film grain
MurtlandPhoto and 6 others reacted to kye for a topic
Also, remember to adjust the amount of grain you're applying so that it looks good in your final delivery file. Compressing video really kills the grain, especially YouTube or other online streaming services. I'd suggest making a test project with a series of shots with increasing strengths of grain, output it, upload it, then look at it and dial it in from there.7 points -
CinemaDNG and 4K is closer to true 4K BRAW and 4K is about 10% less. Therefore, 1080p and CinemaDNG is a very good 1080p. So CinemaDNG with 1080p is about as good as BRAW with 4K scaled to 1080p (in terms of sharpness). This is our result. We compared both cameras (old and new Pocket).3 points

I predict that the 360 camera will eventually revolutionize the way how video is shot. It will replace all of these action and stabilized cameras. Picture an interview scene where you only need one camera that sits between the interviewer and subject. I think once they get good enough it’s going to be huge.2 points

Sony vs Canon vs Fujifilm
KnightsFan and one other reacted to andrew_dotdot for a topic
I use both ML on a 5D3 and a Fujifilm X-T3 at the moment. I haven't used Sony mirrorless. Here are some observations. As far as ML on the 5D3 is concerned, I capture 1920x1080 25fps 12-bit raw with lossless compression, which is 40Mb/s (more on this later*). This bit rate is significantly lower than the uncompressed formats, and in my experience this has significantly improved the reliability of the camera when writing to the CF cards. In a recent project I have captured 200GB of interview footage over a couple of days with zero errors. I rotate on four 64BG cards and one 128GB card, which me gives ample time to empty them as we go. And as earlier commented, "oh, that image." Never moiré or stair-stepping. Note: no continuous autofocus on the 5D3. I got the X-T3 to replace my Canon 70D, which has great auto-focus, but has a really pronounced moiré and stair stepping problem. I recorded 1280x720 raw with ML, and it was a bit of a problem child. Nothing like my experience the comparatively-reliable 5D3 on ML. Don't go for Canon mirrorless for these reasons, but do go for a used 5D3 if one presents itself! The X-T3 is my first mirrorless camera. I like it, but the continuous autofocus isn't as good as Canon's DPAF. At 4k and highest data rate, it's pushing 4:2:0 10-bit footage at 50Mb/s onto an SD card. It requires a good card, but not necessarily a UHS-2. A Sandisk Extreme UHS-1 card also works. I have one of each, both 128GB. *That 50Mb/s is a higher data rate than the 5D3 raw, but it's actually the 10-bit color, which is kind of the big deal for this camera. If you capture at 4k and downsize to HD (which is what I do) the potential advantage of capturing 4:2:2 externally is diminished. Some have written that if you downsample 10-bit 4k 4:2:0 footage into FHD, you wind up with 10-bit 4:2:2. I don't know if this is 100% true, but I can tell you that whereas grading 8-bit 4:2:0 is way harder than 8-bit 4:2:2 (like internal 8-bit 4:2:0 versus an external 4:2:2 recorder) Grading the X-T3's 10-bit 4:2:0 has been pretty rewarding, and the detail is good. It's a lot of data to work with. Note: 30-minute recording limit on the X-T3. The X-T3 is better as regards moiré and stair-stepping than the 70D, for example. It has better rolling shutter performance than the full-frame 5D3. OTOH, the 5D3's low-light performance is far superior to the X-T3. Also note that if you shoot in F-Log (I find it to be very good) you have a minimum ISO of 640, so be prepared with ND filters if you want to shoot wide open outdoors.2 points -
Budget Stereo Microphone Options?
newfoundmass and one other reacted to ac6000cw for a topic
Well, yes (with some more messing about with an attenuator cable), but you have to remember to turn it on and put it into record (or record pause) etc. - and the small handheld recorders I've used (not tried an H1 though) are generally bad for handling noise, so you also ideally need a shock mount for it. The beauty of plugin-powered mics like the TM-2X is that you just turn the camera on and it's working - perfect for 'run and gun' style use, and it's got a shock mount built-in. (P.S. I think the TM-2X sounds better in 'high sensitivity' mode - there is a low/high switch on it - so I use that mode and turn the recording level well down in the camera, but your mileage may vary, especially if you are in a very loud environment).2 points -

I'm currently trying to sell my Z6 for financial reasons. The 24-70 f4S sold in 2days, but the Z6 + FTZ is impossible to sell : large amount of bodies already on the used market, and for really low prices. I just checked and my unit is fortunately not concerns by the recall but, seriously, it will make the resell harder... D600-gate may still be in the memories ? My last time Nikon, really...2 points -
I've just received today the Redmi Note 7 coupled to Open Camera app delivers 4K + a sort of log or flat tool. I am simply impressed especially with such noiseless sensor performance, balanced resolution and DR for a $150 smartphone where a combo of hardware and software truly shines beyond my initial expectations. Great audio outcome and controls on NR and sharpness have made a very good surprise. Actually, the best current bang for the buck based on that 48MP Samsung sensor.2 points

So looking for some help getting my first lighting kit. It will mainly be for 2 point interview set-ups but it might be used for general fill or broll lighting. I was originally looking at the aputure tri8c but it's $670 CAD vs the h672w at $281 CAD. I was also looking at the ls 120d ii but it's $1k plus softbox and fresnel. I wanted to start out under $1k CAD and go from there. I should probably look at lights other than aputure but the amount of lights is overwhelming. I'm not very knowledgeable about lights so any recommendations are welcome.1 point

Lighting Recommendation?
KnightsFan reacted to tupp for a topic
Yes. Always use protective screens with open-faced tungsten fixtures, regardless of the level of the crew's experience. Most manufacturers will give you a protective screen for free if you don't have one. Well, you definitely do not want students (nor inexperienced crew) handling your cheap, delicate, re-branded LED fixtures -- they will break something on such fixtures at some point. In general, non-pros handling professional equipment should be very careful, and you have to clearly and emphatically warn such folks of any potential hazards or equipment vulnerability. I never had a problem with students ruining bulbs by touching them -- I simply don't let them install nor handle bulbs. Well, LEDs generally don't provide the punch nor control nor clean color that tungsten fixtures give -- so there is a trade-off. Also, LEDs generally have more weight-per-footcandle (especially if one is toting batteries) Furthermore, on cold sets or on locations with plenty of AC, any heat from the lights is often not a problem (sometimes it's a benefit). Oh. Well, you wrote, "totas," a plural tense indicating that someone inexperienced installed multiple bulbs. If several bulbs pop, it's probably because a clueless person used their bare hands to lamp the fixtures -- popping bulbs have nothing to do with the fixtures themselves. Really? 2-3? I have never had one Tota (nor any other tungsten fixture) "buzz," "spark" nor "short." I have experienced sockets go bad from someone who didn't fully seat the bulb. If there is contact arcing on a Tota double ended bulb, it is easy to see merely by removing the bulb. It looked like it had the output of a 300w tungsten bulb.1 point -
Lighting Recommendation?
tupp reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
...and if you are using equipment that students have touched, assume the worst and never use one without a protective screen. This is the main reasons I use LED lights: if you are working with inexperienced crew on a no budget set, LEDs won't burn anyone or explode. Or cook the room. To be fair, though, I only ever had one tota bulb explode on me. I used 2-3 different totas with electrical problems, shorting, buzzing loudly, or sparking. I never had any issues with other Lowel lights, just the totas. Like, half as bright, or like 500w equivalent? If you got any sense from what you've seen so far.1 point -
Are you shooting your interviews in outhouses? With tungsten, you also get a smoother color spectrum, greater beam control and a higher power density. I saw it at NAB. I doesn't look as bright as Tota with a 750w bulb. Here's a tip: never touch the glass part of a quartz bulb, because the oils from your skin will cause it to eventually pop (explode). Always use a clean paper towel to hold the bulb when lamping a fixture. Don't use a facial tissue -- it can be impregnated with moisturizing oils. If you accidentally touch the glass part of a quartz bulb, do not turn it on until you have first cleaned it with a new paper towel and isopropyl alcohol.1 point

He may or may not, that's not even inportant. I shouldn't put it there because it doesn't really matter. But he was right, nevertheless. Certainly, he died 14 days after. It is posted already and it is very real. https://www.change.org/p/hbo-remake-game-of-thrones-season-8-with-competent-writers Who are the "mainstream media"? What is their purpose? Do you believe there is a conspiracy going on to push HBO to re-make the 8th season (and the 7th, probably..)? By whom, and why? What are the deeper forces hiding behind it? Are they fighting Goldmam Sachs - which Benioff's father is a shareholder and ex-president? Are the easterners fighting western values through Westeros? I admit I never heard of this brand before, at least here in France no renting company has them. I have to admit when I first saw the pictures I was a little worried by the build quality, but I know I may be asking too much Anyway a big thanks to you all for this suggestion !1 point -

What are you? Cine-Trump?! They guy was put on an asylum because he was right, and saved lives. "Semmelweis was outraged by the indifference of the medical profession and began writing open and increasingly angry letters to prominent European obstetricians, at times denouncing them as irresponsible murderers. His contemporaries, including his wife, believed he was losing his mind and he was in 1865 committed to an asylum (mental institution). Semmelweis died there only 14 days later, possibly after being severely beaten by guards. Semmelweis’ practice only earned widespread acceptance years after his death, when Louis Pasteur developed the germ theory of disease which offered a theoretical explanation for Semmelweis’ findings. Semmelweis is considered a pioneer of antiseptic procedures. THE SEMMELWEIS REFLEX The Semmelweis reflex or “Semmelweis effect” is a metaphor for the reflex-like tendency to reject new evidence or new knowledge because it contradicts established norms, beliefs or paradigms."1 point

Man, this is why 8K is appealing to me but I don’t want to think what I need to edit 8K footage. CFast and express cards better drop in price a lot in the next 4 years. Even H265 10bit 8K is pretty hefty and most people will want to shoot in ProRes RAW. Honestly—the way we consume media—mostly YouTube or Vimeo with highly compressed h264 or h265 streams on mobile devices, 4K with a 1080p deliverable is still plenty good.1 point -
Blind skin tone comparison
webrunner5 reacted to kye for a topic
I agree with @fuzzynormal in that while there are differences, they aren't huge, and if you really were shooting with the 'worst' of this bunch, the files would be good enough to push and pull around in post. The email thread on CML was titled "Budget camera skin tone shootout" because at the level that those guys are operating, these are all budget cameras(!). In that sense, the fact that none of them are really that bad speaks more to their ability to select good quality cameras rather than anything about the camera market, although the idea that there are no more bad cameras is certainly pretty solid. I've played around with skin tones enough to know that with a couple of very simple adjustments you can balance them across pink/yellow, and with a single Hue vs Hue curve you can even compress the Hue variation to push pinks towards yellow and yellows towards pinks to get more consistency and things in the sweet spot, so even if you're looking at a very saturated and contrasty rec709 output from a cheap and excitable DSLR there are simple solutions to make a serious improvement to the skin tones. On a personal note I find tests such as this quite reassuring, because I picked G as the best, with the other ones I liked also rating highly in the poll. In a sense it confirms that my perception is pretty good, considering I agree with a bunch of professional cinematographers I may not be great at colour grading but at least I know that I like what others like and if I keep practicing then I'll get better because if I do something right then I'll know it when I see it.1 point -
Here's a used tungsten kit with a decent sized Rifa and a small Pro light for US$425. It also comes with a 40-degree egg crate for the Rifa. This kit is a good deal and that Rifa with the egg crate is great for interviews. It would would probably be a good idea to add a "medium-sized" focus-able light, such as an Omni (here's a beat-up one for US$32). An extra stand for this light will probably run US$30-US$100.1 point

IronFilm reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
Have you looked into the Z Cam E2? It has a multi-aspect M43 sensor like the GH5s, and it has a S16 crop mode. With a speed booster, you can get full frame or S35, or you can use the crop mode for S16. And it shoots 10 bit 4:2:2 internally. It's $2k for the body, so more budget friendly than an FS7 or URSA. The downside is that it requires an external monitor, though you can use a smartphone for wireless monitoring and control via wifi. I do not have first hand experience with one yet, unfortunately. I can't think of anything else in the price range that can go up to 35mm with a speed booster, and has a dedicated 16mm crop mode, and 4:2:2 10 bit internally. I would stay away from ML for pro work. It was too finicky when I used it extensively on the 5D3. It was a phenomenal image, but I wouldn't be confident in it working 100% of the time (even due to user error, cards filling up too quickly, etc).1 point -

i know. But what technology does DJI bring into this relationship? They don't have IBIS, no experience with phase detection. They may contribute to save a few bucks with their processors or a few parts. But all in all I think Hasselblads main interest was to get a name they can print onto their drones and sell at a premium. I don't see much, they can add to the way Hasselblad work at the moment. I may be wrong and we see a X1D II made in China soon?1 point -

But she has done that in the past without burning entire cities and killing thousands of innocents in what was essential demolition porn with the C4 explosive buff Drogon suddenly received. My biggest gripe is how lazy and sloppy they have been with basic continuity, basic character arcs, and history EVEN INSIDE THEIR OWN SHOW. It’s almost like they forgot what they even wrote in Seasons 1-7. I have no problem with Dany slipping into madness and killing everyone. I do have problem with the utter lazy, sloppy, convenient writing they did to just get it done. This season was so in effective in getting me to actually care what happens to the characters (something they did so well in past seasons) that it just comes off as almost malicious ineptitude. Especially around the Night King, Jamie, Jon, Dany, the power of the Dragons, and Euron. Oh, Euron! Euron is perhaps the most weakly, misrepresented character to ever be created. He exists solely to save D&Ds lacks of skill in wiring something compelling, makes sense, and has emotional impact. ”Man, how do we write this to make sense and resonate with the audience.” ”I don’t know man” ”Lets just have Euron teleport in, go all OP, and then peace out cause it’s to hard for us to write something compelling”. ”Awesome Idea!” Hopefully their work becomes a lesson on NOT what to do in writing stories.1 point -
Thanks zero! I was pleasantly surprised by that lens and I still love my 5D3 but I must admit, it is tough sometimes... I am not that great of a colorist and sometimes I think a GH5 or X-T3 would be a lot easier to get that sharp, modern look. I’ve never measured it, but the 5D3 with ML Raw seems to have 11-12 stops which is usually more than enough for my needs. As you know, the biggest issue is chroma noise in the shadows but with a faster lens and one of those MX-9 Aputure lights, it’s not horrendous for a run and gun, handheld set up... and usually with a little crushing of the blacks, the chroma noise will disappear. But yes dynamic range is not why you would choose this camera. Btw I still watch your “Wolf...” ML Raw film on occasion... and it holds up beautifully. That location is a little beach on the Delaware Bay in southern New Jersey. It’s a tiny, old fishing village with tattered remains of piers and docks. People still live their but the commercial aspect of the village is just a ruins of memory. I posted a frame or two from this location before... The last one is obviously in the winter but you can see how desolate the location is from the opposite angle. To stay on topic, that last one was shot with an old Minolta MC 35mm 1.8. I bought it with the mount modified to EF but the focus ring is jammed at 3-4 feet so until I get it fixed, I can only shoot close ups with it... awesome lens though.1 point
