ok so in the spirit of eoshd togetherness I have decided to share this video to see what u guys think. maybe it will inspire zach ☺️ let me explain: i made this short at the end of last year, but I never completed the edit/fx/etc 100%. Got busy with other stuff, and I was working up my gumption to come back to it with a fresh eye. then my iMac broke, and I have a new ‘puter on the way, but I’m anticipating the nightmare of opening resolve and Siri saying ERROR: NO MEDIA FOUND, because my files, ALTHOUGH BACKED UP, are super disorganized, there might be a few things missing, but at the very least it’ll be a big pain in the ass to relink everything to get going on this again aannnyyyway I always feel bad for posting literally zero videos but numerous dog pics and I was like Screw it, its not perfect, but here ya go. this is not the best file, its the one I had in icloud, there could be a better render, etc etc, and its getting murdered by youtube compression, but my first reaction watching it after not messing with it for a few months was…. …Hey~! Its not too bad! ☺️ not bad for a first film i made all by myself! imagine if I had a crew, a budget… ? so, if youd like to see, pls check it out, and if you have any helpful feedback that involves changing/adding things, that’s great, but I do NOT have access to the actors/locations any more and there is almost no chance of me shooting additional footage, so as long as suggestions don’t involve me spending any more money on this project, I’m all in ? at best, I think this is a cool example of what one person can do with a 5d3 in 2019 with no budget, crew, or resources whatsoever... as indie as it gets lolol

Filmed this yesterday: Some thoughts: It's both a camera test but also a real video - if you're going to go through the whole process then why not get a nice memento out of it I've realised that I'm comfortable with the point-my-camera-at-things style of film-making, but my videos are about my family so should also include me, so this is a test to try and get better at that This was shot with my positively geriatric GoPro Hero3 and was kind of a test at using it as a selfie camera It's shaky as hell, and if you apply strong stabilisation in post it becomes wobble-vision.. I plan to replace it with the Sony action camera which has OIS It was convenient, small, and easy to get a variety of shots with, so I think the form-factor is good 2.7k mode isn't great, the Sony in 4K would be much improved

I think I really just miss my Canon 24-70mm f/4...

Webrunner5 is basically trolling the thread right now. He doesn’t own the Z 6 neither does he have any genuine interest in owning one. It’s just a matter of making the thread turn according to his pipe and instead of having a constructive and positive dialogue it becomes a meaningless back and forth with someone who doesn’t even own the camera. Its jonpais all over again. I don’t like Sony but I don’t continuously bait the Sony threads. Poor Canon users have had a lot of it lately and I feel for them. Can’t write anything positive without ten people showing up screaming “crop”.

I have a WD wireless pro. The wifi transfer speed I find too slow (about 2MB/s) to be of much practical use (my A7r3 wireless transfer is faster.) The ipad's 'file system' (and usb-c port) are so badly crippled, even the ipad pro isnt really usuable for content creation except at a pinch. Its a shame because LR mobile has come a long way and Lumafusion is pretty good (and as many have pointed out incredibly fast.) The ipad is still the best content consumption device out there.

Those numbers are facts, not sure how you can argue Nikon is similar or that GH5 is "suspect". Sounds like fanboy talk.

man... thank you so much for saying that my whole idea was ~dark and low contrast, really saturated~ and my 7GB prores render looks GREAT...! but it gets m u r d e r e d on youtube. this is not the best quality upload due to this file in particular, but i did tests and......... its rough on mobile its exponentially worse. 1080p on the youtube app is not equal to 1080p desktop, and its PARTICULARLY destructive to all the ~pretty dark shots~ that i actually succeeded in making, *not that you can tell* from this upload~! tbh that was sooo frustrating to me, thats a big part of why i was like "i haveta take a lil break from this" ? anyway, thats amazin that you totally saw what i was goin for thru it all... makes my day! tysm edit: see, lookit this low res png screen grab on tumblr... 1. I'm afraid there is more IR with ND filter. 2. I think it is irrelevant where to put IR filter. (If you in aesthetic choice chase for little bit of vintage look, IR pollution actually might be useful.)

Actually, using copyrighted music like that without paying for a licence would STILL be a crime in many jurisdictions, it just means since it isn't going online, it would be much less likely for the copyright owner to know they were being ripped off. If that is fine with people, ok, but then I would hope people who do that are also happy for their photos and videos to be used in a similar way.

well guys its 2019, so according to tim cook you shouldve all abandoned your useless desktops by now amazingly, i am using my first gen ipad pro for actual work for the first time ever – meaning, in my mind, that im spending TONS of time on it. 8hrs a day, which God knows ive never done before im using Procreate, an AWESOME app for drawing and art stuff with Apple Pencil™©® the adobe cc apps continue to absolutely suck. the long promised ipad photoshop is coming "soon"... well my book will be done by then. so. what i wanna know is, WHO here is using an ipad or other mobile device/tablet for actual WORK of any kind? video, photo, design/etc...? anybody? and if so recommend me some apps ?

Messing with some older clips from my Canon 35mm f/2. I think my older copy was sharper.

I am actually getting on with that, despite appearances to the contrary! Currently through the SD car/lightning adapter. LumaFusion can save a project archive including the source clips to cloud services if you have the bandwidth but it can also do it to a wireless drive so I just use a WD NAS when I get home. I got this dock for my SurfaceGo which clips on the side in the USB C port and adds a bunch of expansion ports and readers to it. It was £12. I dread to think how much an Apple one would be if they ever offered such an option !

That makes sense, because Long GOP 100 Mbps should be better quality than All-I 400 Mbps for a static shot. For example, something like a medium shot of an interview subject has like 75% of the frame is completely static, and will be encoded once per group of pictures, instead once every frame for All-I. That's significantly more of the bitrate that can be allocated to the 25% of the frame that is moving. There are very few circumstances in which I would choose to record All-I. I don't see 140 Mbps in The Z6 as a downside.. Even 4:2:2 vs. 4:2:0 makes no visual difference, though it's better for chroma keying. The real advantage of the GH5 is 10 bit. 8 bit falls apart almost immediately, particularly when used with log curves. But despite it's codec fidelity, GH5 footage is not fun to work with so I'd take a Z6 myself. I do wish Nikon had included a 10 bit HEVC codec though.

It's 9 frames, not 9 seconds :). But still too much. Here are a few LUTs with subtly varying curves. We are dealing with 12.3 stops of DR vs 14-15 on Alexa. So alexa rec709 contrast curve is too contrasty for Nikon, of course. Although one of the LUTs is almost same curve. Also Alexa's response in low mids is pretty unique as well. To get a similar response on Z6 you have to rate it at ISO400 (lowest on Z6 is ISO800, just overexpose a stop). But then you loose a stop in the highlights of course, which if exposed correctly come to 6 stops over middle grey on Z6 (versus 7.5 or so on Alexa). Had to tweak the neutrals though, which means they have a bit of a color cast and saturation to them. The work is still in progress. I'll be doing Alexa look library based creative looks as well. I haven't used the Pocket 4k only the OG pocket. With Highlight recovery in resolve it gets more dynamic range.

Back to M mount with the Voigtlander 40mm f1.4

You are spreading around a bunch of misinformation here: The Z6 records UHD 4K at around 140Mbps in 8-bit 4:2:0. C200 shoots either 8-bit UHD at 150Mbps or 12-bit RAW DCI 4K at 1Gbps. 1DX2 does 8-bit 4:2:2 DCI 4K at 500Mbps. EOS R does 8-bit 4:2:0 UHD at up to 400Mbps GH5 does 10-bit 4:2:2 DCI 4K at 400Mbps. XT3 does 10-bit 4:2:0 DCI 4K at 400Mbps. A73 does 8-bit 4:2:0 UHD at 100Mbps. (edited) Sorry to say but Z6 is indeed at the bottom internal codec wise.

IR is always there but when you put on an ND, it cuts light except it doesn't cut IR. So when you do that, IR is more easily seen by the sensor. I use the SLR image enhancer and put it in front of the ND. There's a post somewhere with John Brawley saying that the Pocket 4K has an IR Cut but it's slight as to not affect image quality. So BM is leaving it up to us to decide.

Picked up a cheap used copy of the already cheap Fujinon XC 15-45 mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ. I have the companion one to this lens the 50-230mm which I think is a great value so I was hopeful for this one too. It didn't let me down particularly but it being a power zoom is a bit of an acquired taste and its an underwhelming f5.6 at the (shortish)long end but its small, light, has OIS and covers a great range for reportage. Both lenses as a kit work well with something like the X-T20 here as a compact, lightweight stabilised travel kit (particularly if you add in a faster prime to compliment them) that are cheap enough used that you won't cry yourself to sleep over some mishap befalling them on your travels. Top two rows are the 15-45mm and the bottom row is the 50-230mm.

I am not optimistic for the DJI CoPilot. I am rather bias as I have wasted quite a lot of dosh trying to get an ipad pro workflow to work - Gnarbox anyone? - without success. The LaCie website says that the usb-c iipad pro is not supported. And when it is supported.... 1. I rather bet it will only let you 'see' your footage on the ipad rather than transfer and edit and 2. will it support raw photos as well as say Sony raws as well as video from non DJI cameras??.....

Actually, yes - I really liked this too - I forgot to comment on it. The strange ringing you get from loud sounds was done perfectly - "sound as headspace" was nailed completely!

I also really like the "dark" shots (like 1.44). We're always talking about dynamic range, and IQ etc etc, but sometimes it's all in the shadows. In the murky bits. Makes you look harder. Good stuff.

I have to disagree from my experience with BM cameras - not strictly taking notion of DR (that after all debates seems to me too vague), but simply true RAW vs PR HQ looks better or made such impression-feel even at first glance. Not day and night, but there is a visual difference as I can see. Of course, my eyes are not at all ultimate judge, it might be result of autosuggestion - so rather call for everyone to try and compare. (I don't know how BRAW stay in comparison.)

For reference, here are a few figures: I think the GH5 performs just fine in context!

Are you a young kid? kidding? Time lapse is not a video to be argued to show anything. Another joke is your laughter about the GH5 which is much more professional than the Z6 in so many ways. I kind of like Mushy looking stuff better than eye bleeding sharp stuff. Year the X3000 has really good stabilization no doubt. And sure, adding a mike on top does fit the Sony better. Philip Bloom is into 360 pretty big time and he seems to think 8K or better or go home. 20K Ought to get the job done lol. I am not too big a fan of 360. I am doing good to see 90 degrees, maybe even 60! ?.

True, I'm unlikely to own specifically a Nikon Z6 in the near future. Especially as I see it as tough for the Panasonic G85 to be knocked off its top spot as my preferred camera to upgrade to next. Everything else sub $1K just seems to fall short of the G85 in one way or another. (the Fujifilm X-T30 for instance has the short 4K recording limit and no IBIS) However it doesn't seem to unlikely that I might pick one up in two or three years when prices fall, or a "Nikon Z50" (a mirrorless DX camera) if one gets launched (which it surely will one day). As I do have a soft spot for Nikon! (my first ever DSLR: Nikon D50! First ever camera filmed on: Nikon D90!) It is kinda strange they haven't brought out a cinema grade camera. Just simply sticking the Z6 into a bigger body with SDI/TC/NDs and internal raw would be very popular. Very very unlikely. Not going to happen in the next couple of years, or even double that time span.

I think it is surprisingly good for as old as the camera is. I guess good grading helps lol. Just goes to show, skill helps. I don't know, the Protune 2.7 on the on the latest GoPros is not that bad, as is the stabilization. What are you talking the new Sony RXO mk II, or the Sony FDR X3000? I think I would rather have an Osmo Pocket over the X3000 unless you want an all weather camera. The form factor of the Sony is just, well..odd.

He can't use the flat profile (or EOSHD's Z-log), because he doesn't have a Z6

I know quite a few artist friends that are using tablets for drawing / illustration now. I think you can do some light video editing on the latest iPad, too. Like videos under 10 minutes. I know my buddy that works for the local CBS affiliate was looking into it very recently. I know a writer that uses a cheap Windows 10 tablet and Bluetooth keyboard to write instead of a laptop now. To me, I say use whatever gets the job done. If you can do your work on an iPad or tablet, right on!

The WD Wireless Pro is an interesting workaround (as is the Gnarbox but at greater cost) to get around the file stuff. I've also come across a workaround today for the ProRes issue that could be uses with one of these so I might take the plunge after I've researched it a bit more.

I just started using a current gen 12.9" iPad Pro with Lumafusion for mobile video editing, Lightroom for stills, Switcher Studio for livestream-multicam broadcasts, Canva for on-screen supers and a few others for random tasks. Still trying to find other great photo and video apps. If Lumafusion adds proper color grading tools and I can figure out a better system for moving and storing files on the iPad, I can see it replacing my desktop for all of my quick turnaround work. The one thing that keeps me tied to a real mac is the annoying file organization system of the iPad. Sometimes bringing in outside assets - like a music track from my desktop - can be an exercise in frustration it won't just let me create a bulk storage folder that i can dump everything in to. Though I'm still getting everything sorted, so I may be missing something obvious. But the Pro is incredibly fast, it cuts 4k stuff from the a73, GoPro and P4P with ease. As soon as I get all the workflow stuff sorted, my MBP is history. Chris

It's probably worth mentioning that a tablet can be really good if you're filming yourself and you use the tablet to control the camera. Some cameras have excellent remote control apps or browser-based apps with touch-to-focus and all the aperture/SS/ISO/etc settings.

This was yesterday evening in our recreational area 'Het Twiske'. Colour of the sun was extremely due to sand out of the sahara. My favourite setup Fuji X-T3 + Voigtlander Ultron 40/2 + Bolex Moller 16/32/1.5x + Rectilux HCDNA. Variable ND filter Mentter HD. F-Log, Eterna in post.

I've used Teradek Live:Air to do multi-camera live broadcasts of press conferences, Lumafusion for really fast turnaround edit and upload of pre-game build up pieces and PicturePro for in game photo editing and transmission. Live:Air is feature rich but relies on IP based encoding to get the video signals in so can end up being expensive and complicated for more than a couple of cameras. Another bonus to the LS300 is it has the encoder built in but for everything else you need separate ones although you can use the iPad's own internal camera too. Lumafusion isn't just the best editing app on the iPad (even Apple are using it in their promos now!) but its actually my favourite editing app full stop because of how fast and intuitive it is to use. The new update gives you XML export so you can move the project and finesse it on FCPX etc if you want but it is still missing ProRes which is going to be a limiting factor for me sooner rather than later. PicturePro is basically a complete end to end photo journalism app for live editorial that you can ingest, caption and transmit from and was actually responsible for the fastest shutter press to newspaper website publication time that I have ever had. There was a bit of an incident outside of a stadium and because I had my iPad in my bag I was able to get the pictures of it away and published before everyone else had had a chance to get back to their laptops in the press room Unfortunately, it seriously blotted its copybook one day when it filed an entire batch of blank images ( which is a complete no no for live editorial work) so I couldn't risk using it after that.

Sounds unnecessarily complicated. Just custom WB before each shot at your shooting exposure using a grey card or expo disk. ND, vario nd and lenses all can have different colour casts so this will level the playing field but Vario ND filters because they are polarising will have a much greater influence on the look of the image esp skin texture than any colour cast.

I think in a lot of it, especially in the beginning, can be attributed to the super shallow DoF it has. That is something in bright conditions you really have to be aware of as it draws your eyes away from the main subject. Doing that over emphasizes the bright parts and appears overexposed, which in parts I am sure it is. I am not a big fan of super fast lenses, it just makes overall shooting a Lot easier to make mistakes, Not counting expensive. That is Not what a person needs lol, especially on the Video side. Now it might have been shot on a long Telephoto lens from a distance, who knows. But the danger still exists doing that. Ahh info said it was shot on a Canon Pancake EF-M 22mm lens. You can bet your Buttocks it was set to f2 a Lot lol. But I thought the hair on the woman was beautifully exposed and had a ton of detail. Perfect exposure through and through, no, but pretty damn impressive CS and resolution for a camera that cost just peanuts to buy.
