  1. This camera does exist and is already in the hands of some reputable camera stores in LA. I talked with one owner and they didn't reveal much except that it was a game changer and one of the best cameras that they had ever seen. I asked them "game changer? They said "yeah". They have it in their shop and are playing with it. Not to something to be taken lightly, especially with using the word game changer... Coming from Panny!!

  2. I don't think Dan gets it. Dan's current thoughts are incoherent. You need to make sense, create a plan, find your topic, and attack it. If you're gonna be so generic about your topic, no one cares. Why should anyone care about your generic ideas? The topic of activism is too general and no one needs to watch that. If you do your research and find something interesting, then you might have a shot. Find something that is occurring in your area. Are there a particular group or individuals in your community that are activists? Are there homeless veterans on the street who aren't getting enough services from the VA in your neighborhood? Is there a group of local veterans who are trying to help them out by feeding them or shelter them. Now you have a topic and a particular group to interview for a specific reason. You're shining a light into a problem that remains in the dark. You will need a thick skin because docs or journalism is a tough job. You're dealing with real folks (we're being really nice to you in comparison)

  4. Hello! I've been looking to replace my 20$ Zomei variable ND filter for some time. It isn't unusable, but has its own quirks, which I was quite fed up with. I decided that I don't want to spend more than 40$ for a new one ( high-rolling, ain't I? ). So, after doing a little research I put my money on a K&F ND2-32. In the meantime, while I was waiting to get it from China, I also managed to find a bargain on eBay: an used Genustech ND filter (not the Eclipse version, unfortunately). Each of these filters cost me ~40$ Here is how they compare. I used Panasonic G85 and Minolta 58/1.4 (set to f/2) on a dumb adapter, which roughly translates to 116 mm eqv. Color cast: White balance was set manually, each time I put on a new filter. To do it, I simply held a white card in front of my camera and let it save the results as a custom WB setting. So, without any filter I got 5650K and +10 tint. With K&F: 5250K, +21 With Genustech: 5100K, +25 (though it still looks yellowish to my eyes) With Zomei: 5250K, +22 2. Sharpness and contrast This was a bit tricky to evaluate, since Genustech acted as a some kind of a diopter. When I put it on, my focus point shifted just a little and I had to refocus the shot. These are 100% crops from image above. No filter (SS: 1/250 s): K&F at ND2 (1/100 s): K&F at its maximum (which, truth be told, is closer to ND16 than ND32) [1/13 s]: Genustech at ND2 (1/100 s): Genustech matching K&F max (1/13 s): Genustech at its maximum (around ND 200 [7.5 stops]) [0.8 s]: Zomei at ND2 (1/100 s): Zomei matching K&F max (1/13 s): Zomei at its maximum (also around ND200) [0.8 s) : 3. Bokeh Both small and big 'balls'. Once again, 100% crops. No filter: K&F: Genustech: Zomei: 4. Other thoughts What I really like about the K&F filter is the fact that it has hard stops at minimum and maximum. It's a shame it goes only up to ND 16. Genustech doesn't really work as a polarizer. If you rotate it, it won't block reflections (both K&F and Zomei will). Instead, it changes reflections' color (from brownish to blueish). I'm not sharing my conclusions since I don't want to influence yours. Which filter would you keep with you, taking everything into account? Regards.

  5. If it reaches £5k used, I will be on a plane faster than Donald Trump going to a rally on Airforce One But before I book the plane ticket, better be mindful of the dead mount of Fuji, Leica and Panasonic, those really dead and unsuccessful camera companies!

Definitely. I just tried putting a tracking marker on my arm and removing it. It utterly failed to replace the tracking marker with skin--and instead replaced that patch of my skin with the wall behind me! Like I said, not great results, but it's pretty fun to play with.

  9. For me Canon lenses AF on Fuji for stills stretches from mediocre to usable. Compared to as advertised on a Canon body (both mirror and DPAF). For video on a Fuji the Canon lenses AF stretches from bad to absolutely unusable. Compared to really really good on a Canon body with DPAF. I've tried 28/1.8, 50/1.8 STM, 85mm f1.8, 200/2.8L and a bunch of zooms.

  11. If you convert your clips anyway, why don't you convert the matrix? It's a bulletproof solution to this issue which I described in my video I recommended you to watch. Or if you prefer a written version, here it is at the bottom of the page: http://colorizer.net/index.php?op=technical It uses FFMPEG.

  13. Isn't this going to be the camera Panasonic said in October they were going to start producing? "The Japanese electronics company revealed the organic sensor to the world in February this year, but has now announced that it will begin production on a camera system capable of shooting 8K video. Currently called the AK-SHB 810, it will be the world’s first camera to incorporate an organic sensor and, according to Panasonic, will be a compact, box-type, multipurpose camera" here Techradar.

  14. Well at least the firmware update will fix the audio codec. You're never going to get the best audio quality through internal pre-amps anyway, always better to use an external device. The audio circuit inside a camera has a lot of other noise from electronics and heat to deal with. I think Panasonic are holding a few things back from the $2k S1, for obvious Cinema Lumix related reasons! That camera might be $4k or even $6k though, so at least you are saving some money by going with the S1 and it's minimally crippled video feature set. It's far from an EOS R. No crop, anamorphic aspect ratios, great codec, internal 10bit, soon to be 4:2:2, high bitrates, 4K/60p Super 35, hardly lacking for a stills camera is it?

  18. Well a person could just pick and choose all feel good stories and that is OK. Nothing wrong with that. But that doesn't reflect real life, at least not as a TV stations looks at it. I guess you could just follow what you are into to and be happy. Might not kick your dog or beat your wife, or the opposite when you get home lol.

  21. I can't tell you how many times I felt in danger. These people take what they believe in a Really serious way. As you say most of it is good news stories helping society in a good way, but Oh Boy the ones that aren't, Jesus grab your ass. You have to get tough at times. That is why 60 Minutes has been around for hell, forever. They ask the tough questions and go about it like a Pit Bull. I don't think I could do that all the time. Scary stuff. If you can't get in an argument with your nose 4 inches from the next person, standing toe to toe, pointing your finger at them, Like I said, find another career. And I was Just the cameraman! My reporters, women included, were tough as nails. There is a reason they make top end Microphones built like a tank. Have one of those shoved up your nose lol.

  22. I agree - you're absolutely on the money from a journalistic perspective. This approach ranges anywhere from hard-hitting journalism (where you ask tough questions in an attempt to go beyond the PR messaging and pre-prepared sound bytes and expose something new) through to 'covert' tactics like Who Is America (where you pretend to be aligned with the views of the person you are interviewing in order to get them to open up about views they would not normally reveal to a broader audience). Other approaches could be PR videos where you aren't interested in exposing any new information, but simply showcasing the interviewees rhetoric or rationale or world-view. Depending on your personal beliefs this could either be viewed as "making sense" or "propaganda" Another approach could be to move beyond PR and go for education. For example, there is global agreement from people that know what they're talking about that we're in a climate crisis and yet the debate still rages on, which means that the gap isn't knowledge, it's education. These videos might be a balance of rationale / world-view and polite skepticism designed to inform viewers about the topic and respectfully convince them of a particular perspective. I think understanding the position you want to take as a film-maker around these topics is a great place to start, because it radically changes the style of interaction you want to have with the people you are interviewing.

  24. Because if you are good, you ask tough questions, not just go there to kiss their ass. Remember it is an "interview", not a love fest. And it gets ugly at times, not always but.. If you don't ask questions why even do it. That means you are agreeing hook, line, and sinker with them as they say. Waste of your time and the viewers time. We are talking activists, not your mother. And if this is out on the street there is a group across the street that wants to kick your ass and theirs. Been there as they say. You Have to be Ballsy as hell to do this stuff. This is not for the meek. Why do you think I am such a horses ass lol. I am, "one of us is going to die, and it ain't me" types ?. They trained me well.

  26. Most of the engineers I'm speaking of are ones who passed the PE, not some liberal arts major with a job title. The job market is saturated with engineers coming out of college, but the trades are in high demand with few applicants(mainly due to the death of votech during high school). With that said, I know a few engineers who broke 6 figure, but I know just as many heavy equipment techs and crane riggers that broke 6 figure. And most of the sparkies are making around 80k.

They just want their iPhones and Nike shoes... who cares how many suffer to produce them? Who could care less if they are all dying from pollution?... so long as it's over there... and not here. Regardless of how you feel about Trump... he's right! It doesn't matter how he arrived at the conclusion... He's just plain right. And those of you that would argue otherwise are unknowingly Pro-No Human Rights and Pro-Inequity. Some things matter more than gadgets.

  31. “The US has transitioned very successfully to a services based economy. I don't understand why so many Americans want the polluting labour intensive factories back and to plunder the land for massive amounts of raw material. That's why you have China, they are willing to do all of this and pollute their environment, so you don't have to, and so your kids can go to a nice school, get a good education and have a nice job that doesn't depend on manual labour.” The desire for cheap gear does not justify moving laborious polluting industries. The American government and industry need to take responsibility and develop procedures and methods to mitigate and manage harmful side effects to manufacturing. The fact that the polluting has been moved offshore thousands of miles away does not mean it does not effect you. The pollutants find there way here much like the cheap gear did. I have been to Guangzhou, I have seen the polluted air, it’s a sad realization when you see millions of young people being sacrificed in order to generate revenue for the country. Pollution doesn’t just go off into space it follows trade winds and ocean currents eventually normalizes in the atmosphere and ecosystem. Not only does China steal IP, force technology transfer and not open their market they damage your air and ocean all while making money off of you. No one holds them accountable because the people who should be doing that are busy making money from it and the everyday consumer is happy with their latest cheap gadget. Donald trump is a silly incompetent individual and is probably doing this out of a temper tantrum but it is the right thing to do. Everything has a cost and sooner or later people realize it. Millions of people rush to shop at Walmart and target then they wonder where their jobs went.

  32. True. I love MFT and if they had a EVA-1 style video camera, I probably would be using MFT fully, especially once the 10-25mm f1.7 lands. But, without really knowing what's ahead for MFT and Panasonic, hard to justify buying what will probably be a $2k+ lens.

  33. I think a lot of people is over worry about the collapse of Huawei and put all the damn on Trump. As someone already mentioned, the sanction shouldn’t be only Trump’s own will but a consensus of the parliament and other countries in the alliance. We can punish a theft by legal system but that’s the only way to suppress a misbehaved company diplomatically. When prosecuting Huawei is being seen as no difference from killing innovation, we all seem leaving the hazard of nation and personal security behind just because of its tempting technology and affordable price. “Free” is expensive, not to mention that you may have to pay real money and your privacy to exchange for the sweetie technology. I am not going to dig too much deeper on this issue but would like to share some figure that the fall of Huawei and Chinese gadget may not as tragic as you thought. Do you still think China has the lowest labor wage on earth? It used to be but it’s not anymore. In 2012, an iPhone assembly line worker got paid for about US$362 per month. In 2018, the wage just goes up to US$579, 60% increment after 6 years. It is reasonable because the labors deserve a better paid for economic growth. However, the fact is the the wage of a Vietnamese factory labor is between US$150-250, which already lower than the level of China in 2012. Indeed, Samsung has already made their smartphone in Vietnam since 2014 and several photo equipment manufacturers such as Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax or Tamron are making their cameras or lenses in Philippine, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. China is not the only or the most attractive place any more. Panasonic even moved back several assembly line to Japan because the entire cost in China is not lower than in Japan due to the tax policy and exchange rate. Another concern of chips manufacturing in China is also not a too big deal in the high end area. China has Fab plants making chips but most of them are two generations behind the updated process. If my information is correct, the most advanced process in China should be 14nm so far which is not in pace with the conventional 12nm, 10nm or 7nm process. Thanks to the enforced IP exchange policy in Mainland China, all manufacturers are just too aware of the aggressiveness and patient-theft record of this non-trustable country. That’s why they always keep the best on their own hand and build the Fab plants in US, Japan, Taiwan, Korea or Israel instead of in China. The convention technology in China is just able to produce medium or entry level products. So iPhone won’t be affected to much because they never rely on the Fab plant in China. But the manufacturing of circuit board might be affected in certain level, of course. After all, DJI may be the only brand I feel empathy because it has good track record and well behaved in the industry. I hope it can be excluded finally and prove itself clean. Otherwise, Trump should teach GoPro to fly for filling in the gap.

  34. How many Chinese companies are forced to find a 50% local partner to share their technology with? Zero. What's it look like when a US or European company wants to operate a business in China. Are Facebook, Google, freely available in China? In contrast are there restrictions on Chines companies like TikTok, WeChat, etc across the world? It's amazing to me how China wields just one of their tools, censorship (which on it's own you should be objecting too!), as an economic tool to keep businesses out and you all don't have a problem with it. And by the way it's not Facebook or Google's fault that Europe doesn't have good equivalents. How hard is it to start a social network? The US and Europe mostly have free markets (and please don't think European markets are entirely free). China has a state run policy designed to put foreign companies at a disadvantage. Huawei didn't have to set up a 50% joint venture with an American or European company, Huawai benefits from import rules that can result in paying less customs duties than a US company within the United States. China is fighting tooth and nails not to be reclassified as anything other than a developing country. It's laughable. It amazes me how excited European consumers are to buy Huawei phones considering the long term cost to their own jobs and well being. At this point even Samsung has my sympathy because they are fighting against Chinese companies that can absorb years of losses and profits due to government funds and loans. It is not a level playing field, China is making sure of it, so Trump may have faulty logic but he's drawing the right conclusion. Europe needs to invest massively in R&D and new ways of manufacturing or the continent is in trouble. Just look at recent Der Spiegel issue (for those of you in Germany) as an example of where entire German industries are facing issues both self-made and foreign made because they had to transfer decades worth of know-how to their Chinese joint-venture companies. I have no beef with the Chinese nor China's government which has lift up the country economically but I do have a major problem with pretending that Huawei (of all companies! I encourage you to read up more about how that company is run and by whom) is worthy of a second of our sympathy.

  37. I think the whole world needs to wake up and understand depending pretty much on China to make their stuff is a huge mistake. I am not talking as a personal insult to China. I respect what they have done. But the whole damn world is putting their eggs in one basket here. Nations are loosing their national identity, people out of work. This is leading to a F ing total disaster. You can't have one country making everything and the rest just going belly up, and not abide by the rules. That is the trouble with this crap. Trump is just a small ass piece of all of this. Britain is just about to be a nobody country soon. Other European countries are nearly in a worse shape. This is all some serious shit. South America is going to shit also. It Ain't going to get better keeping it the way it is. This has no good end without some big ass change. A hell of a lot of countries are to blame for letting this crap happen.

  40. Panasonic has definitely been known to make bold moves compared to Canon, so maybe they will really go for it, so to speak. I think the L-Mount needs a GREAT camera, a game-changing camera, to really push it forward. The E-Mount was very slow to take off as well with the VG900, original A7 line, and FS100/700 - some adopters but not a ton... but the A7s' low light abilities really made people take notice. And then the second generation cameras improved dramatically. The FS7 launch was also HUGE for Sony (4 years into the E-Mount's life). Consider, in 2014 (5 YEARS AGO), the FS7 had 4K 10-bit 422, 60fps in 4K, 180fps in HD, and external raw. Canon still doesn't have much of that unless you're shooting raw on the C200 and Panasonic matched it with the EVA-1 just 2 years ago. The FS7 + A7s combo really pushed the E-Mount forward. We have been recycling the specs of the FS7 for 5-years in the under $10k field. So Panasonic does need that game-changing, 2019 L-Mount camera to push their new mount and direction forward. The S1 is amazing and will get even better with the coming firmware. But this cinema camera needs to be packed full at a price that is attainable (like the FS7 was). -- Then, Sigma needs to deliver a collection of f2 primes that aren't HUMONGOUS and expensive, like every L-Mount lens right now. -- EDIT: Woah! So I guess it is an official LUMIX event: https://www.eoshd.com/2019/05/cine-gear-expo-reveals-new-cinema-lumix-camera-announcement-on-may-31/ So maybe we are looking at something more affordable and not from the high-end Panasonic cinema team (unless they are going to start branding everything LUMIX).

  41. Honestly for me, it wasn't even something that I was considering buying (unless it was a must get!) as much as wanting to see a sign that Panasonic is still invested and committed to M43. The LS300 still serves me well. And a GH6 has more appeal to me anyway. I just want re-assurance that they're committed to M43 because the G95 didn't set my world on fire and aside from the new lense its been pretty mum.
    1 point
  42. Me as well. Though, I do think that if you can put internal NDs into a GH6 and add in 4K 120fps and the low light capabilities of the GH5s, that would satisfy my MFT video needs - which I would use mainly for traveling jobs and times when I need to go super lightweight. Full V-Log and internal/external raw would be nice as well.
