JVC is back with a new cinema camera!!
Sanka and 2 others reacted to BrooklynDan for a topic
I chimed in and left my two cents. Full frame, anamorphic support, SDI, color science, etc, etc. I also insisted that the camera have a shoulder-mounted form factor. I simply do not understand why people have their arms wrapped around the mirrorless style even for dedicated cinema cameras. We have 100+ years of cinema camera design behind us, and none of them looked like a stills camera. In case you forgot what a real cinema camera looks like:3 points -
why not just buy a canon. there's like 5 different models with three different tiers, surely you could find something to suit your budget ?3 points

fuji xt3 or sony a7iii
MrSMW and 2 others reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
A73 is going to give you a noise free image past 12,800 iso. Color is pretty good with HLG. Definitely a lot of lens options going into the future like webrunner said. The XT3 was my camera of choice for its internal 10 bit and high speed recording, as well as its color science. Kind of depends on your needs though. The XT30 plus the fuji 18-55 is a hell of a combo for anyone on a budget.3 points -

I have to say Jon came off as very aggressive. Not that he didn't often have goods points and I don't think was a bad guy. After all we are just talking about cameras here, I don't think anyone really needs to be labeled a good or bad person, this isn't war! I think people have a tendency to just go with the flow. So when someone like Andrew goes against the tide and starts calling people out he might be perceived as a jerk rather than someone simply saying what he actually thinks.2 points -

if you had video and and some vintage lenses and were moving into 35mm then i would buy a system that could use the lenses i already had and build onto it from there. of course that doesn't work so well for medium format or bigger. Believe it or not but i have a nikon coolscan sitting under my desk. i somehow lost my desktop with the raid controller when i moved. i have no idea how one loses a complete computer but i did. slowly been putting an older system together that could run the old scanner, but well video keeps getting in the way.2 points -
Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
webrunner5 and one other reacted to Thpriest for a topic
It depends on the work you are doing. The GH5 is the only 'photo' camera that can really act like a video camera when it comes to things like long recording times. I've had one running nonstop filling 2 128gb cards (4k 8 bit) in a conference with sound fed to the xlrs. I'm not sure any other similar camera could do that. Video is not just films and short fancy edits.2 points -

My biggest beef with e Fuji is lenses or the lack there in. True these is not a lot of cheap Sony FE lenses, but there is a ton of adapters out there for there compared to the Fuji. Plus there is a good upgrade path with Sony, not so much with Fuji. But the XT-3 is a damn nice camera for the money. Not an easy choice.2 points -

Blind Color Science Test
Castorp and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I shot hours and hours of footage to create EOSHD Pro Color. Sony's latest cameras still need it. Fuji is superior. This YouTube clickbait, is not even a proper test. It's some unknown, unstated default settings, completely unoptimised. With maybe 1 or two button presses, the entire result would change. Max has a well known Sony bias, and I simply don't trust what he's showing here is representative. If the Fuji is too green for your liking, and you are sure Max hasn't fiddled the results like he fiddled the poster frame, you know what to do about it. There's a hue control, a white balance control, a saturation control and 8 different film simulations.2 points -
JVC is back with a new cinema camera!!
Kisaha reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
@Kisaha I'd like to see a shorter body for sure. But 99% of my shots are on a tripod or glidecam, so the handheld-friendly grip and form factor of a C100/XC15 is not that important to me. If it has a handgrip, I'd like it to be removable. AFAIK the XC15 grip is fixed, and has the battery inside? I haven't actually used one. A big heavy grip to one side makes it that much more difficult to balance on a glidecam. I did like the ability to strip down the C100 somewhat, though it was still a little top heavy in my opinion. A lower center of gravity is easier for balance. And thought I haven't used a C100 much, and perhaps there is a way to customize the buttons, one thing I hated was that I had to press the ISO button and THEN use the wheel to change the value. I like DSLR style dedicated wheels for each function, so that you can change ISO or shutter speed in one press instead of two. I'm not big into anamorphic either, but it is nice to have different aspect ratios in general. It's always nice to frame and record in the native project format. I've been requested to frame for 4:3, and even 1:1 (for social media).1 point -

HockeyFan12 reacted to Kisaha for a topic
There is a whole subforum for anamorphic, you can take the conversation there. I do not believe anamorphic is a big deal for most people, it can be helpful for some but these type of cameras are bread bringers, mostly just tools. LS300 sold quite well here for weddings, in schools/institutions and the such. It was an advanced camcorder with some great innovation thrown in. @KnightsFan I found the body not convinient for anything really. XC15 or C100mkII are my favorite. Imagine an XC15 body and grip with almost any small prime in front and the variable zoom prime function. Masterpiece!1 point -

Yeah auto focus is still not practical for bigger productions imho. Most people using super expensive equipment are renting not buying, but $500 for a weekend is still pricey when you might be used to owning a piece of glass for $500.1 point -
Blind Color Science Test
newfoundmass reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
All comments on the forum by new users start off in a moderation queue, and until they're approved they're automatically hidden by the server. Without this important control, the forum will have a daily stream of Viagra posts. Max's first post is on page 1, and he's explained some of the test and admitted the poster frame is manipulated to catch the attention of YouTube's clickbait algorithm controlled audience. I do admit my reaction was a bit harsh and it's nice of Max to finally say hello, but if he's bought Pro Color previously, he's clearly been around lurking and probably using the blog for inspiration for quite a few years now, without bothering to strike up any kind of friendship, email, or to my knowledge any mention on his YouTube channel. So that's not very endearing. Either way, I just find it difficult to trust somebody who tweaks the facts in pursuit of clicks. It's nothing personal. It's the internet and it's happening all the time... and I do not respect it. I don't know why Jon's being mentioned all of a sudden. Jon used to be a moderator here, until he started being weird and aggressive to pretty much everybody, then he turned into a Sony fanboy and got even more aggressive, had a fight with Jon Brawley and lost his mod privileges. This was entirely his own fault. Then I finally kicked him out after he argued in every thread with Ed David who I consider a far more talented filmmaker and a much nicer person, so from that point on it was Goodbye, and you see the result now from Jon with his bitter words in his Vietnamese diary. I don't shy away from confrontation with people I think are bad for business, or bad for the community of EOSHD. I'd rather confront. Same with lies and clickbait. Confront, expose and guide people to the facts.1 point -

I'd love a camera that can easily be mounted on the shoulder. The issue is it makes mounting on a gimbal a no go, at least affordable ones.1 point -
The only problem I have with full frame anamorphic support is there are no lenses that anyone buying a $4k cinema camera would purchase. You're looking at a minimum of $3k per lens... even for garbage SLR Magic full frame primes. To think the whole set can be had for what they use to ask for a single lens? ... and still I wouldn't buy them. Honestly, I wouldn't even take them for free. So anamorphic wise what does that leave?... your best current option is perhaps ther Orion optics lenses... so $24k for a set. Those aren't an option for operators that spend $4k for a body. And don't even think about zooms... they start at $65k... and that lens doesn't even cover full frame. And AF with an anamorphic? Sorry nothing exist. If anyone makes a cinema camera with built in Anamorphic zoom, reasonably fast, a nice image, minimum of 10 bit, a editable codec, 14-16 stops dynamic range, clean iso to 6400 and good AF... with a rotating screen... that can use affordable media... Well, they will sell like hotcakes. And don't tell me they can't make a decent quality anamorphic zoom with AF with clutchable manual option for reasonable money. Anamorphics have been around from the 1920's... It can be done. And mark my words... the first cinema camera that includes this feature in a practical way will be a big hit. I'm astounded that no one has done it yet. Anamorphic is synonymous with cinema.1 point

Blind Color Science Test
IronFilm reacted to Papiskokuji for a topic
I find this test to be very poor ! Testing skin tones in a forest with green reflexion everywhere, or in backlit situations... Nevertheless I think Max is being honest. I’m puzzled by the permanent suspicion toward people. Regarding his supposed Sony bias, he used to shoot with two gh5. He made a very positive review about the X-T3 and the blackmagic pocket 4K as well. And he’s in his own right to shoot with Sony like many pros do. He won’t be switching cameras between every video and the workflow that comes with it. He settled on Sonys (which I’m not even sure). Caleb shoots on the GH5s, Matti on Canon... Everytime you say something nice about a camera, you are biased. I have every camera brand, I just did a review (mostly positive but fair) of the bmpcc4k and it didn’t miss. You always get the « he works for blackmagic » comment... If only. It’s ridiculous. Max tests are always questionned. But I always come to the same conclusion with his sharpness, low light and autofocus tests. Sometimes his tests lack details but it’s almost impossible to cover it all. I remember all the suspicion his gh5 vs a6500 AF test raised. It wad insane. People couldn’t accept the simple fact that the GH5 has a terrible autofocus and Sony PDAF is way ahead. Canon being the best. Give the guy a break, his last video is not his best but his tests have been very useful for a lot of people and take a lot of time to do. There are way worst youtubers out there !1 point -
bmp4k adventures
webrunner5 reacted to leslie for a topic
well its been a week or so, got some pics with the canon 60d attached to the elmoscope. Not sure why, but i find it much easier to double focus with the canon attached to the elmo compared to the bmp4k, maybe i'm used to the canon, it seems really odd to me that there is such a difference. But it could be just me. Is there anyone else out there that's stuck a 2x anamorphic in front of a bmp4k ?. Like to know how it went for you. As i said i took a couple pics yesterday i was quite literally running out the door, wanted to get the elmoscope and pentax m42 85mm across to the machinist, should have it back by next friday. Then i should be sorted i hope. i had the 18-55 kit lens on the canon, wanted to see if it vignettes at what focal lengths, it vignettes slightly at 55mm to really badly at 18mm, but how do you know if you dont try ? not sure if my scope is not vertical or i wasn't hold the camera correctly but ignore the leaning brickworks lol its just for testing. i guess i have to get into the habit of putting it onto a tripod even when in a hurry. Hopefully the pics i uploaded turn out more anamorphic than the last attempt1 point -

i doubt their too concerned about us. We hit about 380 pages before the bmp4k even shipped.if they were interested in excitement you'd see more action from captain hook or some other person from bm. Besides bm have their own forum, surely they would consult with the party faithful before us or another forum Not that i'm complaining its nice to see the occasional post from bm with what ever they feel pertinent about and correcting the odd post thats got incorrect information in it, which i think is also nice. They sprang the no more dng files with no warning. i expect that will continue, no idea how deep the rabbit warren is but its bm who have theirs hands on the wheel so buckle up and enjoy the ride or get a sony ?1 point -

Shooting Film For Stills - Am I Crazy?
webrunner5 reacted to Django for a topic
I bought a Leica M9 two weeks ago. It's digital but the closest to shooting film imo. All manual control, no EVF, the LCD is worthless so you don't really know what you shot until you get home, slow buffer, low storage (16GB cards max). No AF obviously, and parallax range finder focus system. All this REALLY slows you down, in a good way of course. The best is the resulting IQ from the Kodak CCD sensor. Super filmic analog look. I am tinkering with the thought of getting an M6/M7 which are film cameras but for now the M9 is best of both worlds.1 point -

Hi AL: Thank your your help. It made me think more about what is going on with the Smooth Track settings and the interaction with the trigger. To solve my problem I did the following: Set up a custom profile for User 2 Smooth Track Settings Speed High Deadband low (I have mine set at 10) Sensitivity High Now when I rotate my body (and trigger not depressed) the Ronin S maintains it position relative to my body and allowing me to create my pan. Thank you again for your input. Don1 point -

Wow really harsh words... The test is not perfect, but I'm not sure what test would be. When planning for this video I had a lot of thought on how to do it, but settled on this method since it has the least user input. As you know, both the Fuji and Sony can be tweaked like crazy inside of camera, and of course in post but I chose to mess with the cameras the least. I'm not sure why you say the results are unstated or unknown. I explained the profiles, settings, and why I used them at the start. Of course the with a few presses the results would change, that why I tried not to do customize things so we can see the cameras colors instead of my tweaks. This is not a perfect test, but I did try to make it a fair one. I shot different exposures to get them to best match up since you can't just get the same exposure by matching settings. The first 4 tests are right out of the camera just like you would grab and shoot (other than setting the correct WB preset). The next 6 where using a flatter subdued profile. Sony is terrible with their profiles but PP6 is fairly popular and is what I use most often. It also reminds me a bit of Eterna which is also popular. With both I usually add contrast and saturation (for my taste) but for this test I wanted to keep Eterna at the default and only boosted PP6 to match up with Eterna or else the Sony would be really really flat. I think the contrast and saturation was matched up quite well, some colors pop more on the Sony and others on Fuji but the point is to compare colors and each camera has its own profiles. I could have used more profiles or added LOG, but then I don't think the results would be as accurate since LOG really depends on how you grade and the video would be really long and most people would end up not doing the test for themselves which is the point. Yes the thumbnail was exaggerated. Unfortunately unlike having your own site on YT we are at the Marits of the algorithm and if the thumbnail is flat then your videos dies with 5K views instead of 50-100K. None of the tests were touched. If they would you would think I being so called "Sony biased" would make the Sony look better LOL, but I'm not in that game. Like I said at the end I prefer the fuji colors and they are definitely ahead if you're not going to do color correction/grading in post. Surprisingly a majority of people preferred the Sony look. I am not a Fuji hater, I have reviewed them really highly. Saying things like "If the fuji is too green... You know what to do" makes it seem like you're Fuji biased. The Sony's can be tweaked too and you have guides for that (which I purchased) thank you btw. Whats funny is if you see my comparisons where I say Fuji is better I am called a Fuji loved and biased. Same thing goes for the Sony videos, the Panasonic videos, and back in the day when I was praising the NX1 (which I still own 3 of btw) I was told that I'm really biased against Canon, Sony, and Panasonic for praising the AF and Colors of the NX1. Sure I have my biases as we all do (to not admit it means your a liar) but typically they are preferences and I try to point those out and why I have them, and if you watch my comparison i'll often point out the flaws of Sony and areas where other brands really excel. Anyways, if you would be willing to do a similar color science test I would absolutely love to see it, and if you have constructive criticism on how I could improve in future versions of this video (say a Sony vs Canon video) I would love to hear and implement it.1 point

Wanted to share my first trial with Canon EOS M, Magic Lantern RAW and vintage lenses. Also the first time I use Davinci Resolve for editing and grading. Overall I'm quite happy with the results. Here's the link: https://youtu.be/bDT8-ChgzrE. Make sure to watch it in 4K, even on non-4K screens, because it has way less compression artefacts. Shot in mv1080 at 1736x976 resolution, 25fps. Using Helios 44-2, Mir 1B and maybe in some shots the Jupiter 9. Also used two stacked polariser filters as variable ND. Didn't use a LCD viewfinder, but plan to use one next time. Need to get more stable shots, so I applied stabilisation in post. Sound recorded with Rode VideoMicro.1 point -

How to get Canon-like skin tones?
pryde reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
According to Art Adams (and confirmed by my own observations), the secret to Canon's skintones is that they push red slightly toward orange. Since most blemishes are redder than the surrounding skin, it makes them blend in and provides an overall creaminess that's not color accurate but is aesthetically pleasing. They also push green tones slightly toward blue to compensate for and contrast with the abundance of orange.1 point -
