm cameras because well, there's no commission in it for me. i do however like stirring the pot every now and then, don't take too much of what i say seriously. If your making birdie movies would not the 2x crop on the p4k get you closer to the action ? i know where your coming from my fitness level sucks as well. I caught some rare bug three years ago which took alot of the fun out of everything, but there are people out there doing it tougher than me so im not complaining. i think the battery life is ok, certainly not spectacular. I tend to turn it off after i take a shot. it fires up in less then five seconds. maybe if i went to a carnival or a zoo i'd want another battery or maybe another solution perhaps still considering, but like anything, you have to work within the limits of what you have got.

  23. You have to remember someone my age has paid their dues on hard to handle, heavy as hell, manual everything, on and on cameras both hobby and Pro in my case. And being a sort of a one eyed bastard, and left handed to boot lol, decent AF sort of helps. And not having to stress out about a lot of stuff that I know makes for a better output, but hell I am running out of time using a light meter to determine exposure etc.. I have better things to do, well really not many, but you get the point. If I carried 7 batteries in my pants pocket I would have maybe a heart attack due to the extra added weight to my already added weight. If I was younger I can wholly see the draw of this camera, but I am more a candidate for the Osmo Pocket lol to be honest. I am in Largo, Florida now, made if without incident thank God, and going to get back to birding. I don't see that camera, the BMPCC 4K a good fit for that. But I can see the long term potential for you guys using it. A fabulous tool for the money now that BMD Raw is out. When they get on the used market cheaper if I live that long than I may give it a hard look..

  25. Oh for fuck's sake Andrew. Your post somehow made it to my newsfeed titled "EOS R Getting External RAW Recording". Canon will never give the EOS R that ability. It's not part of the Cine lineup. Be happy with Canon LOG.

  27. dang dude nice work! If you do one for the XT3 I'll definitely consider it. If it matches well with the GH5 it would be a great way to use both cameras without worrying about color matching.

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

I have tried converting to Ari log from flog also and I don’t which I like better. There are differences but I’m just trying to see how close to the original process I can get until the official Xt3 version comes out. At the end of the day, I guess it’s whatever looks good to your preferences. Thanks guys.

  30. Pictures of the Tilta F970 Battery Baseplate fitted to the Tilta Cage. You can use the Batery Baseplate fixed directly to the bottom of the camera without the cage. It provides 7.4v and 12v outputs. With a fully charged pattern NP 970 7800 mAh battery using the 7.4v output I am getting 1hr 35mins of continuous 4k Prores recording to the external SSD.

  31. It looks basically exactly the same lol Same fringing same sharpening halos same noise reduction Since the ARRI Alexa doesn't have sharpening halos when shooting ProRes, nor my exported ProRes footage does and Braw and ProRes on this camera look exactly the same on the P4K I really don't think so. Really didn't switch from the GH5 to the P4K for BMD to apply even more noise reduction aka texture reducer than Panasonic...
