  1. A bit of an unnecessary poke at Mattias for sure, who is after all completely RIGHT about Canon's colour science, completely right that it's all about the image. Take colour, feel and the image composition away and add specs... and what do you have. Yes that's right... Shit all.

  4. Shoot in 30p, but then conform it into 24p. The subtle slow-mo of the image will make it look more cinematic. Canon is just trying to help you become better filmmakers.

  5. Its not funny. A Canon rep told there is a legitimate reason for no 24p. He said something about the way the sensor is read out. He said that Canon wants it to operate at a perfect temperature. It runs too cold at 24p, but is at an optimum temp at 30p. It was done for the benefit of the camera.

  6. I don't disagree with the overall issue with the internal batteries being poor but just as an FYI really, the BMPCC can use the usual cheap SmallRig NPF sled which mounts on the top hole if you did need to have a longer run time so I've took a quick snap of my cameras to show you the form factors. The overall package is much smaller depth wise with the BMPCC but at the expense of doubling the height of the whole package but this can be offset by using those smaller capacity NPF batteries which reduces the form factor. The additional big gain for keeping it small also comes in it having the integrated LCD and, much as I love the expansion capabilities of the Micro, having to wire the connector just to get a LANC start stop is a bit of a pain when the Pocket can have one plugged directly in. For travelling, this LANC grip, an EVF loupe and the two cheap tiny Panasonic collapsible zooms (the 12-32mm and 35-100mm) which both have OIS make it a pretty good modern day impression of an old school cine camera. The Micro wins for image due to it higher fps and lower rolling shutter and the expansion possibilities make it brilliantly customisable but the Pocket, for me, is more practical to do casual stuff with. One word of caution regarding what is a very cheap price for the one you are looking at, make sure you check the HDMI port works.

  7. Hey folks, I made a quick test comparing the BMPCC 4K with the S1 V-Log. Here are my thoughts with the sample clips It was a quicky, so do not take that a professional reference, but you can play with the footages in resolve to see how they hold up against each other.

  9. Thanks so much! Indeed it seems the P6K has a unique personality of its own. I don't know when it'll be ready, but I can say it will be something special. An idea of what I've been kicking around: I rewrote the engine to work at whatever resolution on the fly. I did this to handle unique 97x/129x resolution passes that handle 'super' values beyond floating point 0.0 - 1.0. I've entirely remade the EC component in this larger space, and will be able to offer DCI-P3 variations (massively benefits 709 conversions as well)

  10. That's exactly why I jumped off from the Canon ship few years ago. I'm sick of all those little things to protect their upper models. I mean you can do it in a sense, but when every other brand do offers 24p, you really have to have no shame...

  12. FILMMAKING 101 by Kayleee ---------------- So all you have is just a dslr or camcorder. How do you get something good on it? Find a subject you find interesting, rely on bright natural light, rely on close-ups for good built-in sound, and brighten up the scene (add more light), make sure the light is even, try to make a video as simple as possible, and lastly rely on the rule of thirds. Do not let criticism and judgement of video quality get to you as well. Oh forgot, try to make sure you have good white balance. And lastly make sure the video is focused well. Another note is recognize that the camera is not the same as your eye. The camera could zoom in more than your eye and you have to adjust settings to get proper exposure. Practice, practice, and practice. I also forgot to mention that you should not throw away your pictures or videos in camera, because they may look good afterwards. Be aware of the distance the camera has with the subject as well. Also try to get even lighting, not too much highlight and not too much low light combined. Be aware of the focus distance your lens can do.

  14. Indeed. Someone as skillful as Mattias could use any camera, but the Canon EOS R helps him achieve his vision easiest. The $200 challenge should have shown people that it's not just about specs. We're incredibly lucky to have so many tools at our disposal, whether your budget is $200 or $2,000,000 there's no short supply of cameras that can help you create your vision. The issue with Canon, and I think some people maybe forget this, is not that their cameras are inadequate but that they take features away that hinder creativity while every other manufacturer has done the opposite, at least to some extent or another. Do you need 24p? No. Do you need DPAF in 4K? No. Can you use excessive crops? Yes. You can still create works of art with these cameras, even if it hinders your creative vision. But why should you have to, when you can use a GH5, X-T3, a6400, or hell even an old T3i? You shouldn't have to deal with those limitations because Canon decided they wanted to segment the market more and take away features in their lower end models that they've included for years.

  15. I'm writing a little late this cause everyone already revealed what camera they used. It was a very good surprise to know with which cameras the different videos were recorded!! The results were quite amazing! I had a little doubt about whether if my choice was within the rules or not. I shot it on a LG V30, yes, I shot it on a smartphone, which tecnicaly it's not a camera, but it can shoot video, I didn't used or paid any third party app, I used the stock camera. And the phone (which obviously comes with the lens) costs way less than $200. It shoots 4K with an amazing stock camera app, with all manual controls and shoots in LG LOG. It has quite an amazing dynamic range (s-log2 dynamic range level, not kidding). It has some quirks, which I'm gonna talk about in a video. It has some weird color shifts in LG LOG that need to be corrected, it has a really low 48mbps bitrate in 4K, not good for lowlight. But still, it is a camera under $200. The youtube compression didn't helped with the image quality so I've uploaded a 4K version of it. If someone is in the look for an affordable smartphone that shoots AMAZING video, I see this as the BEST ONE.

  16. That's an unnecessary shot. @Mattias Burlingalways emphasizes that it's the right camera for him and his work flow, which is more than fair. Just because it's not an ideal camera for you doesn't mean it can't be for him. We all have our preferences and what's important to us. For him SOC color is more important than other specs. And that's OK. I don't see why it bothers people.

  17. Also for anyone reading this that has slightly deeper pockets and is ok with a larger camera and still wants the same "magic" in the footage - I forgot to mention that the URSA Mini 4.6k (not the pro!) also uses a Fairchild sensor and the footage is simply gorgeous. Just throwing out options for folks who prefer the Fairchild look. I have not used that specific camera, just have seen the footage - so I am not aware of its quirks.

  18. @deezid nice. I’ve never shot on a Varicam but I feel like the S1 v-log gets in the realm of that creaminess which i love so much in Varicam samples I’ve seen.

  20. I have two options for Mac users. I will try to find good options for windows as well. Colorcast: Free color grading and post processing software for Mac. Includes various scopes (waveform, parade) and three way color corrector and sliders similar to davinci resolve raw color settings. It did stop development in 2018, and I have had glitches with it, but it might be decent. Final Cut Pro X trial: Download the free 30 day trial from apples website. Add /thankyou to the end of the url if you don’t want to enter any details to download. Use this to view scopes on your footage. If you need it longer, set your date and time back after the trial ends.

  21. The V-Log S1 sample is free of any sharpening and nr artifacts, wondering what this guy is talking about lol. If anything the S1 looks noticeably smoother. The Braw sample is full of noise and hair looks (enhanced). The exposure could have been even hotter to reduce the noise honestly, you can still lower ISO later to add some contrast back After two minutes of matching without any secondaries I came up with this. S1 V-Log P4K BMD Film V4

  22. The left one is the S1, the right one is the Pocket (you can spot easily, because it's "cropped", aka 4K DCI). Download the sample clips and try to push your own grade to it's limits. I'm not a colorist, just quickly graded these two clips After I uploaded them, I noticed that I pushed the Pocket highlights a bit too much. The braw has the information (highlights max at 80 IRE) but the brightest parts of the screengrabs are over 100 IRE. I only had the Pocket on one shoot and got the V-log license yesterday ? So, I will upload more sample clips probably so everyone can get the idea what are these two toys capable of.

  26. Kye's guide to film-making for beginners: Step One: Go somewhere cool Step Two: Point your camera at awesome stuff Step Three: Go home and edit out the boring bits Step Four: Now edit out the bits that aren't completely awesome Step Five: there is no step five - you're done. Just enjoy what you made and show it to your friends. If you don't have something awesome happening in your film, basically at all times, then the settings won't save you! I actually give this advice to people IRL. Of course, it's basically useless. The people who need to hear this won't listen, can't edit, don't have time, or refuse to learn. The people who will listen have probably already worked this out

  28. I bought my FeiyuTech g6 plus on eglobal for €170 brand new including free shipping from the UK. It works perfectly with my Lumix g7 and gx80. I use an older mobile phone without a sim to connect the camera with the gimbal and I can control the camera from the gimbal. Not the zoom because I don't use power zoom lenses but record and focus works perfectly. I started using an ipad with the lumix app to control and monitor the camera instead of the gimbal which works even better. I can still use the phone to control the gimbal movements. The total remote solution...

  30. Woah there, you can't just say "grab it". If someone can interpret my comment as an incitement to literally bite the vendor then yours will be construed as an encouragement to steal it. We'll end up with enough red arrows to have a celebratory fly by for The Queen.

    Letus AnamporphX-GP 1.33x

just attach it to your gopro it should fit the waterproof housing theres four screws that secure it too the plastic housing. Or there's a clamp that will hold it onto the gopro lens if you dont want to use the housing. I have 1. thats what i used on the front of my $200 camera challenge. However i secured mine to the camera with about a meter of electrical tape. i have heard some people say it helps straighten the gopro's distortion. If it does its minimal or marginal perhaps. It will fit the 3, 3+ and 4 unsure of the 5 but it doesn't fit the 6 as i tried that and i presume it wouldn't fit the 7 either. You may be able to modify it to fit later gopros or the gopro's themselves. However you'd probably kill the resale value if you did that. but thats for you to decide. maybe we should do our own little gopro challenge lol

  32. Hey @ken! I'm pretty sure these (as most 1.33x fixed focus lenses) are two cylinders. They might be tiny and close together. I had it for a brief while and the footage was indeed squeezed and there were flares. Saying there was oval bokeh was too much, because I don't even think GoPros can have bokeh. ?

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

There's quite a difference between the P4K and P6K in color. The P6K differentiates between different hues way better, also greens don't looks as lifeless, skintones look richer, way less IR contamination, slight yellow bias (bit RED like) etc... Lots of things to take care off.

Hi there, just a post to let you know that I’m also waiting for the P6K version of emotive color. I’m absolutely sure that both your knowledge and commitment will create some magic and make this beast of a camera shine in an unique way. Any ETA for the release ? Can’t wait ! Thank you for the amazing tools you are putting into our hands

  38. I guess Im alone in shooting everything in 25p then. No production house or TV station Ive ever encountered would want me to shoot 24p. I still don't get why this happen. As soon as a company, be it Canon or anyone else releases a product not aimed at "me".. the hole forum goes apeshit. Are we really that bored or do we honestly believe that we are the only person left alive and that everything being made must be just for us and never for others.. Its just so weird to be upset imo. Just buy the camera that IS made for you instead of being upset that one never intended for you isn't. And then we instead get the ooooold cryings "they don't inovate" etc. I guess not, I mean first 4K, first 4K 60p, first decent log, first decent AF, first proper ND adapter, first decent EIS plus a whole shit load of other really nice features that works for the people that don't care about some lame 6K pseudo codec or having the camera do everything in auto. Instead they get feature that can actually hep them in their work and are happy with that. I have no intention of buying the M6ii, it simply isn't for me. But Im not crying about it, because Im sure it will suite others very well. Awesome, to bad its a Samsung (had too many bad experiences with their quality). My TV is still a Samsung (had it for 10 years or so). When it finally dies my house will be Samsung free. But Im sure 8K washing machines will be "standard" in two years, just like people say about 4K broadcast (for the last 5-6 years..)

  39. 6K RAW seems super tempting but the file sizes makes my eyes water just thinking about it!! We recently bought two TVs (one for someone else and one for us) and my wife is a super-star bargain hunter, typically finding deals like 40-70% off. Anyway, IIRC we bought a 58in and 63in and we made the decision to buy the 63in one without knowing it was 4K because it didn't mention 4K on the box or on any of the little feature stickers on the display model. When a TV with a huge discount doesn't even mention it's 4K, that's an indicator that 4K isn't new any more. I don't know how long people typically own a TV for, but if 4K isn't even mentioned anymore then pretty much everyone will be getting 4K in their next upgrade.
