GH5 focus with Speedbooster, big difference photo vs. video mode

Well you just discovered that autofocus in pics is better than in video. The remedy is to get a camera in which they're both on a similar level.4 points -

I certainly think there should be some sort of "Dedication To The Spirit Of The Competition" award for someone who takes a hacksaw and pliers to the camera to try and improve it!4 points -
A couple days ago I wrote in the Lens section that I was bummed out that Sigma joined the L-Mount alliance because I felt it signaled that they would not produce a camera with video functions. I had thought for a long time that they could be the first to offer raw video in a MILC. And then the next day they announce a FF mirrorless camers that shoots raw video.... possibly internally. I think we’re witnessing a very specific strategy by Leica, Panasonic and Sigma to corner a very large slice of the MILC video market with an upgrade path for both lenses and cameras while simultaneously offering an alternative to Blackmagic. Think about it, Panasonic has too large of a user base to offer Raw Video at a BM price point but have definitely been affected by the competition. I can only imagine the loss of sales Panasonic has had with the GH5/s once the BMPCC 4K was announced. Through the L-Mount alliance, Sigma can offer a competing product as Panasonic sells the extra features of the S1H For all we know, Sigma could offer V-Log with the FP. Either way, the FP and the S1H are the most exciting cameras on the horizon and if the price is right, and the internal specs, I may just move from EF to L by the end of the year. Btw, do we know when the S1H’s full specs will be announced and when the camera will be released?4 points

Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill
thebrightvi and 2 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I think this is genuinely a HUGE step. Rarely, do we get such a big leap out of nowhere like this. I've never felt like any other camera was anything other than just good, or expected in 2019. This is different. It's like having a full frame Pocket 4K with nobs on... from the future. This image sits in the cinema world, not the video one. I've shot some S1 10bit V-LOG with it this weekend. Here's a frame: Compared to the X-T3 10bit F-LOG, dynamic range seems wider and shadows cleaner. Image is creamier, and less noisy at high ISOs. Base ISO is 640 in V-LOG, but extended ISO can go a bit lower. Compared to A7 III S-LOG 2/3, the codec is far more robust, less banding and compression, it looks like ProRes. I'll upload the original MOV files soon.3 points -
Better quality version of the presentation here and the auto translate subtitles are reasonably decent. There are a few audible "wow"s when the CinemaDNG recording is announced Some more detail in there about the new lenses as well. Camera stuff starts at 29:003 points

It just makes finding individual clips a lot slower... I don't always want to have to import everything into a Premiere project just to see what I've shot. I mean c'mon Apple what the fuck are you doing all day. 10bit H.264 should be working 100%... In every part of the OS. Funnily enough, no such problem with the NX1 H.265 with current version of Mac OS. Oh and while on the subject... Does Adobe Premiere edit ADOBE Cinema DNG yet? Or was that a bit beyond those geniuses as well?2 points -

I don't like being unfriendly, but the anamorphic store is the pinnacle of everything that is wrong in the scope and diy world. I'd stay away from this dude for as long as possible. As for larger scopes, I've seen lots of good stuff coming from them, the issue is what kind of rig do you work with to support it.2 points -

Yeah, on forums we can go down rabbit holes of if X vs Y feature is "better", and thus if camera A "beats" camera B etc But the practical pragmatic realities is cameras like the Sony FS7 is a workhorse that will pay your bills day in day out. Sensible purchase! A Sony FS7 would 110% be on my short list to buy if I was still focused on the camera dept instead of sound. Also..... TIMECODE! Whoa! That is only US$4.5K, is rare I'll see them on eBay for that cheap. And to get it with some bonus accessories and almost mint with under 500hrs, what a bargain! I recommend looking into LC709a2 points

I dont think stills shooters will be interested in this camera. It has no mechanical shutter, a fairly slow sensor readout (as evident from a 1/30th flash sync speed) and therefore will be pretty much useless for photos of anything moving and longer focal lengths.1 point -

Same. I think the smart play would be between $1300-$1600. The BMPCC 4K put a wrench in a lot of cameras. So unless the FP shoots internal Raw at around the price point of the P4K, I don’t really need it. As a hobbyist, I only NEED 1080p Raw. I already have FF Raw with my 5D3. And I have S16 Raw/ProRes with my newly acquired BMMCC, so to upgrade to 4K Raw, the FP would have to be competitive with the P4K. The next year should be pretty interesting. If I’m being honest with myself, I probably won’t upgrade my cameras for another year or two, so hopefully by then all of my boxes will be ticked for $2500 or less.1 point -
The firmware release notes are here but make no reference to it https://pro.sony/en_KH/product-resources/software/1237493297313 At the risk of sounding blindingly obvious, is it possible that the menus only appear if you actually have a compatible recorder attached to it ? Here is the full instructions for the Odyssey but the Sony end should be the same irrespective of what the recorder is so you can ignore the Odyssey part of the document. https://vmi.tv/upload/pdf/FS700-Setup-Guide_v2_11_110-19Aug2014_1409134165.9053.pdf1 point

Stupid Question on Shutter Speed

what frame rate were you shooting? It sounds like you were shooting at 48fps and it that were the case the duplicated frames would be because the shutter is opening at a slower pace than your sensor is capturing frames; thus duplication.1 point -

If you get a focal reducer then don't forget to also get a cheap dumb adapter as well, as they're worth having additionally!1 point -
I do this *all* the time. It is such a hassle to set up everything that I leave my P4Ks rigged up (mostly) and transport them that way. I take off the external monitor (if I am using one) when I travel, but leave the cage, rails, battery, follow focus, etc. I have the HDMI / USB-C clamps in place, so I also usually leave the SSD attached. If you want to go with a smaller / lighter setup, skip the v-mount battery with rails and use one of the Sony NP battery sleds. I attached them to the cage top handle. A 970 gives me 2+ hours of run time (iirc). The NP battery sleds that I use have an LED that turns red when the battery gets low, so you have some indication before the external battery dies. Since I use the 12 connector, I also have the internal battery as a safety backup.1 point

Sincerely not. Very interesting angle viewing design. I also wonder if that's happening with all them...?! Some report it, some others don't. I didn't test it so far. I suppose there are some answers to honestly address yet. Does it affect both 4K and 1080p as for instance? The fact that crosses all formats available from cDNG to ProRes makes me think is nothing related to some particular codec. What about the encode processing, can we say anything on the killer fog or there won't be any issues related whatsoever? I am not engineer, so what do I know!? Perhaps some other users with wider knowledge can add some light on topic? : -)1 point
-
This blue sky subtopic is a mystery still to be cleared up as it seems. The fact people has found it along cDNG proves is not exactly related to braw. I wonder if that's not something coming from some user settings anyway? Something that under other circumstances may bring some distinct outcome and overcome the issue? It would be rather interesting to discover it : -)1 point
-
And it has happened like that : ) Who accepts bitching over here...?! The point is when people take positive criticism as anything negative and start to biasedly counterattack... Pure nonsense. What for BTW?! Truth should universally be at the ship's command column, this doesn't rule out a diversity of angles over the same subject in respect of fairness though. B&W portraits can variably shine but only in 100% under required circumstances ; ) The idea 'who's not with me is against me' is proper of a totalitarian mindset, not suitable to any healthy discussion and progress. Nothing valid comes from facts distortion. From egos either. Let alone ad hominem attacks! Perspective is always useful and welcome, I always want and tend to believe : -) That said, to ignore or undervalue this capture device (my fav cam ever as so many times written) is absolutely unfair. As much as the most fanatic opposite side.1 point

I get that ML Raw would be too good, how about the Ptool hacks for the panasonic cameras? As they technically fails the "unmodified stock video mode" rule. If the ptool stuff is allowed, surely using ML just for the bitrate mod as long as you're not shooting raw should be allowed aswell? I didn't mean to complicate things ?1 point

Would be kind against the spirit of this contest (same reason ML raw is not allowed). Then one could also use an external ninja recorder with other camera's. I think the contest is to just use internal h264/etc of the camera.1 point -
Yes, this camera is a low light beast indeed : ) To admit it where shines, to not be silent when it is time to open the mouth. This is nothing but truth : -) At times, there are several of them to compete amongst each other. Sometimes, it is a way more simple than that... : -D1 point
