I do think the mid range has been slowly shrinking. There's tons of work at the bottom, probably more than ever. And there's still work at the top. I've learned a few things, finally. Only took almost 9 years! I think a big mistake I made was fretting over and trying to turn cheap people into rich people. Clients who have no money are never gonna pay, no matter how much you convince them of your worth. It's always better to just ignore them and go where the money is. With the bigger clients, I find they almost need a big dog and pony show to make them feel like they're getting a high end production. Big crews, cameras, lights that they probably don't need, but makes them feel secure. There's still really good money in the high end wedding market, if you can stomach it. Just saw a guy in town charging minimum $4500 for a highlight + some multicam ceremony. And he's got hundreds of 5 star reviews. A few days work for $4500! I suspect location matters tremendously. I've been fortunate to live to two big markets. Vancouver, and now DC. DC in particular seems to have lots of rich people. No way I'd be getting anywhere close to the rates I get here in the town I grew up in. That said, cost of living there was substantially less as well. Being a specialist is probably the ticket to big money if you're really fucking good, but have general skills can help at least keep the lights on during slow times. I've played DOP, camera op, editor, motion graphics guy, even photographer at times. My biggest worry by far is AI and robots. Our industry is going to be absolutely gutted at some point, I think people have no idea. People talk about the DSLR revolution changing things....that's absolutely compared to what's gonna happen, IMO.2 points -

Depends on how old you are. A lot of the stuff I mentioned are real things that we can do now. Here's some really interesting things to look into: Many of us have probably already seen this, where they generate a 3D map of the entire soccer match from an array of cameras. That was a tech demo from over a year ago. Here is nice overview of where we currently are with machine learning as it relates to 3D modeling. Includes some links to tools you can go try out right now. In the later half of the video he shows off some text to image generators, and photoreal facial generators. Certainly worth a watch. Speaking of which, there's the amazing deepfake engine. we've already seen the beginning of machine learning creating screenplays or even entire movies. And before you point out that these aren't anywhere near the quality that humans can produce, look at the timeline. According to Wikipedia, deep learning "became feasible" in the 2010's. In 2018, nVidia announced the Turing chips with Tensor cores, which use machine learning for denoising, really the first real integration of machine learning into consumer vocabulary that I have seen. It's used for real time raytracing in video games. Just in the past month, both Adobe and Blackmagic have announced integrating AI into their NLEs. We've barely begun with AI and machine learning. Where do you think we'll be in 20 years? As for your thing about robots taking over jobs, that is exactly right, which is why we need to figure out what an economy that no longer requires human input will look like, before it's too late, which comes full circle back to the original post. What will be the monetary value of work when the end for which that work is a means is unnecessary? Edit: Couldn't resist adding this one: An AI found a glitch in the video game Qbert to get an obscenely high score. In 35 years, no human had found the glitch.1 point -

Pretty interesting video about the newer iPhones, and Smartphones in general. They may actually be better, and in a lot of situations they are better than a high end camera. And not mentioned, video in them also applies a lot of the same mindset. Is the hassle worth it for what small gain at times you achieve over just pure convenience, and arguably a Whole lot more advanced tool to use on paper.1 point -

Almost. Not the greatest at low light (ok At the short end), Terrible battery life (around 200 shots) but great IS for such a long zoom. Limited control but enough. Very nice for the Reall cheap price I got it for.1 point -

Not even in our lifetime. If it gets as far as this we would should be happy, because there would be no jobs left, the robots will be doing all the work. Everybody will get a wager for doing nothing. And we have a lot more time on our hands to enjoy life.1 point -

First of all, a lot of the video/editing jobs aren't art. Analyzing a billion ads and creating something similar for a new product is EXACTLY what machine learning does best. And it's not like it's just a black box--an AI can spit out a dozen, a hundred, or a thousand samples, let a human pick what they like best, and refine, and with each iteration, the machine creates a slightly better algorithm. Instead of hiring a motion graphics artist, a business owner who wants a commercial can just sit down with an AI and pick which ads they like out of a never-ending stream. Second, I disagree entirely. How do human artists work? They build a knowledge of art history, change a few things, and build off of feedback. That is exactly what machine learning does. Instead of C-3PO wandering about shooting a wedding, picture this: A robot scouts the venue ahead of time and sets up a few dozen small cameras to film the wedding from all angles, and then uses those cameras to reconstruct the entire ceremony in 3D. It then picks the best angles based on the knowledge of every single wedding video ever shot, taking into account the satisfaction ratings of the couples (using videos of the couples' faces when they see their video). With each video, it experiments slightly by changing a few things. It composes music for the wedding based on knowing what songs the couple plays, and knowledge of all music ever written. It does all of this by the next morning. No one sees the robots at any stage--completely discrete. With each wedding it shoots, this system improves slightly. And since it's a machine, it can shoot virtually unlimited weddings every day, thus quickly becoming the best wedding videographer on the planet. Obviously this isn't going to happen tomorrow, but there is no way to stop it from becoming a reality in the near future.1 point -

Actually that would be really handy at weddings. One of the big challenges is staying as invisible as possible. A photographer + assistant, 2-3 videographers already starts to look like a circus that's hard to ignore. Several small (presumably quiet) drones would be much less disruptive, and could be operated by one person. Weddings are fairly safe, though. There's always the personal element of knowing the couple and who in their family/friends group is important, and making use of their speeches in the edit. Any editing that requires understanding of language and human social elements will be the most protected. People rag on weddings, but they're a pretty solid way to make a living if you live in a big city. A lot of video production work isn't art, though. The above the line people might be making those decisions, but a lot of it is mechanical grunt work. Think of all the Camera OP/First/2nd AC positions. Those will be bye-bye. Lots of camera op work for live events will easily be replaced by cameras controlled by AI and/or one human. Facebook has already started doing AI generated montages of videos and photos. It won't win awards, but if that's all you need, it gets the job done. A lot of assistant editing/rotoscoping work will be gone. After Effects is already pushing auto-content aware stuff. And once those positions are gone, people will be clamoring for the few jobs that do need humans. It's already a terribly saturated industry, it's only gonna get worse when those jobs shrink.1 point -

might have been a $100 us. However the aussie dollar did an impressive swan dive before i bought it (actually i dont even think the dollar has made back to the surface yet ) so it cost me alot more than that. Original stuff is always worth more i think, be it cars or camera bits. At this point i'm keeping it pristine :) . Been out with the p4k and the Olympus 15mm body cap lens to a local lookout and i quite like it. Maybe that's because a : i don't know any better or b : don't have anything better or c : all of the above ? . has anyone bought a helicoid and inserted either a projector lens or enlarger lens inside it and how did it turn out ? i got to thinking about a helicoid after tuning the el nikor with the m42 extension tube.1 point

I think in a similar vein that an automatic face detection and blurring of anyone but the primary subject function will soon become an important for YouTube bloggers particularly in countries with strong privacy and data protection laws. Takedowns or monetisation grabs based on music copyright is today's thing but facial recognition to do the same either for financial or privacy purposes will become tomorrow's.1 point

New low budget "pro" wireless: Deity Connect
webrunner5 reacted to Kisaha for a topic
Deity in 2 years (will) have all the equipment I gather from 7 brands, that took them years to R&D, and for 3-5 times the money. Sorry for being sceptical about most of those. I am only enthusiastic about their wireless system so far, because indeed, electronics have moved a lot in the last couple of years and you can get better performance for cheaper, but for the rest, I would be more sceptical. I was right in the beginning of their Deity Aputure (back then), when all the youtubers were screaming "416 killer of half the price" when that microphone was nothing like the 416, wasn't even the same internal design or anything. It was an outright lie, to put the 416 in the same sentence with the Aputure Deity back then. The only things in common were the shameful copy of the 416 in resemblance, and that they both are mics! They admitted that, and now I saw they have a 3rd edition of their first mic. There are thousands of people that bought the first two, and in just 13-15 months time they are loosing more value of their purchase! Especially the first one was such a cheap and underperforming design, it was really a same. Also, there are just a few true working sound men of real experience and value (maybe 2 persons) participating in the youtube conversation, so most of the - Aputure influenced - reviews are from the usual "youtubers" crowd, people with little to no real experience with production sound. Instead of buying a new Aputure design every year - until they reach German standards - maybe just buy a good one from a reputable and experienced manufacturer (Audix, BeyerDynamics, AKG, Audio Technica, some Rodes, Neumann, Sennheiser, e.t.c )from the beginning, and let the new players experiment with somebody else's pocket and time.1 point -
That’s not really a comparable lens. The 0.95 is a speciality lens which will excel for low light. It’s a specialised lens for a specific use, just as your 600mm telephoto or macro lens. It’s also a showpiece where Nikon wants to exhibit the state of the art. The coming Z 50/1.2S would be a better comparison. Unfortunately also a large lens. Comparable in size to the Leica 50mm 1.4 SL or the new Panasonic 50mm 1.4. The Z 1.8 primes are incredible and in my opinion a perfect balance between size, cost, build quality and performance. I also really like the look of the new F2 primes for the Leica SL. Out of my price range for sure but very nice design (I mean in terms of handling/performance not looks). Would be cool if the coming non-S lenses are super compact with less resolution but still ok for most uses at an affordable price.1 point

Zoom F6 - game changer?
KnightsFan reacted to kye for a topic
I use dual channel recording all the time. The problem isn't that the F6 isn't great, it's that by comparison, everything else is shit. The F6 could have 4000 bit recording, but if you have a bad signal source then your 4000 bits won't help, because the limitation will be elsewhere in the signal path. Unfortunately, in comparison to the F6, everything is a bad signal source.1 point -
I think you have to patch the input to the track so that when you hit record it knows which input you want to record from. It sounds like you might have already done that, but if so then I'm not sure. This might help?1 point

Because I am of a certain age, in my youth I had a 16mm Bolex which featured a turret containing three Switar primes. You pulled the hinged chrome central stick to one side to use as a leaver and: click-click-click -- you immediately had a different lens in place. I don't miss the dark and dingy view through the prism block, though.1 point -

Stabilization is INCREDIBLE in this version. Lightning fast compared to the old way and Premiere. This alone is worth the upgrade!1 point -
I actually think the battery grip is a decent option to have to keep everything integrated as it were. Adding a bit of weight to the body when you're using adapted FF lenses on it won't be unwelcome from a balance point of view either. Not quite sure how the price can be not far off double a similar Canon one for the same batteries though (which also includes nav/control buttons) let alone against the price of the 3rd party ones. Throws a bit of a spanner (or hacksaw) in the works if you've bought a cage though.1 point

Fuji X-T3 and X-T4 discussion
Kubrickian reacted to austinchimp for a topic
One thing I've discovered - and this might help some people - is that the rendering settings in Premiere can create extreme banding and blotches in your h256 footage once you apply a lut. I had terrible problems with this on my Mac, before I realised I'd accidentally created a sequence with the Metal hardware acceleration setting selected under Project settings. When I changed it to OpenCL, the banding went away completely. Might be something worth playing with. I usually find Software rendering to be the most reliable for quality, albeit by far the slowest.1 point -

NAB 2019 predictions and major talking points - BMPCC 4K Pro anyone?!
IronFilm reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
Love the Blackmagic image but for me, their models come with serious negatives: BMP4k - no tilt screen, crap battery and the unnecessary need to rig for longer shoots. Ursa Mini G2 - just too big and heavy. Wish it was more MAVO or ZCam. I think there will be quite a wait for the ultimate BM camera designs. In terms of NAB, I’d love to see a Ninja Star size recorder to unlock ProRes RAW in all available frame rates.1 point -
I do not care at all about IBIS, but a more ergonomic design and NDs would be amazing for a P4K Pro! I seriously dislike the current form and desing. In my opinion is neither practical/interesting.1 point
