Looks like a GoPro copy, and the 7 has insane stabilization. I have it and it really works. Really happy with the footage I get. On my previous GoPros I was always disappointed with how the image looked on my computer VS gopro promotional videos. Not anymore. I think the IS accounts for 90% of that and the IQ is also better. Let’s see what DJI brings, raw maybe? But useless for me on an action cam. i don’t get why they wouldn’t put a 1” sensor. The P4 and Mavic Pro have very small cameras yet 1” sensors.2 points

DJI challenging GoPro?

If true, sort of sounds like suicide unless they have some groundbreaking tech no one has even thought of. It just seems to be a...GoPro knockoff. We already have all kinds of those now.2 points -
Eos R finally closer to it's actual value
Kisaha and one other reacted to currensheldon for a topic
I've tried both C200 + EOS R, but decided to stick with my EVA-1 + GH5, maybe replacing the latter with the S1 once the V-Log, 10-bit update rolls out. But having three mounts across the same brand (EVA: EF, MFT, and L-Mount) is a headache. I love Canon but the GH5, S1, and Fuji mirrorless cameras feel so much more professional, robust, and tactile than the EOS R - and are fun to use instead of a chore. I'd love it if Canon came out strong with their pro bodies, but if I had been holding my breath I would have passed out many times the past 5-years. I AM holding my breath for a Panasonic MFT video/cinema camera OR a Fuji X-Mount cinema/video camera. Whoever does it first, I'll go all in. Until then, the EVA-1 and GH5 are getting the job done.2 points -

Eos R finally closer to it's actual value

I would be happy with 1DX2 specs (no crop) + IBIS in a mirrorless body with dual card slots & C-Log 1/2/3. (IBIS is already confirmed btw) Canon obviously have to keep developing their tech. I expect quad-pixel AF. Better DR/ISO/RS etc.. We'll just have to wait & see what they come up with. If they drop the ball on video in the pro model, I'm out too. Either A7III+FS7 or S1+EVA1. Not super keen on either alternative atm, but it is getting tiresome to feel held back.2 points -

I wonder what Canon can bring to a pro model to be competitive, presuming it will have a much higher price than the EOS-R and the rest of the market? The Canon main selling points over the years in my opinion have been the colour, AF and lenses... The EOS-R does have nice Canon colour but in my opinion Panasonic S1 and the XT3 have now surpassed them Their AF is no longer a clear market leader - Sony look like they are overtaking them They have relied on their huge ef and efs lens range that people already own but this is a new mount and so this is no longer such a great selling point - they are giving away the adaptor with the camera now but as you say most people will hang onto their ef lenses The DR and RS and crop is way behind the competition at the moment as are their video specs - I'm not convinced they have good enough sensor tech to get that back. It feels like they are being left behind. I would love to be wrong because I have a lot of Canon lenses and a couple of their cameras and if they they could create a decent stills and video hybrid camera I would buy it even if it was a bit more expensive than the competition. But I don't think they really care about the video side in their stills cameras, and I have little faith in them turning it round and so think I'm going to sell all my Canon stuff, just not sure whether to go Panasonic or Fuji at the moment2 points -
I know what you mean, its a completely ridiculous post isn't it? I mean, obviously he'd use the time machine to go back and not cast his daughter in Godfather III.2 points

A ton of different GoPro competitors but when you stack them side-by-side, the Hero 7 Black has better image quality than all of them.1 point -
Right but the previous poster noted he was using an A7III + an FS7. I'd imagine a Z6 + an external monitor is a more manageable kit. And a Z6 with no external when 8 bit will do. I feel like saying "I need a good hybrid because I also shoot a lot of stills, but when I need 10 bit 422 for significant color grades, I have to record externally...so instead I'll buy a huge $7000 cine camera" is missing the point a little bit.1 point

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

I use this: https://www.amazon.com/Ansso-Battery-Supply-Aviation-Connector/dp/B07MZLRKRN/ You can mount it directly to a cage or put it on a rail block. I prefer to use V Mount at this point though. If I'm going to rig the camera up, I prefer to have tons of juice.1 point -

Yet, he still pretending as a filmmaker. This comment made me laugh: "I am the second AC for Egypt's largest cinema production in the last 5 years "Qalb el Asad" and own a video production company." He was born in 1995. How come he got the largest company at 20?? Seriously? He also believes Canon cameras are the best which replace cinema cameras. I cant even find this company "Qalb el Asad" at all. Teaching cinematography is also joking as he knows nothing about it. Of course, he is Ebrahim Saadawi jr who is 25 years old. You can check his birthday on his FB. It seems he never paid back right? I really hate this person being active on DPR. Can anyone deal with this person?1 point

I have been finding the Sony IMX586 and Samsung GM1 lacking in low light capabilities and dynamic range. The dynamic range iasues could be due to issues regarding more processing power required from SoCs. Anyways, Samsung has apparently dealt with that by introducing the next generation of the 48MP sensor with better lowlight and dynamic range. MORE importantly it has introduced the Next Generation of smartphone sensor(s) because it has a sensor that does 64MP at Full Resolution or 16MP in Quad Bayer, has much better low light and a claimed WAY higher dynamic range in HDR of 100dB or about 16.5 Stops. If Samsung would allow HEIF or any other 10-bit codec (not sure a smartphone would be able to create 12-Bit RAW out of HDR images), it could help make these photos easier to work with in post. The IMX586 sensor's 12MP photos already look much sharper than most other smartphone photos (they look more like 15-18MP photos in terms of detail), so the 16MP still could be even better eith detail. Some users have ported the Google Camera HDR on the Redmi Note 7 Pro to get 48MP HDR, and the details, and results in general don't look bad. It also seems to have Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) like on the Alexa sensor (?) I hope they make smartphone lenses that are much sharper and able to resolve way more detail than the ones we have presently. I hate carrying that cannot be carried in a denim or shorts' pocket, on a vacation or private travel. Hopefully we won't have to carry anything beyond a smartphone soon. https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-to-bring-industrys-highest-resolution-for-mobile-cameras-with-new-64mp-isocell-image-sensor1 point

Another super busy week…ugh…but I did manage to get a couple of new tracks done. Free as always to use with attribution: On my Horror/Surreal page, we have: CREEPY ACTION – (Looping) – This track might sound cool in a quick moving horror game…or perhaps something else that combines action with creepiness. It came out pretty well…if you need something like this, give it a try. https://soundimage.org/horrorsurreal/ On my Puzzle Music 4 page: CRYSTAL PUZZLES – (Looping) – This track might sound nice in, well, a puzzle game involving crystals….or perhaps other shimmering objects, light rays, etc. It has a techno feel to it as well. Should sound pretty cool under sound fx. https://soundimage.org/puzzle-music-4/ Btw, if anyone happens to have kids (or know someone who does) I’ve created a learning series that teaches them environmental stewardship in a fun way through stories and characters. It was my first try at making films with a DSLR…(they can be very challenging to work with in the field)…but I think they came out pretty well. The organization I made them for was very happy with them and uses the films all the time…hopefully others can benefit from them as well. Please feel free to share with teachers, family, friends or anyone you know who might find them useful. https://soundimage.org/dunes-island/ Enjoy!1 point -

DJI challenging GoPro?
graphicnatured reacted to JurijTurnsek for a topic
DJI never had to worry about water resistance and heat dissipation, so entering the action can market would not be a simple R&D project. It does not make much sense, because they cannot use the same cameras one their drones and the action cam market is already very saturated. It does not make sense economically for them and they are not drowning in cash after their supply chain affair.1 point -

That's old news. They've been making a rebound. Who knows what the future holds, but the Hero7 Black is awesome and considering history, a new cam could be unveiled in a few months.1 point -
GoPros, and probably other action cams, sink by design. When you're diving 40m underwater, the last thing you want is your camera to float to the top. But seriously. I really like using my Osmo Pocket for family stuff, but there's no way I'd buy another camera in the consumer class from DJI. In my experience with them, it's all about a money grab. Their USBc-3.5mm input is like €40, and they've disabled all third party ones, that cost like €3. Then there's the whole watermarking your own footage with their logo if you use the 'Story Mode' or whatever that's called. - anyway, that's off topic. It'll be interesting to see what they have.1 point

Yeah, interesting stuff. I'm really hoping that they've waited and taken a real look at how people use these cameras IRL rather than how we want to use them (like in the ads). In a sense, if they'd have developed a product strategy and split up all the common uses for a very compact camera between the Osmo Pocket and an action camera then that would be very encouraging. I think GoPro kind of started with the idea of taking selfies while surfing and then in the digital phase of their company looked to the best smartphone tech to package up and sell at a premium. They were kind of driven by what the tech could do, rather than what people wanted. If DJI started with what people wanted, which I think is primarily around "tiny cameras that go everywhere" then that fits drones, a non-waterproof camera-gimbal combo for hand-holding in non-extreme situations, and an action camera that would be for extreme situations of high G-forces and water/dust etc. If they make a wide-angle action camera then their setup would be complete then you could take an Osmo Pocket, a Spark/Mavic, and their action cam and have all the travel/home/holiday film-making you want. To that end, my guess is: Wide-angle Go-Pro like size and mount options EIS not OIS What will be interesting is if they go for a larger sensor like the RX0 to improve low-light, and what connectivity they provide. I agree with @SR that the innovation has been lacking for a while in action camera space so if DJI have really gone back to customer usage and re-thought the entire thing, then maybe we'll see something innovative. After that there's still in their lineup for a 360 camera1 point

Full frame rival sales figures = grim reading for everyone vs Sony
Mako Sports reacted to Cliff Totten for a topic
Sony will liscence phase detect AF on their sensors to Olumpus and Nikon with no trouble. But,...there is no way they will EVER liscense it to Panasonic. They will say, "we are happy to sell you our sensor and even liscence you 4k 30p and 60p in 10bit....but we will force you to keep contrast AF only....no PDAF for you!" To my knowledge, the only phase detect AF cameras on planet Earth are Canon cameras....or. any other phone or camera that buys Sony sensors. That's it, if you are not Canon than you get your PDAF through your Sony sensor liscense and contract of sale. Panny is deliberetely left out in the cold. They dont "believe" contrast detect is better...no, the truth is that Panny has no choice in the matter.1 point -

Some interesting comments on the photorumors site about this (https://photorumors.com/2019/05/08/new-dji-teaser-new-action-camera-or-underwater-drone/) I think it could be an action camera cause an underwater drone may have a much smaller market. An action cam with the Mavic 2 Pro capabilities, could be a guaranteed runaway success, especially if the price point is right.1 point

In all fairness if he'd have been able to get hold of a C700 in 1979 then I'm pretty sure he would have spent most of his time zipping about in the time machine he'd used to aquire it rather than pissing about making films. Maybe you should get a C700 do a reboot of it with a more modern man sensibility to the dialogue. "I love the smell of lip balm in the morning" and "Charlie don't surf with Firefox no more since the plug in debacle" would work.1 point

Sony A9 vs. Sony A7SII 4k Video
webrunner5 reacted to tellure for a topic
I shot a few tests last weekend on the A9 to test object tracking in video with the new firmware and it was really impressive. I was shooting my wife at ~35mm f/2.8 from a few feet away up to less than half a foot, so fairly shallow DOF. She was moving forward and back, left and right, and the tracking was keeping her almost perfectly in focus the whole time. Only when she moved almost out of the frame did it start to lose her, but regained focus in less than a second. I'm excited to try using this in some more real-world situations like on a gimbal, but so far it looks to be what I've always wanted - awesomely accurate tracking AF with touch-focus. Huge kudos to Sony for adding this in a firmware update. Now if they would only add picture profiles so we could get an EOS HD color profile on the A9...1 point -

Sigma MC-21 EF and SA To L Mount Adapters

This an absolute cock-up. Lucy has once again pulled the football away from Charlie Brown. Leica is making the SL into a dead-end system, given the glacier-like speed of release and extreme expense of their lenses. I love my SL for use with the 24/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH and 35/1.2 Nokton VM II, both in manual focus. But I can't justify the acquisition of single primes costing more than a Canon R plus faster RF lens. This looks like someone got to Sigma to preserve Leica's market for its own L-lenses.1 point -
