I detect a lot of anti-Chinese bias! It's reasonable enough to raise the topic but save us the old "China makes junk" cliche, it's no longer as simple. China is a developing economy and all countries go through eras of churning out cheap products during this phase. Japan did it. Even the US did it to some degree, but in a very different technological era. Looking at the camera companies - Sigma did it - made very cheap lenses in huge quantities for a LONG time before they started to do the high-end quality stuff we all respect so highly. What is going on at the moment is Chinese home-grown technology is cost competitive and technologically becoming on an even par with western stuff, so that combination makes it a huge threat to US businesses like Intel and Qualcomm. There are political reasons for smearing Huawei. There is also a distinction between IP, design and assembly / manufacturing. Most of China's developing economy has been based on assembly and manufacturing but now they are becoming big on original designs and products, which is another threat to the US economy. Especially in chip design and telecoms. As for quality, perceptions and stereotypes always vary... You're entitled to your views. I find them outdated. RED cameras and iPhones are hardly poorly put together products - both made in China. Foxconn. No doubt if they had been made in an American factory by American hands you'd think they were better made, but that says more about prejudiced opinion than the actual facts or the skills level of the Chinese workforce. Across Asia there are a lot of people highly educated and dedicated to their work otherwise they wouldn't do the things they are doing. And Chinese space programme is another flagship advancement, whether we can agree on their politics or not, the writing is on the wall. The US is no longer top dog. "There will be nobody left in China to do business with. Very bad for China, very good for USA!" --- Of course when you have this twat starting trade wars, you're bound to get people whipped up into a sinophobic frenzy. Let's look at the facts. It's hard to imagine a President so out of touch with US businesses, who have benefited massively from cheap Chinese labour and manufacturing. There isn't a single major US technology or camera company around today that doesn't need Chinese manufacturing or parts supply. And yet Trump thinks attacking that is very good for the USA, because he has a simple world view - "we can make stuff here... it's easy... just build a factory"... For a start, if you look at the quantities of natural resources, rare metals and energy required to make mass produce fundamental parts for modern technological devices and appliances, the US doesn't have any of it easily to hand like China does and digging them up at the scale required would cause massive pollution right on your doorstep. Is that would you want? If smartphones were all made in the US they would cost 10x more at retail and wouldn't sell a single unit vs cost effective competitors. The technology doesn't even exist at the required scale in the US to build the stuff, like it does in China, Japan and South Korea. We're talking here about the machines that make machines. Vast majority of the equipment is Asian. We are talking vast scale of manufacturing, where a single factory is the size of a small city and employees over 1 million people. Add up the cost of those people with US wages vs doing the same thing in China and you start to realise what a fucking amateur Trump is when it comes to business and why he has made enormous losses and write-offs in every one of his business ventures.

I think it has the best image of all the mirrorless cameras I've ever seen, can't wait to see what full v-log brings. AF for video is its only real weakness but for me that's not a big deal - it is more important that it has great IBIS, handheld with my Canon fd lenses will be lovely

Braw is brilliant. But you can mangle it in post like any codec if you make bad decisions. It was obvious from the first time I tried it that the extended video LUT was useless with too much contrast and poor highlight handling. So I never used it. I graded a piece last week using nothing but primaries. Exposing well in Braw gives you amazing latitude and control in Resolve.

not using color management or ACES on project level anymore in Resolve. Since version 15.2.3 it is completely messed up (alpha especially). Switched to using CST or ACES transforms and recently to adjustment layers. Works quite well.

Just switched to ARRI colorspace. Having more luck with dark blues in comparison. And color separation between yellows and reds is better.

That's true. The X-T2 did well but not because of video and it seems to be common opinion that the X-H1 didn't perform well. But the X-T3 is on fire in the video space, so it may only be 6-months since they have had any real success in video. Though, I love the X-H1 for video and it's really held back by not having the X-T3 video specs. The Ursa Mini Pro G2 is very impressive, just not my style of camera. I love the EVA-1, just wish it were a bit smaller and didn't have the EF mount. Canon's Super35 (affordable) glass is pretty terrible and or huge. Using the EVA-1 for now, but would trade it in for a MFT-mount in a heartbeat. -- But still hoping for Fuji. We'll see!

It is not going to give you the same targeting capabilities of that array of 360 microphones but it is capable of some flexibility in the simulation of different polar patterns. I sometimes do the 'low budget' equivalent of that outdoors, by having the TM-2X mic on the camera and a Tascam DR-05 recorder alongside it (which has two omni-directional mic capsules to effectively record somewhat diffuse stereo). Then I mix and match between the two recordings at the editing stage. Also, if you want some behind-the-mic sound 'surround sound', remember that a simple 90 degree crossed-pair cardioid capsule mic arrangement (like a lot of stereo mics are, including the TM-2X) provides some of that as anti-phase signal (subtract the Left/Right channels to extract it in post).

I just tested on my monitor and couldn't get a signal. That's a real shame as I can see it being very useful in a number of situations. Maybe that's another thing they can fix in an update.

That's what I try to tell Blackmagic since their first camera. There's no logical reason not to put one (except for cutting costs). Some dslr don't have one because they have such a large amount of pixels it can mitigate any undesirable effects of not having one. I think I'm not the only one who would pay more to have one right off the bat. And you can always argue "why don't you just add one afterwards". I always do, but it can void the warranty, it is not designed by Blackmagic, it's not easily available, and so on... The battery life, the lack of OLPF and the red harsh clipping (I did a shoot in Prores, there was a red candle in a shot, ugly...) are the only three real weaknesses of the camera. Otherwise it is unbelievable, especially for the price !

I finally finished that roll of filament so Black is the new Electric Blue If you did want to go wireless with your project, Bluetooth might be a bit too short range. The easiest thing to do would be to use two Arduinos (one with the wiichuck and the other connected to the tripod head) and put one of these HC12 modules on each one. They are about £4 each and will let you have a wireless serial link between the controller and the head of in excess of 1km as opposed to probably 20-30m of bluetooth. They are really simple to implement in your code as the library lets you address them exactly as you would a serial port for debugging etc so you should be able to get it up and running in your current sketch really quickly by sending the values from the Arudino with the wiichuck that you would have sent to the controlling pins as data out to the HC12 serial port instead and have the Arduino with the head attached picking them up and actioning them. Mmmm.....I might even think about making that the 73rd project that I'm simultaneously working on as I've just thought of a way to send camera data to it as well to make a cheap high end PTZ camera.

Great advice. This is indeed something with do with live audiences. This is one way though. There are litteraly hundreds of different ways, depending the orchestra, the venue, the direction of the sound scape (as - what the director wants), the equipment and many more. Physics (acoustics) play a major role in whatever we do in sound as well. Practically, if you have a very wide stereo mic, like what all the cheap ones are and do, you are gathering mostly sound next to the mic. If you have one loud person there, your recording is wasted, all you will hear is the specific person. Maybe better is to have a small console next to the main-wide camera and do a little mixing in the fly. With a few 100$ microphones and a tiny console (all in all 500$ or so) you can achieve a greater sound scape than 1 1000$ microphone. Then you can have a classic short gun (Sanken CS-1M would be ideal) for the camera closest to the action and to the ring, and something different on the 3rd camera (what the 3rd camera does?), maybe a stereo there? Then do the mix in post. You will be amazed what production values will give you a simple setuo such this!

Lots of college degrees aren't worth much. Really just have to pick a lucrative field or be content barely getting by doing something you love or actually want to do. The whole college situation in the US(can't speak for the rest of the world) is a racket. I am not saying that degrees are worthless, but the system in place is terrible.

I have a Bescor Head too and I made a hack to control it with wii remote and arduino! I think it can also be controlled throw bluetooth in the same way (with some wireless controller in a electric blue 3d printed box...) They are slow even in its faster speed. So probably is better a gimbal (like ziyun crane 2) with tripod legs and wireles remote.

I think there are a couple of scenarios: 2 channels or more. If you're limited to 2 channels, you could do the Y-cable trick but have one directional and one omni to get the crowd. That would mean you can balance the action vs the crowd in post. If you're able to have more than that, perhaps between the two cameras, then one directional pointing at the stage, one under it, and a stereo pair for the audience might be a good setup. In case it's relevant, I've read a lot about how audio engineers record music, and an example is how to record an orchestra. They record using a directional stereo pair seated in the centre in the first few rows, or hung a bit above the orchestra looking slightly down. Then there's a second pair of mics that are omni-directional that are hung way up in the ceiling space of the venue, on the left and right sides of the hall, either about a third of the way back from the stage or even further back. The idea is that the stereo pair give the stereo imaging, and the omni mics give ambience and scale to the recording. They just pan them hard right and left and then adjust the two pairs to give a balance of directional and ambience.

Yeah, I mean, when you're shooting in gymnasiums like that, with awful lighting, you need all the help you can get and if upping the audio game helps I'm all for it. In a prefect world I'd have enough lights to light the ring myself, but I'm not experienced so much in lighting venues like that and I imagine it'd be pretty expensive! I did just build 4 sets of bank lights to try and see if it helps, in hopes of being about to kill some of the house lights.

In a prefect world I'd have the crowd, the ring and under the ring mic'd up, but that's just not feasible for a variety of reasons. I'm not looking for the best, given the circumstances and the budget, but hopefully something that gives fuller and richer sound than the camera mics. What I have now is the announcers going into a recorder and, sometimes, a Zoom H1 recorder I'll put under the ring to make the "bumps" sound more impressive. Ideally the stereo mics on the hard camera and my ringside camera would get better sound than I currently am getting. In terms of sound I'm already ahead of most of the people in my niche field, but I'd love to improve it more. I'm definitely not concerned with DR, especially in the venues we run!

Just seeing this now; my work happened to have both a 16gb SxS and an SD SxS adapter for use in the EX1. So a year back, I did test them out, and found it did not work. I had assumed my Sandisk Extremes would be better than the SxS, but the Arri is very picky; everything is very locked down. For example, I wanted to look into Arriraw and thought maybe a Shogun might do. But with the Classic, only the Odyssey 7Q with raw license would do (because of the proprietary T-Link standard)

+1 for DIRECTIONAL stereo. The problem is that with less directional stereo mics you end up recording the things that the camera can't see, which is strange when viewing the footage back because the image and sound are disconnected. Again, directional is what people want. Remember that you can always have a DIY solution with a Y-splitter cable and just have two directional mics that get recorded to left and right because of the Y-cable. The issue with that however is that you can't have dual-level recording so you have to really watch your levels because clipped is clipped.

Yeah, it is definitely relative but the weight without the added benefit of image stabilization makes it a little impractical for me. But as you suggested, it’s really 3 primes in one, so the convenience factor is a definite plus. Right now, I’m only looking for the Samyang 24mm 1.4 we’ve spoken about in the past while I sell off a bunch of unneeded glass. Then I’m going to reevaluate what I have left, and what I need based on upcoming projects, including the Samyang and see if there’s anything else I can get rid of... Then... I may look into replacing all of my 28mm lenses with the Nikkor 28mm 1.4. That has been a dream lens of mine but a little too pricey for my meager skills. But if it’s my only 28mm, it may be doable. My ultimate goal is to have a small EF set and then a few of my favorite primes of varying focal lengths with the ultimate goal of 10 lenses or less. I’d love it if I was the type of person that could get by with a Sigma zoom and a prime but I just don’t know how realistic that is.

It's all about the mage. I've shot side by sides all weekend long and the Micro consistently comes out on top. Both in raw and in Prores. A shame since using the BMPCC4K is an absolute breeze. Love the handling. The window mode and slowmotion is also sweet. (But I do really enjoy the SOOC image from the BMPCC4K when baking in the built-in LUT. But this camera is not meant for that type of shooting within my arsenal.)

Now add anamorphic glass... ...and you'll be able to reach this with hands for ; -)

Haha! So true! The first seasons were a great mix of medieval history with a spice of fantasy but then the thing went downhill very fast. What happened to the Snakes? They created a whole chapter that didn't exist in the books for no reason at all. That went nowhere like so many sub stories, and suddenly, the few that have left are going to the North, to various castles and we are never going to see them again, while some crazy fools go down to King's Landing that something random will happen. It seems to me that Benioff and CO, are just lucky to have the parents (his father is Stephen F£€$ing Friedman, for - his - God's shake! ) they have, and that gives them ultimate success, just because..when they had to do their part, failed miserably (also check Weiss's early tries, most of them were cancelled projects!). Benioff took one of the most established and influential storys of all time - the Iliad - and turned it into a mindless thing called Troy. How can you mess that? It is been studied and told for thousands of years! Welcome to Hollywood..

In other news, the bull riding footage I shot on the weekend from the city-slickers-visit-the-country-yee-ha trip is falling into place using the new Cut page in Resolve 16. A few problems: I got 'out of sync' where I either double-pressed the shutter or didn't press it, and ended up recording the bits in-between the action and not the action itself I blame the mic placement because I didn't have my eye pressed right up to the eyepiece, which means you can't see the edges of the frame and thus the blinking red record light. I also need to be more careful as I've done that before with other cameras without the same excuse. I got the really important shots, and I'm only making a highlights video for fun so I still have plenty of footage, so it's all good, just.... *facepalm* I was shooting straight-into a floodlight, so the vintage Minolta 135mm 2.8 flares like an absolute @#$!$#% so my contrast is all shot to hell, and because I was recording in 4k50 8-bit Cine-D I don't have the advantage of the 10-bit to save the day, plus the ISO was probably riding up a bit and it was only 150Mbps too, so the image leaves a little to be desired. I'll have to work out how heavily I push the image to try and recover a normal amount of contrast. The car was really full, so I only took one bag, and due to this restriction I only took two lenses - the 17.5mm f0.95 for people / low-light and the 135mm f2.8 for closeups. I almost took the Helios 58mm and I really wish I had because the 135mm was a bit too zoomed in to catch the rider and the bull in the same frame. I partially blame the camera insert I use as it doesn't have many pockets so I might need to look at a new insert or new bag. Here's a couple of frame grabs just for fun. The first is out of the flare range and has a bit of contrast added, but the second is unedited and shows the levels and the flare. The third is the 17.5mm. They are from my 720p proxy files so don't judge the image quality.

GH5 - Cine-D

It has already been provided in this thread, Fritz. Check out the DigirectTV video. I'm referring to that. Also, the Panasonic ambassador video of Griffith Hammond shows significant skew when panning. Hey E. I lived the video transition from tape then to digital tape and then to digital cards, so I became accustomed to having very little RS and jello effect in my work. And yes, this was back in the CCD era. In the last decade resolution has improved exponentially at the expense of RS and jello. Guess it's and either/or proposition. Unless I leave the camera static on a tripod, skew and jello affect every kind of shooting I do. It's not aesthetic and I detest it. But deep down I'm an optimist. I'll just have to wait a bit more until a camera maker solves that problem and gives us both a moderate price. Cheers from Latin America
