Ebrahim Saadawi, the gift which keeps on giving! I dunno. While it was a common belief that Australia didn't exist, most people do now believe in its existence. But there are still a few who believe it doesn't exist: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/shortcuts/2018/apr/15/australia-doesnt-exist-and-other-bizarre-geographic-conspiracies-that-wont-go-away Honestly I'm more worried about how New Zealand seems to be getting wiped out: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapsWithoutNZ/5 points

If it wasn't for it being entirely the wrong mount for you, I'd definitely say have a look at the 7Artisans 28mm f1.4 which has been on my radar for a while but been waiting for more reviews. https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-7artisans-28mm-1-4-fe-plus/ The other lens I've been looking at that might be worth a look even though it is a zoom is the Sigma ART 24-35mm f2 I was definitely going to buy a (cheap) used EF mount one of these for my SL later this week when I'm in Japan but this whole Sigma MC21 fiasco has thrown a spanner in the works for that but with it being EF it won't go to waste if I see a cheap enough one. One of the shops I know has the 7Artisans 28mm f1.4 in stock so I'll be having a look at that in the flesh. So expect some sample images from one of these two roughly this time next week. Or both3 points

Yeah, it is definitely relative but the weight without the added benefit of image stabilization makes it a little impractical for me. But as you suggested, it’s really 3 primes in one, so the convenience factor is a definite plus. Right now, I’m only looking for the Samyang 24mm 1.4 we’ve spoken about in the past while I sell off a bunch of unneeded glass. Then I’m going to reevaluate what I have left, and what I need based on upcoming projects, including the Samyang and see if there’s anything else I can get rid of... Then... I may look into replacing all of my 28mm lenses with the Nikkor 28mm 1.4. That has been a dream lens of mine but a little too pricey for my meager skills. But if it’s my only 28mm, it may be doable. My ultimate goal is to have a small EF set and then a few of my favorite primes of varying focal lengths with the ultimate goal of 10 lenses or less. I’d love it if I was the type of person that could get by with a Sigma zoom and a prime but I just don’t know how realistic that is.2 points

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Shirozina and one other reacted to Jim Giberti for a topic
Braw is brilliant. But you can mangle it in post like any codec if you make bad decisions. It was obvious from the first time I tried it that the extended video LUT was useless with too much contrast and poor highlight handling. So I never used it. I graded a piece last week using nothing but primaries. Exposing well in Braw gives you amazing latitude and control in Resolve.2 points -

Too big and too heavy are all a bit relative to me considering the rocket launcher sized lenses I've had to hawk around for work Funnily enough though, I saw the lens in the flesh for the first time the other day in a display case at a camera shop and it was actually smaller than I had been expecting. I've just used the camerasize.com tool to see how it fares to a lens that I use a lot which is the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 and they are actually reasonably similar size and weight wise. Based on my experiences with the 14-24mm, its still a bit of a lump (though thats not always a bad thing stability wise) but I wouldn't be worried about using it all day. I'm looking at it really as three f2 primes, and all points in between of course, so for me there is an overall saving in terms of size and weight in the bag from carrying multiple primes which is often more of a priority than the size and weight when its in use. Doesn't hurt not having to change lenses (24 to 35 is definitely a regular swap for me) not just for speed and convenience but also in keeping the dust/out of focus birds off the sensor which I'm far more plagued with here in Spain than I was in the UK.2 points -
Once in China I met a Tibetan guy who told me the following: In China there are 4 categories of products: the best quality ones go to the government and the military, then there are the things that go to you Western people (he was talking to me), then the things that go to the Chinese and general export and finally the lowest quality things that go to Tibetans, Uygurs, Mongols2 points

And especially the first video showcases all the reasons I'm neither using Braw nor BMD's film colorspace V4. Harsh roll-off and sharpening - whatever filtering algorithm is causing it. Looks similar to midtone detail in Resolve. Not that a GH5s would be even worse with it's over the top small radius unsharp masking and temporal noise reduction... At least on the Pocket 4K there are cDNG and proper colorspace conversions to ACES or iPP2 with gamut mapping and limiting which fix almost every issue. Only a good OLPF is missing atm.2 points

Thanks zero! I was pleasantly surprised by that lens and I still love my 5D3 but I must admit, it is tough sometimes... I am not that great of a colorist and sometimes I think a GH5 or X-T3 would be a lot easier to get that sharp, modern look. I’ve never measured it, but the 5D3 with ML Raw seems to have 11-12 stops which is usually more than enough for my needs. As you know, the biggest issue is chroma noise in the shadows but with a faster lens and one of those MX-9 Aputure lights, it’s not horrendous for a run and gun, handheld set up... and usually with a little crushing of the blacks, the chroma noise will disappear. But yes dynamic range is not why you would choose this camera. Btw I still watch your “Wolf...” ML Raw film on occasion... and it holds up beautifully. That location is a little beach on the Delaware Bay in southern New Jersey. It’s a tiny, old fishing village with tattered remains of piers and docks. People still live their but the commercial aspect of the village is just a ruins of memory. I posted a frame or two from this location before... The last one is obviously in the winter but you can see how desolate the location is from the opposite angle. To stay on topic, that last one was shot with an old Minolta MC 35mm 1.8. I bought it with the mount modified to EF but the focus ring is jammed at 3-4 feet so until I get it fixed, I can only shoot close ups with it... awesome lens though.2 points

Hello! I recently made a tutorial in covering how to make film halation and grain in Resolve! I used two methods. One using the GHAlex LUTs for the GH5 and another way using Color Space Transform. This is my first ever video tutorial so I apologize if it's a little boring and long. Tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20epDbE9Adc Here's some examples using this method - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luaGcO-nzd8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNQMeGqoM7o If you like this, feel free to download the Power Grades I've provided on my website and experiment with them. Killing people and wiping them out is hardly a new concept in society. Even Chimpanzees make humans looks tame. It is just now it can be done on a larger scale, and it is reported in 2.5 minutes all around the world. It is now the new normal. Living creatures are cruel as shit. Survival of the fittest and all that. Even plant life is protective and invasive as hell! It Ain't going away any time soon. You probably haven't seen or been involved in what I have seen or done in my lifetime to humanity. It is Fucking ugly, Really ugly trust me. And we do it in the name of God and Country, everyone's different God and Country on both sides, that is what is ironic as shit. Piss poor excuse sad to say. ?2 points -
My NX1 Transcoding Ends Today!
lucabutera reacted to Drew Veeneman for a topic
I'm not sure if it's because I've finally upgraded to the paid Studio version of Davinci Resolve, but my NX1 footage plays flawlessly... YES! No more transcoding to DNxHR and ProRes... hot damn. This frees up a LOT of Hard Drive space. I'm using Davinci Resolve Studio - Public Beta 2 I maybe late to the party here, but this is great. My hacked NX1 with NX-L speed booster still holds up great in 2019. The dynamic range is a little weak, however the detail retention is awesome.1 point -

I didn’t even realize how many jewels were in my backyard until I started searching for locations. Now I find an interesting place almost every time I go out to shoot. Thanks, nature helped me out here as this was nothing more than some saturation added. In the summer months, storms roll in and out of these small bayside communities and the cloud formations are amazing. One of my favorite aspects of ML Raw is how it renders skies. I sometimes wish for a little easier of a workflow but at the end of the day, I cannot deny the image benefits of 14 bit uncompressed Raw. Even 720p ML Raw has some special image qualities to it... 1080p is really more than enough for me... with Anamorphic, 2.5K is possible with the normal build and the experimental builds up to 3.5K looks pretty amazing. I think I’ll test it this summer.1 point

This is following on from something in the thread for the Pocket4K for anyone looking to pick up an original Pocket or Micro or, like myself, dusting off an old one that might not be aware of an issue with available SD cards. All of the SD cards that I put in it (and I tried a lot !) where coming up with No Card error and no amount of re-formatting internally or externally was resolving the issue and then I went and had a look at the official forum and saw this https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=83050&sid=2c193679bb69a8d8f2c48ac0b85ced38 Basically, Sandisk made a change and the original cameras (and the Video Assist as well I understand) can no longer read them. Sony made a firmware change to accommodate it for their cameras but BM haven't and likely won't. The upshot is that it is a nightmare trying to find recently produced SD cards that will work with them and users have been trying and returning all sorts of different ones trying to find a solution. After a lot of this effort, the card type that came up as being able to work is, ironically, a Sony one. It is the UZ designation at the end that is important as there are a few similar looking ones. This is the Amazon link to this exact one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00YOKOJOU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Mine arrived yesterday and I'm happy to confirm that it does indeed work perfectly well with my original Pocket camera so if you are looking at picking a camera up used or getting one out of the back of a drawer and don't have the original media for it then I'd recommend picking one of these up. Apologies for the cross post but the info would have got lost in the behemoth Pocket4K thread and at the time of my original post to @mercer in there about it I hadn't been able to confirm personally if this particular card worked. And now I can1 point

SD Cards For Original Pocket Cinema Camera
IronFilm reacted to Mattias Burling for a topic
It's all about the mage. I've shot side by sides all weekend long and the Micro consistently comes out on top. Both in raw and in Prores. A shame since using the BMPCC4K is an absolute breeze. Love the handling. The window mode and slowmotion is also sweet. (But I do really enjoy the SOOC image from the BMPCC4K when baking in the built-in LUT. But this camera is not meant for that type of shooting within my arsenal.)1 point -
A or B folks... like the Highlander... there can be only one. Failing to choose merely shows attempts to hide bias. If you don’t want to answer... DON’T. I’ll make one more rule for this survey... any answer that is not Singular and not as specified is an automatic “A”. This means answers such as “Both” or Neither are counted as “A”. If this is not your intention... vote “B”.1 point

Where Is The MFT Cinema Camera? (Or Fuji X)

My guess as to the "reason why" is Fujifilm is still trying to "get it right" with their mirrorless cameras' video performance (which they're now achieving) before launching into the cinema camera game? To make sure their first release is not a flop, but a success. Or at least that is my hope / theory.1 point -

That would be great. And some super HDR in Photo and Video wouldn't be too bad. There seem to be a lot of smartphone sized sensors in the pipeline 1/3" to 1/1.2"(?), by Sony and Samsung, though they won't be officially announced until some of then are slated for release in smartphones. Many of thede new sensors will have much better low light, dynamic range and high speed modes (apart from High Res mode). All of these could be of great use in action cams.1 point

Hang on, I thought it was his Grandfather that was doing the talking on here?? Seems on that DPR thread he's now saying its his Father.... There's not such a big difference between the 400Mbps GH5 codec and the P4k RAW - depends how much you want to bend it in post or how much you need to recover mistakes in capture. Yes the RAW is better in a lot of respects but the 400mbps is also very good1 point

Z-CAM quietly announce 8k and 6k FULL FRAME cameras - no joke!

Big things are happening! I just received my E2C which is the smaller budget version of the E2. It can shoot 4k at up to 30fps in ProRes and it costs only $800 (I got it for a little less due to early bird preorder)! I'll be doing some comparisons of it vs my bigger E2 tomorrow, hopefully. Also, for the full-size E2, Z Cam just released firmware 0.86 which, among many other nice improvements, adds 4kp160 (2.4:1 instead of 16:9). I hope to find something that is moving tomorrow to play with that as well.1 point -
I think that screen will be for settings like the GoPro one is. I could be wrong, but it's the wrong shape for a start. I completely agree. I'd happily sacrifice size (they could make it twice the size and I'd be fine with it) if it had a stabilised 1" sensor. But, it's not xmas apparently... IIRC, currently every option is missing at least two of those, some more, so if it was only missing one that would be a step forwards.1 point

whatever your hurdles are to overcome, it might be bad, heck it might be AWFUL (i kno), but it could still probably be worse why dont you be inspired by chuck close? chuck close is an american painter in his early career, he painted hyperrealistic portraits that looked like photos unfortunately, Although the paralysis restricted his ability to paint as meticulously as before, Close had discovered a new, and i think, better way to paint than before. his newer pieces are more interesting, and serve to cement his importance in art history so, the moral of this story is be glad you're not in a wheelchair1 point

That’s pretty much my assessment too. The FD is a better built lens with better color separation, naturally, but the Samyang seems sharper, naturally, with possibly an easier path for me to get a more neutral modern look. Another plus of the Samyang, which seems overlooked in lens tests, is that it has some focus leeway between 15-30 feet... making it much easier to track your subject. Also, for the price of the Canon, I can have the Samyang 50mm 1.4 and 24mm 1.4... that has to play into my decision a little. Or a lot. Btw, here’s another shot from the Samyang that was taken at the same time of day, with a more similar grade...1 point -
