If you add up the “sweat equity” of professional time put into the production, it’s kind of crazy how expensive the film should be —but we all know the words to that particular song. I’m doing an accounting of the true film expenses next month. All of it. Travel, food, lodging, rentals, etc. Reckoning time. Yikes.

It was merely a comment on the way to common notion that a colored shadow isn't "real" or is in fact "wrong". When in fact, a grey or black shadow is more incorrect than a colored one. Orange/teal isn't an unnatural grade made up by computers, its how the world actually looks in certain hours of the day.

Seems like the S1 is a pretty darn good choice still, and I am sure the S1H will really take the cake. That said the Z6 will likely be my first full frame camera. The prices on it are just insanely low used. Like any other camera if you get decent exposure and nail white balance your stuff will look good.

Yeah bro I wasn't commenting on your work. Most couples like the type of stuff you do. That's the type of weddings I usually shoot as well. Being someone who shoots that stuff all the time though it doesn't really excite me. The reason I'd want it is just to be able to look back on the day years later and see it. But yeah short wedding videos are much more fun to make and edit. Doing those full length 2 hour cuts is a nightmare.

Strange opinions here, the couple received a 1 min cut for FB, 3 min trailer( in this case he is a big Mustang Fan and a crazy person, so the cut is how he like that) a 15 min cut and 45-60 min reportage of the hole day ( mixed original sound and music ) We have a very funny time, nothing staged, simple let do the couple what he like...

From what I saw your posts are a lot about film festivals and popcorn. Something your target audience care very little about. They care about one thing only, dogs being rescued. I would start targeting dog owners, dog related groups and communities. On Instagram you can use up to 30 hashtags per post, use at least 10, if not 30. #dogsofinstagram #dogrescue etc. When you search hashtags on Instagram you see how popular they are, try different combinations and pick the once with +50k or something. There are a million forums, FB groups and so on about dog, cat and other rescuing. Join them all. As a dog owner I've seen a lot of dog and animal rescue channels on YouTube. I would approach the bigger once and try to cut a deal for a sponsored video. Maybe even a discount code with some kickback for the channel. As anyone with a some what successful YouTube will tell you, the big numbers comes from other platforms such as blogs, etc. And still best of all, "unsocial media". Get on the news or in a paper and things start to happen quickly. I used to work in marketing for the worlds second largest chain of animal hospitals and veterinary clinics and believe me, your TA is fanatic. Every time we got a rescue dog or cat that survived some type of ordeal it was a piece of cake planting the story in papers etc. Until your movie hits big that hashtag is just a waste of the # key But seriously, use that hashtag on all posts and then 29 to reach your TA.

You need to identify what niche markets would this film appeal to. Then hit them! You also need to be clearer in what you're promoting, I read you entire post and I didn't even know what the name of your film is :-/ That is shocking, you should take every opportunity to mention it! (heck, I didn't even know the TOPIC of your doco from this thread!) You need to shout its name loudly from the rooftops! "FLYING FUR"! Also, how come when I go to youtube I can't see the trailer anywhere? It is all well and good having your trailer on Vimeo, but you need it on YouTube as well! You'll pick up far more organic views there on YT than you ever would on Vimeo. Plus what is your elevator pitch? You need to make that point more clear cut in your marketing. You're never using any relevant hashtags, how is anyone going to find you? One of your many niche groups you could target is indie filmmakers, you could write up about your journey, put out a BTS mini doco video, etc For instance if you got yourself featured on for example NoFilmSchool, then that would be a win! (because for as much as I dislike what NFS is in 2019, it still does get a lot of traffic)

You're sounding optimistic! I wouldn't be surprised if Sony's next couple of cameras don't even have that.

Okay, after years of corporate funnin’ and making a living that-a-way, had some savings set aside that really allowed me to devote a chunk of a year to making a movie and then self releasing it. From start to finish, it’s all a DIY effort from just two people, myself and my wife. So we know production enough to get by, but after we jumped through those hoops and made the product, I stepped into an arena that crushed my old ignorant ass: marketing and social media. I mean, I feel like what my wife and I do as filmmakers is decent, we’re not as accomplished and polished as some in the craft, but we enjoy what we do and are proud of it. ... But basically, we got a modest little film and can’t seem to find a strategy that allows me to sell it in any financially rewarding way. I’m a cook that’s trying to plate a decent meal, but can’t figure out how to leave the kitchen. Marketing and promotions, I feel so lost and stupid. We’d love to pay a publicist 20k and make their magic happen, but all the coins went into the production budget. Now what? So, I’d like to ax you’s guys to take a peek at my online naïveté. When it comes to promotions, where am I screwing up? Is it obvious to you? ‘Kuz it ain’t to me, and I’d love some advice. Links below. They show the current efforts. For shooting in studio with real time tracking and rendered background, they used 8K screen for the backdrop.

I got this cheap and cheerful one off Amazon for £26 and it works perfectly fine for me. @Walter H thank you ! I am working mostly manual focus, and use the Af only when i need tracking or to find the focus point in critical situation and then switch back to manual( there the S1 is very good with the Eye AF ). continuos tracking works only good when 1 person is in scene and the background is blurry ( thing that on weeding is not often )., maybe works better with lenses that have 1.5 aperture . I have only the 24-105 and manual Samyangs. I wait for the Sigma L- Mount lineup. My setup is simple, monopod with manfrotto head on a Hijib belt with 20000mah powerbank under, Rode Micro and variable nd filter. With a display loop i work sometimes handheld, dual ibis is very stable and give a good floating look i have shoot foto for first communion with 60 kids, 2 hours , 1100 foto, 5 out of focus( with the Eye AF ) I think is not a bad result with the kids the always moving and the church was very dark

Really just using Wolfcrow's Cine 1 setting and just grading that. Files are flexible enough that as long as I protect highlights I can bring up the shadows while editing. FLAT is already a pretty great setting. Andrew's Log profile gives you DR but sacrifices to much color for my taste.

@Kisaha The difference in sensor stack size between the P4K and other M4/3 cameras should be most visible with native lenses at very wide apertures. I did some quick testing a few days back with my Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 lens. I didn't notice a drop in image quality between my GH5s and my P4K, even using that lens wide open. At some point I am going to try and set up a test scene and look at this issue in more detail. There may be differences with that lens between the two platforms, but my initial look didn't reveal anything that stood out. Yes. I am sure that is the cause. I also think that Kisaha is correct. That particular lens in that video didn't show a big difference because the exit pupil is about 80. A shorter exit pupil will likely show different results. You just *know* that in the future you are going to hear horror stories about someone putting the new Metabones adapter on a normal M4/3 camera and messing up or scratching the sensor stack.

The one Sigma 35mm I found, is the F1.4 DG HSM and infinity is 78.8 and close distance the exit pupil is 81.9. The Milvus 35mm is 66 for comparison, so the difference can be more substantial here. It is a lens to lens difference, if you have an AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR @ all, where the exit pupil is 146.3 then you do not care much, if at all, but if you have wider primes, or Zeis, or legacy film lenses that can go as low as 50, then maybe you care. There was a talk of weird examples on the internet about P4K and Metabones, we saw a video above that the film maker stated that Metabones don't match well the P4K, depending the eye of the creator and viewers, but also the lens used, there were complaints, or not. We spend thousands of ?for the best lens/camera combo, and then you put a 20€ vND in front of your lens? Some do. Everyone has various limits, some want the best of the best for their P4K, some are fine with lesser - and much cheaper, solutions. Now, if you are buying a Metabones and you own just the P4K, then you shop the special adapter, the issue is for people owning multiple m43 cameras. I will be waiting for a few more tests and I would like to see the difference in performance with native lenses also.

Im sorry if our discussion made it sound as if we where putting down the work you do. That was never my (and I suspect anyone else) intention. It was merely a side discussion about how I have huge respect for you guys shooting weddings but that Im at the same time very glad I don't have/need to make them. Because they are simply not my cup of tea to watch and/or make.

Considering it's not your video I will not analyse too deeply or be too critical, but this is what I see: There is quite a bit of variation between shots, some are really good and some aren't as good Overall the colours are pretty good It wasn't shot with an ND (the fan shows no motion blur) so that gives it a slightly video look, but this is a minor point I think what lets down some of the shots in this film are lighting and composition - this is where the top end of cinematography really shines and in this video some shots are very nice and others have odd framing, distracting backgrounds, unflattering lighting angles, etc. Having said all that (much of which is nit-picking) it needs to be acknowledged that this video was obviously shot on the street, the models were shared amongst many photographers, there appeared to be no artificial lighting and I didn't see any lighting modifiers in there, and it's likely that the time available wasn't huge. In those circumstances it's a completely different challenge, and comparing a high-end cinematographers showreel to something shot run-n-gun in probably only an hour or two doesn't make sense. If you're interested in good examples of cinematography then I'd encourage you to stop looking at YouTubers and start looking at the pros. Make a list of the most gorgeous movies, TV shows, and advertisements you've ever seen, research who shot them, who graded them, and then go find their showreels and use those as a reference point for great images. Here's a good one: Then read as much BTS stuff as you can find. Using IMDB and shotonwhat.com will unearth huge amounts of information about how these images were created. Also, there is no substitute for hard work. Find a shot you like, take a whole day and try and replicate it. Work out what lighting was used, what lens, what angles, then pull it into post and try and replicate the grade. Find the sites that sell very expensive LUTs (not youtubers - people that actually work in the industry on movies/tv/advertising) and find their before/after images. These are useful because they often have a colour chart in them, so if you have a colour chart of your own then you can try and replicate that look and be able to apply some science to it. It's great to connect with other people, and this site has many skilled people that will answer questions etc, but there's no substitute for hard work. If reading about things or talking to people on the internet made us great at film-making we'd all be multi-award-winning geniuses! [Edit: also, videos comparing high-end lenses, like the ones that BTM_Pix posted just recently are great too, because they will be well lit and perfectly exposed/WB etc, and probably aren't graded either, so can serve as a great reference point]

The market for weeding videos hasn't really matured yet. Hedge trimming might work, but weeding get's a bit repetitive watching after even just a few minutes ?.

It's so crap, I ordered a second Fuji XT3 body yesterday for video so I can carry on making more crap wedding videos. Actually, I'd be quite interested to see what DJI come up with as I love the look of the Hassleblad...just that its; too expensive and doesn't suit my needs anyway. Further to this topic... Yesterday, I was again wrestling with another wedding video, - trying to match up; Sony 1" camcorder static footage with Fuji XT3 footage with DJI Mavic/Pocket/Action footage...and there is little consistency and though in isolation the camcorder footage looks decent, compared with the XT3, it's garbage. So I had a little word with myself and made the following decision and that is bar anything actually breaking, forcing me to replace it, instead of looking at what I might be doing next year and speculating on what new kit might be coming, I'd embrace what I have and make that work. I shoot stills and video at the same time so ideally, having just one system would be best but as no single manufacturer makes 'everything', I have to use multiple brands. I've pared it back to Fuji & DJI. Fuji as the principal and DJI for the aerial and backup. The camcorder is going to be sold and I've ordered a second XT3 body to replace it. For the rest of the year, I'm just going to shoot the Eterna profile only, so no Flog or HLG on the basis I can judge the exposure of the film profile far better in the real world conditions of often uber-bright sunny SW France and concentrate on my capture rather than having the kit and technology get in the way. I'm planning on getting to know the set up as intimately as possible as I believe that is where the results will come from rather than the next latest and greatest. So the BMPCC4K, the Sigma FP and the potentially new DJI et al all look great, but none of them are going to make me any better at my craft. Maybe HLG next year, but for now I think the negatives outweigh the positives and consistency is the key. Sorry for the ramble!

I'm submitting this 50 mins after the deadline, I don't know if I'm in or if I'm out... Damn, I know that this thread has been open since around a month, but didn't had time, didn't thought on participate, and last week I thought about it and said "let's give it a try".. unfortunately didn't had any time, and just today I was able to sit in front of the computer to edit.. so sorry for the quality, I tried to do the best I could on the image part but didn't even had time to normalize and do something with the audio ?‍♂️ I hope it's good enough. The camera used can be bought used from $124 very used, and all the way up to $200 in mint condition. I aded a BONUS SHOTS part where I put some unrelated and random shots with different lighting conditions to see how the camera performs on those situations. Here is the link, it's still uploading:

Wow, 3ccd 10bit raw, 720p, global shutter, with a leica- pana zoom lens, lens stabilization and legendary ergonomics. Keep on posting, my friend!!!! Maybe you can resurrect the hardware hack and @BTM_Pix can join the process. We better get our DVX100 cams cheap now.:)

@Sage like I said earlier these look nice and no one can take that from you but this looks more like a hue, saturation, luminance adjustment to match the cameras. There is a lot more to a color space than an HSL and gamma/contrast adjustment. LOG C has a wider color gamut than VLOG L which would probably cause a lot of issues using certain LUTs designed for LOG C. This is more like a look LUT than a technical one but I guess I can’t make that assessment until I put them in my NLE again these look nice but I don’t think its a true colorspace conversion.

Its not the color science thats different its the cameras sensor or color filter array that can “see” more colors than a lower quality sensor. A sensor from one camera could see more red than the other BUT since they are all using the same color space & gamma the results are always predictable and manageable. i.e. rec709 is 6 stops of DR whether its coming from a sony or a canon @JeremyDulac

The strongest theory was that it was bought by a company that was about to start developing a cinema camera and needed to acquire the tech to stand up the patent they were filling for recording video in a RAW format. The sort of company that would have re-branded it in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS and put vaguely military industrial styling on it....... Allegedly.
