Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill
Nmccarthy and 3 others reacted to Cliff Totten for a topic
HA!,...its funny that you say that as I'm holding my S1 with the MC21 adapter and the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 right now as I type this. It REALLY looks great. I can tell you also that ramping iris open and close is pretty smooth too. AF in video is very accurate with "AF-ON" one push AF. Don't worry about Super35 mode. It looks just as beautiful as FF in terms of VLog, dynamic range and signal to noise ratio. This image sensor in VLog is blowing my mind. CT4 points -

Canon rush to reassure investors as camera profits plunge 64%
Andrew Reid and one other reacted to Ed_David for a topic
I'm not expert at any of this, but would assume all semi-professional camera makers are taking a hit. What is the performance with Sony, Leica, Panasonic, etc etc in their camera divisions? As the iphone portrait mode gets better and better, this is most likely taking away people from canon rebels and the likes. Next 10 years, god knows what happens with the dslr/mirrorless world. That iphone portrait mode is probably good enough for 85% of people I would imagine, especially when the end result of photos these days aren't to be blown up. Not even onto computer, but a 2 in instagram picture on a 720p cell phone that's no larger than 6 inches long. and full disclosure, even I have been fooled by the iphone portrait mode.2 points -

I'll shoot 30 seconds of FF VLog and Super35 VLog and upload the files straight from the card to my Google Drive this weekend. There is, of course "some" difference is noise shape and pattern between FF and Super35. I did some lens cap noise tests between the two modes. The full frame mode has the advantage of 6k oversampling and the Super35 does not, it's of course a 1:1 4k readout. So, the ff scaled down noise is a finer grit. It's texture is very small. Whereas the Super35 is a larger, more common looking pattern but still truly excellent for a super35 camera. Panasonic amazingly gives us some noise reduction control! As you know, noise reduction is a DESTRUCTIVE process. Once it's applied to an image, it can never be removed in post. It's artifacts are burned in. I record entirely with noise reduction pulled back to "0". I would MUCH rather surgically and more carefully remove noise in post than have any camera do it in real time for me. (for serious projects that I care about, not simple dumb stuff) Again,...this S1 sensor is clean, clean clean. Even the tiny noise that it does produce is "pretty" looking. I can't stress enough just how much it's dynamic range is in VLog.....wow! CT2 points -

So did Panasonic, Sony, Olympus, Fuji and Canon. An Atomos rep told me years ago when demonstrating the Shogun that they could do Raw to prores and later raw to raw over HDMI. He told me all the camera manufacturers where informed and they just needed to say "go". So I naturally assumed the A7sii, which wasn't announced at the time, would be first. But no, they all decided to drag their feet for a couple of years first. Thank god for black magic.2 points -

webrunner5 and one other reacted to Cliff Totten for a topic
U Yes, this is how it works. Atomos goes through the pain of getting pattent liscensing with RED so that "they" become the sole ProRes recorder with with compressed raw. Any camera company only needs to create a standed raw (not compressed) output using Atomos HDMI bus spec. (I was told that Atomos also utilizes the Gigabit Ethernet channel specification built into HDMI pinouts to use as a data buss for raw) Anyway...Atomos did the patent work so I dont see Panny or Sigma or Nikon wanting to ever get involved in their own internal compressed raw...because Atomos took on that task for everybody. BTW....Atomos told me that ProResRAW is NOT 100% owned by Apple. It is joint-owned by Apple and Atomos! That supprised me! So,...Atomos ALSO has a say on how ProResRAW is liscensed in future hardware and software! If Nikon, Sigma and Panny wants INTERNAL ProResRAW, they will need to go to Apple and Atomos together to get approved. (DJI did it)2 points -

Thanks @webrunner5 for this article. This was fascinating reading. So, here are my big picture conclusions: This is only an issue at really wide apertures (1.4+) The sensor stack on the P4K is 1.5mm thinner than normal M4/3, so if you are using an adapter without optics, the P4K should perform better than other M4/3 cameras because its sensor stack is close to the same thickness as a normal SLR. The Sigma 18-50 f/1.8 lens is pretty much immune from the problem because it has an exit pupil distance of 150mm. MOST importantly (and unexpectedly) the P4K may show problems with *native* M4/3 lenses at very wide apertures because those lenses were designed to use a 4mm filter stack but the P4K uses one that is 2.5mm. Luckily, I have a Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 lens and P4Ks + GH5/GH5s cameras. When I get time, I will compare the P4K vs. the GH5s wide open and look for differences. If there are differences, it will probably be on the edges of the images. I would bet that the differences would be most visible in photos, but obviously the P4K doesn't do very good photos... So, Blackmagic designed in a difference (filter stack = 2.5mm instead of 4mm) that would likely make the P4K perform better with adapted lenses, but also likely caused it to perform worse with native M4/3 lenses...weird.2 points

well with iphone sales slowing, and slow adoption of the more expensive brand items and a global recession/depression on the horizon, especially with the us/china trade war, brexit, and the collapse of the environment, and Moore's law, Leica sales may also be tapering off a bit, especially if rich little johnny finds his current leica is just fine and doesn't need to upgrade, especially when the end product is instagram. I know andrew isn't a fan of canon's lack of innovation, but they did do dual pixel AF in the c300 which started the amazing autofocus for video game and their lens ISS technology is pretty unbelievable in that 70-200 II and III lens and they do value good skintones, so I hope they don't leave the camera game. So let's not dance on their grave . And full disclaimer, I now own a c300 ii and a c700, nikon d600 (selling) also a sony a7 iii and blackmagic pocket (selling) and aaton xtr plus.1 point

The S1 lenses I’ve used (24-105 and 50mm) are both great for manual focus. The S1 has the option to change focus pulling into a linear style (rather than by wire/speed) so it works great.1 point -

I was only told specifically about the S1 getting 4k raw over HDMI. I was not told anything about that S1H. You can be certain that it will have everything the S1 has plus even more. I can only assume it will go beyond 4k and do the full sensor width at about 6k. (it will at least do 4k raw in super35) I think we will find out both at IBC next month.1 point -
Camera Manufacturer Dead Pool

Did not have an E-M1, but already had a E-M5 MK II. Stationary, gimbal is not needed at all; but for panning shots and walking, gimbals are very useful. And like rangefinder style cameras when travelling / street - people don't bother with them, the SLR format of the E-M1 is much more intimidating. And heavier. Very tempted for the new Crane-M, because of the wifi integration - very pratical to start / stop recording using the gimbal handle. Only if the payload was around 1 kg... (and could connect to Olympus cameras too).1 point -

That's how it is these days. One could shot a video like this, include much more sample footage, give a succint summary and end it on 6 minutes mark. But if you want to get paid by YouTube, then you blah, blah, blah, blah, without further ado, blah, blah, blah, okay - is it 10 minutes already? - blah, blah, blah, blah, cinematic b-roll, blah, blah, blah, blah, buy my LUTs / presets, blah, blah, blah, remember to subscribe and like this video.1 point -

What he had was ten lenses he was comparing and yet 95% of of we saw on the screen was shot with the eleventh one1 point -

I saw demo footage shot with the Z6 raw out to the Atomos V in ProResRAW. That was on display at NAB. I also know that the S1 will also have raw over HDMI this year too. This was a high up Panny decision that went against some lower managers in Varicam and EVA1 that did not agree with the idea. Unfortunately, Nikon dragged their feet too long. They had a chance to beat everybody by 6 + months on raw over HDMI. They had a window to be the first any only camera doing it. Its looking like Panasonic will have theirs ready right when Nikon is ready. Sorry Nikon...missed opportunity. The big question is Sony. What will they do to answer Nikon, Panny and Sigma in the raw world? Jeremy Young jokingly said at CES; "If you want Canon to do something, get Nikon to do it first. If you want Sony to do something, get Panasonic to do it first"1 point -

You don't know much about politics then. Any radical change is suicide. They might know they are wrong, but money and power is stronger than common sense. That is why it is so screwed up now. And the trend now for young people wanting everything for free is Socialism. We see how well that has worked out around the world. A middle ground well sure. Not extremes. Every 4 to 8 years here in the USA the pengelium swings the complete opposite way. Republicans versus the Democrats. Sort of kept it in balance in the past. Now all I see is hatred toward the other side. No good end in the near future for that kind of belief. Radical beliefs lead to Very bad outcomes. In this day and age 3 to 4 top economies can change the entire world. Not like it was years ago. Everyone is vulnerable now. Times have changed, probably for the worse. Too little, too late now. The Oh My God moment was several years ago. To me the EU put a heck of a lot of countries in harms way more than they have helped them down the road.1 point -

Nice work guys; sure, Aces is a viable route (VLog -> LogC -> Aces). With the next release though, EC will really exceed the aesthetics of standard LogC routes in every way Well, I've certainly blown through my own deadlines. Best steer clear of further prediction until the exact date can be guaranteed beyond a doubt. Progress on the P4K is good (which directly benefits the S, and 5). webrunner5 reacted to inde for a topic
No idea what's the **best** but I really like the A7s image. It's my belief that many who look for the elusive *cinematic* image are really looking for dynamic range and potentially, nice rolled off highlights. Stabilisation would be an A7sii. There are many things not to like about these cameras but the image and just as importantly the sound quality is fantastic.1 point -

It's funny. Zillions of people are waiting and waiting for the A7S-III. Its like Charlie Brown in his field waiting for the Great Pumpkin! The A7S-III is HERE and it's right under everybody'nose! It has: Full frame sensor (Very likely Sony Exmor) 6k full pixel readout to 4k scaling 14+ stops of dynamic range 10bit 4:2:2 4k with clean HDMI out 4k 30p 4:2:2 full frame no time limit internal recording. 4k 60p in "Hollywood" Cine super35 frame size. Full size HDMI with 4k raw on the way. Waveform scopes Huge battery Varicam color science....so delicious!!! NO OVERHEATING! Boom!.....that's 99% of what we wanted in the A7S-III....yet nobody is paying any attention to the S1 yet. (Only some people) The S1 should be the industry talk of the town but too many people seem to be unaware of it still. Sony is going to target the S1, not the S1H. I dont know if they can match the S1 using their tiny A7 bodies but lets see how far they go. S1H?....haha...Sony wont touch it! With 6k raw, Its going to be WAY over spec'd for Sony to even attempt to try. They dont have the bawls and XDCAM + Sony internal politics will never allow Alpha the chance.1 point -

The million dollar question - how’s the rolling shutter seem? No worse than an A7SII or A7RIII? I shoot a lot of documentary on a pretty purpose built A7SII(more recently I throw my A7RIII in for the better slog2 / sgamut3 color science and the APSC punch) rig running off V-mount batteries and recording ProRes to a Shogun. Directors I work with love my old Leica M and MS Optics lenses and the only camera I can provide the full image circle of this glass is a full frame offering like what I’m using. They’d rather take the 8bit 4:2:0 with the fun lenses over cropping them on an S35 cam with better color depth, or springing the cash for a Sony Venice. Seems to make major sense to move to the S1 or maybe S1H if it has IBIS. Especially considering I own 2 GH5 and a GH5S as my other package. Also side note re: Netflix and the requirements: a lot of the time they aren’t checking the exact specs of what’s being shot unless it’s an in-house show. We did the Demi Lovato doc with probably 25% Alexa and 75% externally recorded A7SII on my lenses. YouTube funded the project and the specs clearly excluded a camera like the A7S, but it’s what worked for the project and nobody ultimately objected or really even knew the specifics of what I had in my rig beyond the editor. Mileage may vary for sure but there seems to be a bit of leeway with the requirements if you’re not working directly on an something like an in-house Netflix gig.1 point -

ACR gives nicer colours and cleaner image than Resolve. To avoid flicker don't use shadows, highlights, whites, blacks or contrast - use exposure slider or curves instead. Or better still, forget about grading in ACR, buy Cinelog and grade later. For fast jobs I use Resolve. For maximum IQ I bite the bullet and transcode overnight to 444 Cinelog masters using ACR for AE. Search for a Smart Import 2 script.1 point
