The Canon 35mm f/2 was brought up in another thread, coincidentally I used that lens yesterday, so I figured I’d post a couple grabs...

  2. Magic Lantern have hacked the Canon M50 today, in a surprise move, since it was previously thought Canon had blocked the M50 from loading any scripts. Features of the first version of Magic Lantern for the M50 dubbed "Hello World" include 6K RAW video (using pixel binning) and animated wallpapers. Read the full article

  3. For stills, DPAF, Sony, Nikon all use phase detection that cause banding issues under certain lighting environment or raise the shadow. This may or may not matter for video, but it's a concern for me since I primarily shoot stills. I've seen in various group and forum that show those artifacts make it unusable. This happens in EOS R, Sony A7/R, Nikon Z series camera. Sony A9 is the only one that doesn't exhibit this with the fast read out. It's rare occurrence but it does happens. The easy way is to follow the pack and adopt PDAF at the expense of image quality. They won't ridicule on the net anymore. I actually think it's bold of them to adopt a non compromise approach to image quality and go against standard practice. They are constantly attack for their choice in sticking with DFD. Despite all these ridicule, I found the latest version 1 FW AF to be usable. There is no pulsating and it's fast. It focus really fast in low light and track well enough for non sport activity. If you are using it for photo, it's a non issue while have no banding issues. Sure the AF may not be the best, but it's more than usable since it's combination of features is the closest to being a perfect camera for me. It's also one camera I've been the most excited for. I've been a Canon users only for 10 years that was interested in Sony A7III, A7RIII, A9 etc. All those camera has compromises in some way that goes beyond features. Panasonic S1: Class leading EVF 5.76 million dot 120 hz Dual IS (class leading IBIS FF 6 stops) Dual card slot (first dual XQD/CFE & SD card slot combo) 4K 60 30 cropped (1st FF to offer it) | unlimited 4K 30p EyeAF and animal tracking Ergonomic and weather sealing with button logically lay out Fully touch screen LCD Back lit buttons Focus bracketing High resolution mode 96 mpx and 187 mpx for 47 mpx sensor. Timelapse Fully touch screen LCD Dynamic range beat Fuji medium format, Z6, A7III, A7RIII at low ISO with clean ISO 12,800. For a $2500 S1 camera with free battery and grip, Panasonic offer a lot of class leading features. I can forgive it for not having the best AF. I'm sure they are working on FW to get it even better. This is their first FF mirrror less camera and it shows they really tried. I have no problem supporting a camera company that gave me such a bang for my money. There is no perfect camera, but what you are willing to compromise on. This come the closest perfect camera for me.

  4. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Most of us love the underdog - I hope they pull it off.

  5. I am just saying you do not have to go to great extents to "defend" these cameras because you are loosing "credibility". We all agree that modern cameras are good enough for most things, trying to stretch your (ours) logic to make it seem better than it is, is a futile excersice to abnormality. These 2 R cameras are their worst in class. Be happy using them, but there are better solutions out there for almost everyone. I own already a camera with better ergononics, better menu system, un breakable top screen, Fn functions on lenses and already amazing color science, and it is called NX1..but that was 5 years ago..

  6. I don't know but I prefer the look of the new bmpcc4k in your clip. I used to have a BMPCC and to be honest I would be happy with either of them. But side by side like that, I would take the new bmpcc4k. On a side note, tried some vertical filming the other day.

  7. heyyy guize ? so, i live on a mountain now, and my usual method of using craigslist and meeting someone in person to sell camera gear is not an option unless i wanna drive a loooong way i threw my perfect used condition 24-105 up on ebay for $480, thinking that was a no brainer, and there were no bids! then i put it up again, and at the last minute someone bid on it and won. he contacted me and was like YOU MUST GET TO A UPS STORE TONIGHT. MY WIFE NEEDS THE LENS IN TEXAS TOMORROW and i was like holy s is this ebrahim??? so that was a scam lol

  8. Latest firmware on G9 and Gh5s and newer Panasonic lenses has useable AF for most gimbal shots, vlogging, and run and gun stuff. You also have a built in controlled focus puller on GH line for the precision or planned out shots. Its biggest weakness is Christmas lights and shallow depth of field in my experience. Most other bigger or diffused light emitters don’t show the pulsing of the contrast AF as much. Panasonic is going to have to up their game with the S1 series if they are committing to DfD in future cameras. I always thought that with advanced dedicated AF chip (like in the S1) and some advanced motion tracking predictions that could make DfD compelling.

  9. I've used the GH5 with its latest firmware update that was specifically focused on AF, and with the 12mm f1.4, 12-60mm, and 42.5mm f1.2, I thought the autofocus did great - didn't notice a huge difference from the EOS R. Granted, most of my AF stuff is pretty simple (pushing into a subject on glidetrack, interviews, and walk and talk gimbal shots), but still the type of shots that I would think most people use AF for. 90% of my AF usage is on a gimbal.

  10. Yup. There are two cockwombles involved here. One is Gannon at DPReview who wrote the original news article the other is whoever wrote that rumours headline because nowhere in the PDF or Leica info does it mention the MC-21 adapter!! I am trying to clarify things with Panasonic and will see what the real story is here. Confusion reigns supreme!

  11. I've seen some amazing video done with Panasonic S1. I don't think the AF is an issue unless you track sport movement. It's more than enough for most people need. This camera has more features than my skills.

  12. I agree its a great camera especially for their first full frame. I can understand it from a photography perspective but for their video centered GH cameras they really need to get on the phase detect band wagon.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate that! The funny thing is, this is probably the least amount of work I’ve put into a grade in a while... no LUTs or CST... just saturation and curves.

  17. I also have a6500 and I get the colors but many times I need more ISO and here is where the colors fail me. With GH5S this does not happen to me at high ISO but the sensor covers me insufficiently. At the moment what has failed me with the colors are the lenses, less the APOs.

  19. DJI Mavic Pro 2 D-LOG Cinematic Color Grade (4K). Grade based on my own LUT with some contrast and highlight mods. Overall, pretty impressed with the image quality. Holds up well to heavy color grading. Kudos to filmmaker @Emmanuel Pampuri for capturing these cinematic shots.

  20. You're looking at spending thousands of dollars to use your existing lenses instead of spending a thousand or less getting the right lens for your GH5s. I would question the logic of that decision. There are wide and fast lenses available for MFT, people don't talk about them much because they're expensive, but they're cheaper than buying a brand new flagship camera body. Plus they'll hold their value longer. What are your specific needs? You talk about "best color HD" because you "lose angle in my lenses". It sounds like you just need a wide designed for MFT with little CA to match your APO lenses.

  21. I'm not surprised. The P4K has great colour science, but zebras have no colour so they're not compatible. I think to shoot zebras you have to be a black-and-white thinker. Maybe having a DPreview account would help?

  24. ..And I'm amazed by the backlash against anybody that is ok shooting a Canon camera.. Nobody ever claimed it was the best camera out there.. I even specifically said if you are a 4K only shooter, it is probably among the worst. But yes some people may use it mainly as a FF photography tool, others may shoot FF HD, 4K on gimbals/sticks, or as a B-cam to a 1DX2/C100/200..etc Yes these cases do exist, and for those who use it like that, its a logical choice. Now do I wish it had a global shutter with 10-bit 4:2:2 internal and 4K120p? Sure but it doesn't so you kinda work around it.. the ergonomics, color science, codec, AF, lens lineup are usually what draw people to Canon in the first place. The limitations of EOS R have been spoken to death since launch, I don't really understand the need to repeat them ad nauseam every other post of any Canon related news. Its like Groundhog Day... can't we ever try and focus on anything positive around here? External raw is the topic of the day..

  25. I’ve owned all those cameras... I still own the C200 and do not miss the rest. There is really one major reason I prefer the EOS R to the other hybrids... I prefer the image.

  28. I remember the days when the GH1/GH2 were new. Particularly with the GH2, it kinda flew under the radar for a while and despite it being (in my view) superior to a lot of the Canon offerings at the time, no one paid much attention to it. You'd never really see them out in the wild, and half the people I encountered didn't even know what it was. There was definitely a bit of hostility in the GH2 community, probably from always have to explain/defend your choice. Funny how times change, Panasonic is arguably the most mainstream DSLR brand now.

  29. Here's an example https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z1obV0aGFIf6iDajr9ScTdIoApVOMOSn/view Q0 looks better but still cannot compete with cDNG. cDNG at 4:1 may show macro blocking though when pushed too hard. But at 3:1 it's usually clean.

  31. LOL, people are still think half a stop DR or Low light or more megapixel are going to make their work masterpieces. We have 6k sensor doing 4k images in $ 2000 camera and people are still wasting their times on these.

  34. You’re over complicating this. You have a camera - use it to generate your video footage. Edit and tell your story. I suggested a short with the title “My Town” - any progress? Night or day? Fast or slow paced? Music? Monochrome or vivid? People or places? Positive or negative? Handheld or tripod? Those are all decisions you need to make. And you are in a position to make. So make them! I look forward to see what you produce. (Thinking about it I realise that if I set myself the challenge - to produce a short called “My Town” - I’m not sure I’d know where to start!)

  35. I dont understand why Panasonic just didnt make a new mount diameter that was simply based on MFT data protocol. Panny could have made this new mount standard in one meeting. Essentially, a full frame ring with MFT data pins. I dont see how the Leica partnership help Lumix at all. What tech does Leica give to Panny? Their lenses are niche and very few people will ever buy them. Sigma?....now THEY are a fantastic partner and absolutely key to making these Panny camera sell. I think Panny only really needed Sigma and any profit sharing could have stayed between two companies instead of being split three ways.

  36. Not that the P4K looks bad, but these sharpening halos (easiliy visible in the thumbnail around the jacket even) make the P4K look way less organic than the original BMCC. Was shot in either ProRes or Braw. Cdng doesn't show any of these internal processing issues when sharpening in Resolve is set to 0. Still wondering why BMD joined Panasonic, Sony, Canon (since EOS R) etc...

  37. The Panasonic S1 does have all of that now. It's sort of weird how much people have been ripping on the S1 - No, it's not a full-frame GH5, but with the upcoming V-Log/10-bit update, it's pretty darn close. Every other manufacturer gives us internal 8-bit 420 (Sony, Nikon, Canon), big crops (Canon), no 60 fps (everyone), etc. Add on that Panasonic has the best ergonomics for video by far (in my opinion) and a great XLR adapter, and you have a very capable camera.

  38. IBIS ✔️ FF 4k ✔️ 10-bit internal ✔️ 120p 1080p ✔️ 4K 60p ✔️ In a mirrorless body under $4,000 ✔️ Well the Panasonic S1 has ALL of those requirements and ships in less than a week....

  39. Another question is when will any camera manufacturer give you those specs? Probably not for a long time. And when they do it's probably some h.265 crap. It sounds like it's time to graduate from messing with stills cameras and getting a real video camera. Won't be FF though.
