Preproduction breakdown of a low budget commercial I shot.

Hey! I'm back again with another BTS look at lighting. This time I breakdown the process of planning a shoot with high-end results without using any lights. As always, I hope we can get as good a discussion going , so if you have any questions at all - just ask away and let's start a conversation! Link to blog post.5 points -
If you are interested in that type of 1" sensor camera as a B camera to your G7 then you might be better considering the Panasonic FZ1000 as they both have Cinelike D so will be easier to match. Same battery as well. They are also generally a bit cheaper than the RX10 too.3 points

I'm not so naturally bold, but have pushed myself and gotten some interesting images. I even did some using a GoPro in one of the burst burst modes (10 photos over 2 seconds IIRC) and getting super close, which is easier because the camera is so small. A few GoPro street photography pics.... and this one was taken at about two to three feet from this guys face, but looks much further than that because of the wide angle: Any camera can work if you put interesting things in front of it and put in the time...3 points -
Black Mirror has several such episodes. Most of the younger people I meet in sets are seriously underperforming while overperforming in social media (taking selfies with the actors, loose focus all the time and checking their phones constantly). I am not even on social media, and they had super amazing photos holding long boom poles and whatnot, but they couldn't boom to save their lives.. When I started 20 years ago, we were shooting 3 camera setups with NO cut in soap operas. Now we shoot 2 cameras and we cut, and still they can not do it! I am trying the last few years to find a boom op that I can keep, I am trying to educate them with all my experience and knowledge (that didn't happen in the older generation), and still they underperform so bad, that they jeopardize my job. Now, I am trying to find someone in my generation, or a generation older than me, and I am talking with even 55-60 years old boom ops! It is what it is. When they will be 40-45 years old, none of our opinion will matter because they will live in their own world. Older generations f@$€ed up big time anyway, that is why I have a small hope that this time it can get better, except the climate, and the A.I, and the Ebola, and the overpopulation, and the nuclear disasters..kind of scary, and I have kids of my own..but I still have some hope in humanity, maybe because of those said kids.3 points

On G7 I use Natural with contrast at 0, color -2, sharpness and noise reduction at -5. So, not messing with the 709 curve, nice potential for grading. On G6 I shot everything at -2 and found my own grading workflow to get nice poppy colors. Just ISO 1600 was too much for the slim HD codec. 100mbit 4k codec on the G7 is very good though, so much better thant G6. Anyhow, some G6 example after heavier grading with -2 on everything on natural profile.3 points

The medium is the message / AMUSED TO DEATH
hansel and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Some topics I am researching for a documentary at the moment... I really like Adam Curtis on the BBC, he's made some incredible stuff. His collaboration with Massive Attack on a film with live sound track was a highlight. So was Bitter Lake. What stood out about that one, was his riff on the film Solaris... Our anamorphic LOMO favourite by Tarkovsky. In the movie, the Russians encounter a planet which causes strange hallucinations on board the spacecraft, like the captain's dead wife appearing. As part of the research mission they notice that they can change the surface of the planet by irradiating it, not realising that all along the planet was irradiating them. It is interesting, because at the same time the movie was made in the 1960's, Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase "the medium is the message". Here is where things get really spooky... McLuhan claimed that the medium itself changes and impacts society, controlling "the scale and form of human association and action". Cinema for instance, is a medium that changes the concepts of speed and time. From Wikipedia: I think what's happening, is that mediums are acting as a mirror and feedback loop. The medium of TV for instance influenced the message, the content and both together influenced society, which in turn was reflected back in the medium and the content, creating a feedback loop which has resulted in our modern times being as they are... I.e. pretty fucked up. I have realised that today's social media and the internet have created an environment in the world, by its mere presence. Just like those first few lightbulbs and the first spark of electricity. And this environment poses a severely underestimated danger. And at this point it is worth mentioning a book from the early 1990's about show-business... It's called Amused To Death, by Neil Postman. Prophetic doesn't even begin to describe it. "TV has conditioned us to tolerate visually entertaining spoonfuls of material" it claims, to the detriment rational public discourse. This guy was a lone voice at a time nobody could see the wood for the trees. He warns that there are real and present dangers from the age of show-biz and pop-culture, that all normal people ignore because it's "just entertainment". Now fast forward to 2019. What do we have... We have a culture that is utterly destroying itself. The rational opinions, intellect, long-form content, long periods of single-minded focus, are dead. They are dying in each and every one of us, not just in society at large. We're transitioning to a global digital medium that surpasses TV in influence by far. That's social media. Even the internet in terms of websites like this could be a thing of the past in just 5 years, reduced to just a Facebook group with content measured in sentences or single phrases, and discourse measured in who can shout me down the loudest. I'd love to know what Postman would think of this if he wrote Amused to Death today, as it makes TV make positively tame, as a force for change in society. Just like that supernatural, dangerous planet in Solaris, we're being irradiated. The digital world is a dangerous form of inhumane radiation, like acid rain to an old building. Our culture is changing. Our kids are carrying knives. Our politicians are tweeting. Instability is increasing. And the music... FUCK. The music is getting REALLY SHITTY.2 points -

Trust me, its the hundred and first project that you don't know about that will really blow your mind. Meanwhile, unfinished symphony number 49 has had a bit of an upgrade since it was first unveiled last week. Sensor is now integrated into a separate unit that sends the measured distance wirelessly over BLE to the main focus controller which then processes it and sends it on to the camera. And also has a measurement display which will come in useful at a later date........2 points

You'll have to trust me on this one, not your screen. The footage off the card has a low micro contrast, gentle fine detail, not hard edges or too sharp, video-look. And if you wish for a softer look there are a million $0 ways of going about it with 4K. One of them is simply to shoot 1080p and upscale to 4K. But that would be missing out on the full bandwidth this sensor and codec providing.2 points -

webrunner5 and one other reacted to Maxbrand for a topic
Of course it's all relative. I do a lot of work with GH5/EVA-1 as well, I honestly don't often feel limited by the camera package. It is all about the lighting and camera placement no matter what gear you have. That is the point of most of my blog entries. Don't let the gear available stop you from creating great work. My reel has GH5/RED EPIC/EVA-1/Alexa and more cameras intercut and I doubt that many people can tell the difference, I can barely do it myself. ?2 points -

bmp4k adventures
JordanWright and one other reacted to leslie for a topic
Ok so my tokina 28-70 turned up last week and the vitrox adapter arrived on friday. Spent some time with both on the bmp4k over the weekend. This viltrox is the most expensive adapter i have bought so far most others have been dumb cheap adapters ( read that as really cheap ) for my pentax m42 lenses. the viltrox fits onto the tokina lens very snugly no play, sadly cant say the same about the fit to the bmp4k there is some rotational play there. I understand that manufactures need to make allowances for tolerances but i think bm could have make things a bit tighter on the mount front. So far thats been my only thing that seems to bug me about the bmp4k and various lenses that i mount to it. I'm really starting to like the tokina 28-70mm zoom even with the brief amount of play time. I'm thinking this may quickly become a favorite lens. The viltox has a tripod socket foot that does that screws up onto the adapter with a thumbscrew. However i'm either a 300 pound weakling or the thumbscrew doesn't screw up as tight as i would like as i get a little bit of side to side movement when attached to a tripod. i am going to try living with it for awhile but i think i'lll end up getting a local welder to spot weld it or something. i new it was a smart mount when i bought it but was unsure if it would work on the p4k. The viltrox has something like an aperture ring that goes from f to 8 which is similar to your normal aperture ring except instead of being say f2.6 - f22 it goes f-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 i guess it correlates close enough for a human mind to interpret. With out reading the manual the adapter will change the nikon aperture from the ring on the vitrox adapter but not from the bmp4k. With the tripod socket foot attached and the tokina on the front, the camera seems balanced enough to sit flat without tipping forwards or backwards but pick it up and its a touch heavier on the lens. i have included a bunch of dng stills converted to jpegs for your perusal. Probably the next thing on the agenda is a speed booster which is what i will be looking into next, as i'm not really a fan of the 2x crop of the p4k, maybe the viltox one. Apart from the movement from the foot socket i quite like the viltrox adapter. I did find some dirt or something inside the tokina lens when i first looked through it, not attached to the camera when zooming however it doesn't seem to show attached to the camera, maybe i should do some pixel peeping. If i can find a good localish service center i would be tempted to get it cleaned. edit: by the way i got the nikon version, as far as i'm aware only the nikon and the pentax versions have an aperture ring, the others are controlled by the camera feel free to correct me i am wrong.2 points -
Adobe shambles - Why subscription software should be illegal
Orangenz reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Creative Cloud is anti-competitive, locking users into a perpetual payment plan with no guarantee of future costs. What started at Adobe has spread like a cancer in the software and creative app industry with subscriber-only plans rather than a one off purchase price. Our subscriptions as businesses, enthusiasts and consumers are stacking up and becoming a real monthly headache, and it is time governments looked into regulating the subscription software industry - starting with the king bastard of them all, Adobe. I use the Metabones 0.71x and it works perfectly. I use it mostly with the Sigma 18-35, but it works well with other lenses. My understanding was the P4K version was going to be somewhere between the 0.64x (which can vignette) and the 0.71x and perhaps have a few other features.1 point

I am not optimistic. It seems to me that the whole social media - youtube/facebook etc - thing is 'one circular mind f**k'. IT seems an extremely efficient way of wasting time.1 point -

I think 50mm is a pretty natural FOV of a human eye that is intensely focused on a subject. We tend to naturally ignore the periphery in those situations. 35mm is probably closest to a natural FOV. But it hard because images are flat 2D and we have 3D perception soo it's not exactly the same.1 point -

Adobe shambles - Why subscription software should be illegal
Orangenz reacted to profdraper for a topic
Totally agree, true arsehats. FYI, in a previous life I worked with Universities, software licencing and international conferences around same. Adobe also got themselves involved in this; short end of a couple of stories: 1) they constantly and unethically got their suite into University labs, then when later there were ongoing problems, they constantly stitched us up with 'fixes' (ie, more and more money). and 2) hopeless, they got hacked & exposed customer credit card info etc, including my own; quite a drama with my bank about that, needed new card to be created etc. Adobe never even apologised, in fact at the time, was near impossible to cancel my account and could eventually only do this via eff-ing Twitter (yet another piece of useless garbage). In all: 'vote with your pockets'. If the numbers go down dramatically for Adobe, then this effects their shareholders, then their psycopathic practices. Also: there are many other excellent alternatives in any software area: many companies deliberately offer alternatives to this awful subscription model. eg: DaVinci Resolve instead of Premier, Nuendo /Cubase instead of Avid Pro Tools ... the list goes one. Vote with your pocket.1 point -
Exactly. And their isn’t really much competition from other companies that deliver what the g7 does. Sony a6000 is overheating 1080p. Canon m50 is more expensive with nice 1080 but useless 4K and bad assist features. Em10iii maybye?? But no flat profile on it. The g7 IS still a good value, even if the g85 is technically better.1 point

You people are crazy for recommending a G7 over a G85. Hell they are only like 50 dollars more than a G7 at times. One right here for 450 bucks, if you need a PaL one there is one on eBay for 415.00 Dollars. Crazy to buy a G7 for that much less money now. I had a G7 myself, great camera, but if was buying again I sure as hell wouldn't buy one again with the G85 out there to be had. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-G85-Mirrorless-Micro-Four-Thirds-Digital-Camera-Body-New/132894837276?hash=item1ef1264a1c%3Ag%3A9hQAAOSwIddcHBFg%3Asc%3AUSPSPriority!45056!US!-1&LH_BIN=11 point -

Anamorphic Sideways
leslie reacted to heart0less for a topic
You can either multiply 1080 * 1.33 and get 1920x1436 or divide 1920 / 1.33 and get 1443x1080. It just depends on whether you want to stretch or shrink your pixels. BUT, if I were you, I would put the camera sideways and then use 2x scope normally. This would give you 2160 x 1920 or 1080 x 960 Remember that an anamorphic adapter in a sideway position will give you vertical flares like this: (still extracted from: https://vimeo.com/326643814)1 point -

Most people on here act like everyone in the world is like us. I bet "we" don't represent 0.5% of the people buying all this stuff from Canon, Sony, on and on. And I would bet in the last 5 years 50% of the Rest of the people have switched to Smartphones. And more and more will do so since these newer ones have multiple cameras in them. That was half the reason people didn't want to ditch the cheap DSLR was some kind of Tele lens. Now that stuff is here in Phones. I have no clue how any of these company's down the road are going to sell their wares as they say. That is not counting the pressure say the Osmo Pocket, Osmo Action, GoPro has put on "real" cameras as of late. They are doomed I think. Then there is the PK4 for peanuts. Talk about pressure. If you pay 5995 for a new Canon 1DX mk III you are getting Really Screwed. I doubt it cost 6 times as much money to make a 1DX. They have used the same basic body for like 10 years. 30 Years if you go back to the EOS-1N RS film era.1 point -

Sensor size obviously matters. 1.8 on full frame and 1.8 on M43 look different end of story. I am not misinformed. I'll be the first to admit what I like is probably not very conventional. I like wide shots, seeing everything, long depth of field, slow motion. I like to see whats going on. Shooting this way is expensive and difficult though and I rarely even do it myself. The choice to use shallow DOF or not, is an artistic decision. Its my artistic opinion that DOF is one of the least important things when it comes to making a film. I also think its overly used especially in many modern movies. Its great to have when you are dealing with shitty ass locations where no set design took place. I use it all the time often partially for that reason. If I had a beautiful set to show up things would be much different. There are a ton of highly paid professionals that make artistic choices that I think look shitty. Its just a difference of opinion and when it comes to art there really is no right or wrong.1 point
