I love how he claims it's the iPads and everything else fault. So, if you can't watch it on an iPad, with factory calibrated screen, covering DCI P3, working with variable frame rate to match the content, offering over 500 nit brightness and extremely good contrast what should we get? 4000$ HDR Oled Screens? In the end it was just too dark and HBO made it even worse with their crappy compression. Get your content delivery sorted and then start blaming customers!5 points -

I agree with Reaper and Fusion, there are not much alternatives there, although, and depending on the level and if you're used to layers and comps don't discredit Hitfilm. I know is not as powerful as Fusion but I see it growing every year as a viable alternative just not for fast turnaround or high level stuff yet. And lightroom, for DAM it depends. On1 is really nice, the price is right and the tools are nice. I feel it's still a little bit clunky, not as polished as say Capture One but as with hitfilm, don't discard it because it looks it's developing quite well. It might be the age but I'm more willing to buy products from developers that listen and help them grow(and I include Blackmagic here). Or it might be my desire to find underdogs and Davids that can bring some fight to big Goliaths. For photoshop I rather use Affinity photo but in the open source world see the development of Krita more elegant than Gimp.2 points -

AE: Fusion. It's not as nice for motion graphics, but much better for compositing. It's still usable for motion graphics. Fusion's tracker is phenomenal, though I still haven't quite gotten the hang of manually adjusting tracking points yet. Audition: Reaper. Reaper completely replaces Audition multitracking, and mostly replaces the audio editor. Reaper's builtin noise reduction plugin isn't as good as Audition's, but that really the only downside I've found. Reaper works very well with VST (and other) plugins, so a third party noise reduction plugin could even out the difference. RawTherapee is fantastic for RAW photo processing. Gimp is my goto for photo editing.2 points -

I managed to find one of these filters for a Canon 50D on ebay for cheap (I bought the Mosaic Engineering VAF-50D Optical Anti-Aliasing Filter), and got round to making a video with it yesterday in mv1080p rewire mode (full sensor 3x3 line skipping). It works, doesn't get rid of the aliasing 100%, it's still there in extreme situations, but the reduction is substantial. I stuck the filter into an EF-M to EF adapter with sellotape, it's impossible to fit it directly in front of the sensor as it's too large - I actually tried to fit it by cutting the filter's frame off, but the glass started cracking straight away so stopped that attempt immediately (you can see a crack in the photo on the top right corner of the fulter, but it doesn't affect the image luckily).2 points -

I don't watch GoT so maybe the few images I've seen online are misleading, but it looks unnecessarily dark to me. Compare the screenshot at the top of this page https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2019/4/30/18524679/game-of-thrones-battle-of-winterfell-too-dark-fabian-wagner-response-cinematographer With another nighttime battle: https://images.app.goo.gl/3wP5kc7T9JKKCi7m7 The LotR image is obviously nighttime: it's dark, bluish, and moody, and yet the faces are bright enough to see without any trouble, and there are spots of actual pure white in the reflections. It's the job of the cinematographer to give the impression of darkness while keeping the image clear and easy to understand. If it were an end-user calibration problem, everyone would be complaining about every other movie as well. It seems like something was different here.2 points -

Speaking of dark, but unrelated. My buddy and I bought tickets to see The Passion of the Christ, but by the time we entered the theater the movie had already started. The beginning of that movie is pitch black so we couldn't find our seats. I didn't even know if I was standing in the aisle or in front of someone. I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face. It was both uncomfortable and hilarious for a very inconvenient amount of time. First world problems, considering the film we were trying to watch.2 points -

Krita is also great and does seem to have an active development community. It seems more geared towards creating artwork from scratch, with a phenomenal brush engine and great graphics tablet support. I find Gimp quicker and more intuitive for simple photo touchup with the clone and heal tools, but it could also just be that I have used it more.1 point -

I have not tried the newly released version so it might be even better. Grab the portable version and you don't even have to install it, just run it from anywhere. BTW portable is the best way to run anything (IMO) and I do it whenever I can, like web browser that I can just delete folder and open from backup if anything breaks or keep several version of depending on what I do with it.1 point -

Yikes! Mine chokes up a bit, lots of stuttering when scrubbing too quick, but its not that bad. It does take a second to think before playing every time I hit play as well. But I don't have anything with the bitrates the GH5 can produce. I can stack all the BM Raw sample clips on a timeline and mash through them much easier, it looks like the Vega and 8-cores will solve my h265 issues though. I'm still amazed at how easily I can edit footage on my phone in comparison. I chopped down 40 min of drone footage and 45 min of GoPro 4k60p footage into a 25 minute video in iMovie, complete with background music and it was fine. It also rendered out a 1080p final video in about 10 minutes, the 4k version took about 25 minutes. Unbelievable. Chris1 point -

So far only touch, no keyboard, as I'm usually editing on the go - like in moving cars, on planes, in a restaurant, or any other place I happen to be stationary while on assignment. This does look interesting, but the iPad Pro and Lumafusion has helped me shrink the size/weight of my kit as I no longer carry a laptop. I even went with the 11" pro over the 12.9 because its more portable. For me adding something else to carry is no bueno. But that's just me. As always, amazing work. I hope you sell a ton of them. Put it out to Henny Tha Business and The Art of Photography YT channels, they do a lot of Lumafusion videos and Henny was at NAB demoing v2.0. Cheers Chris1 point -

Hard to see beyond that. Other than the integral network it has. I often have ideas for a film. So I pop in here to read gear reviews. And look at CVP. And convince myself that the idea needs new stuff. And read the Resolve manual. And watch YouTube videos. And do some financial sums. Then I forget what the idea was and go back to work. Thats why I’m not a filmmaker. If I was, then I’d forgo all those interim steps and just make the film...1 point -

Oh yeah....Panny no doubt threw some cripple tricks into the S1. One of the worst being 128k compressed audio! 128k!!!! What decent camera on planet Earth has audio THAT compressed? The S1 was given one of the WORST audio recording modes in the entire camera industry. It sounds "ok" but what happens when you take a 128k audio track, edit it and it gets compressed again on YouTube? Your 128k....which is already heavily stripped of data...gets slammed again. Dont worry though, if you buy the VLog upgrade, you THEN get PCM uncompressed audio.1 point -
Pros will tell you that there are no cheap options for professional grade HDR editing. The cheapest pro option likely being EIZO CG3145 for ca. 20-30k$ USD? However, some HDR TVs are used on a budget and you can use LUT for calibration.... LG C8 series OLED 4K or Samsung QLED 4/8K (although not sure about using LUT in these) seem to be good. Read through the topics on different forums: For example: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?173930-State-of-the-GRADING-monitor-2019 https://liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php?threads/lg-c8-experience.12401/1 point

Because Canon continues to hoard their 4K non-crop and DPAF features for their cinema line at a time in which most other brands are offering it in all of their cameras. That 1.8x crop is a killer when you factor in that you have to change lenses to go between 1080p and 4K to get the same FOV. If the 5D3, 5D4 or 6DII had proper 4K, most previous Canon owners would have never jumped ship.1 point -

some clarification about gh5 and a73
stefanocps reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
Lots of people dislike Sony color, though HLG is kind of a work around you can use. An issue with Sony is it uses heavy noise reduction past 1600 iso that causes ghosting and soft mushy skin tones. Gh5 is very usable up to 3200 iso. However its going to have noise at 1600 iso and up. Its pretty pleasant noise at least up to 3200 iso, but its there. If you are one of those people that obsess over noise I'd definitely recommend the Nikon Z6, A7S2, or Pana S1. Just have to decide what system to invest in. The A73 is also great if you want the latest auto focus, just keep in mind the noise reduction issues it has(may not even be noticeable to you). I find the XT3 is a great inbetween full frame and M43. Its hard to beat its internal 10 bit recording at up to 400mbps as well as 4k 60p.1 point -
some clarification about gh5 and a73
stefanocps reacted to kye for a topic
+1 for what @UncleBobsPhotography said. There are differences between the cameras for sure, and each has strengths and weaknesses. For example the a73 has great low-light, is FF (which some care about), but Sony is 8-bit in-camera and lenses are quite expensive and although there aren't that many third party lenses, there are fast zooms available (24-70/2.8 etc). The GH5 isn't as good in low-light, and doesn't have fast zooms available (the 12-35/2.8 is equivalent to a 24-70/5.6 lens on FF so it's not a fast zoom), but it has 10-bit internal, a 5K h265 anamorphic mode that can de-squeeze in-camera, and there are is a large array of native and third party lenses. I don't know as much about the XT3 but it also has an excellent reputation, having great colour IIRC, so you are right to consider it. People saying a camera is 'unusable' or 'terrible' have lost any rational perspective, or never had any in the first place. My advice is to work out what features you are looking for in a camera, and then rank them into features your camera Must Have, Should Have, and Could Have. Then watch a bunch of reviews and rate each camera against the features you identified, then have a look at which one has more Must Have features, and take price into account and see where that lands you. Don't forget to consider the entire rig as well: lenses, media, spare batteries, battery grips, chargers, computer to edit footage (h265 from GH5 is very difficult to edit), bitrate and therefore file sizes and the HDD space to store the footage, etc...1 point -

I'm hoping not but it certainly remains a possibility. They currently still have the weakest 8-bit 100mbps codec despite being on third generation. Could be. Sony manager recently admitted A7S is aimed at photographers first. 8 bit will do for video enthusiasts & YT community. For pro video they want you to step up to XDCAM. Not really. Nobody asked for rubbish DfD AF, 4K60p crop & a kilo weight size. I expect A7S3 to have killer AF, 4K60p / 1080p 240fps no crop, ultra-low RS, electronic auto-ND, next-level low light & a surprise feature like 8K burst or something.1 point -

Does anybody think that Sony actually has the BALLS to make an 8bit A7S-III compete against all the other 10bit cameras on the market? Does Sony think their 8bit "low light" performace is so good that people wont care that its 8 bit? I can say that my S1 with 10bit color already FAR exceeds any "low light" requirement I will ever need. And this is comming from a guy that just sold his A7S-II for the S1. The S1 is far superior to the A7S-II is countless ways. When the S1 gets HDMI and Atomos ProRes raw 4k....Im finished. I dont need and A7S-III....ever! There are a ton of features that could be added to cinema cameras to differentiate them from MILCs. How about wireless timecode with auto sync? It’s not even like the tech needs to be invented. This protectionist nonsense is killing sales and stifling innovation. Bad market aside, I believe a lot of buyers find it hard to justify buying into any of the new systems because all of them have been released handicapped in some way or another. For 90% of users, they would do better to wait until the second generation products are released.1 point -

https://instamic.io/products/instamic-pro Interesting new firmware update! Now records with timecode, thanks to being connected to a Tentacle Sync E. Unfortunately with its short battery life of 3hrs (and no mic input, and somewhat thick size, are the other cons. Plus the biggest con of all: no way to monitor the audio life) means it definitely want find widespread usage in my world. However it might be a handy tool for some people to use in some rare instances, as the so called "Pro" version is waterproof! Thus it could be handy to keep around a couple of these to pull out for short segments during the day while shooting in the water if you don't already own any waterproof transmitters.1 point -
It was definitely dim. I was waiting for a very big file to show up (5GB) and even that was too dark. I watched on my OLED on a custom day profile (it is brighter than my usual night custom) with dim lights and it was very difficult to follow at times. The dragons fight also, that was a mess. They should have used some colors or something to make the dragons stand out, same for the soldiers. The strategy on the battlefield was a complete mess also. I read about history and historical battles, and the whole thing was disappointing. They didn't do any reconnaissance, they send their shock troops (cavalry) first without even knowing the enemy (cavalry never utilized with such a way in history), they had only one line of defense just a few meters from their walls, they had their machines in the second or 3rd line(wtf!), while the dead were at the ring of fire they were just looking at them (wtf2!use your arrows!), totaly mis-used their tactical advantage of 2 dragons (air support), the strategy in the walls was subpar, at best e.t.c The whole thing was impressive though and the director kept the rythm very well in my opinion. Certainly great television. Took them 55 nights to shoot, by the way. 55 for a TV episode must be somw kind of record. What happened to the Direwolf?! It was there for 333 frames, and then gone as a Ghost!1 point

Let's list out the Shortcomings of the EOS R 1. No 4k 60p and no DCI 4k. 2. 1080p only at 23.98/24/29.97/59.94fps. 3. No 120fps 1080p. It still has 720p for high speed video (in 2019???). 4. MP4 video format instead of MOV 5. Internal codec limited to 4:2:0 8-bit internal recording despite that monstrous 480mbps codec MP4. 6. Huge 1.7x crop factor with 4K (some even claim an imaginary 1.8x crop). Meaning low light would be an issue and the quality of sharpness may be debatable 7. Recording time limited to 29:59 for continuous video recording. 8. No IBIS and many of it's new lenses don't have OIS meaning shake would be like a bad amateur after effects job. 9. There was banding in photos, but it seems to have been improved substantially. 9. One of the lowest rated full frame Mirrorless sensors (especially for dynamic range). 10. Class leading rolling shutter (?) 11. PDAF not as effective in 4k as it is in 1080p (only a few people seem to have noticed this, apparently). 12. Not the most impressive battery life. Ok, I got bored writing this. There are a few more points. Maybe you could fill them out when you read this. Hehehe.1 point
