Really excited to see what everyone thinks of our new video! We shot this mainly with an A7iii an A7sii and a GH5. Mavic pro 2 of course. Let me know!

  2. Z-Cam is a company that is going to disrupt some concepts in the cinema camera industry. After NAB, there should be some insight for many cinematographers on what gear to invest in. Z-Cam and their offerings will be on the short list for these individuals, including myself.

  3. Magic Lantern have hacked the Canon M50 today, in a surprise move, since it was previously thought Canon had blocked the M50 from loading any scripts. Features of the first version of Magic Lantern for the M50 dubbed "Hello World" include 6K RAW video (using pixel binning) and animated wallpapers. Read the full article

  5. Of course, but I am talking further into the future! I can predict that in 10-20 years from now, you could be able to buy all the components from ebay, and 3D print and manufacture your own digital camera at home. 2-3 years is nothing for what we have in front of us!

  6. People are putting too much faith in Canon and Sony. The smaller companies will revolutionize the products and processes of next decades (and the generation Alpha). BM can print a body, put a sensor and some chips and make a 1400$ raw 5" monitor camera, while established companies with huge capitals need 4 to 6 times the money for similar, or worst, performance. The A7Siii will probably be a better camera than the P4K, but for how much? And when? I say, the future is now, and it is happening from small companies. P.S don't you think that an SDI output and an ND filter for 5.000$€£ is too much?!

  7. Don't they have the 4K S35 camera also for October/November release? Their current m43 one is too knew also, definitely they need resources for firmware upgrades and bugs e.t.c It takes almost 2 or more years for Canon (still waiting for that C100mkIII!)/Sony to produce a cine/video camera, it is amazing if the Z cam do 3 and a half in one..

  9. They are using the same bodies and systems etc. I have faith, they are making huge leaps all the time. People said Prores would never happen, yet they have delivered and are about to release a new firmware with Raw, HLG and some other goodies. I don't know how they do it, but they do. I recently purchased an E2 and I'm really impressed, for the money it's amazing, even if they changed nothing from this point I'd still be satisfied I got my monies worth.

  10. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Most of us love the underdog - I hope they pull it off.

  11. It sounds like you are very sensitive to colour rendition, I can understand because you're using colour more as a scientific instrument rather than aesthetic for entertainment. In this case, I'd be worried that changing camera would change the colours - camera brands have colour differences much greater than individual lenses. Maybe try to rent the camera bodies before you commit to buying - it would be better to find out if they're going to work before you pay retail price for one!

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Sure; it depends on what you'd like. Fuji and BMD have very good, usable color. I personally will use P4K with GH5; I hope to have EC to do a production this summer. 8 bit is tricky; I'd prefer to only support 10 bit cameras, though I will try to find a way that will give viable production level results with 8-bit. I think Log is not really in the cards there. Bit of really cool news; last weekend, the director of a film starring Josh Hartnett wrote to me to say that they were using the GH5 with EC as a pick-up cam alongside Alexa Minis and XTs. He said that a senior Star Wars colorist was doing the grade, and said that 'everybody was very impressed' with it. I was pretty thrilled with that

    Sharp's new 8K M43 camera

Sharp officially joins m4/3. I expect we will see more details at NAB https://www.olympus-global.com/news/2019/contents/nr01198/nr01198_00001.pdf

  17. So what you are saying is that if someone made a smart remote record controller that, amongst other features, knew what mode you were in in picture mode and automatically switched to that mode and THEN put it in record then someone who made such a device might find themselves with a market for it ?
    1 point
  18. I already said it first a day ago and again now. I also said it in the review. Set C3 with 4K & Canon LOG, hit record. But it won't maintain the mode you are in at that moment for stills... it will go to whatever mode you saved to the C3 preset. Canon messed the usability up of the one simple thing that people liked about their DSLRs... A simple stills/movie mode lever and movie exposure following exactly what is selected for stills and on the mode dial. The Sigma is sharper wide open but the FD 1.2 holds its own stopped down, especially colour and contrast... And of course wide open it has the wonder F1.2 look, remaining sharper than the less expensive FD lenses at F1.4.

  19. Yeah but it can be had pretty cheap used and as long as I am using traditional lighting setups or shooting during the day it would be fine. I do realize that but after seeing the footage from the new global shutter Z cam I am sold haha.

  20. I believe that the sensor inside the pocket 4k is from Sony , the same as GH5s and Terra4k and E2. They might be slow at releasing their own products, but they are the ones driving innovation. Without Sony/Panasonic ( and soon Samsung ) making affordable component available to small companies, those company would not even be able to make digital cameras. In the sensor technology world, Sony is two years ahead of pretty much everyone else ( I m not making this up, you can have a look online).

  21. Not sure sony would release something that will wipe their FS5/FS7 line of the table.

  23. I find that ebay generally works quite well for me. I ignore virtually all questions as the folks that ask all the questions rarely purchase. I also just set a buy it now price as I've burned myself on auctions with stuff going for a ridiculously low price. Just make sure you set your restrictions which for me is anyone not in the UK or EU. Generally, if it's a fairly mainstream item, it should sell quite quickly, - I find it's the stuff I found tricky to find to purchase that doesn't sell so well. As an example, I bought a Ninja V but it didn't work out for me and as I was outside the 30 day return period, I stuck it on ebay with a BIN price very close to purchase and it sold within 24 hours. Which always makes me wish I'd asked a bit more, but there you go!

  24. Well if the FF6K turns out to be a mavo LF for half the money, its gonna sell like hotcakes.

  27. This dead system is equal or better than Canon mirrorless systems (2 of those by the way), 3 years after its "demise" and for a wee tiny portion of the money you need to build something similar on R. Even the 4K crop is less.. Go figure.. P.S we don't put anyone down, when - for a rather expensive camera - you do not care about a HUGE crop factor, the just limited native lens options, sub par ergonomics (for a Canon), an unusual high price (yeah, again), one of the highest RS then maybe you under value the argument. And who is really "trolling"? Someone who states the facts, like @Andrew Reid did, and I agreed? Or someone that "lowers the standards of the earth", so to make a sub par camera look amazing (Bill Hicks line from the Vanilla Ice scetch!).

  28. All these cameras share a lot in common, the main thing is switching out the sensors, it's not as though they are designing totally new cameras from scratch. It's amazing really that camera companies have somehow convinced us all that this type of thing takes years to do... Hats off to Zcam shaking things up.

  29. They’re planning to release 5 cameras in 2019: E2 C E2 GS E2 S35 6K E2 FF 6K E2 FF 8K Canon and Sony are slow, old, behemoths. Literally dumpster fires of money. They need to sell 10,000x units to make a penny. Being a tiny company in China you could stay afloat selling 500 cameras a year. Their government basically subsidizes industry with cheap loans and no cost shipping.

  30. I've got 7 cine-cat videos at picture-lock but i'm still perfecting the grade. I've got about 53 nodes in Resolve across the final timeline, but I just can't get it to be cinematic enough. I thought that any camera that shoots 4K120 came with a basket of kittens? Or maybe it was just a multi-year promotion that I saw that has now lapsed? It's hard to keep up. I think the general idea is that if your production is using a cine camera (which requires a number of crew to successfully operate and is big and heavy) then your production will have enough people and sufficiently limited portability that you can use artificial lighting and not require low-light performance. Even in scenes that are shot in 'low light' such as external street shots or whatever would get enough light because you'd build a set for it. My impression is that large productions typically spend a very low percentage of their budget on the camera, and it's only smaller productions that have this as being a significant cost. In this sense, a cinema camera is actually a camera for a completely different type of film, rather than it being the same but just nicer quality. [edit: or they would just shoot day-for-night where they shoot during the day and change the shots in post to look like they're shot at night]

  31. Strange how people can't just move on from Canon. You keep expecting more and more from them, they never deliver, and then you keep asking "when?!" Even if they did, in the not so distant future, provide exactly what you wanted, why reward them after all of this?
    1 point
  32. Yeah it would appear as of late a lot of people have been paying a lot of money for a brand name more than hardware cost.

  37. I'm not sure if you're kidding, but I see nothing wrong with using a C700 for cat videos. I wonder if Roger Deakins and Janusz secretly shoot cat videos. I'd love to see them. Probably would be their most honest work. I bet most Red owners/cat owners are shooting cat videos. They'd be crazy not to.

  38. Really? I only find any slight differences if any. To me braw has been a disappointment for a simple reason... because of CinemaDNG's IQ standard. The fact we have one or another doesn't help either.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate that! The funny thing is, this is probably the least amount of work I’ve put into a grade in a while... no LUTs or CST... just saturation and curves.

The Canon 35mm f/2 was brought up in another thread, coincidentally I used that lens yesterday, so I figured I’d post a couple grabs...

  41. The workaround I use is to have a manual aperture lens mounted, and then go to shutter priority mode. This way you control the aperture on the lens, shutter on the camera and set the ISO to auto. Unfortunately this doesn't work with any of native lenses

  45. I remember the days when the GH1/GH2 were new. Particularly with the GH2, it kinda flew under the radar for a while and despite it being (in my view) superior to a lot of the Canon offerings at the time, no one paid much attention to it. You'd never really see them out in the wild, and half the people I encountered didn't even know what it was. There was definitely a bit of hostility in the GH2 community, probably from always have to explain/defend your choice. Funny how times change, Panasonic is arguably the most mainstream DSLR brand now.

@Andrew Reid I think I remember reading that you have the Canon FD 50mm 1.2 L converted to EF? I just bought one for a song and was wondering if you’ve used it with your 5D3 and ML Raw?
