  1. This is sad news and maybe premature, but in my opinion all the new full frame systems all have strategic flaws. The BCN numbers are out in Japan which show a limp launch for all the new full frame systems, followed by a tanking of sales soon afterwards until they're a fraction of the Sony A7 III. The bottom line quite literally is that Canon and Nikon are failing to take business away from Sony in the full frame mirrorless market (at least if Japan is anything to go by). Read the full article

  3. HBO Nordic stream in 5Mbps while Amazon Prime is supposed to have considerably higher bit rate. My HBO subscription is through a 3rd party which relies on HBO Nordic. They have never released an episode on time, and for the second episode it seems like they completely forgot about it because it was a public holiday. In other words, I don't trust them to provide an ideal viewer experience, and the 3rd episode was a dark porridge on my screen. It's a shame they're investing so much into visuals when the last leg of delivery ruins the results, but I also partly blame whoever decided to only use 20% of the histogram for the entire episode. Maybe we need video codecs that normalizes the gamma and adjust it after compression, a bit like how GIF chooses the colour palette based on the picture. EDIT: I downloaded the 5GB version of the episode now, and that version is perfectly fine as long as you ignore the banding and watch it in a dark room. It's completely different from whatever I streamed the day after release.

  4. If you can't make beautiful videos with the XT3, GH5 or A73, the camera is not the problem. When it comes to the differences, I find the GH5 a bit more robust and user friendly than the A73, while the A73 has some spec wise advantages. No experience with Fuji.

  6. I'm assuming you weren't actually looking for a response. Hook has been helpful when he's had time. Why go this route? I'd love for his input to remain a part of this forum. Omit the emotion when asking the question so we have a chance at an answer. I know this topic has come up before and he's responded to it. Things are always changing. Lets keep it real in here. Even if I missed something I don't know about, that post isn't getting any of us anywhere. My two cents.

  8. I consider the fixed 200 f2.8 even more of a specialized lens than the 50-200. I don’t have any hands on time with the 100-400 but I think that one only makes sense for people who enjoy shooting a lot of wildlife. Where I’ve been impressed with this lens is the excellent built in OIS. Fast autofocus in video. It’s supremely sharp through the range. But what really makes it worth the price tag is the aperture has a gentle curve to f4 on the long end only reaching it at 150mm. It can get away with being a pretty decent portrait lens at 50mm and f2.8 in a pinch. The bokeh is pleasing and not nervous at all (something the Olympus 40-150 has IMHO). Build quality is excellent. The lens hood is the only plastic that comes with it, which I don’t mind a bit. Less likely to bend or be dented in my bag. It has a very excellent telephoto range versus compact size. Really the only downside so far has been the price. If you don’t need it now, I’m sure the price will go down a bit more. It’s an excellent lens all around and a great telephoto for my GH5S with the OIS. I think it perfectly maxes out the balance of size, weight, aperture, and focal length that m43 gives us. Any bigger and it would be silly on m43. But don’t get be wrong, it’s still insanely compact for a 400mm FF equivalent. It slides in my cargo pants pocket. I’m looking forward to shooting some fly fishing this summer.

  9. Its going to be fascinating to see what the XDCAM management team will "allow" the Alpha management team to give the new A7S-III. A Sony manager fir Russia was stating that he thinks the A7S-III wont have "deep color" as that is reserved for the XDCAM FS series only. I suspect he means 10bit. I heard at NAB that Panasonic is very receptive to the S1 having 4k raw over HDMI and that it IS definetely comming to the S1 this year. Those same sources told me that Sony is not willing to go that far right now. Atomos is pressuring them but Sony is not buying into the raw idea for Alpha. (The next FS probably) Will Alpha be allowed to have highly compressed 10bit internal recording or will it only be granted 10bit video HDMI? I would love to be a fly on the wall in these Alpha/XDCAM manager board room meetings!! 2019 is a massive political fight for managers inside Sony and Panasonic. Nikon?....no no, HDMI raw was an EASY choice!!!

  12. Sony monopoly danger? Maybe Do this market just needs to slow down? Do we need to look at what we have from 2012 and realize it's good enough? Do we have to sit back and watch the rise of smartphone cameras? For now, I'm going to stick with my m43 gear. It's more than good enough, cheaper, lighter and gives me a really different aesthetic.

  13. The beauty of Quad Bayer are the video capabilities and big ass resolution sticker on the box. No need to drop to a maximum of 24 or even 12 megapixel to get a full pixel readout quality 4K readout going. 8K / 48 megapixel stills at same time as 4K in low light to match a 12 megapixel sensor with big fat pixels. Stacked design makes the readout really fast too. Sure Sony can do a 48 megapixel sensor with all of what you mentioned, most of it is new to me though, so maybe I am completely out of my depth with things like Pyramid Surface Diffractor... But why, when Quad Bayer works so well? By the way I get usable ISO 12,800 on the Mi 9 camera... On a phone... In video mode at 4k 60p.... Incredible. ISO 1600 in video mode looks so clean, it may as well be an A7S II.

  14. With all the new full frame cameras (and I do love the S1), I would like to see a big push very soon from the MFT world (mostly Panasonic), because I am remembering why I always like to get the best quality possible in the smallest footprint possible. Since they've said over and over again that their full-frame cameras are for photographers and their GH-line for videographers, then Panasonic needs to prove it soon with one of these monster MFT sensors in the GH6 or a dedicated video/cinema camera. The GH5's specs are now being matched (almost) from the full-frame and APS-C world. It had a 2-3 year head start and now it's time to give the GH6 another 2-3 year head start from the next round of full-frame cameras. 36 megapixels, internal ND, full V-Log, GH5s low light, GH5 IBIS. Done. I have a hard time believing the A7sIII will be able to do everything stated without it overheating and catching fire in your hands.

  16. Hi! It's one of my first posts here but not the funniest I guess… I'm not especially talking about a magic C-lens in particular here but about a very underestimated question: radioactive lenses! One of my friends is a fireman captain and introduced me yesterday to one of his colleagues specialized in technological risks and chemical dangers (at Poissy, France : they're known to have very great equipments.) We made 3 different tests on all my Russian lenses which are all OK excepted the Mamiya Sekor 55mm f1.4 (M42). Here are the results: From 5 to 10 µSV per hour (by direct touch), and 1720 shocks per second. Element involved is Thorium 232. They told I really shouldn't keep it. Work with it more than one hour is dangerous. It must be gifted to specialized services and absolutely not be destroyed! Or thrashed! The most dangerous exposure isn't even radiations but dusts to inhalate or ingerate (when a lens gets old it disaggregates - it's something you can't always clearly see). I'm lucky cause until today I kept it in my basement. So, say it please to your friends and all potential Mamiya/Takumar users that you know via websites etc, it's a strong matter of health.

  17. This is an interesting product designed for wirelessly sending video to your phone. There doesn't seem to be huge interest in wireless transmitters on this board, but people go nuts about anything that lets you use your phone as a display, and this might be a slightly bulky way to achieve this outcome. The video was posted a week or so ago and I expected it to show up but no-one mentioned it. Maybe it's of interest to someone? Specs: 140ms delay (3 frames if you're at 24p) 100m/328ft range 1080p60 signal with variable bitrate depending on distance can send to 4 devices simultaneously 3.5 hour battery life automatically finds the best wifi channel before sending the app(?) has various display functions, focus assist, false colour, histogram, zebras, monitor LUTs, markers, zoom, etc

  19. I've mentioned in some places (even commenting in one post here in EOSHD, I think) that my dream MFT camera would be one with the GH5s sensor with options to turn on or off the Quad-Bayer (like these 40-48mp smartphones are doing). You would have 40mp stills option to work with good light, 10mp to work with low light, and maybe (don't know if it is possible because of the Quad Bayer arrangement) a 20mp with some kind of interpolation. And for video, the excellent 4k of the GH5s / BMPCC 4k. Put is on a camera with IBIS, and the deal is done. Maybe is the plan for the GH6. And a GX10 like this (even with a 30min 4l record limit) would sell like hotcakes.

  20. I'm not missing the fact that £2100 is a lot to spend on essentially a hd hybrid in 2019 when all the other cameras offer decent 4k. It's not like 4k hasn't been available for many years on other cameras, Canon seems way behind on this, RS and DR. Tis a bummer cause I've got a lot of Canon lenses but I think I'm going to sell them, and the good old C100 and finally free myself from the constant disappointment of waiting for Canon to get their arse into gear

  21. Sony (and Canon) have got to change mindsets about this. Currently, if you want 10-bit 4K internal from them you have to shell out $7K minimum for an FS7 & $10K for a C300 II. indeed it seems XDCAM/EOS C managers are the ones cock blocking 10-bit internal from MILC line. I don't understand why they are so afraid of mirrorless. I seriously don't think MILCs are a serious threat to cine cams. There is room for both. And if they don't adapt, other players like Fuji, Nikon and Panasonic will..

  22. I could be wrong but the cameras were too noisy for the night shots. Either they were conservative with lighting or poor choice of lenses or something else.

  23. Very good points. The problem is that most established players in various fields are happy to play it safe and milk the consumers for big bucks for small improvements. We saw this in the phone business with Nokia and Blackberry when Apple and later Samsung ate their lunch. By the time a new technology like mirrorless FF has caught up these established players can't move fast enough to catch up with the market leader and once they start bleeding money they don't have the resources to catch up. As an enthusiast I've been waiting for almost 10 years for a sub US $1000 FF(new release price) but the established players have been in no hurry. Finally happened last year with A7II but that is a last generation with no 4K video. In the meantime the most innovation in imaging in the last decade has come from smartphone manufacturers squeezing the low end as well. I suspect that only one of Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic will survive in the camera market in the next decade. If you place a bet on the wrong horse you are going to see your equipment depreciate rapidly. Even my X-T3 has depreciated as much as a A7III bought several months before its release(about $300-400). That is the price for 4K 10 bit 60p internal. Buying a camera from these players today could very well be like buying a phone from Nokia or Blackberry in 2011. Only people with sentimental attachments or very specific requirements/mandates (encrypted corporate email, 4k 10 bit) will do it and these people should be prepared to pay a heavy price in the form of accelerated depreciation.

  27. https://instamic.io/products/instamic-pro Interesting new firmware update! Now records with timecode, thanks to being connected to a Tentacle Sync E. Unfortunately with its short battery life of 3hrs (and no mic input, and somewhat thick size, are the other cons. Plus the biggest con of all: no way to monitor the audio life) means it definitely want find widespread usage in my world. However it might be a handy tool for some people to use in some rare instances, as the so called "Pro" version is waterproof! Thus it could be handy to keep around a couple of these to pull out for short segments during the day while shooting in the water if you don't already own any waterproof transmitters.

  29. Oh, it's mostly just a for fun lens and way beyond practical. I currently own a Nikon 75-300mm F/4.5-5.6. It's a total shit lens-- on or off my speedbooster. Tons of chromatic aberration and very soft. I've had it for like 15 years, and it has never impressed. My other telephoto that is much nicer is an Olympus 40-150mm F/4-5.6 that I picked up as my first native m43 lens when I bought my GH5-- on sale for $100 dollars US. This is... no joke, a really decent lens for a plastic-fantastic bargain bin lens. Puts the Nikon to shame, and it fits in a front pocket. It's currently my only autofocus m43 lens, and does a half decent job for its size. So yeah, I'm interested in a nice long tele for my growing micro four thirds passion.

  34. Funny thing is you're both right. There are pros and cons to the EOS R and it's a case of deciding what you need. I need full frame, with minimum quality of 4K.... Not the usual Canon Not Even 1080p level of detail. I already have very good Super 35mm for $1000 from Fuji and don't need to spend over double to get it from Canon, with even more of a crop at 1.8x. Why not just use a GH5? OK, the autofocus is a strong point on the EOS R but most of my favourite lenses are manual focus any way. I need good slow mo. EOS R has the worst looking 120fps I've ever seen. May as well be 480p standard def with moire. I need handheld stabilisation, and I don't care how it's implemented as long as it works brilliantly like the Olympus E-M1X does. The EOS R's doesn't, and it crops in even further. Also the rolling shutter in 4K is a big problem for handheld shooting. I also need very good low light performance and again the EOS R is found wanting. Finally I like a camera with a bit of a soul, not a charmless body but some photographic DNA In there. The EOS R doesn't really do it for me in that department either. Then again these are just my needs... Others are entitled to their opinions. Some don't even need video and will look at it purely as a stills cam or a work tool. And yes the battery life is pretty mediocre too. The only things it really leads in are: Colour science Nice EVF with good peaking Canon lenses Dual Pixel AF... But then again Sony, Fuji and Olympus (E-M1X) are all doing great video AF and tracking now... Dual Pixel AF is less of a draw.

  39. The correct answer is: who cares? The only thing I want to know is: will it have a flip around screeen? I need to get content out the door as quickly as possible, and the Sony screens with the exception of the A6400 are a stumbling block that just slows down the entire operation. i dicked around with the a7s for the first 3 years of my show, then switched to the GH5. ...a far more practical camera for YouTube. Would love to shoot on Sony again, but not if it’s going to be a pain in the ass! —Glenn www.youtube.com/spectresoundstudios

Now and then I do check out the prices of an EX3 on eBay, and kinda to my surprise they're still fetching a half decent ish price (waaaaay less than new though!). Certainly nowhere near close enough to a "what the hell, spure of the moment indulgence" purchase.

  41. Interesting what Roger says about Voigtlander lenses on Lens Rentals. "OK, I stated on the last set of tests that I despise Voigtlander lenses. That’s because they simply can’t be repaired reasonably and parts are not available, so they are basically disposable lenses. But, I have to say, I was markedly impressed by the 25mm Voigtlander’s performance. And this lens provides by far the widest aperture at a middle-of-the-road $800 price tag. You pay a weight penalty because of the metal housing (and if you think a metal housing makes lenses more reliable, come spend a day in our repair shop). But you get a 10-bladed aperture with that. And yes, I’m aware a lot of you won’t consider a manually focusing lens. But some of you will".

in video mode with extraction for 2.39, I quickly tested in photo mode and I should also be able to extract 2.39 from it . Basically the cinelux cover up to 42.5mm for 35mm, 4 perf anamorphic ( that a larger area than most super 35mm sensors), once you add a single focus solution in from you mostly cover up to 45mm . https://www.pointsinfocus.com/tools/depth-of-field-and-equivalent-lens-calculator/#{"c":[{"av":"2","fl":42.5,"d":3048,"cm":"0"}],"m":0} I did a data input there so you can see the equivalency per format. That still theoretical as the lens design of the taking prime influence the values as well, but that a good ballpark.

Even in photo mode? Or in video (after cropping out the sides in order to finally deliver in 2.35:1) ? That'd be quite a feat, though everything is possible. Especially in anamorphic world. Meanwhile, OP mentions M4/3 camera, which most likely means GH5 and therefore - 4:3 open gate mode.

    1. modern glass, so native high quality M4/3 glass from Panasonic or Olympus or veydra. 2. cinelux ES 3. Rectilux HCDNA You will get oval bokeh and some corner distortion ,that will be very sharp but sterile . You should rather consider vintage primes as taking lenses, you will get less sharp results but something with more live in it.
