  1. I've just discovered how to make your normal camera look absolutely brilliant... Dump your footage from this challenge into a directory that also contains clips from your normal camera - then open a file from your normal camera by mistake. The 6K 10-bit H265 file from my GH5 looked absolutely spectacular!!

    S1 Anyone?

Nobody seems to be debating this, but I suspect the h.265 algorithms have some issues with detail and efficiently and processor handling. It was introduced even before the Samsung NX1 and the adoption hasn't really been as widespread as it should have. Edit: I read this immediately after posting this. Apparently the adoption not being widespread is due to Patent issues and the greed for making more money and the various levels of users. They should just make it free, instead of trying to kill other codecs and extort money from adopters. https://www.een.com/h-265/

Ah! Good old 90s! I believe this is a Michel Gondry video, one of the best in business. I remember later at the '00s an essential DVD collection we all had were the Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry Director's Series. https://www.amazon.com/Directors-Label-Boxed-Set-Cunningham/dp/B00065AXTM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=director's+series&qid=1562142250&s=gateway&sr=8-1

  6. Indeed, I would to. Did however find a GH4 in mint condition for €200 (after I sold the 14-140mm lens for €300). But not planning to get it lost in the contest

  7. MSRP or street price? The currency value in 2019 or twenty years ago? I should have written in some European currency even before the euro starting in 2002. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cifrão It was possible to buy the equivalent to 100,000 then back to early noughties. Usually quoted in pound sterling in that period for the whole of European markets. Pre-brexit *cough cough* times. A F900 Cinealta (before the F900R) costed 103,000, the exact quotation I had to buy my camera unit when I finished my film graduation. That is, when I was in the film school, either some used system from late 90s (I still remember the release of DaVinci 2K systems in the early of my editing academic days, we editors were used to AVID in that period) or/and addressed to some education/training program promoted by the brand. That's an accurate figure by then. The point of yours is taken : ) but my memory still serves for the subject matter -- trust the leftover of my DNA in common with Jumbo! : D

There is one thing that matters most in music videos... ideas. Screw everything else if the video isn't original. To that end, here's a great one: People say that there's no market for short films.... wrong. They just have music over the top.

  9. If you are serious about video you should learn Davinci Resolve. Otherwise free Windows Movie Maker for basic stuff if you want no real learning curve. Used myself PowerDirector in the past (small learning curve), but cannot recommand it now as it is moving towards subscription like Adobe...

  13. Today marks the start of a cinematography competition on EOSHD. This is a fun shooting challenge combined with a treasure hunt for underrated camera gems. The aim is simple enough... To find the most cinematic camera under $200 and to make it look as good as possible. Can you do it?! Please read the competition instructions, rules and blog post here GET SHOOTING!! The Timeline 3rd July 2019: competition opens. 3rd-24th July: three weeks to find the cheap camera and shoot your video, and entrants submit their videos on the EOSHD Forum thread to the competition. 24th July: Public voting begins in the poll to choose the favourite video (and the unlucky last place!) 28th July: Voting closes and the result is officially announced, then we all reveal which cheap cameras we used. 30th July: My EOSHD judge/jury prize awarded to favourite video of all entries. ****** PLEASE DO NOT REVEAL YOUR CAMERA YET!! JUST POST YOUR ENTRY (YOUTUBE OR VIMEO) ******

  14. I win! https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id=sdigpandcgx800bob&categoryName=cameras-compact-system&superCatName=electronics&title=panasonic-lumix-dc-gx800-(body-only)-b 4K for £135 But this got me thinking as well... What if we have a fun "EOSHD Challenge" where we all trawl the bargain bins in our local towns and online, pick something for super cheap, could be $50, $100, no more than $150 or $200... Make a video with it. Then the winner is judged in a poll - on artistic merit, and technical image quality (can be 1080p of course) The winner, wins the camera of the last place guy ? Plus a special bonus camera from EOSHD. What do you think? Worth setting up a challenge like this?

  16. I agree with that, except that for me and many working professionals a mouse and keyboard is essential to the way we work. im also aware that this is perhaps old fashioned already, and in 10 year sales time younger editors might be doing their work with swipes and finger gestures because they will have grown up with iPads since birth. I’m excited to see where it goes, as everything changes and no workflow lasts for very long these days. as someone in my late 30s I’m young enough to move with the changes for now, but I’m also certain that this new technology is going to radically alter video production very soon, probably with the vloggers and youtubers first, with that filtering it’s way up over a short amount of years.

  20. All true, but that doesn’t change the fact that the iPad isn’t a straight laptop replacement for most video or photo professionals yet in my opinion. It needs a proper file system first and foremost, and the secondary concerns are proper external monitor support, and better mouse and keyboard input. once you’ve added a keyboard, mouse, and got all the necessary dongles, cables and drives hanging off it, you really might as well get a laptop! of course if you’re a casual user who just wants to consume media, or even do some less demanding productivity tasks, then the iPad is beautiful machine.

  22. “Of the Z lenses I have the 35mm F1.8, 50mm F1.8 and 24-70mm F4 – all of which cost me far too much money, only for them to be discounted almost to half price just a few months later.” Where can I find the 35/1.8S for half price? I will buy it immediately. Thank You Also Andrew, you keep saying how much you dislike the Z glass without making an argument for why they don’t work for you. It makes it difficult to take you seriously. I’m curious to hear why. Had I held off I could have bought the superior Z7 for almost the same money as my Z6 but I fail to see how this is Nikon’s fault? Early adopters often pay that price whichever the type of product. I fail to see how aggressive discounts (from all the manufacturers btw) in the face of a quickly shrinking market would not make sense? I disagree with you regarding the Z lenses. Great value for money. Better built than G or D lenses. Better put together than any Fuji X mount I had. The XF lenses may be metal on the outside but with far lesser tolerances, wobbling barrel on the 16-55/2.8 and slightly loose bayonet fitting on all lenses except the 50mm f2. I don’t think high quality plastics is a bad thing. It’s more practical in cold weather and often deals with impact better. Not to mention lower weight. The control ring has perfect resistance on all the Z lenses I have and the optics are better than anything I’ve ever seen. The choice to first release superlative quality F1.8 primes is more practical to most than what Canon has done. Super speed exotic heavy specialist glass with far fewer use cases, even if they do make for more exciting news it’s true. Theres nothing as good at the price or compactness as the 24-70/4S out there, the 14-30/4S is unique and optically on even footing with the twice heavy 14-24G. The new 2.8 zoom is supposed to be incredible. The primes so far are both spectacular. They’re quiet, fast and has what looks to be the best weather sealing out there (just look at the design of the seal at the base of the lens, I’ve never seen that construction before and it’s a much better design than just the rubber gasket you find on everything else). No focus breathing or other weird focusing behaviour. Almost no aberrations and no coma Extremely sharp with good rendering and neutral colour. Lens control ring awesome for exposure compensation or step-less aperture control. For sure it’s not like an old charming Sonnar, but I don’t need my standard glass to be full of “character”, I want it to be as neutral, sharp and true to the world as possible. The only problem I see is the lack of a setting for linear focus behaviour of the focus ring. And that the lens line is still small. But what we have so far is arguably the correct order of release for most. As of today the single best reason to buy a Z camera I believe is the lenses.

    Davinci Resolve 16

Thankfully this version is less of a video ram hog than the previous beta's. Before if I had a 4K clip with noise reduction + optical flow (speed warp) would result in the video memory warning or crash with my 8gb VRAM card. Now it works. Definitely a performance improvement.

    Video Editing Software

Try again... "In the past DaVinci Resolve systems were pre built and priced from $200,000 for a 1 GPU based system, to over $800,000 for a 16 GPU top of the line system. Even though this was in line with industry standard practice, it meant professional color correction was way too expensive for most people to afford." Source: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20100413006446/en/Blackmagic-Design-Revolutionizes-Color-Correction! To the OP, Resolve is the best choice. Not only is the free version excellent, but over the last few years Resolve has gone from not even being in the picture to being a serious contender for FCPX and PP, with people starting to switch in real quantities. If you search google for Resolve you get ads for Adobe PP - this isn't a coincidence! I use Resolve for my complete end-to-end workflow and it's fully functional, and is the best colour engine you're going to come across (the competitor to Resolve is Baselight, but there's a reason you haven't heard of it...)

I know people make money with Filmora and a 70/80D. Usually I support the open source community but I have no experience with any of those. As I said I have seen edited weddings in Filmora, they were very basic with ready made titles.

  41. Follow this advice first @kaylee! It is spot on. The initial aim isn't money, and I would argue the aim is never ever about just money. The aim is good content. Money just "happens" if you get that bit right. I think Dave's advice about the affiliates is good as well, but none of that will apply initially as you build your audience and following. My advice is this: Sheer passion. You have to create the videos based on your passion, your enthusiasm and interest and sheer enjoying in making them. Once it becomes a chore or like work, the content gets lifeless and repetitive. This goes for everything. It goes for filmmakers, as much as it does for dog videos and cute stuff, everything has to have some inspiration or passion behind it to succeed, and you need to be almost obsessive about the subject over long periods of time. You have to love it. If you love dogs, like I do, go for it. You don't even need to think about it initially, just have fun and do what you do. If it's fun for you it's fun for me to watch and I will subscribe and join in the fun. My girlfriend watches guinea pig videos on YouTube, and has a riot. When she's stressed or upset she watches rabbit being washed in bubble bath There is massive demand for this sort of content on YouTube but quite a lot of it about. If you are unique, and I think you are, you'll succeed if you stick with it and build that following. Don't even look at the balance sheet though, for at least 2 months, and obviously don't spend more than you have to creating the videos at first, until you have a following and merchandise (or affiliate income) that can support it. Build a niche and a brand and they will come! Sell t-shirts, sell merchandise to your fans. It sounds like you have an absolute gem of a setting, the forest, the awesome dogs... So go for it and don't look back. When I started EOSHD I was just a forum poster at DVXUser giving out all this info for free on someone else's site and the site admins were horrible to me one day, so I thought - right - enough of this, I'm going to set up my own camera blog, my own forum, and that was EOSHD. I hope my passion showed through! GOOD LUCK!

  42. Hey Kaylee! I will speak for myself but also speak for my friends who are all in this YouTube creator space making a full time living. I have a channel called Kinotika and I am a full time YouTuber. I went full time about a year and a half ago and we have over 60,000 subscribers...on track to hit 100,000 next year hopefully. First off...the money I make off ad revenue from Google is nothing. I’ll just say it to you....We make on average $1,000 a month off ad rev. That is by no means enough to live off of. On the months where we have had viral videos where we get close to a million views that month, we make $3,000 roughly that month. Even on our BEST months....$3,000 just isn’t enough money per month to live off of for me and my wife and kids. Thats where affiliate marketing comes in. I make sometimes double money or sometimes more off affiliate compared to ad rev...and it is continuing to grow. (I still haven’t even enabled international amazon...so I am only dealing with the USA) On top of affiliate, once we hit about 50,000 subscribers...agents started reaching out to me to represent us. I now have two agents working for me that get brand deals. Have you ever seen a video where they say “ This video brought to you by _____”? That is a brand deal. I get paid often $1,000 or more just to do one ad read. I make four videos a month and if I can get a brand to sponsor every video on my channel...we have some serious cash. Moral of the story is: CREATE AN AUDIENCE OF PEOPLE WHO CARE FIRST. Don’t worry about the money from Ad Rev or even affiliates. The biggest YouTube channels out there make the majority of their money from brand deals. The biggest creators I know for a fact will charge $20,000 and up just for an ad read. You aren’t going to make any money for at least a year or more. It took me about a year of uploading two videos a week every week talking about camera gear before I started making anything substantial. Making an “ENTERTAINMENT” channel is even harder than what I have done because it is difficult to monetize that. You have to gather a large following and then you will get calls from brands who want to pay you to sponsor your content. With what I do...people are already searching for the things I am talking about because I talk about new camera gear every day so it has a high searchability and discoverability rate. Watch channels like Derral Eves, Think Media, Video Creators, etc. They have tons and tons of videos teaching you how to get started. Moral of the story is...make videos that make you happy first. Just have fun. Make stuff you are good at. Don’t try to conform to what you THINK other people want to see. It has taken me a long time to accept the fact that I am naturally good at talking about camera gear and apple tech....that’s about it. Anyways....hope this helps.

  43. Ha, yes. I looked into trying to replicate the overall feel of the Kodak CCD in the Digital Bolex or the big-ass Sony CCD in the F35 I looked for weeks and couldn't do it. The old compacts are really terrible for video The CCDs in them did line-skipped 720p at best with the worse codecs known to man. Barley good enough for Facebook! None of them have the CCD look from the cinema cameras like the D16, they all have the Crap Crap Digital look. If you can fine one consumer CCD camera from the past that actually looks cinematic, I'll eat my forum, and you'll win this challenge.
