RED Mini-Mag Exposed
newfoundmass and 4 others reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Now I never really expected RED to have made the physical media inside their mags so it doesn't come as a massive surprise to find that they contain fairly run of the mill standard drives. Did I think they were taking the piss with the price they were charging for them? Well I still wince thinking about how much I paid for the 64 gig Redmags that I bought with the EPIC so the answer is definitely yes but when you looked at how much Panasonic were asking for P2 cards then it was par for the course. This video - which has been produced by a company that make alternative mags - shouldn't come as too much of a surprise then when they strip an official one and show the components. What I hadn't really appreciated though in terms of significance are the statements that RED have made regarding them developing the drives, the millions spent on custom firmware that writes the data in a unique way and how its a US made product. All of which this video pretty much debunks and in addition shows there being a somewhat innacurate description of the capacity. Charging people ten times what they could buy the product for is one thing but the misleading descriptions is another and one that might well cause them a few issues. I'll be very interested to see what the producers of this video have in store for part 2. Particularly as it appears RED have been trying to sue them.5 points -
I bloody love this camera - we are using it all the time to shoot elements for video, projection, visuals, shows, etc. It is great. For my use. I love to have latitude and no macro blocking for when grading. I am not sitting around waiting for the next big thing (anymore). 10bit prores/raw is awesome too. With no external recorder!5 points

Looking into this a bit further, it seems RED's suit against Jinnitech for IP infringement was dismissed a few days ago, presumably freeing them up to release this video. Meanwhile, Jinnitech's suit against RED is still very much alive.... https://casetext.com/case/jinni-tech-ltd-v-redcom-inc4 points -
He doesn't deserve it? RED have accused him of all sorts in a court case that had been running for nearly 3 years that has now been dismissed. A company owned by a multi-billionaire trying to bully a tiny operation out of business based on absolutely bogus claims and he's had to keep his mouth shut about it? I think he deserves to be able to make it into a 5 part mini-series after all that. Not to mention be bought a drink by everyone who will benefit from what he has laid out there.3 points

This is a classic strategy. Build a brand name on quality, craftsmanship then pivot hard to pure profit cash cow. Claim your product has some special sauce and charge 10x the price of competitors while delivering the exact same product.3 points -
Seems like the a6500 successor is finally to be announced next week. Will be hard to beat in terms of AF.2 points

Brian, is that your real name you wrote, right? If it is true you are not connected with the brand, you say, nothing more can be inferred from there in any way other than truly suspicious and unveiled content from your keyboard. How you know "Grant, JB, and Hook probably don't monitor this site anymore" as for instance? What for also those other words in your posting before so revealing? How can you surely be so certain of all that? Speaking about personal aspects of people doesn't show any distance from that environment, on the contrary. On your challenge, I've already responded to you directly, clear and very detailed, nuff said. That "bet you can't" is simply ridiculous... Don't cover yourself on your national pedigree or where have you been when I've praised that people in these same pages even recently?! C'mon, give anyone and everyone a break ; ) The same for BMD products... Never read such? Or then, it was no necessary to be here when only flowers have been written? To say I've criticized Resolve to follow everything I've recorded in these boards about Resolve is beyond the acceptable. Save your nonsense to wherever you want and where your agenda is coming from. Because under my eyes and any attentive reader that doesn't lie. Simply don't come here to spread BS trying to silent good people and distort facts in a cheeky manner. Must I need to embarrass you with quotes of mine? Is it strictly necessary? I don't think so. Do better your home work. And better to be quiet. Your posts only demand for a reply. This can end to distort for some casual reader we early P4K buyers are unhappy with the camera. That's not factual and pure disservice. Pay attention to what you're doing. As matter of fact, we early P4K adopters are very happy with the purchase. With or another quirk is not enough to put a shame on the whole thing. Need to have perspective. B&W is to reduce the reality and only coming from a disastrous marketing and communication as several people here have quoted. For some reason some people pop up on here very nervous! LOL ; ) We even have the chance of cDNG. Pity the newcomers are unable to have it in any way other than looking for the previous units. Sad to see.2 points

RED Mini-Mag Exposed

Yup, I don't mind quite as much the crazy rip off prices (because well, so is everything else in the filmmaking world at that level....), neither was it a surprise they're using off the shelf parts, but it is RED's aggressively defensive attitude and outright blatant lies that really bugs me. RED has taken a big hit to its reputation in my eyes. I noticed this, and guessed that timing is related to the video release but I'm still somewhat somewhat surprised Jinnitech released this video. As if other people know how easy this is to do themselves, surely that will harm sales of their (also overpriced! But nowhere near as much so as RED's) JINNIMAGs? Reckon someone needs to scan a MiniMag then upload the STL file so everyone can print their own! It sucks big big time for RED ONE users (and anybody who is interested in buying a R1), like myself, that RED didn't open up their RED ONEs to use all other CF cards. (they could have done this for instance after they discontinued it, one last firmware update to unlock all CF cards) As most cheap RED ONEs are using the CF cards rather than the SSD drives, and it is a royal royal pain in the ass to use CF cards!! 8gig cards disappear in a blink of an eye, and even 16gig cards need to be constantly swapped in and out. What other options do you have beyond that? NOTHING! Imagine how much better a RED ONE could be if we could cheaply use a standard 128gig CF card in it.2 points -

Replace my Nx1 with... what? (And what's the current AF champ?)
heart0less reacted to M Carter for a topic
So later this year, it's time to replace my NX1 with… what?? I do lots of industrial/business/medical stuff, talking heads in the office, then manufacturing or process in the big facility - a music vid every month or two. One-man-band. It's a great gig, I'm happy as a clam. The big NX1 game changer for me has been video AF on a gimbal. Never thought video AF would mean jack to me, but the NX1 with the cheap little OIS kit lens is the biggest game changer I've encountered in a decade of doing this. I can literally run around a factory and get killer shots. Clients think it's drone video. My killer-shot-count has gone through the roof - hardly ever bring the Kessler crane any more. I can try a dozen angles and moves in the time it takes to set up one crane shot. I can play that rig like a guitar. On a tripod I use Nikkors, the footage is beautiful. But the NX1 has its cons: no Prores, no RAW, blown highs, noise at higher ISOs. 4K@ 60p would be nice. I have tons of lights for interviews/planned shots, but too much of my work is in dimmer environments. The Nikon Z6 sounds like a no-brainer - but it sounds like I'd take a big step down in the AF I rely on for motion shots. So what would you do? What's the best in mirrorless AF these days? (I love the NX1 EVF for shoulder rigs and no fiddling with an external - I'll never go back to a DSLR). I'm really happy with APS-C, full frame would be fine for me though, not thrilled with smaller sensors, but for my AF shots I'm usually pretty wide, so I could go smaller sensor with a native lens. What's out now, what's coming down the pipeline? Thanks for any ideas.1 point -

Yeah the Osmo Pocket is a great little camera. DJI make a Pro version with a S35 sensor, HDR mode and good codec and I will preorder immediately. The Osmo Action has an edge in convenience, as it’s rugged design means it can be carried without too much special accommodations. Also HDR mode is awesome. The Pocket, once fitted with the thumb controller and WiFi module no longer fits in the supplied case. Both of these must have accessories should have been built in to the Pocket.1 point

Kind of tough buying a EOS M and thinking, hey I need say 3 more batteries and finding out it cost more than the damn camera did lol. There is just too many knockoffs of knockoffs batteries wise anymore. The swelling battery thing is a REAL problem, even on factory batteries for Smartphones. Lithium Ion battery's are a potential hand grenade.1 point -

Hi Emanuel, Making no pretense in being familiar with Deleuze my take on (what I'll refer to as) the "grand philosophers" is that, in my experience, there has been an absence of conciliation with (what I'll describe as) the philosophies of the individual person. "Grand philosophy", in my opinion, is itself an art form that can be best appreciated and explored when there exists an abundance of leisure time and where there is interest for the individual. Lengthy tomes and their critiques require the time to consume. Wherein, most persons are engaged in the daily basics of survival (maintaining food and shelter) it has been my observation that in what small snippets exist of leisure time throughout their days each individual creates and adopts their own personal philosophies based on their life's experiences (whether they are cognizant of this fact, or not). Tying this into filmmaking I am hard-pressed to think of many films that have dealt with the subject matter of the, um, grander philosophies of human existence. Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Stranglove comes immediately to mind as a "dark comedy" narrative dealing with the then-new existential threat of global self-annihilation on a sunny afternoon... Dr Strangelove - Official Trailer [1964] HD Remaster - YouTube: Whereas, again in my own observations, most folks are interested and concerned with (and put aside the time for) the enjoyment of films which deal with the more-immediately-relatable-situations-to-their-own-lives philosophical and emotional interactions between individuals. "Shooting a fish in a barrel" for an example here, Shawn Levy's This is Where I Leave You provides a comedic take on the philosophical and emotional intricacies surrounding the lives of various family members while sitting Shiva for their late father/husband using an ensemble cast... This is Where I Leave You - Trailer - Official Warner Bros. UK - YouTube: To use your above quote... << It seems to me that what follows is the increasing complexification of the world, as more people are born (than those who die), and as more ontological levels of multiplicity emerge, which necessarily interact with others. Think of everything that one encounters in “virtual reality” or “cyberspace”, and the impact that these phenomena have on concrete social reality. Since the advent of the internet, the complexification of the world through increased multiplicity has accelerated." >> ...I take the contrarian view (>cough<, critique) that we humans (globally) are, due to these very technological "complexifications", engaged in a grand distillation of philosophies (both grand and personal) with this global dialogue. It's not just a philosophical conversation about one's own daily struggles to maintain food and shelter just to survive,, it's also the philosophical discussion about how everyone can survive, and, ultimately, the philosophical discourse about how all creatures sharing the ecosphere this planet provides can survive. I find these to be both perilous and very exciting times, indeed. My own imaging interests are mainly to document the lifeforms and environment I encounter, I am not a storyteller as my intention, so my lurkings here on this forum are mostly as a gearhead. My attendance in your thread (this) is merely as a lover of the conversations that surround this medium...and, well, as a life-long observer of personal philosophies. Thanks for putting Deleuze under my nose, I'll return the favor with my favorite philosopher... << I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. Excerpt from Henry David Thoreau's Walden. >> Best, :) Jimmy G1 point

3C Cinema Camera Controller App for Pocket 4K - OFFICIAL LAUNCH
Andrew Reid reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
These are the key mappings for the two joysticks (the 8Bitdo is the small one) As the 8Bitdo is mapped to be used in a vertical orientation, it will be as follows There is currently no option for re-mapping keys inside the application but it is something that could be incorporated into a future version. You might also want to keep an eye on our PBC controller as for gimbal use as although it is primarily designed as a Rec/Stop controller (plus one additional one shot function) and monitor, it will have an expansion option for additional hardware switches that you can map to aperture/iso etc. https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/06/22/cda-tek-pbc-pocket-bluetooth-controller-for-bmpcc-4k-ursa-mini-pro/1 point -
RED Mini-Mag Exposed
webrunner5 reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
I think there are probably three reasons for it. Their reputation has been trashed by RED so they need to establish definitively that they have done nothing wrong in terms of theft of IP and are prepared to show their working out They have other products to sell like an adapter for RedMag cameras such as EPIC etc to use MiniMags so this has established the legitimacy of those (not to mention raised far more awareness of the company) and I would presume that the MiniMags that will go in these will be theirs as well rather than REDs. Its a huge two fingers to RED that means even if someone else does come along and undercuts further at least it means no more profits will be coming REDs way for them. Who knows, considering the scope of their case against RED which must have severely impacted Jinnitech's business for the three years its been going on, they might also be on the receiving end of a settlement that means they won't mind losing a few sales to other companies. As far as I remember, the 8 gig Lexar 300x CF card is compatible so can be picked up off eBay in multiples to kind of mitigate it. One way round it is to get one with the SSD Side Module as you can then use either the original 1.8 RedMag or use the Jinnitech adapter to let you use their lower cost MiniMag modules. By the way, someone had some joy with a 16gig version of a Lexar car and, well, here is his story on Reduser about what happened when he tried to share the love !1 point -

TN and VA are automatically excluded from our search. IPS glow and backlight bleed has to be judged per monitor, and not per model. Even similar serial numbers can be totally different in performance. Are you sure you want 4K resolution on a 27" screen? Have you ever worked with such a configuration? For me the 27" monitors max at 1440. LG and Philips are doing great the last few years.1 point -

Some footage from Z6. Portrait Profile Sharpening -3 Mid-range sharpening -1 Contrast -2.5 On the format topic, all I really wish for is 10-bit 4:2:2. Internal raw is overkill for my needs. If I'm shooting raw I'm going to be on a set and need monitor anyway, far cheaper to record to SSD in that situation than XQD1 point

A couple shots from the Canon FD 50mm 1.2 L that I had modified to EF mount. The more I use the lens, the more I like it. I’m still flying blind with my MacBook Air. I am pretty set with lenses, so now I need to decide on a monitor/computer. Since these are all color tests just to look at the footage, I have time to make a decision before editing begins. I looked at some of my previous frames on my friend’s phone and they had a greenish tint that I’m not seeing on my computer and phone... I haven’t checked these, but I assume they aren’t exactly what I’m seeing... ugh.1 point

Working towards it, day by day. The exciting news this week is that I wrote the engine to be multi threaded on Thursday. Now a refinement pass takes a quarter of the time, which is a substantial savings when doing many successively. It will scale linearly to the Amd 12 core coming out next month. When the website changes in a very noticeable way, in about a month or so, it will mean the S is imminent.1 point
