  1. Its better than Gerald Undone's sunset video

  2. Out of my cold dead hands!! So a quick summary of the rules then... 1. Under £150/150euros/$150, to make it simple. I think that also rules out ProRes and 4K but if you genuinely find a camera like that under the price limit, fair play. So I am allowing 4K and better codecs, if you can get em. 2. Proof of purchase receipt. Can be recent. You do not need to buy another camera, but it does have to be within the past 6 months and under $150. 3. No Magic Lantern RAW... It would thrash everything else and make the contest a bit boring. 4. Lens has to be "reasonably priced" and you can only use one. Choose wisely from your existing stuff. I will catch you if you use an Otus. 5. Use whatever else you like, in terms of cards, etc. 6. Tripod or handheld only - so no fancy rigs or sliders. 7. No fancy lights. 8. No fancy actors. 9. You can use slow-mo, if your camera does 60p for example 10. No fancy lens adapters like an expensive Speed Booster 11. Declare your camera (post pictures of it) in the competition thread (once competition has started) 12. In the final video, upload to YouTube or Vimeo with description of what mode you shot in and codec (i.e. 1080p 24p / 720p 60p / etc.) THE GOAL It's a cinematography and mood challenge, to make your camera look AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE. I don't really care about the story or message, although if you want to do one that's fine as well and it may serve the images nicely. Sound can be anything you like - but I'd prefer some emotional attachment with the pictures. It enhances the cinematography and mood a LOT if you get it right. Everything else is up to you. No time limit. No editing limitations, you can use a LUT, colour grade, warp stabilisation, slow-mo, etc. if you think it improves your piece. PRIZE I will pick a winner for the main prize, and there will also be a forum vote for the most popular video. I'll reveal the prize after the entries are in. Would love to do a photography one of these some time as well, in collaboration with another forum member - maybe @Mattias Burling ? Who is in, and who agrees with the 10 rules? Any suggestions welcome. For the start of the competition, please wait for the main blog post... Maybe in a few days, or this weekend. In the mean time... happy shopping / dusting off It's still in the spirit of the challenge if you find a camera as good as that for under $150. I doubt you can though. Remember though, it's the cinematography that matters as well... You can easily make a 4K camera look worse than a much cheaper one if the shooting technique isn't nice

  5. With HDR and HLG becoming more and more common, I'm certain that 10bit will keep moving down the consumer ladder. In order to do HLG "properly" as its white papers say, it needs to be 10bit. Currently, only Sony does HLG in 8bit. The market forces are changing and 10bit will be the new standard for most Alphas and XDCAMs in the future. Im sure the A7S-III will be 10bit. Otherwise, it's going to be dead on arrival.

  6. Yes, of course the man behind the camera can elevate any camera and isn’t that the point of this exercise? But I think some people would definitely use an eos-m and ML Raw and they’ll have a clear advantage. Of course, I’m absolutely fine with it because I already own an eos-m and this challenge will give me a reason to finally mess with the new builds and a c-mount lens... so I take it back... No restrictions other than price, please.

  7. I don't think the camera is the determining factor about skill level. It is the initial thought of what are you going to shoot, and the ability to grade and edit I think is most important. A Smartphone, or a Osmo Pocket sort of proves that point. We are to the point now that even auto everything is really not too bad of a way to go on average. So camera skill is becoming less and less of an advantage. I think even that Gerald Undone video would have turned out better using Auto everything to be honest. This AI stuff is scary good when conditions are not off the chart.

  8. Hmm pretty much the same look output wise I think, with a Lot less convenience. Interesting decision.

  10. Viewing distances + screen size, not just the size. I notice nearly every pixel of a 1080p image on a laptop, sat close to it, and same image at cinema sat way back looks like an 8K film scan

  11. By the way, one slight drawback here is the price variation in different markets. Most notably in Sweden where some of the prices I've seen him get gear for means that @Mattias Burling might well end up shooting his $150 entry on an Alexa

  12. I win! https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id=sdigpandcgx800bob&categoryName=cameras-compact-system&superCatName=electronics&title=panasonic-lumix-dc-gx800-(body-only)-b 4K for £135 But this got me thinking as well... What if we have a fun "EOSHD Challenge" where we all trawl the bargain bins in our local towns and online, pick something for super cheap, could be $50, $100, no more than $150 or $200... Make a video with it. Then the winner is judged in a poll - on artistic merit, and technical image quality (can be 1080p of course) The winner, wins the camera of the last place guy ? Plus a special bonus camera from EOSHD. What do you think? Worth setting up a challenge like this?

  15. Kinda apples to oranges though.. C300mkii is really a run n gun doc video cam that can also do filmy stuff. (Smaller, lighter, easier to use, autofocus) Ursa is a cine cam needs a good bit of rigging to work like a C series cam for run and gun work. (Literally a poormans Alexa, better DR, shit in lowlight, no autofocus, heavier and larger.)

  16. I think this is the final part of the rules, which I haven't yet decided on. What do people think? I don't think the GH2 is under $150 yet, is it? The spirit of the challenge is to try something new... Go on a shopping hunt, a voyage of discovery, researching a new camera you never used, or overlooked when it first came out. But then if you don't have a spare $150 and just want to use the oldest, cheapest camera on your shelf, perhaps that should be allowed as well... provided it is actually now a $150 camera in 2019 on ebay. Yep, that's allowed. LOL. You bought it for $150 or under so it's within the rules. The challenge will be how you get around the damage, without it hurting the image so much that you get voted out of the cinematography challenge

  18. The footage looks great and can only look better with RAW. I agree about some of the editing choice as they could have had less shots play out to tell the story. Less is more in this case. Some shots didn't make sense at all. It was a good watch.

  19. To workaround that, cam2api is truly revolutionary... GCam, Open Camera and FiLMiC PRO are absolutely new camera devices to our shooting arena.

  20. Indeed. I mean, for street photography though. I do a lot... : -)

  21. Absolutely not in my experience. The battery level indicator on the camera has such a vague and usually inaccurate grasp on reality when used with their own battery that it could well become Brexit minister in the new cabinet.

    DVD alternative?

They do exist but whether financially they are viable versus what people would expect to pay for them is another matter. This is one system where you either buy their own USB sticks (at $35 per pop for an 8 gig !) or buy a credit license from $9.95 per disk to encrypt your own. If you source cheap 8 gig sticks then the total cost price is going to be around £12 so it would be hard to make too much of a profit on them compared to how much you'd make at the same retail price if you were using DVDs. https://www.truscont.com/usb-copy-protection/buy-usb-online#credits

  23. Oh I don’t know. Internal NDs, built in XLRs, servo-zoom options (programmed to digital zoom or focus like the LS300). I’d much rather go s35 with those features than FF without them. Then you have codecs etc. JVC already have ProRes in their cameras, so it’s reasonable to assume this one will too.

  24. I think people are probably just pondering it at this stage until there is a definitive call on the rules. I suggest using our friend's MPB as the price guide for what cameras can be used as they are a good mid point between used retail prices and one off bargain eBay prices. So if the rule was that any camera that was available on there at say £150 or under was allowable then I think thats a reasonable bench mark. There are more than enough pedants on here that will destroy the spirit of what this is about arguing over receipts, exchange rates and relative cost of living weightings per geographic area otherwise

  25. Ehhh...maybe. However, I think the industry is demanding full frame right now. Micro 4/3 is fine but a huge number of people are looking at large sensor. Even the Sony Venice broke from the Hollywood standard of super35 and went full frame. Plus, this JVC will need to compete with the Nikon Z6, Lumix S1, S1H and future Sony A7S-III. Its going to be hard to steal those people away with a super35 sensor.

  27. We live funny times today! The guy posts a crappy sample of such capture device beast and there's curiosity about some of his past work... LMAO : ) LOL My vote to post of the year! ; ) And to Gerald, the Razzie of the best excuse of 2019 too and we are in June yet! PS -- Just seen this thread has just reached 1 million of views these days! Congrats, you're in the Guiness Book @Andrew Reid I believe Grant Petty will have no excuses next time to not send you a Mark II sample for the upcoming launch... DVD alternative?

You can encrypt them but as soon as you give the legal owner the key then there is nothing to stop them duplicating the file and giving someone else the key. You can host it online behind a paywall but having to go online every time to view it won't be appealing to consumers and, again, the login can be shared. The app route is the option that gives you the most protection because it is directly delivered to a single device in a form that isn't easy to duplicate. The app can be designated in the app stores as a family sharing app so everyone in the family can share access to it on their own device which I guess would be appropriate for the content that the OP is producing if it involves parents and kids.

  32. The GH5S has more true to life color science from the color chart tests I've seen.
    1 point
  33. Having chosen the virtues of the GH5S over the IBIS of the GH5, I did use IBIS (on my GX80) for a run-around shoot the other day. It was an absolute delight. I used a Zacuto loupe off the screen, and added a small video head for weight. There was some sensor panning going on, but it was smooth and appropriate for the subject (a fast-moving cultural event). The footage was more stable than had I used a monopod. In short I'd be excited to have IBIS as an option on a camera like this. I wonder if the killer combo would be a fully grown cinema camera (for built in everything) + a little mobile number like the SH1?

  34. Sorry for being a nerd: DCI 4K Scope (2.39:1) is 4096x1716. So there's actually a few more horizontal pixels here to play with. Their 4096x1728 and 6144x2592 work out to 2.37:1. So I think they're just listing 2.40:1 as a rough way of saying it's basically scope.

  35. I usually don’t like to say negative things on forums that are not constructive but this video of Gerald... « c’est chaud ! » ? as I would say in french. I have to agree with webrunner5 on this one. It’s ugly as shit. Even the artistic choice argument is barely acceptable here. It’s a shame because it’s the first time he takes some risks to express his artistic/technical skills and I appreciate the effort. Maybe it has to do with the fact it was his first time with the camera... Boy, I have to say something nice now, I don’t want to turn into webrunner5

  36. Doesn't look like anything from Philip Bloom I've ever seen, he always has well exposed highlights. If he was trying to get that cheap camcorder look than I guess thats fine. I don't like the color either tho.

  38. Tomato/Tomato to some degree but as he has stated it was a deliberate "artistic choice" for it to look like that then it was the technical choices that had to serve the aesthetic rather than than the aesthetic being a by-product of the technical choices. I learnt this lesson the hard way when failing to achieve a Kraftwerk aesthetic on my last album by using a mandolin and a French horn. Well, as I say, he's impressed quite a lot of people with that choice judging by the comments, many of whom find it to be very evocative for them of the work of Philip Bloom. I'm not really au fait enough with the entire canon of Bloom's work to know whether he ever had a Handycam period so I don't have sufficient insight to challenge that.

  39. He is using a camera that has 13 stops of DR. I really don't think he put them to very good use. He can call it what he wants. He needs to buy a light meter I guess, and a graduated ND filter. He sure as hell ought to know better. If that is what you want your followers to think is the best that camera can do, the best He can do, well they need to follow someone else. If I was BMD I would be pissed. That is a pretty amateur, piss poor, looking video. He is from Canada. I guess it is the first time he ever seen the sun.
    1 point
  40. Every technical choice has an aesthetic association. It might not be the same association across different groups of people, but everyone will have some kind of association. It would be the perfect choice if you wanted that 80s video look, the 90s home video look, or you were creating something where there was altered perception involved, like someone with a migraine goes outside into the sunshine. Everything depends on the outcome you're trying to achieve. Including trying to impress people on the internet with your camera tests....

    DVD alternative?

One option would be package it within an iOS and Android apps. There are a large number of services that offer template based creation tools that would be suitable to build a similar structure to a DVD. The advantage to doing it this way would be that it is secure in terms of piracy (of the sort that the average consumer would get up to at least), has no reproduction cost in terms of time or materials aside from the initial master, is easy to manage financially as all the transactions are done through the app stores and is more convenient for the customer as it is done directly onto their device rather than through the mail etc. Consuming media on a phone/device is not the hurdle it once was in terms of acceptance but even so most people are now able to cast the output one way or another on to a TV if they still want a big screen shared experience. Another alternative would be to pick up a used older Mac to dedicate to DVD Studio Pro if you still wanted to stick with physical media. Or even use something like Parallels to let you run an instance of an older version of OSX on your current Mac.

  44. Default Sharpness on Nikon is very high and needs to be turned down out of the box for video. One thing that no one has mentioned is the Mid-range sharpening setting on the Z series. Turning it down a little bit softens skin and an create a more creamy look. I tested the camera before the upgrade and it fell short of my D750 for AF, the new firmware brings it on par with that camera. Good enough for me!
