    Keep up the great work

Hello Andrew, It seems that from some of your other posts you are sometimes criticized. I read many of your articles and I don't post very often. I am just writing that I, from one of the many, support your independent work, your independent views (unlike those that get buttered up by canikon). I greatly appreciate your work over the years. I am very positive that I speak for many silent readers. Cheers!

    bmp4k adventures

i thought i would chronicle my adventures with a black magic p4k. also i didn't want to pollute the other bmp4k threads any further. so here we are, had the camera 3 days now first afternoon unboxed it, inserted the battery tried to charge it only to find it was already charged. obviously bm expect us to be frothing at the mouth in anticipation and they be right, quite considerate of them really when you think about it :). probably half discharged it by turning it on and pressing every button repeatably in the name of science and to see what would happen and yes, not exactly scientific i know but it is one way to learn. did take some footage of some sheep being fed, again as a learning experience and yes i learned i have a lot to learn. first thoughts well there's been some talk around the lightness of the p4k and to be honest picking up the box it was transported in did feel quite light after unboxing and putting a lens on it er.. a m42 50mm super takurmar, holding it and a canon 60d with a lens in it in the other hand there wasn't much difference nothing noteworthy anyway. the next day got a chance to take it for a drive visited a local soldiers memorial that's just been built. as quite a lot of locals went off to war. those that came back and others were settled around stanthorpe. i'm kinda thinking of making it a documentry with the p4k as i think there's abit of a story to it. but that's another story. had no issues with the battery door or battery sticking yet. my battery compartment has a nice amount of wiggle room. speaking of batteries the bm battery doesn't seem to charge up in a canon charger as its the same battery as my canon 60d. i think i have seen somewhere on the forum that thats already known. i did just check my canon 60d battery compartment there is a lot more wiggle room compared to the p4k. more scientific endeavors follow i learned a cheap $30 toshiba 32 gb sd card from woolworths will record with prores 422 1080 hd for about 5 mins, hey it was something i had lying around. i do have a samsung 1t t5 ssd for it but i dont have much of a rig for it yet and i didn't want to duct tape it to the p4k. one more thing i learned at the soldier monument the aussie sun smashes the screen, its hard to see even at 5 pm in the afternoon. so i'm thinking some sort of hood will be pretty high on the agenda. i'm not saying the screen is bad, just that the sun easily overpowers it. ok thats about it for, now next is play time with resolve, stay tuned for more updates on a newbies appreciation off what a steep learning curve looks like with the bmp4k

  3. The issue this video covers was already mentioned in several topics, but I promised a video explanation and fixes, so here it is. Beware: long, boring, bad English.

    Good oldie 5D Mark II

Looks brilliant to me. Surely I'm naive, but I can't quite understand why Canon can not simply repack, say, that 5D II + ML Raw sensor/codeck solution and sell it as some sort of its own Digital Bolex version to so many devoted Canon indie/moviemakers and admirers?

  5. Soooo I'm going to throw stones here a bit. I tried out the camera an had some serious problems with it. The form factor threw me off. Why for the love of god are BM still putting reflective screens on their cameras for video? Tried to test out the camera for a upcoming short. Honestly it did not immediately strike me as being better than the image from my D750, though zooming in the compression differences do show the advantages of the Pocket. The Dynamic range is worse than I was expecting, about on par with my D750. It is vastly inferior to the URSA mini that I had tried previously, and is actually a surprisingly noisy image out of the camera (cleans up nicely in Resolve denoise). Crop factor was harder to deal with than expected without adding a speedbooster or buying all new glass. Also wanted to rent cine glass for the short, and there is limited options available for wides. Most of all seeing the continuing issue of IR contamination from BM sensors seriously drives me up the wall. Color is better on the BM, but wondering if a external recorder on the D750 will bridge the gap even further. Blackmagic (Prores HQ 4:2:2 Arri Alexa Lut) 28mm D750 (Neutral out of camera) 40mm

    Good oldie 5D Mark II

I just found this 5D Mark II ML Raw video by accident. It’s an ML Raw test from the early days. It is a test for a horror film so it has some graphic/violent content... in case that bothers anybody.

  7. For sure there are so many different aspects and layers to reckon in it, but back to the topic... I'll get in wednesday Moza Air Cross - it has interesting unique feature of expandable plate space, so I'm curious if P4K can fit in it without additional accessories. Strange, I didn't yet manage to find anywhere if somebody has that gimbal working with P4K. Although it has 1.6kg payload, it is still enough for that camera and yet very light (under 1kg). Air Cross could supply power for GH5 or Sony cameras via dumb battery, and I think that the same easy could be possible with P4K and Canon LP6 with maybe just changing jack in... I bought it for Micro cinema camera so will see...

  8. Dziga Vartov was supported by the whole communist system doing their propagands. He had hundrends of people working under him. Same as Riefenstahl. The whole system working for them. Did my thesis about WWII, propaganda and Italian neorealism.

  9. Yes, well, me personally more and more did this (but with luxury to choose) stuff for money But it doesn't matter... Recently I watched again some De Sica's movies - what a richness and uncanny taste in framing with his than-a-days modest BW cameras! What perfection in evolving scripts through language of visual evocation of emotions! What a usage of perspective plans with totally absence of shallow DOF! Whole give-me-just-Alexa-color-science-and-nothing-else and flying crans mumbo-jumbo are smashed to trash in front of mind that experienced, suffered and searched enough and have something to convey about it... Excuse me for digression, back to the topic: De Sica, or even Dziga Vertov, had not any gimbal, but shoulders are always with us

  10. Yes, but, from the other side, as pretty serious intruder from plethora of creative realms, I'm so often shocked how "shallow", one-dimensional and lacking of (time and knowledge and inner peace for) truly original perception/ideas are people strictly learned for film making... And how restricted are with their instruments, as fundamentally deprived in capability for play, for empathy, for seeing different angles and perspectives... What I deeply regret is that I saw such enormously talented men and women at vimeo, with some so deeply original ideas and concepts that are high above of resulting artistic level (or lack of it) of regular movie productions... but those talented people, being poor and outside of mainstream connection, will stay forever anonymous

  11. I'd friendly second that regarding your demands - type of shooting with focus pull system and 7inch monitor doesn't call for relative advantages that might afford gimbal (more appropriate for lighter camera-lens combination). It could be too clumsy to move and operate, paying equal attention to focusing, proper gymbal operation, hands movements, you will easily loose spontaneity and concentration on shot. If a gimbal is the must - than better search for such that could be somehow fix to the body, as some sort of added extremity Once again, I think that goal shouldn't be deadly non-shaking slide, but how to achieve natural movements - and get corresponding natural looking footage - without too distraction.

  12. I don't want to sound silly but how strong are you? If you are on the bigger side go Ronin S. It is sort of the best there is for the money. I don't see how going with the lightest one is going to work with all the stuff you are adding. The Dji Ronin mx with thumb control is some pretty big boy money, not counting heavy as heck. It weighs 6.11 lbs without the thumb. None of them you will Need to buy with all that weight you are adding are going to be light. Running around holding 10 lbs out straight half the day doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Maybe you need to think about a vest. Depends on what your shooting situation is, maybe it is 30 seconds at a time? Maybe you just need to add More weight and come up with a good shoulder Rig and be done with it. Heck of a lot cheaper, and a lot easier to operate unless you are going for total perfection and a lot of low angle stuff, even then you can use a handle to get that kind of angle. You can hold a 20 lbs or more rig on your shoulder for an amazing amount of time. Been there done that. Either way, the bigger you go the bigger your Wallet better be, and your body. At least with the MX you Could add that Monitor you have, but 7" sounds a bit big, and a extra battery, Mike, LCD on and on. The Gimbal alone can handle 10 lbs, not counting what you can add to the cage. It is the most veritable. But also the most money by far. Decisions, decisions.

  15. This thread does indeed attract a certain type of people. I'm also 34 and I've got a PhD in algorithms. (I am hardly as knowledgable about wedding photography, as my username suggests). Maybe we should band together to make an end of manual wedding photography and create Skynet

  19. Seems totally counter-productive to me. Despite their best efforts - reviews of camera's video capabilities and recruitment of Jordan Drake - the site is still pretty much exclusively focused on 'stills'. The specialist video forum is pretty much deserted. They could do with interaction with a specialist video site.

    Canon C300MkII vs C200

Reviving this topic as I'm currently hesitating in between both cams as much needed upgrade to my C100. There is a new C300mkII kit that replaces the cumbersome monitor+XLR clamshell design with the C200's touchscreen, separate XLR module + a shogun inferno (allowing ProRes Raw) for $10K. : https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/01/07/canon-c300-mark-ii-now-available-with-the-c200-touch-screen/ This really makes the C300mkII design more appealing imo. Doing a lot of green screen work with fast turnovers and the manageable 10-bit 422 internal 4K (and 12-bit 444 2K !) will be welcome over the limited C200 internal choices. Thoughts?

  24. This might be the cleanest camera I have ever seen. I would love to see a test with some vintage lenses(and maybe some diffusion) and some film grain thrown on it.

    Good oldie 5D Mark II

Accidents with semi-trailers? Check! This is how my previous car died... it was borderline write-off before they discovered the chassis was bent. Mine was the blue echo, and the 4wd with trailer went in-between my car and the semi. Traffic was almost stopped and the semi and I were next to each other and the 4wd comes flying up behind me, does an emergency lane change in-between me and the road train. His 4wd fit through the gap but the trailer didn't, and was what caused the damage to my car and the dent in the fuel tank of the semi. For an idea about how much faster he was going than we were, look at how far back the truck (and I) were from where he stopped. If he hadn't have emergency lane-changed I'd probably be living a very different lifestyle right now. It was amazing that no-one was really hurt, but we sure made a mess of the highway for a while!
