What's wrong with star wipes and venetian blinds? Star Wars was a seminal film and it didn't even have those!

  2. That thing may have the best modern output hands down of all the new cameras. That stuff is impressive as heck in that video. Wow, and the CS is special also. I can only imagine a $10,000 Dollar Leica lens on a S1R.

    $10 Adobe Plan Gone

Mother: What do you want to do when you leave school? Kid: I think I want to study medicine and become a doctor. Mother: Well, that's great and all, and it's important to have dreams, but have you considered a career in IT? Kid: But I like helping people, like when grandma was sick.. Mother: You father and I have done the sums, and we know that doctors get paid very well but if you worked for Adobe, over the decades the family discount actually makes it a more sensible option....

  8. I don't do video, but I took this camera out at night shooting at ISO 3200 and it has nicest 4K I've seen and the IBIS is really impressive. I'm traveling more this year and this camera definitely make me want to shoot more video than my 5D IV ever did. I did one paid photo shoot, one afternoon and took it to Disneyland all day and it did not feel heavy at all. I was nervous because of so much people on the internet complain about the weight but after trying at Panasonic event and using it for extended period of time, it feel so good and balance with a heavy lenses like Canon 24-70 2.8 II & Sigma 105 1.4 Art with hand strap and neck strap. I don't have an issue with Canon 5D IV weight either. You should give it a try before listening to fanboys on the internet. I really like the ergonomic, features, and some thoughtful Panasonic has. The dynamic range & ISO on this thing is amazing compared to my Canon 5D IV/EOS R.

  10. Wow, so I've finally caught up with the latest season. The show has completely lost its edge. The latest episode felt like a Marvel movie spin off written by first year film and art students. I remember the first 3 seasons as being mesmerizing, engaging television. You cared about the characters and kinda dreaded watching the next episode for fear of what could happen. The intrigue and the suspense was soooo soo good. We started to see the problem in season 7 but season 8 is complete garbage. They took an extra year to write this trash? This should be a text book example of how not to do a critically acclaimed book adaptation before the book series is done. After they left the pages of the books behind the show has plummeted in imagination and view experience. Season 8 gets a 5/10 from me and EP4 a 2/10 Lazy television award. Who was the night king again? Ah who cares. We only spent the last 7 SEASONS building a story about his looming threat and then...LOL! The details make this story special and engaging. Not just the marvel action scenes.

  11. Simple occasion! Private deal from a sister of a Portuguese private seller when he sold me a few MFT lenses moving to new Canon's FF mirrorless system. New introductions always mean bargains in the existent gear. The woman wanted a new Canon unit as well. I took the chance, she asked 200 euros and I offered 300 euros for a bundle to comprehend that one and a Panasonic's 1" FZ1000 she had in hands as well. Reason also why bashing new releases of a different manufacturer is pure meaningless, plain stupid and fully nonsense : -) @BTM_Pix That's a great find! I almost feel compelled to not resist to keep going my collection of outdated *cough cough* g̶a̶d̶g̶e̶t̶s̶ capture devices... LOL Really : -)

  12. Just dreadful. Not a fan of her, but Dany deserved better. Her fall into the role of mad queen feels out of nowhere (we had one foreshadowing thus far?). Tyrion seems determined to be useless till the end. Bran's tuned out. And the dialogue was sooo tedious.

  13. How it looks is almost immaterial to the lousiness of the writing. Man, I really wanted to like this show a few years ago; seemed like it was actually building to an immersive compelling narrative. I would forgive them their trope-y foibles thinking they had a handle on the overarching storytelling. Hoo boy, in hindsight all the red flags are there. Another example of production craft elevating script mediocrity. NOPE. American Soap Operas are better at writing stuff than these guys.

    Wireless storage access

I think the RavPower FileHub is a very good all round flexible solution for general use. We used to have something made by Kingston years ago primarily for long journeys where we had a load of films and music on a USB stick and we could each watch or listen to different content on our tablets but as it had an ethernet port I also used it for work to create a private hotspot for wireless file transfer from my cameras to my laptop in stadiums that only had wired internet. For media sharing on trips we now use a Sandisk Connect Wireless USB stick Its a much more convenient form factor and powers/recharges from a USB port. I have just ordered the 4TB version of the WD Wireless Pro ostensibly for use with LumaFusion as it is supported directly within the app so that you can be viewing the content on it (or connected devices via its USB port) within LumaFusion without having to copy it all to the iPad camera roll first so you can get on with editing faster. It then imports the sections of the clips that you are actually using in the background and then can output the entire project back to the Connect Pro drive when you are done. I am not expecting blindingly fast transfer across the wireless ( and I know that @Robert Collins is very underwhelmed with his ) but for my specific application of using it with LumaFusion, that tighter integration with the app should actually make it overall a little bit faster but certainly a provide more convenient and less clunky workflow. Well, thats the theory anyway. I'll let you know the reality soon !

  17. There was a Western here called Gunsmoke that ran for years and years. And it was all shot on film. The early stuff was in B&W and it is just jaw dropping beautiful even on re runs. No clue the resolution, but man it was, and is special. That picture does not do it any justice. https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/tv-show-gunsmoke?mediatype=photography&page=2&phrase=tv show gunsmoke&sort=mostpopular&license=rf,rm&recency=anydate&suppressfamilycorrection=true

  18. If rolling shutter is a concern, then I absolutely would avoid the a6400. But as a stills camera, the a6400 walks the Fuji, especially when you consider the full ecosystem. The sensor is better/sharper/cleaner in low light. The Sigma trinity is 1/3 the price - and the 56mm 1.4 Sigma is a better lens than the 56mm 1.2 except for distortion. I never miss a shot with my a6400, I miss shots with my X-H1. But to be fair, we're splitting hairs at this point because everything is so good.

    Is 4K Worth The Tradeoff?

FWIW pretty much all classic American TV shows were shot on film during the 80s/90s. Problem is the footage back then was immediately re-scanned into NTSC (480p) for cheaper/faster digital editing, fx, scoring & network distribution. Today only major blockbuster shows (like Seinfeld etc) can afford the complex job of getting "remastered" to HD/UHD.

    Is 4K Worth The Tradeoff?

Seinfeld was shot on film and looks awesome remastered. FUN FACT: If you're watching a 16:9 HD version, you're actually seeing parts of the frame that were originally matted out! NSFW example.

  22. Our monitors literally are inches away from us though.. For me, the big difference is the HDR, not so much the resolution. I think OLED makes such a huge difference to all that; human eyes can adapt to darkness (except GOT!) but they can not stand too much brightness, so the absolute black is more valuable to higher brightness technology. Also, have you people noticed how bad the 80s and 90s and even early 00s, series look right now? They are almost difficult to follow, while the 60s and 70s remastered from film look stunning!

  24. you can use EF-S lenses in any mode but it won't "reduce the crop". automatically jumps to 1.74x for video. RS stays about the same. Bummer on both, i know!

No internet at home at the moment. Which kinda sucks. Have had another enlarger lens from russia turn up. It is a m42 mount 50mm 2.8 and has 12 blades in the aperture i believe. Hope to give it a workout shortly and post some pics. Also learnt how to melt lead with just some twigs and leaves and a piece of pipe for a draft. plan on doing a vid and making a utube channel for fame and fortune ? Due to a safety scare won't be doing much more of that till i get some protective gear ? hit a speed bump with the clamp for the anamorphic lens. getting late here think i'll get some shuteye. Night all.

  27. In short: A: They are all actually great at something B: But none of them great at everything And the answer is there never will be because in the near future someone will be criticizing the crop on the 12k 120p or the fact that Camera X only has 17 stops of IBIS compared with Camera Y. Etc. Or just go out and use what is currently best for you and enjoy it. Which everyone knows is the Fuji XT3. Despite no IBIS. And it’s not FF. But APART from that... ?

  28. Ah, the old "it's bad, but intentionally so." Solo was too dark in many scenes, and it wasn't a question of not calibrating my TV, or watching on an ipad, or even compression. I saw it on blu ray on a 60" TV that is within reasonable calibration, in a dark room. It's funny because the Godfather, a movie famous for "underexposure," is so much easier on the eyes--because it's not about darkening a scene, it's about lighting it so that the viewer gets the impression of darkness. ...is exactly right.

  29. Camera seems to tick all of my boxes and I really like this fellas style. It does look huge in his tiny hands but it sounds like they haven't compromised on ergonomics, build quality or the IBIS and from all accounts it is a great camera to hold and use. Really need to get my hands on one to try, local photo stores don't hold it in stock here, have to order it which is a bit of a pain and isn't going to help them sell any Don't personally see what the problem is with its size, with full frame lenses you want a camera with a bit of heft - the Sony A7 is way too small, lenses seem to dangle off it (and the IBIS is rubbish) - to me the Canon 5d is a great ergonomic camera for taking photos with (not so much for video cause of the lack of EVF - I like to look through the viewfinder), and no one complains about its weight - the Panasonic S1 and 24-105 lens is lighter than Canon 5d with 24-105

  30. We're not watching a documentary. A movie about war in the dark, shouldn't be as dark as a real war in the dark.

  31. I watched it on a calibrated 55" OLED TV in a dark room and it was still to dark in some scenes! Heard that the made it dark to keep the vfx budget from going crazy.

  33. Right now there is only one FF camera that can shoot 10-bit internal video, and it does not look like this is going to change any time soon. The A7Siii is going to need a much larger body if it wants to shoot 4K 10-bit with no time-limit, and I don't know how many Sony folks would be happy about that. ( certainly none of the still photo fans ) And then there is only one camera with 5-axis IBIS that can produce smooth handheld 4K footage, so it's going to take a few more iterations for the other brands to catch up with Panasonic DUAL IS stabilization. Panasonic is only one month in with it's S1 / S1R cameras, so the story may change by the end of the year when Sigma will have a bunch of native L-mount lenses on the market. I'm never going back to shooting 8-bit video, especially with cameras that can't produce smooth handheld footage without a gimbal.

  34. Mistake 1: Canon is using 4-5 year old technology. Mistake 2: Nikon is using 1-2 year old technology. The Sony FF are basically computers with a lens mount. Their handling is worst of breed. CaNikon had the opportunity to offer the first mirrorless FF cameras that handled like cameras and they threw it away. Sad.

  35. Its going to be fascinating to see what the XDCAM management team will "allow" the Alpha management team to give the new A7S-III. A Sony manager fir Russia was stating that he thinks the A7S-III wont have "deep color" as that is reserved for the XDCAM FS series only. I suspect he means 10bit. I heard at NAB that Panasonic is very receptive to the S1 having 4k raw over HDMI and that it IS definetely comming to the S1 this year. Those same sources told me that Sony is not willing to go that far right now. Atomos is pressuring them but Sony is not buying into the raw idea for Alpha. (The next FS probably) Will Alpha be allowed to have highly compressed 10bit internal recording or will it only be granted 10bit video HDMI? I would love to be a fly on the wall in these Alpha/XDCAM manager board room meetings!! 2019 is a massive political fight for managers inside Sony and Panasonic. Nikon?....no no, HDMI raw was an EASY choice!!!

  36. Yes good points Kisaha. 2) especially. Then again, the Nikon FTZ adapter doesn't seem to be helping the Z6/Z7 sales. My Z7 cost me 3800 euros. 5 months later, I am struggling to shift it for £2300 on eBay and it's practically new with all the original packaging. I am a bit livid about that. Perhaps the worst investment I've ever made... Z6 just seemed to kill it. Way too similar. Way too expensive on the Z7 pricing. At the least, the Z7 should have been a different body style aimed only at pros.

  37. It was definitely dim. I was waiting for a very big file to show up (5GB) and even that was too dark. I watched on my OLED on a custom day profile (it is brighter than my usual night custom) with dim lights and it was very difficult to follow at times. The dragons fight also, that was a mess. They should have used some colors or something to make the dragons stand out, same for the soldiers. The strategy on the battlefield was a complete mess also. I read about history and historical battles, and the whole thing was disappointing. They didn't do any reconnaissance, they send their shock troops (cavalry) first without even knowing the enemy (cavalry never utilized with such a way in history), they had only one line of defense just a few meters from their walls, they had their machines in the second or 3rd line(wtf!), while the dead were at the ring of fire they were just looking at them (wtf2!use your arrows!), totaly mis-used their tactical advantage of 2 dragons (air support), the strategy in the walls was subpar, at best e.t.c The whole thing was impressive though and the director kept the rythm very well in my opinion. Certainly great television. Took them 55 nights to shoot, by the way. 55 for a TV episode must be somw kind of record. What happened to the Direwolf?! It was there for 333 frames, and then gone as a Ghost!
