    my first short

ok so in the spirit of eoshd togetherness I have decided to share this video to see what u guys think. maybe it will inspire zach ☺️ let me explain: i made this short at the end of last year, but I never completed the edit/fx/etc 100%. Got busy with other stuff, and I was working up my gumption to come back to it with a fresh eye. then my iMac broke, and I have a new ‘puter on the way, but I’m anticipating the nightmare of opening resolve and Siri saying ERROR: NO MEDIA FOUND, because my files, ALTHOUGH BACKED UP, are super disorganized, there might be a few things missing, but at the very least it’ll be a big pain in the ass to relink everything to get going on this again aannnyyyway I always feel bad for posting literally zero videos but numerous dog pics and I was like Screw it, its not perfect, but here ya go. this is not the best file, its the one I had in icloud, there could be a better render, etc etc, and its getting murdered by youtube compression, but my first reaction watching it after not messing with it for a few months was…. …Hey~! Its not too bad! ☺️ not bad for a first film i made all by myself! imagine if I had a crew, a budget… ? so, if youd like to see, pls check it out, and if you have any helpful feedback that involves changing/adding things, that’s great, but I do NOT have access to the actors/locations any more and there is almost no chance of me shooting additional footage, so as long as suggestions don’t involve me spending any more money on this project, I’m all in ? at best, I think this is a cool example of what one person can do with a 5d3 in 2019 with no budget, crew, or resources whatsoever... as indie as it gets lolol

I'd suggest that you put it on the camera and: check the connection to the camera is mechanically sound turn on the camera and if the lens is electronic then check that the connection is working hit record focus to infinity and check that you can get the horizon in focus (it might not be exactly at the infinity mark on the lens) change the focus all the way to its nearest position and point the camera at something that distance away do a similar test with testing the full range of the aperture from wide-open to fully closed if it's a zoom lens, do a similar test with the full range of the zoom then point it at something plain (a blue sky is useful) and close the aperture completely and do a full pass on the focus from near to far if it has OIS or other buttons on it then test those functions also test whatever automatic focus modes it has That should test the lens mechanically and electronically, and to check it optically you need to then review the footage on a decent sized display. Pay particular attention to spots (that's what the sky test is for) which might indicate dust or fungus inside the lens (or on the sensor) and then look for vignetting, colour shifts, or anything else that stands out to you. Then just use it a bunch to get to know it, and how it handles flares, skin tones, how soft it is wide open and how much you have to stop it down before it sharpens up, etc.

  4. The old 'tape over the contacts' trick has made a comeback ! Manual focus and locked aperture but at least it mounts and I can see some enterprising 3rd party making a cheap semi-smart adapter now that has aperture control.

    Samsung Galaxy Fold

I was always more interested in the Huawei one when it and the Samsung version were first announced. I'm not sure as a phone really but my interest was in them in a tablet form factor that folded out into a more laptop sized version. I can see much more potential in them for that.

  11. Just to say - for those that dont know (like I didnt) - it is actually possible to send A7iii/A7riii videos to the ipad pro via usb-c (to usb-c) - you send directly from the camera. 1. Set the usb connection on the A7iii to MTP. 2. Turn off usb power supply. Connect the ipad. If your card is relatively full it may well give a 'no photos to import' message but it is just taking its time to read the card. You import via the photos app. Import time are painfully slow - 8MB/sec - so I timed a 1.9gb file at 4 minutes to transfer

  12. Yeah 2TB is sort of a dangerous amount of data to put in one basket as they say unless you are doing Documentary's all day, and even then I would not risk all that data on one storage device. Just get 2 or 3 smaller ones. Better way to go. That way you can forget and leave 2 of them at home and really be unhappy lol. That is the first thing you will find out is how much you forget to bring, or Gee I NEED to buy a Heck of a lot more stuff. Not too fond of using a Monopod with a camera with a touchscreen. And the PK4 is an odd shaped body to start with. Especially a camera you are leaning on. Might get interesting lol. It is damn hard to get a lot of minutes of video unless you just turn it on and sort of walk away. I have been out for hours, and shot 15 minutes of footage, and felt good about getting that. ?

  15. No prob! Usually I'm not a big fan of video reviews and much more prefer the written word, but the videos you do with Chris are an exception - I watch them all, from soup to nuts and never regret it. Anyway, back to the point: the footage looks great. Pleasing colors, nice contrast and good looking motion. It's intriguing to see that Panasonic didn't ignore S1's video capabilites even though they initially stated that it's mainly a stills camera.

  17. Good definition of Knee, Point, and Slope by Tom Roper.. "Raise your hand above your head. The height of your shoulder above the floor is the Knee Sat Level. The height of your elbow above the floor is the Point. The amount of bend at your elbow is the Slope". Knee adjustment really only helps much in very bright situations. When I was doing my ENG thing that was one of the few adjustments we were allowed to adjust in the field. And it was only used if you were forced to shoot into the sun, or really bright lights. And even then nothing too drastic on the curve part. You are not going to gain much DR at the top no matter what you do, but it does tend to look ugly blown out, even to an untrained eye more so than say crushed Blacks. Video is more about compromises than anything else. Hardy any perfect scene to shoot unless you are on a Hollywood studio set where they have all of it covered. That to me is why I am not too big of fan of Run n Gun though a lot of the short, or a lot of quick cuts. Unless the story is just so amazing you can't look away, you can't maintain smooth transitions very easy exposure wise. And you can't recover something in Post that was never there.

  18. Oh I am not saying Don't use a Monopod at all, but I think you might go with a normal tripod for awhile until you get used to using the camera. I use a Monopod myself at times, but I don't use a Fluid Head on one, and I don't have one with the feet either. One gust of wind, or someone wanting to look at the screen or touch it, or you swinging your arm around, ouch. I think until you get really familiar with it I would stay with a Tripod. Buy the Monopod with the head and just find a good used Tripod on the web or Craigslist. That way you can swap the head between them. I like Tripods with a Half Bowl. It is WAY easier to get the camera level really fast. That adjusting the legs thing is the pits. Find a Heavy Tripod, and I even hang a Gallon Jug of water off the bottom of them or use something else heavy. When you are done you just pour out the water and bring the empty bottle home. You can't have too steady of a tripod. The nice thing about a Monopod is they are a lot faster to move, but I have used my Tripod with the legs unfolded and move it around like that. But you can't really pan with one that way. Everyone has different needs and likes. You will figure out your sweet spot. Video is a Lot different from Photo work for Tripod, Monopod usage. And a nice thing is if you have a nice fluid head you can use that for wildlife better than the normal swing gimbals most use in photography for your photography. A lot more Fluid, pun intended.

Haven't posted on here in ages but still lurk, just wanted to say you've done an amazing job kaylee. I don't really 'get' the story, but I'm all for films being mood pieces and trying to evoke a particular feeling rather than being as accessible as possible. I'll try not to repeat what others have said on the visuals, but I really really liked what you did with colour. The opening shots of the man on the bus, at work and then on the subway home were stunning. My favourite set of shots has to be the woman travelling on the bus which felt very cinematic. I liked the idea with the very dark shots and they'd probably look beautiful in a pitch black room, but I couldn't much on my monitor during the day. I like the idea though, did you underexpose these or did you push the levels down in post?

  20. @tekeela Meike are also coming out with a 12mm at some point, could be a great addition! https://www.cinegearpro.co.uk/products/meike-12mm-t2-2-manual-focus-cinema-prime-lens. I would also hold off on buying the monopod right away! especially such an expensive one. You could try buying a cheap used manfrotto photo monopod on eBay to see if you the shooting style. When I do street stuff I prefer to just be handheld. Im lazy, the less stuff I have to carry the more often ill bring my camera! Also personally I find T2.2 more than enough for my requirements!

People like to throw the word organic around but this really captures it imo. Almost makes me wanna repurchase a 5D3! 14-bit RAW FHD >>>>> 8-bit 4:2:0 4K. RAW really lets you go hard on the grade without it looking fake/cartoonish. Worth the workflow effort for narrative. Great execution as well.. especially considering limitations. Getting some dope eery Lynch vibes from it! Care to share some more technical details about shooting/post?

  26. One of the most beautiful and skillful cinematography I saw in last 10 years belongs to "Lore" by Cate Shortland director and Adam Arkapaw as dop... they used exclusively s16 in it. I'd dare to recommend that movie to everybody who yet didn't see it - at least just to take one breath relaxation/inspiration from hard battle of sensor's size/capability fascination. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1996310/

Sometimes a Good copy is not what you want. But the biggest risk is Fungus and that usually is a bummer. Not really easy, or maybe impossible to repair. Some of it really doesn't show up as much as you think. But it could contaminate the rest of your good lenses. I keep my old stuff in a separate bag from newer stuff. I don't even put newer lenses in an old camera bag I have bought or found used.

  30. Looks fine but I'll just say that the two focal lengths you're looking to buy are very similar to each other and I wonder if having a bit more variation might be more useful initially? I do understand that the 16 and 25 are probably the most common focal lengths that get used, so depending on how you shoot it might be fine. I'd suggest thinking about what camera angles / framing you're going to have (two-person, one-person-wide, one-person mid, tight, over the shoulder, and b-roll closeups, establishing shots, etc) and how close your camera will be from them (are you shooting on sets, temporary locations in larger rooms, in people's houses in open-plan areas, houses in smaller rooms, open plan offices, individual offices, meeting rooms, locker rooms, etc ) as this combination of shot+distance will dictate the focal length you will need. For close-ups consider the minimum focus distances of your lenses too. Also consider that if you're shooting 4K you only have to crop into the 16 about 150% to get 25 (which will be a 2.5K image) and if this is acceptable for you to do so, if you're delivering in 1080 for example, then maybe you get a 35 or 40 instead of the 25. Or, you get a 12 and the 25, and you can crop in to emulate a 16, and also emulate a 35 or 40 with your 25. As I said, this is personal, so the only person who can answer it is you, but make sure you've considered that before spending your budget

  31. I own the 25mm Meike and enjoy it very much. It's a good, sharp lens, and I plan on buying the 16mm soon. You'll need a follow focus though. The throw is very long and you won't be able to pull focus very well without one.

  33. Most have USB host ports though so you can just plug a reader in to them. I do like the look of the Nexto (and whilst not cheap its actually cheaper than I thought it would be) but for my uses it lacks the ability to serve the files wirelessly so I'm still looking at the DIY route. There is a new SBC called Rock Pi that as well as USB3 ports also has an M.2 interface onboard. That is a bit of a gamechanger as it means you can have 1TB on onboard SSD storage for portable card backup in the field that can also act as a wireless drive to an iPad and can even transcode if you wanted it to and all for a total cost of under £200 including the storage. I've built experimental ones with other SBCs but even the ones with USB3 have had that achille's heel of needing external drives to dump onto which makes them a bit clunky. I'm going to try and pick one of these up and see if it can match the potential.

You could probably save quite a bit of $$ on the filters & Storage. IR isn't a problem you'll probably ever notice. Ive used the Tiffen Vari-ND at max and only ever noticed it once. 38. Yes, image stabiliser works too! I use them a lot as I work full time in video production, that speaking from my experience since I have huge sample size not just shooting once in a blue moon. Obvious S1 is not targeted to you, there are many tools out there to suit your needs, I just buy whatever fits my need. Compare to c200 it is much lighter, I’ve done c200 handleheld for half day, so S1 weight is totally fine for me.
    1 point
  39. Morning! I see you've all been busy while I was sleeping There issue here is that there isn't such a thing as a 'better' camera, only "better for ...... situation" The S1 might have colours that please you better, the Z6 might have menus that someone likes more, sure, and these days there are no more bad cameras, I'm sure the S1 and the Z6 are just lovely. But it depends on what your situation is - for the person with m43 glass the GH5 is better than the S1 (or an Alexa for that matter), for the person who has very little HDD space and only needs 1080 the c100 might be hard to beat, and for the person who shoots underwater or in action sports a GoPro is a pretty good option. Hell, for the person that wants 240fps an iPhone kills basically everything else because not much else can do it. If we make some assumptions about what you're trying to say, and we assume that the person: 1) has no lens collection, 2) has $5K or whatever for a new setup, 3) values the colour straight-out of the camera or with very light grading, 4) has the time and hardware for RAW and high-bitrate codecs, 5) assuming that what is announced actually gets delivered on, and 6) a future camera with a different lens mount doesn't come along that will significantly beat their choice, THEN maybe the S1 or the Z6 might be the best options for that person. You may be right - those cameras are probably the best current option for many many people. The problem is that any of the things that I listed as assumptions may not apply to the person out there that you are trying to save from online treachery. If that person has a lens collection already then that skews it for mounts that are compatible or can be adapted (if that's ok for that person). If they don't have a setup but don't have the $5K+ for a new setup required then maybe a lesser camera with a cheaper / more available ecosystem might be better. If you don't mind about colour straight-out of the camera, or can grade, then practically any 10-bit camera will be good. If you're looking for Alexa colours then the GHAlex LUTs from Sage are a real plus for the GH5 right now. If they don't have the time or heavy footprint of RAW then they'll be wanting something that shoots the quality / bitrate compromise at their optimal point. Lots of people shoot in a regular profile and get things right in-camera so they don't have to grade at all, this is mainly for speed in post-production, which is a big deal for people on tight timeframes. If you're looking for the best camera and the S1 is better than the GH5 and you go all-in for that, then you're at risk of the GH6 making you regret your decision. No-one can predict the future, but if I was in the market right now, even if I didn't have any m43 glass, the system still looks like it might be more attractive because of its history, although FF third party lenses are starting to fill out like they did for the m43 system over the last years. Until we get a camera that's perfect for everyone, people will still have unique requirements that mean they prioritise factors differently to others, and therefore buy differently.

  40. Cmon now, continuous AF for video is clearly not the cameras strong point and isn't close to being in Canon league or even Sony I'm afraid.. There will always be heavier cam rigs to compare with but fact does remain S1 is by far the heaviest FF MILC.. it's even a few grams heavier than a D850! With the grip and extra batteries we're probably talking 1DX2/D5 territory. It's a valid factor to take under consideration imo. Lotta people go mirrorless to gain on weight.

I wanted to watch this twice before I commented. And I think I want to watch it again, on a bigger screen, before I get too detailed. But I will say, I think you did a great job, Kaylee! I love the simplicity of your shots... compositions... the handheld static shot is very powerful. Your use of frame, not only in a shot but how it would edit with the next shot left me feeling sad for the characters. I also thought all of the FX were well done. It was cool to see your earth shot come to life as it did. Very cool!!! I think even after another viewing, the images and connotations will haunt me for a little bit.
