  1. What I don’t understand is why the major manufacturers are allowing BlackMagic to be the only kid in town to offer internal ProRes/Raw in a DSLR/M form factor and why 4K 60p in 10 bit is considered a dream camera when it can be had for $1300?.

Yeah it cost almost nothing on the used market. Im getting the One Little Remote V4. I already have a breakout box and the URSA mini handle with start/stop, auto iris and AF through LANC. With the V4 I will be able to use both. Looks very nice.

  3. What part of $2500 for a full frame 10bit V-LOG shooting camera isn't a bargain? The $2000 or the $500? Oh and it is also a kick ass stills camera with best EVF on the market and Super 35mm 4K 60p like an X-T3, but still isn't a bargain? An Alexa or RED doesn't have PDAF either! Manual focus for cinema is fine by me... My best lenses are MF. And when you need video AF, keep a cheap second body like an A6400 handy. It is only the first year. Will get better in terms of native lenses. Until then, you can adapt only... everything. Well, you will have to criticise everyone in that case because nobody is doing a $2500 full frame camera with global shutter, 4K 120p raw and built in ND... And if they did, it would be by RED and cost $50,000. WTF? Cinema people shoot selfies now?

  4. Was there any mention of IBIS in the S1H? Also my opinion... it seems like the ultimate hybrid filmmaking camera. But considering the S1 is pretty close in features, it’s hard to say whether it’s worth the extra.

  5. Looks like it does actually have that flippy screen so many were interested in though, so that's good: I did read somewhere, newsshooter maybe? That it does indeed have the same IBIS as its sister S cameras, I'll try to find a reliable link.

Bought the old 17mm f1.8 again. Must have had it five times already. Got for a stills camera but it will definitely come in handy on the Micro as well.

  7. Alexa and RED are made for professional productions with "real budgets" and "real crews". So needless to say a dedicated focus puller is generally part of the production's expense. But if you want to see some piss poor RED footage just do a search for "RED Raven footage". A lot of aspiring filmmaker bought that camera thinking they could do it alone... what a cluster Fuk of out of focus mess. It's not for selfies... it's so a solo operator can frame their shots etc... without needing the talent in the scene. This of course is yet another issue a major production does not have to worry about.

  8. I actually have very similar feelings to yours. IMO their mistakes are: - pricing - religious denial of PDAF - lenses size, pricing and general closness of L-mount standart (why the hack didn't they open it like MFT?) - no real breakthrough tech - built-ND, global shutter, 4k 120p, raw, etc - no flip out screen on specific cine model??
    2 points
  9. I can't help but feeling slighty disappointed. I really want to like their l-mount line but man it's difficult ? It looks all right but that's about it. Feels like panasonic is doing everything wrong with the l-mount, I mean they have the right ideas but seems like they fail to execute in the correct way. It's weird because with the GH line they have been doing everything right. But it might just be me being negative, looking forward to read those that feeling positive about it!

  10. So.. the rumors were correct - no NDs, no PDAF (dont even bother), no flip-screen.. nothing really important.. just 6k 24p and 4k60p.. at 4 GRAND$$$ Thanks, I will pass. Waiting for A7S3 and GH6 now.

They do exist but not at the sort of price or with the sort of footprint you're after This "even sillier lens to put on an MFT camera than the B4" from my previous post is actually a 200-400mm f4 zoom. Back in the real world, Sigma actually do a lens that is quite close to your hypothetical 100-400 f4.5-f5.6 which is their 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO OS which used is usually around £300-350. Its a decent performer, has OS and with a smart adapter you'd have some AF.

Yeah, the low light from the P4K would be lovely on the GH5 Completely agree that it's about tradeoffs in getting the shot. I'm up for the comparison, but grading it is much easier than shooting it (and I don't own the cameras, so...), which is where it's currently at. In good time Indeed it does! It's good to see people sensibly trading things off against each other instead of just going for the latest thing. And speaking more generally about older tech still being good, tradeoffs in size, accessibility, and usability, I thought I'd re-share this 720p video.. ???

Looks like its the rise of the Micro Im super happy with mine. Have settled in on the Tamron 17-50/2.8 VC as my standard lens (on the speed booster). I stuck on a $10 Fotga variable ND because I couldn't find a step ring for my normal ND. I know from an A/B I made that it is a quite soft filter. But all it seem to do on the Micro is remove moire and make skin look more flattering. So its still on and Ive stopped looking for the step ring My Panasonic 12-35 is going on sale today. Don't see myself using it. Got it as a small option but in reality it isn't all that small. Instead my old kit zoom from the GM1 will act as my small zoom. A bonus with the 17-50 is that it works perfectly on my EOS-R if I ever need too shoot 4K or for some other reason want to shoot video with a zoom in s35 mode. I had it with me on a 5 hour run-n-gun but ended up using my old trust worthy 28mm f1.8. Which of course also is quite nice on the Micro. Looking forward to see you guys build your rigs. Mine is pretty much complete accept a controller thats been stuck in customs for over a week... pissed is an understatement..

Thanks. No IR cut filter, unless there was one built in to the cheapo vari ND that I had on there ! I'm actually actively keeping an eye out for a cheap Micro now. The Pocket needs an EVF/Loupe anyway so I don't see the Micro needing one as an issue and the extra things it offers over the Pocket are worth it. The expansion port for external switch control is appealing in terms of building a custom handle. I've already made some development steps in preparation for that so it might be something that might be of interest to you when I find a camera. The expansion port also has a composite video output which gives some possibilities for cheap wired and wireless monitoring. With regard to the Pocket4K comparison, the OG has less of everything and obviously isn't going to win a game of Top Trumps against it. But...well we know thats not the whole story. In some respects, I don't actually care how it stacks up as long as it is good enough for the situation I need it for. On this trip, I had the OG Pocket in a small side panel of my bag with a couple of spare batteries and the 12-60mm lens. The whole thing weighed hardly anything, wasn't bulky and was discreet enough to take shots without alarming anyone. That just wouldn't have been the same at all with the Pocket 4K so in that situation for me it won hands down because it produced a standard and style of output that was acceptable in a more practical package. I would undoubtedly have been able to potentially do more with the Pocket 4K and done it in lower light but that potential is worthless if it not practical to actually shoot with it. If I only had one or other of them then I wouldn't be crying into my beer about what comes out of them even if one of them is "only" 1080p. I think someone on here was supposed to be doing an A/B comparison ?

  16. Hey all! I’ve been doing some soul searching lately... they say the camera lens is the window to the soul, right? Anyway, seeing as my current cameras both have multi-aspect micro four thirds sensors (GH5S and Pocket 4K), I’ve been planning to update my taking lenses for anamorphic. I use a Kowa 16-H which is fantastic, and the SLR Magic Rangefinder, which works well in most cases. I messed around some with old primes that I have kicking about, and determined that the right 28mm lens just MIGHT squeak by in anamorphic mode on the GH5S, and would probably work perfect on the Pocket. I was also after a native mount pancake, because let’s be honest. On gimbals, the typically long and front-heavy anamorphic setups just don’t work well. I have a Ronin M (not a small gimbal by 2019 standards), and I have to add a lot of ballast to BARELY make the Kowa work. The gimbal strains hard and can’t tilt to vertical. Well, a short google later, and I ordered a Meke 28mm pancake on Amazon. What the heck, it’s really cheap, doesn’t hurt to try it right? Well, it just showed up, and it works PERFECT. If you have a Kowa 16-H/8Z, I highly recommend snagging one of these. As with anything on the wide end, it vignettes pretty hard with the Rangefinder mounted, but with just the Kowa, it’s clean as a whistle (cropped to 2.39 of course.) This will be my new go-to for gimbal work and for wide establishing shots. I have yet to test it on faces, but it’s probably perfect for that near fisheye mumpy up close look. If I get in a tight corner, I’ll be relieved to have this (literally) in my back pocket. My only gripe is that they don’t also have a 35mm/40mm/50mm pancake set, because a range of pancakes this small would be gamechanging for anamorphic adapter users. I never thought I’d have a Kowa setup as small as this. It’s crazy. Until a new anamorphic beats the Kowa for width and quality, I’m sticking with it.

Nice little set up... all I would add are some lugs to attach a strap to. I find if you have a camera hanging from your neck by a strap, nobody even notices you. I could probably dangle an Alexa Mini around my neck and nobody would look at me twice at the locations I’m shooting at.

I had that lens nearly glued onto my BMPCC. ? Not too big on big rigs on cameras that were designed to be small to start with. Sort of defeats the purpose.

  20. Wow! That's a really nice move by Panasonic - really looking after us early adopters. Suddenly now, this is definitely the best value for money pro mirrorless camera at $2500 (or so).
    1 point
  21. Then who are they targeting? I'll tell you what, they had better start targeting a real market because if they don't their L-Mount is destined to fail. Once we get into the $4k mark, I start to consider dedicated cinema cameras... not so much hybrids. For that money I want build in XLRs, NDs etc... For hybrids unless they are bringing something very unique... like the GFX 100 or purpose build sports cameras such as the 1DXMk2, I prefer a smaller more manageable size/weight. I really think Panasonic blew it on this one. I think many will praise it... but those praise will not translate into actual sales. It's not that I'm opposed to new cameras. I will probably pickup the GFX 100 when it comes out. I just need to see some more footage. Granted, I want it mainly for stills. In the end, I think this new Panasonic is an answer to a question that no one was asking.

    Panasonic S1 Firmware Update

Confirmed. The firmware is free for existing S1 customers and new buyers until September 30th! Can't wait to get mine. I was an early adopter. Bought my S1 by April 4th, so got free battery grip, free battery, free 3-year extended warranty, and now free upgrade for $2500. Bargain of the year!

  23. But isn’t this the head scratcher? Nobody is doing it because there’s likely not a market for it. The people who are using a Red or Venice probably don’t want the form factor of the S1H and how many hybrid shooters really need or want 6K? Dont get me wrong, as a no budget shooter that loves the practicalities the DSLR Revolution offered to indie filmmakers, I think the S1H is a great idea... if it had IBIS and was $3000 or less... preferably closer to $2500. But as it stands, I just don’t see the point of it? Being FF, it’s not a great B-Cam to a Varicam or EVA1. For the price, you may as well spend the little extra and get an EVA1. I don’t know... I’m sure it will have a nice image and I can see its appeal to a niche user... but... ehh... I’d rather have a P4K or an X-T3 and a Speedbooster.
    1 point
  24. Because it's full frame? I'm in the camp that thinks full frame is overrated. I'm happy with my micro four thirds loser sensor (™Camera Conspiracies)!

  25. Is it 4k 60p 10 bit 422 recorded internally? Its full frame or cropped?
    1 point
  26. If all you shoot is slow motion, then the S1H is definitely worth $2000 more than the S1. You don’t even need IBIS with slow motion. I think the bigger question is if it’s worth the $2500 more than an X-T3 and a Speedbooster?
    1 point
  27. I think that those who pay for it 4000$-4500e and put Leica on it - simply will not see any moire (or it will be cinematic one, sort of anew-dreamy).
    1 point
  28. Pretty interesting. The S1 is a bargain with almost everything except 6K and full frame 4K60p. This thing could still have legs with firmware updates since they designed it with thermals in mind. Extremely odd they didn’t not mention bitrates. Maybe still a work in progress?

  30. If it is - as seems - replication of GH line, than why to expect IBIS... We learned from many threads that all serious filmmakers don't use that stupid IBIS that produce microjitters and doesn't allow to put camera on cars...

  31. Wonder how well adapted glass works. If I was going for the S1 I'd probably go the speedbooster route to get that medium format look. Not going to lie if it had built in ND's it would go right to the top of my going to buy list. Even without it though the S1 is attractive and the S1H even more so.

  32. I never saw such funny brief-presentation speaker I think we scared Panasonic and as result there's last minute dumping of price to the lowest strategic level
    1 point
  33. I mean, there's no camera on the market that can do what it can do in that price range. And given there was speculation that it'd be in the $6k range, $4k sounds reasonable enough. If you think the A7Siii will be that much cheaper, and come even close to the capability of the S1H without the risk of exploding you will probably be really disappointed. I too though am waiting for the GH6.

  36. That has nothing to do with cameras though, especially specs and pricing. Japan's debt to GDP ratio is the worst in the world, by the way, 246%. Probably that means that Japanese are not as amazing as we believe them to be. Maybe Australians (40%) and Chinese (17% but it can be substantial more in reality) they get what people want. Definitely has something to do with leadership though. It took Nikon and Fuji ages to realize the potential of video on modern cameras, and in just 1 generation (Nikon Z) and 2 (XT-3) they are doing it right. Sony did experiment for 3 generations until delivered the A7iii that decidely turned the odds in favor of Sony. Canon did great with the first and a half generation of their C cameras, and they stayed there!

@BTM_Pix those look great. I love the way you color your work with those cool tones. Did you have to use an IR Cut filter? I was seriously considering the P4K, but after some serious thought, I’ve decided to slowly build a Micro rig that is cine camera based but also as compact as possible. How do you think the OG Pocket holds up against the P4K?
    1 point
  40. Yeah, this is spot on. I’m still excited for the release and hope there are some more surprises. I really enjoy Panasonic cameras. They get a lot right with ergos and menus systems, codecs options, and firmware upgrades. I enjoy using my GH5S way more than when I had a A7iii. I think the image looks way better and has more weight to it. I’m don’t put bokeh as high on my list as other people. I do wish though that if they can’t improve their CDAF then they should use PDAF in the meantime. I think the S1 has improved in that regard, not a leap, but a skip and a hop. I do wish they would continue to push the boundaries like they did with the GH5 2 years ago with things like built in vari-NDs in DSLR form factor.

I'm expecting it to fare better on the P4K with its greater sensitivity as it was getting fairly marginal on the OG Pocket that I was using it on at times in lower light.

  42. Yes because I'm getting a bit bored of juggling all of my other unfinished symphonies. This is a pretty comprehensive camera app that does the capture end of it but you still need to do the merge in an external app but thats no bad thing in terms of the extra finessing standalone HDR merge apps provide. https://www.camerafv5.com/tutorials/hdr_tutorial.php

  43. Why is the flip screen somehow never an issue for SONY A7 cameras? Or for the Nikon Z6 and Z7 for instance? I only seem to see that much moaning about the flipscreens on the S1/S1R. Just read through the whole thread and you do nothing but bash the S1/S1R and the S1H, a camera none of us have seen yet. Do you have a vested interest in this somehow?

  44. Probably I'm too idealist, but I firmly think that keeping and going on with once upon a time true and enough enthusiastic spirit is the most important. Isn't is so that this very forum started along with art-for-all liberation impulse given with ML Canon 5D II and, even more, with GH2? Comparatively, all movie makers world has been shaken than with quality of these cameras that stay within reach even to students and other talented dreamers... Tones of serious movies were shot with Canon as B, many as A camera (and most directors has to admit that public wouldn't notice if all works had been done with Canon), Upstream Color was done with GH2 - because these camera indeed were comparatively so capable... And now, it seems to me that all of us are little bit forgeting our dreamer's past - of course, now we can provide more money, now we can pay more, most of us listening GAS thirst and escaping from bore living - but comparatively equally capable successors of 5D and GH2 today don't live at home of Panasonic and Canon, simply because they don't care for that great past spirit which made them so beloved and popular. Of course S1H or A7SIII or GH6 are/will be beast - but not anymore for new generation of young dreamers. And me idealist feel it as a curse. Sorry to ask/remind obvious - what about Pocket 4K?

And this is one of those three. I have quite a few cameras with MFT mount but I've never really bought anything from the mid let alone high end range of native lenses. Partly because I have lenses that I'd sooner use through adapters but also because I just baulk at the price of them really. As a consequence my collection mainly consists of cheap secondhand editions of the lower end stuff but while I was away I spotted a cheap used edition of a mid end one, the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4, and bought it as I was looking for a fastish (by MFT standards) standard zoom with stabilisation. As this one has a bit of extra reach on the long end, albeit at the loss of some speed, I thought it made even more sense and I have to say its not bad at all, although it probably distorts more than I would like at the wide end. For use as an all round travel zoom, particularly with a non stabilised camera like the OG Pocket Cinema Camera that I was using it with here, I think its a keeper.

I don’t mind. Please do. I’m practically flying blind with this damn MacBook Air screen, so I imagine half of my images look jacked. But since I posted those frames, I looked at a bunch of other ones and I came to a conclusion. I need to just keep this stuff simple. I am not that talented at it and I need to get back to the writing portion rather than laboring over lenses. So, I think I am going to roll with my first, gut purchases... my Canon and Nikon lenses and the Samyang. This will keep my collection way below 10 and I’ll use the proceeds to invest in a better monitor.

  48. Did you hear the end where he says he would choose it over the A7III? By the way, I tested the Canon FD 20mm 2.8 again, and it's very good, with very little end distortion. It would probably be perfect for a gimbal. If you were familiar with Sareesh's presentations and reviews you'd know he is very, very blunt. Note how much he praised the color and image, and said the IBIS is better than the Sony? You're not going to get a perfect review from this guy. He routinely shoots on Alexas and top end movie cams.
