Absolutely. I also think that people don't know they want something until it is invented or becomes feasible. For example, when 1080p was released no-one turned around and said "I want a camera that can record four times the resolution of FullHD, I want it to be the size of a match-box, have a screen on the back and also one on the front so I can film myself and see if I'm in frame, and I want it to do magic so that it looks like a professional steadicam operator is holding it, and I absolutely need all these features and will accept nothing less because I'm going to be using it to make my own TV show starring me and I'll get paid by doing advertisements for brands that reach out to me, not me to them". Now it exists and people are criticising it because the bitrate isn't high enough.6 points

Yes the whole point of ML for me, is that the images are artistic, low-fi, messed-up, film like, amazing to grade... The opposite of modern 8K digital. No matter how good our expensive full frame mirrorless cameras get, there will always be a place for a ML raw video or Digital Bolex Super 165 points -

First of all, this is not some big comprehensive review but just a brief look and some samples that I took on the first day that I took it out. OK, with that disclaimer out of the way, lets have a look at it. The H3-VR is an integrated ambisonic microphone array and recorder and you can find the full product information here https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h3-vr-handy-recorder Basically, what it allows you to do is record the output from its 4 microphones either as a stereo binaural track or as a 4 channel ambisonics B format which you can then manipulate in post to effectively simulate changing the mic position after the fact. If you want a bit of a primer on ambisonics then this link will sort you out https://www.waves.com/ambisonics-explained-guide-for-sound-engineers I've mentioned the H3-VR a few times in responses in various threads about field recording, particularly with regard to ambient tracks, so on my last trip I decided that it was time to put my money where my mouth was and actually buy one. Well, with the proviso that I found one cheap enough, which I did, so here we are. First impressions are that it is much smaller than I had expected which is no bad thing and very, very light so its not going to be a problem to mount it on a camera. Here it is on the very diminutive OG Pocket Cinema Camera which I was using for testing it with. Incidentally, the foam shield is included in the box but I'd budget for a deadcat if you are using it outdoors and I'd probably also caution against mounting like it is here as it is very prone to handling noise even as transference from operating the camera controls. It is very straightforward to use as it has a good menu system and you can record in an array of stereo and B format modes and it also has a headphone monitor which you can select to be stereo or binaural. This option is also available on the line out so for the examples further down they are sent to the camera as a binaural mix but still recorded in B format in the recorder for later manipulation if necessary. To make post sync easy, you have the option for it to send a tone burst to the camera at the start of each recording and the H3-VR also has an inbuilt gyro so that it knows which way is up as it where in terms of where the microphones were during the recording. This function is also used for shooting 360 videos as it allows the unit to be connected upside down under a 360 camera to keep it out of shot and also enables you to use it in end-fire mode. Specs wise, it can record in various formats up to and including 24bit/96Khz so you can have a decent amount of headroom for your recordings but there is also a limiter and lo cut filters to give you a bit more security. My interest in this system is partly for VR but primarily for general ambience recording to create a more immersive soundscape with the ability to do some manipulation of the sound targeting in post production. Its worth bearing in mind that until very, very recently, having a B format microphone array and recording setup (let alone one that can fit in a large pocket and runs off two AA batteries) was a very specialist niche with a price tag to match so you'll have to manage your expectations about matching something like that but I've got to say that for me its going to be a very useful little item to supplement rather than replace other sound recording gear I've got. For these examples, I chose two different scenarios (although they are only about 15 minutes walk away from each other in Tokyo!) to illustrate its use in capturing soundscapes with different densities and degrees of subtlety. The audio on these is from the line out of the H3VR set to binaural stereo straight into the OG Pocket Cinema Camera whilst the H3-VR was recording them internally in the 4 channel B Format (Ambix in this case). Make sure you put some decent headphones on to listen and you should be able to pick up some degree of height and rear positioning of sounds within the environment and as objects move around it. If you want to experiment with manipulating the B format files, Zoom have a standalone player that enables you to do this This is available free from https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h3-vr-handy-recorder#downloads And I have put the original B format files from the H3VR from the videos above for you to download and use with it here https://mega.nz/#!RqYQXSpB!Ydluy4G-ouMIEJbJyWWTAzcG4DIUU47G2GNKhMyVpJM OK, thats it for now, as this is very much just an initial look at it and I'll return to flesh it out with more information as I use it a bit more but hope some of you can find some use in it.3 points

Couldn't agree more! Now the bar has been raised, it really is time for internal BRAW, ProRes RAW, ProRes 422 and internal NDs. First one to bring all that to a full frame mirrorless camera will sell a boat load if it's priced right. The internal ND should also have an Auto mode like FS5. None of that old filter wheel mechanical stuff. Does anyone know the patent status of that material? Maybe there is a secret market out there where a bloke sits in a room with a RED Monstro 8K VV and makes a TON of money shooting 8K stock footage of plants, birds and the occasional duck??!3 points -

Thanks. ML works fine with external monitors, I have a smallHD 501 and AC7, but in this case I was using a Zacuto Z-Finder, the extra point of contact with my face helps with stabilization.I left the Ronin-M at home, didn't need it, and doing up to 19 hour days I had no time for it. Thanks. Yeah, the 5D Mk3 raw looks good upscaled to 4K, I have no complaints about the resolution, the 35 Leica is 70s vintage and not the sharpest lens either. Well they 'say' they are aiming at pro business and 'Hollywood' but I dont think this is really the market. It looks to be a classic Apple case of 'building and image' for a product that is more style than substance. My guess is this product will be very popular with 'CEOs' and 'Chairman' of companies who like a bit of 'bling' in their office and who will say it is a 'beast' as they use it to do their emails and surf the web. I'll bet they will sell a ton!!3 points -

Hmm https://www.eoshd.com/2019/06/apple-targets-red-users-hollywood-and-corporations-with-controversial-new-10000-mac-pro-system-and-6k-display/ So this machine is kind of a tactic admission by Apple they lost the prosumer desktop market to Windows PCs and have given up ever trying to get it back. So they are aiming at pro businesses and studios, not individuals. If you are an individual who can afford to drop over $11k in one go on a base spec Apple computer + 6K screen, and perhaps more like $18,000 if you want the better specced versions, you are very lucky indeed and in an absolutely vanishingly tiny minority!! It beats me why they did not also announce a $2k upgradable modular desktop for the rest of us??? Or does it... PCs, that's why. But I want Mac OS and I am pretty upset at having to stick with comparatively slow iMacs and MacBooks for so many years. The 2013 Mac Pro is a bit of a bad joke in performance terms in 2019 by the way, so that's not an option either.3 points -

For the majority of content creators (including my self) this machine simply does not exist. It was released yesterday in a parallel universe. Stop looking at it. If you need 28 cores and 1.5 TB of RAM for your every day jobs then this price tag is probably just fine for you. If you are about to start saving money by sacrificing other needs that you may have, so that you can buy the base configuration in the next year, then don't this. It's just silly. When you are buying the base configuration of a Mac Pro, you are actually paying for things that you can't use until you stuff it with overpriced components. You are paying for the "fact" that your machine has the "ability" to get significant upgrades like 1.5 TB of Ram, 4 TB SSD, 4 x Vega's etc. If you need to "save" money for the base configuration then good luck with the rest. It won't happen. Stop looking at it. The iMac 2019 right now is the perfect balance for almost any content creator that can't afford the new MacPro. iMac Pro is also overpriced for the majority of users. I' am working with iMacs and FCPX for the last 10 years as a full time video editor for TV shows. Every 3-4 years i am selling my iMac and getting the next one, so the actual cost for every upgrade comes to 1500 to 2000 euros. FCPX is a truly unique and reliable application and yes i have worked with Premiere, Vegas and Resolve before. You have to actually "work" with an application and not just "test" it to make conclusions. If you are editing 10 min highlights or low budget commercials then all of these work just fine but wait until you need to edit a full length movie or a 2 hour documentary to see how the app reacts to this massive amount of data. FCPX is "rock steady". Period. A "slightly" upgraded iMac 2019 with Intel Core i9, 1TB SSD and Vega 48 (plus user upgraded RAM to 32 GB) will cost you about 5000 bucks. Is this overpriced? Of course it is. But it's also much faster from the base configuration of the cheese grater and you get a great monitor plus peripherals. Is it upgradable? Of course not. But nothing is upgradable nowadays, even this cheese grater. In about 5 years from now, this badass Mac Pro 2019 and it's tech will be totally obsolete and in 10 years from now that fu*^%ing bul*&@t Afterburner (that i am sure it will cost 10.000.000 dollars plus tax) will be sold for 100 bucks in ebay.2 points -

Yeah! EOS M50 with Magic Lantern would be insane. But it doesn't look like it'll be completed any time soon. By the time it finishes, there will probably be cameras out from Sony/Panasonic that can shoot 10K lol. I'm still loving the upscaled to 4K footage from the outdated ML Cameras LOL.2 points

Well it isnt that surprising. Lumafusion is the killer app on an ipad pro. You can pretty much justify buying an ipad pro on the back of this app. Still if Apple genuinely cares about the app, they really need to let us have the ability to transfer to and from the app via a proper working usb-c port. Really it is very little to ask for from a product with 'pro' in its name (and it would also go a long way in terms of justifying the 'pro' v 'standard' ipad price premium.2 points -

The article I read didn't mention that it was upgradable. That's great if it is, though I still can't justify $6k for it. I think that's double what I paid for my last Mac Pro nearly 10 years ago, if I recall correctly! Mac has always charged a premium, but it was still feasible for enthusiasts and smaller creators to scrape together the money to get a professional machine. Not so much anymore. They've moved on from those folks, unfortunately. If you want a real Mac and don't want to have to take a second mortgage out on your house, you have to get iMacs and overpriced MacBooks with shitty keyboards. Neither are ideal solutions for me, given how rapidly those machines become antiquated. I built a custom PC in 2015 for $1k that blew my 2014 iMac that cost nearly 3 times more out of the water.2 points -

@The ghost of squig welcome aboard, I think you’ll find this place very hospitable... I just started using the 14bit Lossless from the experimental build and am pretty floored by it. It’s breathing new life into the camera. While others are jumping ship, I feel reenergized by the camera. Do you know if it’s available in the Nightlies too? I found the 3.5K to be too buggy and the 3K has too much of a crop, so I don’t really need to run an experimental build if the 14bit Lossless is stable on a nightly.2 points

Nano-rigs - hand-held camera rigs that do it all and fit in your pocket
heart0less reacted to kye for a topic
My finger grip for the X3000 arrived yesterday, it is a very interesting and well designed accessory. The unfortunate aspect of it is that it completely obscures the rear door, prohibiting the use of an external microphone. I've examined it with the intent to drill a hole in order to get a 3.5mm mic jack through the rig and into the camera, but it doesn't look like that is too feasible. I will do some testing with the built-in mics and see what I think. My uses for this camera are mostly without dialogue so ambient (non-directional) audio is probably fine. I think this rig might be one of the most interesting from a "nano-rig" perspective, and it might also be why there are hardly any third-party rigs for this thing - it covers the tiny rig category and if you are fine with larger rigs then the 1/4-20 mount provides you with all the options you would need.1 point -

"I think Apple have made a bit of a misjudgement in not providing a competitive desktop Mac for the masses and smaller creative studios." I do not think so. This is called the iMac and iMac pro. The latest 2019 iMac is very powerful, more than what most of "the masses" need. It bests the iMac Pro in many real world uses. The iMac Pro will soon get an update and fill that gap as well. I recently invested in an iMac and I am amazed. I have a $500 4K 27" screen and it is such garbage compared to the iMac screen. You would spend $1000 for a similarly good screen. The power is amazing, havent restarted the computer in weeks, haven't had a bug since day one months ago, everything is blazingly fast and the system a joy to use. Also having such a clean and simple design of an all in one on my desk leaves room and is nice. I would absolutely hate to have a normal desktop, including the new iMac Pro which to me looks awful by the way. For work, I have from my company the latest Huawei Matebook Pro x which is considered by all major test website to be the best portable windows laptop on the market. It's such a garbage, full of bugs, have to restart it every week before it slows down too much. A PITA. Everything from the slow wake up time to the bad trackpad to the system is a pain. People can continue to cry all day long about how Apple is expensive and I totally agree it is (sometimes justified, sometimes it's ridiculous). But it just works. By the way, the WWDC was the best in years. iPadOS is amazing. The new privacy features on iOS are incredible. Finally Apple is listening to customers. I laughed good times with the $999 screen holder for the new iMac Pro.1 point

Panasonic FF L-mount Cine camera coming
Mmmbeats reacted to currensheldon for a topic
From all the interviews I'v watched, definitely seems there are some big features not yet announced. 6K and Anamorphic are not the only BIG features the S1H has over the S1. Every Panasonic rep has said this and done a bit of "wink wink," wonder what that vent is for, etc etc - it's going to have some other big features (IBIS, internal raw, compressed raw, NDs, something...) and they are just holding back so that when they fully announce the specs (probably early September or so), they have some more headline-grabbing features. Especially since that will be around the time the Sony A7sIII is announced. But we definitely don't know yet what this camera can fully do, but we can be sure it will have quite a few more powerful features to differentiate it from the competition and warrant its $4000 price tag. I will say that if there is one place Panasonic always delivers, it's in value for money - from Varicam LT vs Sony F5/F55/C700 to EVA-1 vs C200/FS7/C300 and, even though everyone says it's too expensive, the S1 (with free firmware forthcoming) vs any other mirrorless/DLSR camera out there.1 point -

I don’t see why some seem surprised. New top end professional Macs have always been expensive. Pretty much always over 5000 in today’s money if not a lot more. Hopefully prices will come down in time and there will be more options. As there has been in the past. This is a computer aimed at professionals. It is good to see Apple going for the serious pros rather than prosumer or gear nerd. It’s a beautiful machine. I would love to have one but it’s not for me that’s for sure. An iMac Pro is basically a throwaway. The initial cost for a Mac Pro will be high initially, but cost will come down as the computer is upgraded over time. That makes a difference in large institutions. Of course there are PC’s that are good value for money. But they are not Mac Pro. Apple has little competition which is why they can charge what they do. People have always attacked Macs for having component Y or X that cost Z and “it’s a rip off” bla bla blah. I’ve heard that literally for decades. And yet, I have yet to work with a better performing computer. I will never understand how some are offended when a camera company, or whatever, releases a product that isn’t for them. The Mac Pro is right for someone, and if it isn’t, the product won’t sell. Simple. Unless it’s some sort of conspiracy! Which is what some resort to with an almost incel-like tone at times. To ridicule those who need for example an EOS R or a Mac Pro, or whatever controversial thing it is, can be a sign of personal insecurity I believe.1 point

Well I think it depends how much control you're able to exert. Often on a low budget shoot, access, time, personel or resources will prevent you from being able to apply the solution you'd like to have. That's when windows start to blow, skies start to pop, and other undesirable things start to happen. At the sharpest end of low-budget you just can't always fight all the fires. Of course there are ways around this with meticulous planning and imaginative framing, but having a camera with superb colours and high DR sure would be a helping hand.1 point

There are intangibles that set aside the image from proper cinema cameras over prosumer cameras that go way beyond the spec sheet. If Panasonic really are putting all of their highly-regarded Varicam / EVA science into a $4K tool, then that is a remarkable facility to have available. Perhaps looking at the incremental steps up from GH5 and S1 is the wrong way to look at this camera, and it is better to measure the incremental step down from the existing cinema lines. As an example, if it lives up to the way Panasonic are selling it, this could be an option for micro-budget feature films, could it not? £4K for an image you could potentially put up on a movie screen?1 point -
