Couldn't help myself, so I just bought a Sun Zoom 70-210mm f3.8. I figured that it's probably not too bad, and even if it is it wasn't expensive, so no harm no foul. I also had a re-think about camera inserts and came up with a new plan for getting more lenses into my bag The edit is coming together, despite my comedy of errors in planning, packing, and shooting!2 points -
Yup, I bought my Samyang 50mm from them and if anything they undersold it in their description. It was my first purchase from them and it was a great experience.2 points

I suppose it depends on the individual. For me personally, having the controller under the right hand for transport control, clip marking and inserting is far more natural than dragging on a screen. The frame advance with the jog wheel and the jump to next/previous clips are a big win as are the shuttle and play/pause controls because nything that stops me accidentally touching the wrong part of the screen and dragging a clip instead of moving round the timeline counts as a big win! You can see from the reaction to the new BM keyboard (if you ignore the price ) combined with the new Clip page that a combination of tactile surface and simplified interface can be a productivity win and I kind of see this with LumaFusion as being in the same vein. As an FYI, here is the actual prototype unit with its default key map, although this will be user definable in the production version. I have finally run out of the electric blue filament for my 3D printer so I was able to print this one in black!2 points

My wife and I talked about buying a Sony X3000 last night, and I said to wait for next weeks paycheck because there's no hurry. While I doubt it, I really hope it's an RX0 style Sony X3000 & GoPro Hero 7 killer! DJI are perfectly positioned to make an action camera. I would have bought an Osmo pocket if it had a wider lens and waterproof housing. But like @Cinegain says, it's probably a submarine.1 point

What's that saying? "We Have Done So Much with So Little for So Long, that Now We Can Do Anything with Nothing".. it's from the military apparently, but in the face of having to get the job done under difficult situations with less and less resources without compromising the output, I think there are parallels that can be drawn1 point -

We did live streaming, we usually only had regular cable internet connections because everything was so low budget/DIY. So there were times when a stream would crap out due to internet issues at the venue. I've live streamed a 6 hour wrestling event using a 4G hot spot before! ? Money is in short demand, expectations are high though. I kinda mastered getting the most out of little!1 point -

No, they need that pro model to sell those pro lenses. The delay is just R&D / sensor tech related. Canon admitted in their Q1 financial report released few days ago that EOS R was rushed to meet demand/competition.1 point

HLG has smoother tonal transitions. Some claim it has more dynamic range as well. From what I've seen its a bit harder to grade than Vlog. However you can always use a transform LUT like the Leeming Lut One. Its definitely a good option if you'd rather not pay for Vlog.1 point -

I've found Blackmagic's tutorial videos on youtube to be an excellent way to get a grip on Resolve. I went cold turkey since I didn't have anything critical looming and just worked my way through them, ignoring what I normally do in PP and FCP. After a few small projects I'm starting to feel really comfortable with it. I have an 8-day travel shoot starting next week, that will be a series of 2-3 min pieces and a longer wrap, all will be done in the new Cut tab. So far R16 has been really stable for me. Love it. And its free. Amazing. Chris1 point -
LumaFusion users - can you help with a few questions?
BTM_Pix reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
After watching the video again while tinkering with an edit I'm interested. The Blackmagic keyboard looked interesting as well, until I saw the price. My greatest source of frustration is setting in/out points on a clip in the preview window before dropping it into the timeline, and trimming the ends of clips in the timeline since it usually involves a lot of scrolling or pinching to zoom in and out - frame advance would really help there. And I could use the shuttle with my iMac. I'll keep an eye out for when its available. Chris1 point -
did some ringing around, then drove to the other side of town. found a place to machine me an adapter from the elmoscope to a standard filter thread. The elmoscope is 50mm on the rear thread, it seems the pitch is .75 as far as we have been able to ascertain at the moment. if dimensions change i'll post them for posterity later . Most popular thread sizes for cameras seem to be 49mm or 52mm then 55mm which makes the 50mm of the elmoscope a bit of an oddball . I think i may have to incorporate some kind of sleeve arrangement in the adapter, as if i can thread an adapter onto the back of the elmoscope i can pretty much guarantee the anamorphics in the scope wont align correctly. I will give it some thought over the next few days and proceed ahead next week. Its kinda exciting to being so close to being an anamorphic videographer?1 point

nice views, very pretty country i liked watching it its nice to see something different from time to time . i wish i could say after the rain but we are in drought here . I would quite literally kill for some of that water flowing down that ravine ? seems almost criminal to have a porshe sitting under a tarp. if you need a stable, i have one right here where you could park that porshe and be all nice and safe and out of the weather ? A mate of mine somehow managed to kill his gopro5 a few weeks ago as well. so your not alone1 point -
NAB 2019 predictions and major talking points - BMPCC 4K Pro anyone?!
JordanWright reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Not much plausible deniability about whether you have opened the case if you sent that in for repair. Although I strongly suspect whoever did it would be fine with doing his own repairs anyway.1 point -
The drive itself is USB3 when connected to your PC but the port for external card reader devices like the one shown there is USB2. For my application using it in LumaFusion that bothers me less because the determining overall speed factor is the wireless transfer which is slower than USB2 anyway.1 point

I watched this the other day, haven't tried it myself yet.. but I wish Blackmagic or at least @CaptainHook would come up with a solution that didn't impact skin so much.. I'd have thought the developers of Davinci Resolve could implement a fix within their own software for their own camera..?1 point

That doesn't sound very 'non-destructive'. Hopefully they'll release a how to.1 point

PP/FCPX is like driving a car, Resolve is like flying the space shuttle. In terms of Editing they are more closely matched in power and complexity, but in the Colour and Fusion stuff it's a whole different beast. Workflow is an interesting topic though, and you're likely experiencing a combination of these two factors: You have a workflow that you've optimised over time for yourself and it suits the way you work and the projects you do and PP supports that PP is designed in a certain way and you've learned to fit into that workflow, adapting how you shoot, edit, colour, mix, and export to fit into the way that PP wants you to operate Every package offers a combination of these two factors and Resolve is no different. The biggest challenge with changing (between any two NLEs) is that at first you will try to do things the way you're used to doing them and you will find that there are barriers / limitations / annoyances to doing things that way, and it's frustrating. It's only over time that you may come to learn that the new NLE doesn't have the barriers / limitations / annoyances that your previous one used to, and you can start including these additional freedoms into your workflow. Understanding the opportunities that these represent, re-interpreting your workflow to understand which things you decided to do vs which things your previous NLE forced you to do, and then adapting your workflow to take advantage of the new things that you've chosen to adopt all takes a long time. I have no idea about how editing compares between FCPX/PP/Resolve, but I know that the colour and image post-processing in Resolve is absolutely no comparison and it's so powerful that you couldn't learn everything about it even in a whole lifetime. The key to learning and adapting quickly is to read about other peoples workflows, think deeply about how you work and why, what end result you want to achieve, and do a bunch of test films in Resolve where you try shooting / editing / colouring / mixing / delivering in a different way. Not only will you learn Resolve much faster, but you'll also expand your skillset and get a deeper understanding on how you work and why.1 point -

I don't do video, but I took this camera out at night shooting at ISO 3200 and it has nicest 4K I've seen and the IBIS is really impressive. I'm traveling more this year and this camera definitely make me want to shoot more video than my 5D IV ever did. I did one paid photo shoot, one afternoon and took it to Disneyland all day and it did not feel heavy at all. I was nervous because of so much people on the internet complain about the weight but after trying at Panasonic event and using it for extended period of time, it feel so good and balance with a heavy lenses like Canon 24-70 2.8 II & Sigma 105 1.4 Art with hand strap and neck strap. I don't have an issue with Canon 5D IV weight either. You should give it a try before listening to fanboys on the internet. I really like the ergonomic, features, and some thoughtful Panasonic has. The dynamic range & ISO on this thing is amazing compared to my Canon 5D IV/EOS R.1 point -

2020 is when Canon is predicted to have their EOS R Pro cameras - high resolution model and EOS R pro. They will have their trinity lenses and 85 1.2 RF. The rumored price of 85 1.2 RF is supposed to be $3250 with tax included. I think Canon anticipated less sale and price it accordingly to economy of scale. Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Nikon all have pro and cons and I think their next model will address some of the complains. I bought the Panasonic S1 because it come closest to the perfect camera I want now while waiting for the next big thing if those companies ever deliver. I got the S1 for $2000 while waiting to see how it unfold. I'm still reluctant to commit to buying native lenses because 2020 landscape will be different.1 point -
Game of Thrones ... because why not

Haha! So true! The first seasons were a great mix of medieval history with a spice of fantasy but then the thing went downhill very fast. What happened to the Snakes? They created a whole chapter that didn't exist in the books for no reason at all. That went nowhere like so many sub stories, and suddenly, the few that have left are going to the North, to various castles and we are never going to see them again, while some crazy fools go down to King's Landing that something random will happen. It seems to me that Benioff and CO, are just lucky to have the parents (his father is Stephen F£€$ing Friedman, for - his - God's shake! ) they have, and that gives them ultimate success, just because..when they had to do their part, failed miserably (also check Weiss's early tries, most of them were cancelled projects!). Benioff took one of the most established and influential storys of all time - the Iliad - and turned it into a mindless thing called Troy. How can you mess that? It is been studied and told for thousands of years! Welcome to Hollywood..1 point -

In other news, the bull riding footage I shot on the weekend from the city-slickers-visit-the-country-yee-ha trip is falling into place using the new Cut page in Resolve 16. A few problems: I got 'out of sync' where I either double-pressed the shutter or didn't press it, and ended up recording the bits in-between the action and not the action itself I blame the mic placement because I didn't have my eye pressed right up to the eyepiece, which means you can't see the edges of the frame and thus the blinking red record light. I also need to be more careful as I've done that before with other cameras without the same excuse. I got the really important shots, and I'm only making a highlights video for fun so I still have plenty of footage, so it's all good, just.... *facepalm* I was shooting straight-into a floodlight, so the vintage Minolta 135mm 2.8 flares like an absolute @#$!$#% so my contrast is all shot to hell, and because I was recording in 4k50 8-bit Cine-D I don't have the advantage of the 10-bit to save the day, plus the ISO was probably riding up a bit and it was only 150Mbps too, so the image leaves a little to be desired. I'll have to work out how heavily I push the image to try and recover a normal amount of contrast. The car was really full, so I only took one bag, and due to this restriction I only took two lenses - the 17.5mm f0.95 for people / low-light and the 135mm f2.8 for closeups. I almost took the Helios 58mm and I really wish I had because the 135mm was a bit too zoomed in to catch the rider and the bull in the same frame. I partially blame the camera insert I use as it doesn't have many pockets so I might need to look at a new insert or new bag. Here's a couple of frame grabs just for fun. The first is out of the flare range and has a bit of contrast added, but the second is unedited and shows the levels and the flare. The third is the 17.5mm. They are from my 720p proxy files so don't judge the image quality.1 point -

That thing may have the best modern output hands down of all the new cameras. That stuff is impressive as heck in that video. Wow, and the CS is special also. I can only imagine a $10,000 Dollar Leica lens on a S1R.1 point -
Most of Panasonic's 4K cameras even the consumer ones also have a pretty neat live crop mode to fake zoom and movement. The downside is that they are done in only two preset time periods so extending that out to a joystick control for manual operation would be a great option or even just making the time period fully adjustable would probably make it far more usable.1 point

Thanks for the feedback. Here is a sneak peek at what I've just finished developing. It is an interface that you plug the Contour Shuttle devices into which then enables you to use them via Bluetooth LE in LumaFusion to control it.1 point
