  1. I win! https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id=sdigpandcgx800bob&categoryName=cameras-compact-system&superCatName=electronics&title=panasonic-lumix-dc-gx800-(body-only)-b 4K for £135 But this got me thinking as well... What if we have a fun "EOSHD Challenge" where we all trawl the bargain bins in our local towns and online, pick something for super cheap, could be $50, $100, no more than $150 or $200... Make a video with it. Then the winner is judged in a poll - on artistic merit, and technical image quality (can be 1080p of course) The winner, wins the camera of the last place guy ? Plus a special bonus camera from EOSHD. What do you think? Worth setting up a challenge like this?

  2. By the way, one slight drawback here is the price variation in different markets. Most notably in Sweden where some of the prices I've seen him get gear for means that @Mattias Burling might well end up shooting his $150 entry on an Alexa

  3. I usually don’t like to say negative things on forums that are not constructive but this video of Gerald... « c’est chaud ! » ? as I would say in french. I have to agree with webrunner5 on this one. It’s ugly as shit. Even the artistic choice argument is barely acceptable here. It’s a shame because it’s the first time he takes some risks to express his artistic/technical skills and I appreciate the effort. Maybe it has to do with the fact it was his first time with the camera... Boy, I have to say something nice now, I don’t want to turn into webrunner5

  4. Tomato/Tomato to some degree but as he has stated it was a deliberate "artistic choice" for it to look like that then it was the technical choices that had to serve the aesthetic rather than than the aesthetic being a by-product of the technical choices. I learnt this lesson the hard way when failing to achieve a Kraftwerk aesthetic on my last album by using a mandolin and a French horn. Well, as I say, he's impressed quite a lot of people with that choice judging by the comments, many of whom find it to be very evocative for them of the work of Philip Bloom. I'm not really au fait enough with the entire canon of Bloom's work to know whether he ever had a Handycam period so I don't have sufficient insight to challenge that.

  8. Looking at the WEX deals, the D200 in particularly is very capable. Good ergonomics as well. The Fuji S5 Pro I bought from WEX cost more than the D200, but it's got the Fuji CCD. Colour is lovely and it came boxed almost as if it's never been used. Not bad for £120! It also somewhat blows my mind that you can now get a Fuji X-T1 for £160. Nothing for that price can touch it for mirrorless photography. The EVF, the lovely design, decent AF and very capable sensor. On the video side, the GX80 is a bargain at £160 as well... 5 axis IBIS and 4K, plus I hear some bloke will give it CineLikeD if asked nicely?!

  9. Everyone should try a gorilla pod for handheld video... It gives you four points of contact on the body. 2 legs of the pod are on your chest or lower shoulder area, the 3rd leg acts as a handle. The 4th contact point is the EVF of the camera held to the eye. When you try this, you wonder if you even need IBIS. IBIS is making us lazy and its floaty. I am going to shoot a test where I use an X-T3 with the pod, and compare it to X-H1 with IBIS bare bones... See which looks most cinematic and steady. Obviously the pod isn't going to provide dolly in the sky like movements, but it replicates the look of a steady shoulder rig on the cheap and easy

  10. Just an update on this.. The reality was a whole lot different. Incredibly slow auto import from from SD card, erratic behaviour in terms of it not always copying all files from the card and really slow wireless even on 5.8Ghz. Nice blue LED on it though.

  11. Have had to many issues with non-OEM batteries dying on me suddenly to buy them further. Only buy official brand ones now. Not something I consider worth cheaping out on.

  12. Well maybe if you learned to hold the camera better and walk with it better you might save yourself a lot of money and aggravation. If you think gear is just magically going to make you tons better well good luck with that happening. There, no cuss words. You think IBIS and OIS has been around for 40 years for video? Oh, how did any one Ever make a movie or a short then. If you want to buy some kind of Stabilization buy a Stedicam. EVERY electronic Gimbal looks like crap. That stupid floating look. And it has No clue what you want to do as compared to what You tell a Stedicam what to do. Like I have said 100 times on here. Practice, Practice, Practice. You don't learn this stuff spending your life on YouTube, or even here. This place has turned into a gear forum. You want to make good stuff practice, if you have talent it will come out, if not find a different hobby or profession. You want to find out about the latest gear.. read on.

  13. There is No Cine cameras that have IBIS in them. So I don't see what the hell you would gain going that way. And most of them weigh a ton for a good reason. Buy a freaking Osmo Action and just be happy. Why the hell do people think if they buy a better camera they will be better! The camera is the least of most peoples problems.

  16. At that point it’s a harder choice. For me at least. At $3k or $4k it’s an easy choice. I think most people would prefer the C200 to the EVA1. I think the C200 is a technically superior camera and far more feature-rich. The NDs and DPAF are great. The dynamic range and low light actually seem better to me than anything else under $10k for “cinema” but just by a hair. Dynamic range is just outstanding. Great build quality, best NDs I've used by far (this matters a lot more to me than to most people), DPAF with tap to focus via Wifi or the included monitor, etc. But what’s missing–10 bit intermediate codec, proper timecode sync, good shoulder mounting options–is frustrating. It's not like Panasonic is amazing in that regard: you get 10 bit h264 instead of ProRes, timecode sync that I've read has a tendency to drift (but even the F5 was frustrating for me in this regard, so whatever), and you need a Z finder because Panasonic and Canon both charge $6k for their entry-level EVFs. It's pretty terrible too, but it's something. Personally, I think I prefer the colors on the Panasonic, but that’s largely nostalgia for the dvx100. C200 has more modern color, more neutral imo. The kids would prefer it, but I'm getting old. My favorite cinematography is Kaminski's stuff from around fifteen or twenty years ago. I also associate the "dvx look" with that era subconsciously so it might just be nostalgia.

  17. Awesome idea!!! If I have a vote for rules to help even the playing field... no 4K, no Raw, no ProRes. So 1080p or less compressed codec. I like the idea of a price limit but $150 may be too low... there may only be 3 or 4 ILC cameras that would fall under that category. Maybe $250 or $300 or less. In the future you could do a P&S challenge, phone challenge, camcorder challenge... etc... Also I’d say make it manual lens only.

  18. Maybe we could do a similar thing also for stills. What's the cheapest APS-C or full frame DSLR which still holds up today... I'd say 5D classic or Fuji S5 Pro Mattias could organise that one? Challenges at different prices could also be interesting... Who has a camera between $300 - $500 that can take a blind test, where people mistake it for a $3000 one? Seen a GH2 for £120 But a G6 is even more bang for buck now

  19. I have to smile a little with this challenge. My freelance kit consists of two gx80’s (same sensor as the gx800). One with the 12-32 kit lens and the other with a borrowed Olympus 45mm f1.8. With them I’ve recently shot five films for Morrison’s (supermarket chain in the UK) and photographed a wedding (but with rented lenses). So it would be less of a ‘challenge’ and more my usual experience lol Having said that I think it’s a great idea Andrew Jonathan

  20. Sony has it's superb IMX410 full frame sensor on the market. Its used in the A7III and Nikon Z6. (And possibly Lumix S1 but not verified yet) If JVC can get Sony to sell it to them, they would immediately have a fully competitive cine camera on that chip alone. If they put it into an LS300 body with ND and 10bit color? If they worked with Atomos on HDMI raw? If they priced it at $4,000? Huge winner fir JVC!! They would undercut Sony, Canon and Panny easily. 21. Really? I find the skin tones with the S much more accurate on the scopes. GH5 has a green/yellow tint in skin tones that I don’t like. Horses for courses I guess.

  22. BTM_Pix

    Panasonic vs Canon Autofocus

The real time depth detection, tracking and object recognition demos I've seen with this of live video (HDMI>CSI converters) can form the basis of an AF system that I think will be integrated within a commercial product within 18 months. Obviously It won't be this specific SBC as its just a consumer development/tinkering board (although it does itself have the potential to be the basis for an outboard system) but the principle will be the same. How is that for a bold prediction

  23. Yeah I find the same with my XT3, which definitely puts me off from buying another camera anytime soon.

  25. I've bought Wasabi batteries and not had an awful time, but I can't claim that I've really tested them hard either. There's no reason that original batteries will always be better. The problem is that after-market batteries are probably price-driven and are therefore likely to be of lower quality, but there's no reason that an after-market supplier can't make a superior product if they decided that there was a market for it. Some after-market batteries claim to have larger capacity or are more durable, and a company could do well and get a reputation if they actually delivered on this. On the other hand, manufacturers often compete on pricing on the camera body, and make more profit on the peripheral items such as lenses or batteries. Yes, they have a brand name to protect with reliability etc, but in any market with an established name the reason that newcomers often grow and steal market-share is that incumbents are often price-gauging...

  26. I think that blown out highlights might be the worst aspect of poor quality digital, for me at least. Worse even than poor resolution, over-sharpening, or low-bitrates with macro-blocking. That's one of the primary benefits of shooting with 10+ bit depth, you can expose for the greatest DR and then choose your middle exposure in post while applying a nice highlight roll-off, and do it without breaking the image. To this end, I haven't really noticed the DR of my GH5 being too low as I can normally get the exposure I want and also not clip highlights.

  27. Do you have vintage glass? The Fuji 23mm and 50mm f2 are great. I use both lenses all the time. If you need fast glass with auto focus they are definitely the way to go. I don't notice a huge difference between the XT3 and XT30 but I don't usually push my footage much in post. Having 4k 60p is nice though.

  29. The Panasonic 12-35 is a great lense. I'm sure it would be good on a GH5s with stabilization turned on. If you absolutely need a new camera the S1 is a good option, especially with the pending firmware update. I'm still incredibly fond of my GH5, whether I'm using an adapted or native lens. The stabilization when using dual IS is great, and is very good even when using a Sigma 18-35 with the Viltrox speedbooster.

  32. Something about this logic doesn't add up. The reason you get an X-T30 instead of an X-T3 is for the smaller size and lower price. So wouldn't it make more sense to add a LARGE and EXPENSIVE external recorder to the X-T3 instead? Doesn't seem to stop Gerald doing a dump on it though, even though he's yet another YouTuber with more money than common sense. Of course the smaller body size limits it thermally, it's very powerful hardware cramped into a smaller space so that's to be expected. It's got the 4K recording time limits for a reason. In other news... https://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/firmware/x/xt30/index.html They fixed the Q button. None of the Fuji hipster designers used the camera after drawing it with their Apple pencils. Good job real engineers exist to save the day!

  35. Flog is not bad in 8 bit. Eterna is a great profile though for 8 bit, pretty nice dynamic range and a nice overall image. I'd definitely recommend the XT30. Its an awesome stills camera too. Using fuji's 18-55mm is like having IBIS. Of course you don't have the luxury of adapting stabilized vintage glass. The ability to throw a speedbooster on and get a full frame look is amazing too. XT30 + Speedbooster + a nifty fifty is awesome.

  37. 6D Mark II is not cinema for me. There is a 1080p frame grab, look at it full screen and it screams digital. Lack of dynamic range, mushy codec, in many ways a step back from even the old 6D. Terrible detail that doesn't pop. Now compare to an X-T3 frame I pulled from Vimeo... World of difference. Details pops, three dimensionally, film like dynamic range and colour. Even if you don't care about 4K delivery, it's a world of difference between a shitty Canon DSLR and a top of the range 2019 mirrorless camera.
