  1. So, my brother has a channel of his kid playing the ABC's game. The little guy is obsessed with the alphabet and he's a charming good natured kid. So, bro started making videos with his son everytime the little guy wanted to play with his letters. At the end of a year they had made about 150 vids. Somehow the YT algorithm, or an influencer, smiled on their little channel and overnight their subscription rate went from 25 people to 75K; still growing. He turned on the monetize option and just received a check this month for $2K. My bro is a blue collar dude and scrapes by. This is like hitting the lottery a little bit. He puts in the work, sure, but he and his son both love it and they're getting paid for it now. He's making more videos than I do. And, if I'm being honest, they're more engaging than the dry corporate shit I usually do for pay. And, with the extra income he can actually pay a few bills on time for a change. OTOH, I'm an old creative and working under the traditional distribution model of filmmaking. My wife and I have tanked about 35K of our own cash into our latest documentary and we've made, maybe, 5K of that back. So, brave new world, y'all.

  2. After a week on the the road with the 3 cameras shooting 5 events over 3000 kilometers I got a good feel for the 2 newbies vs the 5DMk3 under a range of uncontrolled practical low lighting conditions. It didn't take very long for me to decide to ditch the X-T3. I love the design, and it can produce a good image, but under those kind of conditions HEVC 10bit is no match for 14bit lossless raw or Braw. Even custom white balancing with a grey card was hit and miss, and slight underexposure was disastrous. I did love the OIS lens, so much so I'm getting an OIS lens for the Pocket 4K. I just posted some dynamic range test pics here: With the Viltrox speed booster, the Pocket 4K has a 1-2 stop low light advantage over the 5DMk3 raw, which has been very handy. I did see some moire on some grey blinds, and there's the macroblocking in blue skies issue, but apart from that the Pocket 4K has been behaving well. I used a Sony L-series battery to Canon LP-E6 dummy battery, and a generic NP-F970 battery lasted around 1.5-2 hours. Interestingly, the batteries still had a 60% charge when the P4K was ready to conk out. I really hope Fujifilm get it right with the XH2 or X-T4 with ProRes raw or some other flavour of raw over USB-C or to internal XQD/CFexpress cards. Perhaps Fujifilm could do raw to USB-C on the X-T3 with a firmware update?

  5. The osmo pocket is sweet! With the little case it comes with, its really pretty well-protected, you can shove it in a bag, throw it in your, well, pocket haha, it's very tiny. Stabilized 4k 60p is awesome, and the cinelike d profile even intercuts decently well with larger, better cameras, with decent DR. But for a grab-and-go, decent-quality pocket camera, there's really nothing better. My only complaint is that the 4k 60 files are surprisingly hard to edit, even my maxed out 2019 iMac chokes a little bit on them, which is annoying. As an example, I went on a little jeeping adventure recently and took it along just for fun. Nothing crazy, but so easy to get fun, creative shots, boots up real quick, very easy to use, I take it everywhere with me now:

  6. First of all, this is not some big comprehensive review but just a brief look and some samples that I took on the first day that I took it out. OK, with that disclaimer out of the way, lets have a look at it. The H3-VR is an integrated ambisonic microphone array and recorder and you can find the full product information here https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h3-vr-handy-recorder Basically, what it allows you to do is record the output from its 4 microphones either as a stereo binaural track or as a 4 channel ambisonics B format which you can then manipulate in post to effectively simulate changing the mic position after the fact. If you want a bit of a primer on ambisonics then this link will sort you out https://www.waves.com/ambisonics-explained-guide-for-sound-engineers I've mentioned the H3-VR a few times in responses in various threads about field recording, particularly with regard to ambient tracks, so on my last trip I decided that it was time to put my money where my mouth was and actually buy one. Well, with the proviso that I found one cheap enough, which I did, so here we are. First impressions are that it is much smaller than I had expected which is no bad thing and very, very light so its not going to be a problem to mount it on a camera. Here it is on the very diminutive OG Pocket Cinema Camera which I was using for testing it with. Incidentally, the foam shield is included in the box but I'd budget for a deadcat if you are using it outdoors and I'd probably also caution against mounting like it is here as it is very prone to handling noise even as transference from operating the camera controls. It is very straightforward to use as it has a good menu system and you can record in an array of stereo and B format modes and it also has a headphone monitor which you can select to be stereo or binaural. This option is also available on the line out so for the examples further down they are sent to the camera as a binaural mix but still recorded in B format in the recorder for later manipulation if necessary. To make post sync easy, you have the option for it to send a tone burst to the camera at the start of each recording and the H3-VR also has an inbuilt gyro so that it knows which way is up as it where in terms of where the microphones were during the recording. This function is also used for shooting 360 videos as it allows the unit to be connected upside down under a 360 camera to keep it out of shot and also enables you to use it in end-fire mode. Specs wise, it can record in various formats up to and including 24bit/96Khz so you can have a decent amount of headroom for your recordings but there is also a limiter and lo cut filters to give you a bit more security. My interest in this system is partly for VR but primarily for general ambience recording to create a more immersive soundscape with the ability to do some manipulation of the sound targeting in post production. Its worth bearing in mind that until very, very recently, having a B format microphone array and recording setup (let alone one that can fit in a large pocket and runs off two AA batteries) was a very specialist niche with a price tag to match so you'll have to manage your expectations about matching something like that but I've got to say that for me its going to be a very useful little item to supplement rather than replace other sound recording gear I've got. For these examples, I chose two different scenarios (although they are only about 15 minutes walk away from each other in Tokyo!) to illustrate its use in capturing soundscapes with different densities and degrees of subtlety. The audio on these is from the line out of the H3VR set to binaural stereo straight into the OG Pocket Cinema Camera whilst the H3-VR was recording them internally in the 4 channel B Format (Ambix in this case). Make sure you put some decent headphones on to listen and you should be able to pick up some degree of height and rear positioning of sounds within the environment and as objects move around it. If you want to experiment with manipulating the B format files, Zoom have a standalone player that enables you to do this This is available free from https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h3-vr-handy-recorder#downloads And I have put the original B format files from the H3VR from the videos above for you to download and use with it here https://mega.nz/#!RqYQXSpB!Ydluy4G-ouMIEJbJyWWTAzcG4DIUU47G2GNKhMyVpJM OK, thats it for now, as this is very much just an initial look at it and I'll return to flesh it out with more information as I use it a bit more but hope some of you can find some use in it.

A couple shots from the Canon FD 50mm 1.2 L that I had modified to EF mount. The more I use the lens, the more I like it. I’m still flying blind with my MacBook Air. I am pretty set with lenses, so now I need to decide on a monitor/computer. Since these are all color tests just to look at the footage, I have time to make a decision before editing begins. I looked at some of my previous frames on my friend’s phone and they had a greenish tint that I’m not seeing on my computer and phone... I haven’t checked these, but I assume they aren’t exactly what I’m seeing... ugh.

  12. Last year my main channel made about 60k USD. No YouTube ads, strictly affiliate pay from having viewers click a link to my site and then from there visit a merchant like Amazon, Walmart, etc. Here’s my deepdive answer: I make product reviews in low competition niches. The videos have ridiculously high production value and tend to outrank any competitors for ~2-3 years on search and autoplay list. So on average I make about 4K a month, but that doubles or more around November and December. This year revenue is down as my older videos lose rank and I’ve been slowing down on producing more content. I could wind up making half of what I did last year if I don’t start uploading more videos. Today I build sets and furnish them using free stuff I get from kijiji or craiglist. I made modular flats with double sided walls (tile one side, wallpaper other side) and can build a room with windows and a door. I have props for a kitchen, bathroom, office and workbench. I can also kinda make a living room. I currently use an FS5.2 and A6500 with Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 glass. I use a 5-axis Kessler Crane Second Shooter for camera control. Lighting is mostly from Aputure: C120Ds, LS1Ss. I also have a number of Quasar tubes with Kino housings. I shoot 4K raw at either 30 or 120fps and upload 4K30. Edit using DaVinci. Motion graphics are done on After Effects. Sound and VOs are captured on a Blue Yeti with me covering myself with a heavy blanket while sitting on a super thick carpet. Voiceovers are heavily processed in Audition. I wrote all the code for the website myself. The only expense is paying for the domain name. Each niche subdomain is hosted on a Google App Engine project which reduces my overall traffic and allows me to squeak by on the fee tier. YouTube is used for the video hosting. The web scrapping is done on a free tier Google Compute Engine project. I use Sikuli to grab prices from websites I don’t have API access to and google search cache as a backup. Google Sheets is used as a GUI for the database, which a python script accesses to generate a flatfile DB and then is uploaded to the appropriate GAE project every 24 hours. Long story short, I don’t use Wordpress with plugins. I use Google servers with custom code to have a lighting fast website, so people are more likely to use the website and click my affiliate links. WAY TOO MUCH INFO RIGHT? But more importantly: Is this a viable route for you to make money on YouTube? Sure, I guess. At this point 7ish years in, I’m bored of making these videos. It took probably 4 years to turn a profit with my most recent gear purchases. I’ve spent a lot on equipment to keep my interest. Lately it’s way too much fucking work. It was nice proving this could work but I work a full time job that pays me way more money. There’s no way for me to replace myself and earn a revenue as whoever I teach will inevitably just strike it out on their own. I tried to help my last GF to make her own content: makeup, handbags, etc... big mistake. I don’t recommend mixing work with friends.

  16. I’ve been playing with the Osmo Action to learn how it matches up to the Pocket. So far I’m liking it. I might dare say I like it more than the Pocket. Both are very convenient and easy to carry. The Action is quite rugged, so no concerns about carrying it wherever you go. When I carry the Pocket, it’s in a case until I’m ready to shoot with it. Taking it out and turning it on is an extra step, as no case is necessary with the Action. Also, WiFi is built into the Action, whereas the Pocket required the WiFi module for WiFi. Alternatively, you can use the USB adapter to connect to your smartphone, but again, an extra step. The Pocket has shallower DOF, so focus can be off if you are not connected to your smartphone. The built in screen is OK for framing, but pretty useless for judging focus. With a deeper DOF, the Action is always in focus. It’s a point and forget type of camera as far as focus goes. The Pocket is stabilized in all its shooting modes, whereas the Action loses EIS when HDR is enabled. That said, the Pocket has no HDR support. The battery is removable on the Action, where on the Pocket you are restricted to the non removable built in battery. Neither is brilliant in low light. They are both good. I plan on keeping both.

  17. I don't think DOF matters that much. Set design and lighting are usually what makes a production look cheap, as well as acting and sound.

  18. Heyy guys!!! so, I had an epiphany~! (maybe) it seems to me that if you wanna make money on youtube, you need to, above all else, upload constantly. like, at least weekly, right? some ppl have a new video every frickin day, or more than one~! ive never had the vaguest ambition to do anything like that, im not about filming stuff all the time, u kno? i like to do the opposite, film stuff never ? anyway, i have a new lil st bernard pup, and people LOVE st bernards~! and on top of that my other dog is a beast of a hybrid st bernard/great dane/mastiff, so... instead of JUST taking stills of the lil guy as hes growing up, why not shoot some videos? i live in a beautiful forest, i think theyd be great~! they may be glorified home videos, but who cares~! i mean, I'M on youtube searching for st bernards myself lol. and ill update it all the time with lil fun clips, and weekly weigh ins ? so, i need youtube tips!!! help me yall!!! i need to make some money for my next film and i suck at illustrating childrens books i hate it smh. how do i get hundreds of thousands or millions of views so i can serve up youtubes precious ads to the masses addendum: heres a video woth 7.9 million views but as you can see, that channel only has 14k subscribers... from what ive read you need 10k subscribers just to monetize videos at all, is that correct? ugh that sucks!

What if we have a fun "EOSHD Challenge" where we all trawl the bargain bins in our local towns and online, pick something for super cheap, could be $50, $100, no more than $150 or $200... Make a video with it. Then the winner is judged in a poll - on artistic merit, and technical image quality (can be 1080p of course) The winner, wins the camera of the last place guy ? Plus a special bonus camera from EOSHD. What do you think? Worth setting up a challenge like this?

@Geoff_L that sucks about the Z6. I’ve been there. Last year I had to sell every lens I was using to shoot my film for financial reasons. I had to reevaluate my entire shooting process and what mattered for my film. The good news about the 5D3 is that they hold their resale value, so you could always buy one, test it out and resell it if you don’t like it. If you do, you’ll have a hybrid photo/cinema camera that is almost as easy as a point and shoot to operate.

  25. I think for what we are into the PK4 is hands down the winner. Lot more real options for serious work. For just a hobby, I think the XT-3 is pretty unbeatable. I am finding on the EOS M ML is a big pain in the ass for dependability. Each build you try is just a total re learn, and a shot in the dark. Frustrating, and well, not a lot of fun as an overall experience. For the money well sure, but why spend your life F ing with something when you could just go out and shoot something in a normal manner and be done with it. Are you Really ahead? In this day and age you can make almost anything look like anything if you have skill.

  29. I know a lot of people do it, but I would Never depend on ML for anything I can't repeat easily. Ergo, A Wedding, Baptism, Sporting event, on and on. I am a big fan of the 5d mk III but not if I was trying to make a living using ML on it. It is too unpredictable. Sure at low resolutions it works, but why even bother as a Pro doing that.

  31. XT3 + bmpcc4k would be a great combo too... less cumbersome than BM + 5D for my needs. But probably out of budget. With that being said, I really like the tokina 11-16 f2.8 and the sigma 18-35 f1.8, and both can be shared between the XT3 and bmpcc4k. Plus, the budget could be less stretched than buying the same focals for a full frame...

  33. Thinking about it now I'll probably sell the XT30, I like the XT3 body more and of course internal 10 bit is nice to have. I am not sure if I'll go this route or not. It would definitely throw a wrench in my system. Would satisfy my never ending new camera acquisition syndrome tho lol The plus side is I already have a bunch of manual glass I can adapt so that would be an easy switch.

  34. Not off the top of my head, but I think some have spoken about it indirectly before, and an occasional one or two might mention $ figures. My understanding is that for the pros the revenue from ads is so little in comparison to sponsored content that it might as well not even be there. IIRC Levi Allen doesn't even have ads turned on because he feels they will hurt his channel more than they'd help his income. I agree with some of @Video Hummus comments - kids create lots of watch time and their habits would surprise you, watching things you wouldn't expect. There are quite a few YT people making videos about how to make a living from YT, and also articles and other info online about analysis of watching habits etc. I think the info is out there if you're willing to do a little digging.

    Magic Lantern Raw Video

Oh, 30min of footage is not that bad since I only shoot really short sequences. I still had in mind the 12min, so this is quite good. I think the limit is in the offloading of CF card while on the field, but I could find a solution. Yes, I understand for the XT3, GH5 and P4K ; the image coming out from 5D ML seems to be a good cure for GAS ?. I don't even own one, but all the videos I see from it really magnetize my attention... I have to reason myself and think about all the "plus" and ease of use offered by all the available hybrids, to help me balance the decision ! But, still, that mojo... ahah ! Concerning the Z6, I had to sell it due to financial reasons (dead car... Had to prioritize my tight budget), despite being really pleased with it. I was eager to see the ProRes Raw update being available, but, now I think about it, I'm not sure it would has been a good match with my type of use. My camera lives mostly in a bag, and I pull it out during our activities to record short moments. We often encounter harsh conditions, hence the "live in the bag" thing, so I fear it would be a pain to add an external recorder on top of that. The last thing I want is to worry too much about the gear, and I try to avoid having the camera obstructing the rest. That's where the 5D becomes interesting, despite the negative points : internal raw, mojo, really tough to endure crappy weather... Best thing would be to have a 5D and a small hybrid to complement it. Well, I guess I have to write everything on paper and try to make the most reasonable choice

One thing that made me crazy is this stupid app from panasonic to transfer foto.when a wifi router is near, they connect to it and lose connection to the camera.last weeding i want transfer some screengrabs from video to but it on insta, but it was impossibile because this problem ? The AF works ok, if only 1 person is in scene, but with multiple is very jumpy.i have tested standard settings and extended.Second seems to react faster but with more pumping. So i use 90% MF with peaking. I think one of the best, on par with Atomos recorders. The size and weight for me are optimal, you can handheld it with a focus loop and you have a tripod style experience

Yeah, honestly, I don’t think ML Raw would be a great choice for your needs. 14bit Lossless has doubled my storage requirements and has helped tremendously but it’s still storage hungry. For instance, I get about 25-30 minutes of footage on a 64GB card with 14bit Lossless whereas I used to get 12 minutes. A 64GB card costs about $50-$60. With MLVFS, post processing is actually pretty fast now. So I guess, you could make it work depending on how judicious a shooter you are. Yes, I briefly was interested in the X-T3 and the P4K and the GH5... I like cameras and sometimes it’s strange only having one camera at my disposal but every time I come back from a shooting day and get those files into my computer, I quickly forget about other cameras. With that being said, I will most likely buy another Micro camera this summer. I really liked it when I had it the first time and being an FCPX user, shooting native ProRes will be a great alternative to ML Raw for some upcoming projects. As far as the M50, I liked the footage I’ve seen from it. I like how you can use c-mounts for a pseudo 16mm look when shooting 4K, or if 1080p is good enough, you get a S35 image with DPAF. You have a Z6, now? Why do you want to move to a different camera? With the ProRes Raw update coming shortly, I’d be pretty tempted to hold onto it and see how it pans out. Of course, I don’t know how long it will be before it’s available?

  43. A couple of days ago, I was leaving a meeting at a local university, to which I am making a corporate documentary and I found a civic demonstration. Everything was quiet, I took out my Gopro, to make a small audiovisual record, out of nowhere a police bus appeared, releasing water and dissuasive gases, the powerful jet hit me directly to the body, the camera fell to the wet floor. Fortunately nothing happened to him. For this and several reasons I have learned that by size, price and portability, the best camera to always have in the backpack, is an action camera. Who would have imagined a few years ago, that you were going to carry a 4k camera, with stabilizer, waterproof and shock, in such a small size and for less than 300 dollars in your pocket. I must say that the DJI Osmo Pocket, seduces me by the amount of functions that it has, but I think that it would not resist a deal, as I described previously. If you're interested, I can upload some videos later.

  44. Canon G7 X & G5 X-series are supposed to get a successor next month-ish if you believe rumors... The Canon G7X-series has been the all-in-one pocket content capturing device of choice of the YouTube crowd. Front-facing flippy touchscreen, decent stabilization, decent autofocus, decent picture straight-out-of-camera, decent onboard audio (when adhesive windmuffs added) and really really compact and pretty affordable. Panasonic/Sony look alright on paper... but in practice don't quite manage to deliver a similar allround package (I wish the LX100 II would've nailed it, but it's was more than underwhelming, it was a joke; the Sony RX100 VI isn't great either (the RX100 VA is close, but has its own troubles)). Not to say Canon is perfect, I can't help but keep hating on 'em for regurgitating old hardware, having underwhelming specs and even crippling cameras (like no DPAF in 4K, crazy crops, no 24p, etc). But... they're nailing the point-n-shoot and ease of use aspects of these cameras, that's why so many YouTubers still rely on the in meanwhile >3 yr old G7 X Mark II. They care about content creation. Quickly grab your camera from your pocket. Hit record. Come home, don't waste too much time tweaking the image, be uploading as soon as you can. Surely if you want to create cinematic pieces I would recommend a completely different camera, as I always say: 'get the right tool for the right job'. That could just as well just be a smartphone (Huawei P30 Pro, Sony Xperia 1, etc). That can also be a Panasonic Lumix GX9. It's always about 'making the best compromise'... and you gotta find out whatever that is to you. -- speaking of which: https://www.canonrumors.com/here-is-the-canon-powershot-g7-x-mark-iii/

No negativity from me about deep DoF, just that if you show footage that has a fixed wide angle and deep DoF look then it has a certain aesthetic. I don't know why pointing out that something has a 'look' is automatically interpreted as being a bad thing. I wouldn't mind if all my cameras had the 'Alexa look'! 46. Focusing breaks down into two parts. First, deciding what to focus on, and second, actually focusing on that object. The first task should be done by a person in most cases. There is no reason to do the second manually. The problem with the MF vs. AF decision is that we don't split those parts into distinct tools. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is currently nothing out there that uses the camera's AF system, but allows for complete manual control of which part of the image the camera is using DPAF to focus on. You can use a touchscreen tap to focus in some cases, but that's unusable in most situations that you really need a focus puller for--for example steadicam shots. It's pretty easy to imagine a better system, where a focus puller makes all the artistic decisions, but the actual precision work of moving the lens elements is automatic.

  48. So you enter two, one to win and one to lose and you have to send a camera to yourself!

  49. Yes, taking into account sensor size. If you don't take into account sensor size then it's a crazy fast ultra-ultra-ultra wide.
