Yes, ironically, it seems that works that are involving highest level of man's knowledge will suffer the most. But, it would be simply great, if such liberation will be followed with more space for creativity... Alas, I see quite contrary - for example, just few days ago I spent a day with nice operative board stuff (DP, director, production manager etc) from most powerful movie/video producing house in my country, between lines trying to provide more interests for some artsy movie under mine conducting. Experience was pretty sad - they have, I quote from portfolio: "Cameras ( Phantom Flex, ARRI Alexa LF, Alexa SXT, Alexa Mini...), Lenses (Master Anamorphics, Signature Primes, Kowa Anamorphics, Cooke S4i, Super Baltars,ARRI UltraPrimes, ARRI Master Primes, ARRI CompactPrimes, ARRI Alura Zooms, ARRI Master Macro, Optimo zooms etc...)", but for ideas, vision, for any sort of metaphysics spark or goals they simply have no neither time, neither - it seems - any profound need. How bizarre moment in history: all superhuman instruments at disposal - around ultimate banality and emptiness in human mind...2 points -

You know, I almost posted in that topic about Race to the Bottom about how the economic value of our work as filmmakers is falling because of advanced software, and will be completely obsoleted by machine learning within a few decades. The truth is that once an algorithm is developed--whether by traditional coding, or machine learning--it costs $0 to duplicate it globally. (Patents and lawsuits make it cost money, but those are legal fees, not the actual cost of the algorithm the way that you must continue to pay a human worker because they will stop working if they aren't paid.) Every single person who makes money rotoscoping, motion tracking, or really ANY job can be put out of work by an algorithm overnight. Those jobs will exist until the day it's lights out, and we really need to have the foresight to do something about changing the way we think about the value of labor, before the disaster point. The scary part is the vast majority of political leaders seem to have no concept of the massive change to our economic structure that machine learning will bring in the next few years.2 points -

"Timeline level resolution, frame rate, scaling and monitoring settings within the same project" FINALLY. It's one of those things that wasn't a dealbreaker, but was annoying for a few specific projects. "Adjustment Clips to apply filters, effects and grades on top of a range of timeline clips" Nice. One of the main things I miss from Premiere. "Improved Fusion playback performance" That's been my main complaint against Fusion's integration vs. Fusion standalone--glad to see improvements in performance. "ResolveFX Object Removal in DaVinci Resolve Studio" Really looking forward to trying this out. "ResolveFX Vignette" I could have used this on one or two projects in the past, glad to see it. "Playback speed indicators in Resolve viewers" Cool! This will help with creating speed ramps. "Support for using DaVinci Resolve Studio dongles to enable Fusion Studio" WHAT? This is AWESOME! I'm so glad I never bought a Fusion dongle now haha. It doesn't look like they have added support for FLog in the color space transform. That would be a nice addition for Fuji users. Though, to be fair, I've found HLG to be better than FLog on the XT3 so I probably wouldn't use it that often.2 points -

Lookout Avid and Adobe and any other company who's name starts with "A" and that makes video editing software - Grant and Blackmagic have kicked you right in the subscription. The 2 other leading companies that don't have to rely on video editing subscription software sales model are Apple and Blackmagic and what do they have in common? They make a broad range for hardware products (including prosumer product - the Pocket 4k) so they can sell at volume and afford to sell their software for a one-time reasonable prices. Apple now sells media subscription services and may someday go the subscription route for their software as well. Potentially, that leaves Blackmagic in the future, as the only widely adopted professional video editing software company that is not forced to beg its customers for a subscription like the little kid nextdoor trying sell you magazine subscriptions to help fund school activities and when a prize in the process. Blackmagic has my respect for not begging for my subscription each year and for making a better product than their competition.2 points -
NAB 2019 predictions and major talking points - BMPCC 4K Pro anyone?!

Yep, $395 was pretty much in the ballpark of where I thought it was going to be. I'm hoping that showing it this early was a bit of a kite flying exercise to gauge demand and test that price and it might come down. There is an argument for it being more compact, or a more compact version of it at least as well. I absolutely agree and I am of course all about physical hardware controllers wherever possible. In my view, I actually think that far from being a specialised tool it should actually be a mainstream one but its going to have to be a lot cheaper than that. The controller will, I would surmise, be a proprietary protocol like their other panels so 3rd party keyboard/jog wheel solutions will get close but not be able to have direct access to all of the functions, particularly the simultaneous two function controls as demonstrated?2 points

I agree - bringing people into their ecosystem is likely to be their long-term vision. Amazon and Apple realised this long ago. Lots of profit to be made from taking the Hotel California style of customer relationship, where "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" It works for religion too, by excommunicating people who want to leave you raise the price of switching above what most people are willing to tolerate..2 points -

I can legally buy them from anyone selling them, whether it's off eBay or a dude off the street. As long as they're not stolen, it's legal. You might be expecting too much out of America, a country where private sales of guns is pretty much completely unregulated. There aren't a lot of jobs in the United States that require licensing. Most would be in the medical field. I mean shit, we elected a president that's a complete racist moron. The bar is pretty low in general here, in both good and bad ways, when it comes to job qualifications.2 points -

You need a license to be a photographer in some countries? That's insane. I live in a nanny state, but even here you can earn up to €1000 tax free legally as a hobby photographer, and up to €5000 before you have to start paying VAT. Above that you start paying VAT as well, but there is still not any kind of licenses. And you have to have a physical space as well? Where is this? It's perfectly legal to run a business from your home in Norway (where I'm from). Photography is not exactly bridge building or heart surgery.2 points -

Level of integration of AI and machine learning in today's high end softwares looks to me unbelievable and almost scary. Yet not in Fusion, but it seems just matter of time when F. will also incorporate possibility of AI software-driven 3d data from moving footage! So, all the knowledge and hours and hours of extremely tedious learning curve (also mine) needed for simulate-recreate 3D space from 2D footage very soon will be past. Or, even not soon, but now starting, as it seems from new Flame 2020 promo... https://digitalmediaworld.tv/vfx/2340-autodesk-flame-2020-accelerates-vfx-workflows-with-machine-learning (In its simplest application for, say, cinematography, just imagine what does it mean for simple background blur manipulation... )1 point -

I don't think they're hot swap-able, but you can charge them through the 12v input. So you could have the grip and sled with a bigger NPF battery on and you'll be able to go for like half a day, then hotswap the battery on the sled if need be. Kind of the same as it currently stands with the LPE6, but with MUCH more backup. From their website: Designed for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, the new Pocket Battery Grip lets you replace the camera’s standard LP‑E6 battery with two L‑series batteries so you can shoot for over 2 hours on a single charge! You can even charge the batteries in the grip via the camera’s 12V DC connection in between takes! -- I think the grip would be great for travel stuff where you don't want extra cables etc. I'll definitely grab one, but in a few months when some 3rd parties have solutions.1 point

Especially when the non-locking part of the system is in someone's pocket... And they're likely not as technically minded as the camera/audio crew.... and they don't know/care about the weaknesses of the gear... or how the equipment is set up... and they're mid conversation in an interview. All of that is also the reason why I use wires and a boom mic as much as I possibly can. I want to keep any potential errors, technical or otherwise away from people with no idea, and in the hands of people who can quickly solve them. Having you USB drive dangling out of your camera while you're filming is silly, but at least as the operator who's set everything up, you're aware of what the consequences could be and know how to best manage things to avoid those consequences. The talent wearing a wireless mic has no idea.1 point

I'd be quite excited by an update to their stabilisation engine. I shoot hand-held almost exclusively, and the combination of the GH5 IBIS and Resolve stabilisation does a great job already, but I suspect that the stabilisation engine has far more potential than the current interface allows. I'd especially like the ability to control zoom/pan/tilt/roll independently, for example if I do a hand-held horizontal pan I want to eliminate rotation and tilt completely but smooth the pan motion only a little so it keeps a steadier pace. Unfortunately you can't currently do this (or I haven't worked out how yet!) because you can't have stabilisation occurring in more than one node in series - at least the last time I checked each node you try and stabilise does its analysis on the unprocessed file, sort of ignoring the previous nodes that should already have been applied. Using an external monitor without their cards would also be lovely, but considering they essentially have a captive audience I'm not sure how likely that is!1 point

I voted for Raw recording on the R
webrunner5 reacted to Kisaha for a topic
maybe you should wait for the professional R camera, or the C100mkIII which should be here relatively soon. If you can't wait, then another R. If you feel lucky, go for a C200, it is what a C100mkIII should have been, but with Raw lite and 5/3 of the cost. In my opinion all these tools (R, C100mkII, C200) are way overpriced for what they do in 2019, but if you want to go Canon, these are the only options.1 point -

That is why if you want to go Pro you better go BIG time Pro mode. When you are in business, I don't care what it is you have to make a Ton of money to make it worth the effort. Hiring an Accountant here is almost a must because you have to pay out every month for Workman's Comp, Social Security, Insurance, any kind of benefits like healthcare, pensions, profit sharing, on and on. So you can't do that alone. That adds up to an amazing amount of money if you have employees. Add wages, and city, state and federal taxes, and rent or a mortgage on a building and add equipment, insurance for all of it in the mix and you had better be pulling in some serious money. Most people are WAY better off just Moonlighting and keeping their day job. Here you don't get any credits for Social Security when you are self employed for the years you are. That can bite you in the ass when you retire big time. And the trouble is it takes more luck than anything, right place right time, to even luck into a really good successful business over the long haul. I have had 3 pretty big time businesses in my life and it was an amazing amount of time and hard work, and overall I am not too sure it would not have been easier to just had worked for someone else. Let them fall over dead worrying about it lol. The problem is it all takes Way too much time away form your family to be in business for yourself when you look back at it. And you can Never get that time back, never. That is my biggest regret looking back. I think most people, me included, just make their life Way too complicated. Less is more in the long run. Fun and happiness is a rare gift for most, and it is really what we should strive for. But we seem to just keep running in the Rat Race. Pretty crazy way to live a life for all involved. Maybe we all need to just go buy a Canon EOS M with ML in it and be happy..1 point -

I don't see them switching to a subscription model. I imagine they'll continue to offer the software for free, with a "full version" available for $300. I think they're much more interested in attracting more people into their ecosystem than anything, especially if it encourages people to buy their cameras and hardware.1 point -

Yeah, about the monitor on the Pocket4K... As far as I'm concerned, if you plug an external monitor/recorder into it then the usability is undeniably transformed not just from the point of view of visibility outdoors (though this is reason enough where I am) but also by virtue of the articulation making it far more effective for both handheld and low angle shooting. It was never going to have a superbright monitor like an Atomos so that's fair enough but there is no doubt that it could have had an articulating screen to take care of the latter aspect but also go some way to helping with the former one as well in many cases. Does this issue make the Pocket4K a piece of shit that needs throwing into the bin? Of course it doesn't and there are ways around it if you personally need them but those workarounds cost far more in hassle and money than adding a $10 bracket to the integral screen would have done. No one is saying the emperor is naked, and indeed his robes are clearly made of the finest silk, but at the same time its perfectly acceptable to point out that there are parts that are frayed through which you can clearly see his bare arse.1 point

Lumix/GX80 Cinelike D enabler Android App (with on the fly setting changes)
tvsuditalia reacted to LippyLee for a topic
I've spent a day converting the existing GX80 Cinelike-D hack html file into an Android APK. There's an added color temperature function. This app should yield some usability advantages as it allows on the fly changes to the various picture profile settings and contains all settings on a single page. It also saves your last selected settings. Notes on installation: -Allow installation of apps from unknown sources Instructions for use: 1. Connect to your camera's wifi network 2. Start the app 3. Click handshake (ignore any update warnings) 4. Click recmode 5. Change settings before or while filming Other notes: 1. The app may erase existing settings saved in your various picture profiles 2. Camera IP selection is not yet implemented, apologies to those who do not connect to their cameras directly 3. Tested on a G7 Download link: https://github.com/lippyt/lumixlib/raw/master/lumix.apk1 point
