  1. Libel for what? If it is your honest opinion that someone is a cockwomble (for example ) then that's an acceptable defence. In any case, for a company to sue for libel they need to show it is likely to cause serious harm in respect of serious financial loss. I would suggest that the fact that the link between Amazon and that site isn't particularly widely displayed on DPReview (to the extent that its questionable how many of its users are even aware of it) would make it difficult to show cause for serious financial loss to Amazon. https://www.carter-ruck.com/media-law-defamation-libel-and-privacy-lawyers/libel-and-slander-faq By the way, I imagine YOU on the other hand CAN show that THEIR hosting of links for illegally obtaining YOUR products DO cause serious financial harm.

  3. Barney Britton has responded to say he is now consigning all my emails to his spam folder and breaking off communications. If he won't remove the ban on EOSHD at DPReview, then Amazon will. And I sent him this: -------- Barney It isn’t a closed matter or a case for the spam folder for me. I will be taking things to Amazon, putting in a complaint with them about the negative impression your forum ban is creating for EOSHD, the censorship of your own users and the damage it has caused to the reputation of my site. No doubt I will be pointing out the history of copyright infringement and slander on your forum to them as well, because I have screenshots of posts that were left up for months before being deleted. As well as the inconvenience the forum URL ban places on your users (and Amazon’s customers), it means that Google is picking up EOSHD related topics and discussions on your forum, placing these above the original topics on EOSHD and they are all orphaned without a link to the source, damaging the SEO ranking of my site and causing material harm to my income. The forum ban has been in place for how many years now - 3? 4? You have over several years wound me up to such an extent that you’ve created a negative impression with other staff at DPReview such as with Scott, Chris and Jordan, as well as your forum users. It’s an absolute disgrace. I didn’t have a problem with anyone else at DPReview apart from you and Shawn. Gannon makes a string of idiotic mistakes, but you’re persistently insidious. Think about that next time you have the cheek to ask me to seek to edit my opinions on my own forum. Andrew -------- At least I managed to refrain from calling him a cock-womble this time. Time to turn my focus to Amazon, after all they are the real boss. It is time for Amazon to put an end to the personal vendettas.

  4. Yep! Purchased one and have had it for a week. Initial impressions are very positive. I have never written a review on a seller's website before but felt compelled to do so for the S1. Here is what I wrote: I have used a variety of mirrorless cameras, starting with Sony A7s and A7rII and then the GH5 and most recently the Canon EOS R. The only camera that Ive held on to long-term is the GH5, so I was very excited when I heard Panasonic was releasing a full-frame mirrorless camera. Now that it has arrived, it is truly the most professional, robust, and beautiful mirrorless camera Ive used. I bought and tested out the Canon EOS R, but found it frustrating ergonomically and with hindered video specs (big crops, no stabilization, etc), it required a lot of compromises. It took beautiful images, but for video (which is what I mostly do), the GH5 outperformed it in every way. Next to the EOS R (and definitely all the Sonys), the Panasonic S1 feels like a true professional camera. It's a bit heavier than the other mirrorless cameras, but since I mainly use Sigmas 24-70, 18-35, or 50-100mm, once you have the lenses on there, it's not a huge difference. Its actually more comfortable because the grip is so nicely designed. REALLY looking forward to the 10-bit, V-Log update in a couple of months as well as the Sigma EF L adapter in a few weeks. Will really help make this camera shine. -- To expand on some of those points, it really does feel like a truly professional camera. While there are plenty of mirrorless cameras that get you great results, I often feel like I am fighting the camera (like the EOS R) to have it do what I want. You can do it, it's just not that much fun. Same with Sonys - they just don't feel good and I (personally) don't enjoy using them. I also really think the Sony mirrorless and 8-bit (FS) image is seriously flawed - and that's my #1 consideration for any filmmaking tool. I'm in no way a Panasonic fanboy, but after trying for years to use Sony and Canon, the former with a compromise on image quality, the latter with a compromise on usability, specs, and performance, I'm finally satisfied in Panasonic world with the EVA-1, S1, and GH5. Great color, incredible image, great usability, incredible customization, all the tools and all the required specs and approved codecs. Their mount system is a mess, so looking forward to them hopefully streamlining that in the next year or two. Highly recommend the S1. If nothing else, this test really shows the pretty wide gap in color and image quality between Panasonic and Sony, in my opinion. S1 looks fantastic.

  5. I bought the camera for $2250 with free battery, battery grip and 3 year warranty. I'm selling the grip so it's $2000 camera for me. I really think it's the best camera I've ever owned. I had Canon 6D, 5D IV, EOS R and tried various camera Sony A7III, A9, A7RIII. I primarily use it for still photography. Beautiful EVF, ergonomic, great IBIS, and no banding. The AF is really good for still and the inclusion of eyeAF is much better than Canon EOS R but still no match for Sony. It also track animals. It has alot of little things I like - quick toggle for AF-C/AF-S/Manual, quick lever for silent shutter, manual focus magnification, backlit buttons, focus bracketing, and custom modes. This might be the first camera where I can set the setting for each scenarios I commonly shoot with - timelapse, portrait, landscape, etc. This is so great to have! This does not have the best AF compare to Sony but it's more than usable as is for me. EyeAF is much better than Canon EOS R. I'm sure it will get further improvement. I considered all of Nikon, Sony, and Canon offering. I ended up with Panasonic S1 based on my priority and needs - dual card slot, great EVF, good sensor, IBIS, ergonomic. Here is a AF test done between Sony A7III vs Panasonic S1 Also, I just find out ISO 50 is a true ISO. https://www.l-rumors.com/diggloyd-panasonic-s1r-has-true-iso-50-not-a-faux-iso-kudos-to-panasonic/ This is pretty amazing for increase dynamic range.

Almost every successful YouTuber has early videos that are awful (they may have deleted them but they were there) and every successful Hollywood film director has a box of awkward short films somewhere. You get better by making films, not talking about equipment on forums.

  12. I do a lot of my own work, but have also been hired on quite a few jobs/episodes/pick-up shoots that are either in the Netflix/Amazon/HBO world (and require Netflix approved cameras) or some jobs that are hoping to be picked up by Netflix down the line. Obviously, Netflix buys documentaries that aren't necessarily shot in 10-bit 4K, but a lot of people want to shoot in that anyway just in case.

  13. Yea have to agree with Ade here and, when it comes to things that aren't acceptable in 2019, a 1.8x crop on a full frame camera and terrible RS are way higher deal breakers than autofocus for me. I've used autofocus a couple of times in a semi-professional environment (mostly just for fun) and have come to the conclusion that I still can't trust it. On jobs that truly matter or for a paying client (or my own work that I really care about), I'm manual focusing every single time. Even with the amazing Canon DPAF, it's easy for it to slip off the subject or to the background when the subject moves, moves quickly, or you are panning between subjects. And focus going from close to deep and back again during a pan is not acceptable. I also don't have much trouble focusing manually. Yes, for gimbals it's nice, but the Ronin-S plugs right into the GH5 (haven't tested the S1 yet) and I can manually focus anyway. There are plenty of small, cheap, lightweight follow focuses for all the one-hand gimbals that I'd much rather use with a manual focusing prime (like Zeiss Contax, Vogitlanders, or Loxias) than trust AF. -- As for ergonomics, the little bit of extra body weight doesn't bother me much because once I put the lens on it, the difference is pretty minimal. No, it won't be my travel and for-fun camera, but for professional work, an extra 200-300 grams doesn't bother me. I liked the EOS R, but there were just too many pain points and compromises. Same with the C200. I need a 10-bit 4K codec for my work. And the C300 is an ergonomic nightmare. Canon currently just has a strange lineup of cameras that are crippled in a variety of ways. So, Panasonic, at this moment, is really my only option for my needs.

When they don't even put 4K into their products (hello C100, still stuck with merely a mk2 1080 one!) or "barely" do so (any product from Canon), then you can color me very skeptic when it comes to Canon and 8K Hahaha! Sigma and Leica will together ensure there are plenty of quality lens choices in the near future for the Panasonic S1/S1R!

  18. Unfortunately this ban has never been lifted. 3 years now and running now. I've had people pirating links to my Shooter's Guides on the DPReview forum and found it difficult to get mods to take it down. People cannot link to the genuine URLs at EOSHD. Unfortunately Barney Britton at DPReview (https://***URL removed***/about/staff/barneybritton) doesn't like me, and won't lift the forum ban on the domain name. I may need to ask some of you for help. If you have a DPReview forum account, or a way to contact the moderators, I think we need a campaign to lift this ban once and for all. On top of this, Barney has accused me of libel and has forwarded my emails to Amazon's legal counsel. He wanted me to take down the posts about the Sigma MC-21 adapter on this forum and the comments about the Fran 8K news piece Gannon wrote at DPReview. If anyone can help, please do. Now's the time.

    Canon C300MkII vs C200

    Canon C300MkII vs C200

I shot RAW ages ago on 5D3 and BM Cinema Camera.. which the work from those cameras coincidentally ended up on big screen & major art installations. Shooting RAW & developing it takes more time but doesn't necessarily require more staff (unlike manual focus which may require an AC). I've been doing a lot of corporate / digital content stuff with fast turnover lately but I'm definitely hoping to get back into the more indie/artistic projects where RAW will be put to good use again (part of the reason for upgrading my personal equipment). For that to work into my workflow it's better if it's internal and supported by my favourite NLE. That kinda rules out ProRes RAW options for me. So imho, RAW isn't overrated at all -even for low budget shoots- for certain projects that might involve heavy grading or require ultimate IQ / DR.

  22. That is what I was alluding to in terms of the definition of the encapsulated function rather than the specific term. Calling it "Clamp-O-Matic" or some such would identify that aspect as it's raison d'être and would, I suspect, set off the alarm bell. They'd have been better off encapsulating the whole end to end process of dual 24 bit ADC and 32 bit float recording and the post process normalisation function into one over arching name as that would stop the focus on the NeverClip element. Call it "Max Headroom" or something. No, hang on.

  27. Depending on where you live, and where you travel to, you might find it worthwhile considering buying a good 2.4GHz wireless system (which is hopefully what this new Deity product will be) as a way of being diversified from being only with your UHF products. I agree if you're on a budget and want to buy today a cheap but good lav than OST is the way to go. I would very very strongly disagree with the statement that RodeLink is the "same technology". No, they're just merely on the same frequency. It is like saying a Sennheiser G1 and a Lectrosonics LT is "the same technology" just because they're perhaps using the same frequency. Nope, there is a lot lot lot more going on in the background. And that is before we even begin to touch on the extra feature benefits Deity has over a RodeLink.

If you are looking at a 1" camcorder then I'd pause for a few weeks to see some output from the JVC HC500. Its a lot more expensive but it has a massive spec including ProRes internal and even has a slot to record straight to SSD https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1438286-REG/jvc_gy_hc500_connected_cam_4k_professional.html ////EDIT//// Whoah the HC500 is FAR more expensive than I thought so maybe scratch that!! ////EDIT//// I have to say though that if you pick up an LS300 and pair it with something like the Tamron 16-300mm with a smart adapter then you've actually got a de-facto camcorder with a much bigger sensor for a similar if not cheaper price with all the expansion advantages if you need it. The addition of the Ninja V to the LS300 transforms it in terms of monitoring and recording options.

Why is that scary?! Machines then, robots now, doing all the labor and humans use the most important and powerful part of their bodies - brain, is the dream since stone age. The most depressing thing that is happening in my country are the people at the roads collecting tolls from the passing cars. We have hundrends and hundrends of those, and there are people inside those boxes that you give them money, give you chance , if needed, and your receipt. For some travels you have to stop 10-15 times, which is stupid a) they spend billions to cut 10-15min of travel time, and then stop you every 15-20Khm to pay tolls! b) you have already pay all these through taxes, why add another 25-55€ one way? (Every Khm of high way road costs almost a 1.000.000€ in my country, which is 10 times what costs in EU! Can you guess why? Some are getting very rich building roads here! This is happening since the end of world war ii and the Marshall plan..big story..one reason this country deserved its financial exhaustion, but nothing changed..). These jobs are considered very good ones, because the pay good, and you do just that. Everytime I see them I feel so sorry for them. Imagine doing that 40 times per hour X 8 hours X 5 days a week for 20-30 years! What a waste of humanity.. This is happening already. I know specificaly a top TV station here that have only 1 camera operator and controls 3-5 cameras from the control room. They do news and most of their internal productions like this.

  40. @kye Have you ever used dual channel recording? How is what you are explaining different from dual channel recording and using the peaks from the lower track to replace the clipped portions of the higher track? Because I do it all the time and it works, especially when mixed in (surprise) 32 bit space, because then you can match the relative levels of the two tracks without distortion. I don't know all the maths, but I know from experience that dual channel recording is a life saver at times. I assume the F6 basically does the same thing, combining two input gains based on peaks, but automatically and internally, saving time and file space (1x 32 bit file is smaller than 2x 24 bit files).

  41. The tragic part is that the lens doesn't look as good when you compare it to medium format, and for 4300$ you can buy medium format. This is a mamiya 80 1.9 (200$ lens) on a 1500$ Phase one Df with a P45+ back (48x36mm sensor). The bokeh isn't swirley in the corners, equivalent 50mm 1.3,and this lens covers 6x7 (andrewwww put this on your gfx with a speedbooster)

    Zoom F6 - game changer?

Well, he gets 10 points for shock value. But so does every Apple iPhone marketing campaign.. I think comparing it to a RAW photo is an excellent comparison. Imagine I showed you that you can shoot a raw image really dark and then I can bring up the levels in post and it looks fine, well, that's one thing. Imagine then that I said you never need to adjust exposure - that would mean that if you used it in the way that a normal photographer used it then you'd be fine, but that's not what I said, I said never.. which wouldn't actually work in some situations. 32-bit recording is probably really great, and the noise of the preamps in it is probably very low, but I suspect there are limits and although it's just not very likely that someone will hit them, that's still a very big difference to them not actually being there, which is what he implied. The legal disclaimer for that claim would be very long and have much fine print to go along with it.

  47. The main reason for shooting 1.33x (actually, 1.344x would be best) is to get 2.39:1 output with no waste of a 16:9 sensor. Shooting 2x on 16:9 and cropping throws away resolution. Aside from these considerations, there is the aesthetic look that different squeeze ratios provide. Many people dislike 1.33x because it doesn't look very anamorphic. However, even 2x anamorphics don't always share the same look. Rear anamorphics don't look anamorphic at all. Zeiss 2x Master Anamorphics actually look more like 1.64x true front anamorphics due to their mixed front/rear design.

  48. I am just a guy with an independent voice in the world of camera reviews without hundreds of cozy ties to people from the manufacturers, without ads splattered all over the screen, without sponsors on my every video, yet still I find EOSHD mired in a world of cut throat rivalry. Only very occasionally like in the beginning with DPReview have I been given a leg up in this industry and even then it only takes one person like Barney to massacre that relationship too. The other blogs like NoFilmSchool, Cinema5D and NewsShooter spend 10's maybe even 100's of thousands of dollars trying to punt my homebrew EOSHD site into oblivion and I just find the whole thing utterly distasteful. Rather than offering a new talent an opportunity they instead I am treated like just another commercial rival to be beaten. In the end it is up to you guys to choose. The managed platform of platitudes and advertorial, or the honest opinions and educational books of an artist/filmmaker. May the best guy win.
